Barbaresco DOCG 2021
Light ruby red with orange reflections. Fine bouquet of violets, forest floor, cherries and a balsamic camphor note. Marasca cherry, some raspberry, liquorice and a hint of mint on the palate. An animating acidity and the right amount of powdery tannins round off the lively and long final. SUPERIORE.DE
"Dense, deep red berry flavours, dark cherries, firmly framed by grippy tannins, still slightly porous in texture, rather a head of character that still needs to round off a little." Weinwisser
"This is a bright and perfumed Barbaresco that shows potpourri, rosehips, dried strawberries and orange peel on the nose. It is medium-bodied, tangy and lively, with firm tannins and crisp acidity." James Suckling
"A lively mix of candied and fresh red fruits, bay leaf, and green herbs, with a whisper of cinchona bark and blooming rose. Dried cherry leads the palate in a tangy, mouthwatering dance with a playful herbal twist. Elegant tannins frame the entire palate as notes of crushed stone and earth finish the wine." Barbaresco Serraboella DOCG 2018
Medium-bodied ruby red, fine rose bouquet with hints of tea and dried herbs. Beautiful black cherry aroma with well-integrated wood notes makes it a balanced and at no point intrusive wine. The 2016 climate also gave this Nebbiolo an impressive precision and straightness. SUPERIORE.DE
"Medium red; some fruit, tobacco; powerful, juicy, good tartness, very pleasant." Merum
"Developed-looking mid ruby with bricky rim. Brooding, complex, deep nose with a hint of Moroccan leather. Generous but not yet fully open fruit, stitched together by gorgeous chewy tannins and ripe acidity. Good medium-term potential." Jancis Robinson

Barbaresco DOCG 2020
Prunotto's Barbaresco shows a strong dose of Nebbiolo personality and opens with balanced notes of dried berries, liquorice, tar and blue flowers. The ensemble is delicate and fresh. What makes this wine so attractive is the fact that it offers such a clear and unadulterated view of the grape, which comes across particularly well in this very attractive drop. The finish is full of elegance and silk. SUPERIORE.DE
"Light red colour; reductive red fruit; round attack, barrel-like, coffee, fine tannin, caramel, long, drinky, pleasing." (JLF) Merum
"Aromas of wild raspberries with floral undertones lift from the glass of this classic Barbaresco followed by present but subtle earthy tones. The juicy palate is loaded with tart red fruits balanced by medicinal herbs and sweet spices. Supple tannins are lifted on the finish by the vibrant acidity." Wine Enthusiast
"A dense red, with macerated cherry and berry flavours overshadowed by liquorice, hay, menthol and a hint of leather. Although light, it is intense and persistent, with ripe fruit on the finish. Excellent balance and length." Wine Spectator
"Full of restraint, liquorice, dill, blood orange, intensely floral, with vibrant fruit such as strawberry and orange. It has a lot of volume. Lively freshness to the finish and firm, muscular tannins that are youthful, dusty and yet ripe. A graceful classic for the long haul. Barbaresco “Spezie” Riserva DOCG 2015
The Nebbiolo grapes for this archetypal Barbaresco come from marl soils at an altitude of about 250 metres. After two years of ageing in large wood and a further 6-7 (!) years of bottle maturity, here comes a wine on the market which, with its perfectly matured tannins and fine sweet melting, is already giving even the most impatient Nebbiolo fan a lot of pleasure.
Ruby red with garnet reflections, convincing, spicy bouquet of violets, moss, rose petals and small red fruits. Nice pressure on the palate, yet open-hearted, fresh and full-bodied, with well-dosed extract-sweet notes of maraschino cherry and a beautiful fruit that promises another great future in combination with the fine-meshed tannin. SUPERIORE.DE
"Rich bright cherry red with dark reflections. Inviting bouquet of juicy wild raspberries, blackberries, also something of cardamom and delicate bourbon vanilla. Pleasant on the nose, winds gracefully through the palate, powerful in body with a sparse structure, yet clear, goes into the lingering final with good pressure." Falstaff
"Lustrous maturing ruby with orange tinges. Sweetly scented ripe cherry nose with the merest suggestion of fruit cake and hugely appealing. A succulent mouthful of marasca-cherry fruit with coating tannins. Long, concentrated and highly enjoyable and still not at its peak." Jancis Robinson
"Rich and broad with a fleshy opulence to the wine. Blackberries touched by truffle oil, smoked meats, and dried herb perfume." Decanter
"A solid 2015 Barbaresco with spice, cedar and plum character. Full body, lots of fruit and chewy tannins. This needs time to soften and come together." James Suckling

Barbaresco Bordini DOCG 2020
Medium-deep ruby red with orange reflections. Wonderful bouquet of fine sour cherry and strawberry compote with restrained oak spice. Multi-layered and juicy on the palate with a potpourri of dark fruits, framed by fine-grained tannins. Well structured, it leads into an interesting, long finish. SUPERIORE.DE
"This red wine is fleshy and shows notes of cherries, strawberries, mint and earth, accompanied by a firm, lively structure. Although this wine sounds rather austere now, it is fresh and has a lingering fruity and spicy aftertaste." Wine Spectator
"This wine is lively and racy with ripe raspberries, blackcurrant leaves, rose petals and bergamot. Also dry earth. Medium to full body with crisp tannins and chalky texture. Structured and a little chewy, yet fresh and red-fruited with a mineral finish." James Suckling
"The Barbaresco Bordini 2020 (with fruit from the village of Neive) shows a medium-bodied density with more texture and structure in this vintage. The Bordini is a little more austere in character and savoury overall. This added richness is accompanied by an open approach that makes this wine approachable in the medium term. Or you can wait if you prefer." Wine Advocate
"Black raspberries, medicinal herbs and spiced tea dominate the aromatic profile. The firm palate reveals that the fruit is at the core, surrounded by sweet and savory spices, including notes of cigar box and worn leather. Mouthwatering acidity adds to its appeal." Wine Enthusiast

Barbaresco Serraboella DOCG 2020
Medium ruby red with orange-coloured reflections. Deep, concentrated bouquet with some lift and brooding intensity. Concentrated and long, but convincingly balanced by an integrated acidity and a rich layer of sandy tannins. Good potential, even if it can be enjoyed now. SUPERIORE.DE
"Very pale ruby in the glass, with mushroom earthiness, straw, strawberry, cinnamon and a meaty touch. This fierce character is supported by a very savoury attack, with delicate acid, polished and vibrant tannins: a large palate and a lot of details. There is great balance despite a bit of austerity on the finish. Super-classic for ageing." Decanter
"Fresh and crunchy with red fruit, dried herbs, potpourri and moist earth. Medium- to full-bodied with firm tannins, that are ripe and velvety. Dry and a little chewy at the end with attractive fruit coming through." James Suckling
"Packaged with a black label and eye-catching lettering in red, the Fontanabianca 2020 Barbaresco Serraboella reveals a very fine, almost dusty personality with wild berry, crushed rose and wet river stone. The wine is beautifully balanced, with dry tannins presented next to delicately sweet berry fruit. The Serraboella shows the careful winemaking practiced at this estate. Only 4,000 bottles were made." Wine Advocate
"Reserved yet somewhat haunting on the nose, this wine presents pristine dark-berried fruit aromas, dried rose and savory spices. Warmed and macerated black cherry shines on the palate, accompanied by mouthwatering acidity and a solid earthy bass note with firm, yet fine tannins. This wine is meant to be savored." Barbaresco “Nubiola” DOCG 2019
Sparkling ruby colour. Expressive, very fragrant bouquet of red stone fruit, wild berries, mint and leather. Juicy, clear attack with well-proportioned tannins. Wonderfully long finish with ripe berries and spices. SUPERIORE.DE
"A taut, lightly sinewy red informed by a mix of cherry, plum, eucalyptus and tobacco flavors. For now, the balance tips toward the grainy tannins, yet this offers a lasting impression of fruit and savoriness." Wine Spectator
"The Barbaresco Nubiola 2019 is quite a high-flyer in this year's Pelissero range. Aromatically intense and also quite deep, the Nubiola impresses with its balance. The blend of different vineyard sites was clearly an advantage. Bright red fruit, cedar wood, tobacco, orange peel and pomegranate give it a remarkable complexity. Give the tannins a few more years to soften." Vinous

"A luscious cherry and raspberry center gives this wine a generous, welcoming profile despite typically taut tannins. Great acidity balances the delicious red fruits that build on the palate and linger in the finish." James Suckling
"Simmering black cherry aromas dusted with a full spice cabinet lift from the glass in an almost ghostly manner. Dried rose petals along side sage, bay leaf, thyme and black tea develop as the wine opens. Just like a wave the wine stars off in the distance but swells to a crescendo of tart red fruits, savory spices, tobacco and dried earth. Barbaresco DOCG 2021
"For us, it is important that a good Barbaresco fully expresses its characteristics: elegance, finesse and harmony. The 2020 vintage has given us a complete wine that is very fascinating and has excellent ageing potential. Although it is drinkable now, we recommend storing a few bottles to observe its development. We are excited to see how it will develop over the coming years." Franco Massolino
The grapes for Massolino's Barbaresco come from the Starderi, Albesani and Serraboella vineyards. Medium garnet red in colour with rust-red highlights. A charming bouquet of bright red fruit, rose petals and violets. Rather delicate on the palate, with an elegance and finesse that is completely convincing even at a young age. As it progresses, it reveals a seductive fruit centre, fine tannins and a well-proportioned acidity structure that open up a great future for it. Very well made! SUPERIORE.DE
"Bright, light garnet red colour. Delicate, restrained nose of small red fruits and sour cherry, with a leather and light undergrowth aftertaste. Retronasal clearly redcurrant, elegant palate with fine-grained tannins, good drinking flow, needs some air and should be decanted." Falstaff
"Brilliant medium carmine red colour. Dark cherry, which becomes mineral and salty with air. Loosened up and a little balsamic with a hint of liquorice. Fresh cherry and raspberry flavours with grippy tannins." Jancis Robinson
"Aromas of herbs, twigs and savoury spices intertwine with macerating red berries and a hint of mushrooms. Beautifully firm tannins frame fresh red berry flavours bursting with vitality, while sweet spices accompany the palate through to an elegant finish." Wine Enthusiast
"A floral nose with aromas of red cranberries. Lots of juicy red and black fruit on the palate, powerful and firmly structured, full with tannins and bright acidity." Decanter
"Bright aromas of cinnamon and earthy strawberries with violets and dried cherries. Powerful, with pronounced acidity, dusty but ripe tannins and ripe fruit on the finish. An accessible Barbaresco that will also age well." James Suckling
"The 2021 Barbaresco is a blend from parcels in Albesani, Serraboella and Starderi. Graceful and nuanced, the 2021 offers notes of crushed flowers, orange peel, mint, sweet red berries and spices. The harvestwill find a Barbaresco in a class of its own. Outstanding flavours, a medium-weight structure and persistent but fine tannins give the wine its shape. This is wonderfully made." Vinous
"Aromas and flavours of cherry, strawberry, rose, hay and white pepper combine with a firm structure and lively acidity in this expressive, complex red wine, which is harmonious and long in the fruity and spicy finish." Wine Spectator

Barbaresco DOCG 2020
The grapes for the Barbaresco come mainly from the top vineyards Pora, Ovello, Montestefano, Muncagota and Rio Sordo. Deep, lively ruby to garnet red colour. A broad bouquet of red fruits and biscuits with a hint of minerality. The palate is characterised by a rich, solid structure and a continuous development that ends in a long, fragrant final. Every year, the leading Italian winegrowers' cooperative shows what it and its members are capable of with its basic Barbaresco. SUPERIORE.DE
"Youthful, medium ruby red colour. A real, concentrated fruit nose, which is sadly lacking in this vintage. Subtle marasca cherry on the palate with lots of finely milled tannins; head and shoulders above the rest." Jancis Robinson
"It is aromatic and attractive with notes of dried cherries, hibiscus, cocoa and bark, followed by a medium body with polished and refined tannins with a velvety texture and a linear finish. Fresh and floral on the finish with a bright red fruit backbone." James Suckling
"The 2020 Barbaresco is a beautiful, harmonious wine that will drink well with minimal cellaring time. Forward fruit and soft curves are perhaps a little atypical for a young Barbaresco, but this also makes the wine very enjoyable. Juicy red cherry and plum fruit, rose petals, spices, cedar, mint and tobacco come together in the glass. Classicists will probably prefer other vintages, but it's hard not to like the 2020 for its charming, exuberant personality. At the same time, aeration brings out a greater aromatic presence and also a good structure." Vinous
"Still vinous, with youthful strawberry notes, rosebud, violets, liquorice and a hint of cinnamon. Spicy and floral on the palate, dominated by firm, crisp and persistent acidity and velvety, ripe tannins of astonishing quality; perhaps a little austere on the finish. Amazing Barbaresco. Here we have the Barbaresco co-operative, known for producing some of the best value quality wines in the Langhe." Decanter
"Be inspired by the harmonious blend of cooked cherries and a range of spice blends, accompanied by subtle hints of medicinal herbs and rose water. Soft and rounded, but with a noticeable spiciness, this wine presents a fruit-driven profile with flavours of cherry and raspberry complemented by a refreshing acidity. Its polished and elegant character develops in the bottle and will age long into the future, while it is already great today." Wine Enthusiast
"The 2020 Barbaresco offers a wealth of flavours of wild cherries, blue flowers, sweet spices and crushed limestone. As always, the wine paints an exciting and authentic portrait of Nebbiolo, albeit with a little more richness and texture in this vintage. This is especially true on the palate, where the wine offers a medium-bodied intensity with melting tannins." Wine Advocate

Barbaresco Bordini DOCG 2020
Cognos Barbaresco from the top Bordini vineyard is a centred and firm Nebbiolo that is one of the more powerful representatives of the appellation. However, it only reveals its great aromatic potential at second glance: Cherry, blackberry, hints of spice and a little freshly chopped mint. Then some speculoos, walnut, salty tones and tobacco. Acidity and tannin form a perfect symbiosis and at the same time the backbone of this impressive Barbaresco, which will give pleasure for many years to come. SUPERIORE.DE
"The Elvio Cogno 2020 Barbaresco Bordini is particularly powerful and powerful in terms of fruit. This expression of a hot vintage offers a medium fruit texture with a classic presentation of cherry, redcurrant, liquorice, blue flower and spice. It needs a few more years of bottle age, but we are not far from optimal drinking maturity." Wine Advocate
"A bright, well-defined red with aromas and flavours of cherries, strawberries, liquorice and wild herbs. Smooth in texture, it firms up nicely, with finely crafted tannins and a lingering aftertaste." Wine Spectator
"Attractive raspberries and cherries with a hint of roselle and red spices. Also some blood orange. Medium to full-bodied, polished and refined with compact tannins and a velvety texture. It is ripe but fresh, with a pure and lively red fruit character and a long finish. Attractive now, but even better after 2025." James Suckling
"Dusty red berries and raspberry aromas intertwine with chalky notes, creating an electric and energetic aromatic profile. The wine showcases fine yet firm tannins, displaying excellent structure with a core of tart red fruits today that will give way over time to more of the wine's savory and mineral characteristics." Barbaresco Bordini DOCG 2021

Barbaresco Reyna DOCG 2021
Wonderful aromas of sliced plums with a hint of dried flowers. Full-bodied, with well-accentuated spice, truffle and berry character. Very long and rich, yet soft and beautiful. SUPERIORE.DE
"It has a beautiful nose of dried flowers, tea leaves, cocoa beans, nutmeg and wild berries. It is focussed and precise with a firm tannin structure and a full body. Excellent balance." James Suckling
"The Barbaresco Reyna 2021 is a wonderful entry-level offering from Michele Chiarlo. Fresh, lively and exuberant, it has so much to offer. Lush dark red/purple fruit, rose petals, cedar, cinnamon, mint and blood orange are all beautifully highlighted. The 2021 shows all the textural depth that is so typical of this wine, but with an added kick of freshness that these wines don't always possess. I hope the 2021 Reyna is a sign of things to come." Vinous
"Broad and fleshy, with well-integrated flavours of plum, cherry, menthol and iron as well as a firm structure. Skilfully balanced, with a long, fruity and flavourful aftertaste. Juicy and refreshing on the finish." Wine Spectator

Bric Turot is a top Barbaresco vineyard. The sensationally fruity Nebbiolo comes from this five-hectare vineyard and seduces with its wonderful blackberry and cherry flavours. The flavour structure is elegant and powerful, with a very long finish. SUPERIORE.DE
"Light red; clearly red fruity, inviting; fruit also in the mouth, juicy, round, fine tannin, fresh, fine, drinky, very nice." (JLF) Merum
"One of the historic wines of Prunotto, owned by Marchesi Antinor (with a vineyard outside Alba), this is a lean and streamlined expression with mild aromas of dried cherries and redcurrants. The bouquet is rather simple, although there are some spices and savoury notes that give it depth." Wine Advocate
"This red wine offers ample flavours of cherries, strawberries and hibiscus, complemented by eucalyptus and grassy notes. It becomes leaner and firmer on the finish, with toasted and iron accents providing detail. Graceful and multi-layered." Wine Spectator
"Crisp and fruity with very fine tannins and bright raspberry, cherry and spice aromas and flavours. You want to drink it immediately, but it should age well. Citrus notes on the finish." James Suckling
"Focused aromas of wild strawberry and raspberry combined with fresh bay leaf, wildflowers and sandalwood rise from the glass of this serious wine. Flavors of cranberry and tart cherry pop off the vibrant palate with notes of leather and tea finishing with supple tannins and a persistent minerality." Wine Enthusiast
"Full of restraint, liquorice, dill, blood orange, intensely floral, with lively fruit such as strawberry and orange. It has a lot of volume. Lively freshness to the finish and firm, muscular tannins that are youthful, dusty and yet ripe. A graceful classic for the long haul. Bric Turot is a single vineyard with south-east and south-west exposure in the Pertinace area." Decanter

Barbaresco Bordini DOCG 2020
Dark fruits on the nose, nuanced with spices, tar, liquorice and wild berries. The mouthfeel is soft and supple with a lasting and silky texture. Here comes a Nebbiolo that exudes character and personality. Barbaresco Vigneto Bordini is a precise interpretation of the grape, drawing a fine line between elegance and power with ease. SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2020 Barbaresco Vigneto Bordini is redolent of crushed flowers, red berry fruit, mint, white pepper. This mid-weight, nervy Barbaresco has much to offer, especially if the tannins soften a bit. This is the most floral and mid-weight of the Spinetta Barbarescos." Vinous
"Beautiful ripe fruit with citrus and baking spices on both the nose and palate. Medium-bodied with very fine tannins that give the wine tension and structure." James Suckling
"The La Spinetta 2020 Barbaresco Bordini has a spicy note on the first nose, reminiscent of cinnamon and a hint of something darker like crushed cloves. This warm vintage Nebbiolo embraces rich fruit aromas of blackberries and dark currants, and there is an earthy side with rusty nails and potting soil. It finishes with high-toned accents of balsamic herbs or eucalyptus oil." Wine Advocate

"Bright ruby red with an orange rim. Very fruity nose of red currants, raspberries and sour cherries, finely underpinned with black tea flavours and some undergrowth, accompanied by a light smoky note. Very elegant on the palate on entry, balanced and harmonious, accompanied by delicate fruit and finely structured tannins, ending on fruit in the long final." Falstaff
"Palish ruby. Concentrated raspberry fruit that is a little muted and with just a hint of oak. Sweet, concentrated red fruit with grainy tannins. Lots of concentrated fruit underpinned by grainy tannins. Should age well." Jancis Robinson
"The 2021 Barbaresco Bric Turot offers all the classicism of Treiso in its deeply-pitched, spiced personality and structural feel. Dark red-toned fruit, cloves, leather, orange peel and saddle leather give the 2021 lovely exotic elements that add to its beguiling personality. Clean mineral notes extend the finish." Vinous

First mentioned in writing in 1799, it quickly attracted the attention of international wine connoisseurs: the great garnet red Barbaresco. The vineyards of the DOCG of the same name in Piedmont - more precisely in the Langhe in the province of Cuneo - begin at the north-eastern foothills of the truffle town of Alba and extend over the territory of the three municipalities of Barbaresco, Treiso and Neive. It is a small, manageable cultivation area: hardly more than three million bottles are produced here every year. The Barbaresco cannot be explained without referring to the Barolo, because the latter has the longer tradition, the larger cultivation area and the somewhat stricter rules. Another special feature is that the Langhe 2014 was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site as a land of milk and honey for connoisseurs.
The Barbaresco is made exclusively from Nebbiolo grapes. The vineyards of wine producers such as Angelo Gaja, Bruno Giacosa, Elvio Cogno, La Spinetta, Pelissero or the Produttori di Barbaresco winegrowers' cooperative are generally a little lower than those around Barolo and have slightly lighter, sandier soils which also contain more copper and zinc. The climate in the Barbaresco DOCG is somewhat warmer and drier than in the neighbouring Denomination, so that the plants reach their full maturity a little earlier.
The Nebbiolo grape is one of the greatest native grapes of Italy and is characterized by a distinctive acidity. Their shells release many tannins, which are initially hard and angular. Nevertheless, Barbaresco's long-lived wines, which are somewhat earlier to drink than Barolo's, are on average less lavish, but are generally finer, more delicate, more elegant and more supple. Most drops have more charm because they are more characterized by a soft fruit than by tannin. However, those who wanted to deduce from this that Barbaresco, often mentioned in the same breath as Barolo and Brunello, is of lesser importance would be subject to a great error, especially since some producers also produce wines in a powerful style that can stand up to the two competitors in opulence and heaviness.
The festive wine from the Langhe can be very well combined with food. Barbaresco is a very good accompaniment to strong cheeses, roasts and game dishes. The growths are traditionally aged in large old oak and chestnut barrels in which they must mature for at least one year before being bottled after at least two years - often four years - of ageing. Then the plants, which originate mainly from good years, often continue to develop in the bottle for another decade before they show all their strength, volume and elegance. The generally milder nature of Barbaresco made considerations about how to make wines drinkable earlier less compelling than in Barolo. But Barbaresco has also experimented with shorter fermentation times and shorter maturation in new oak, achieving amazing results.
A visit to Barbaresco must begin with Angelo Gaja. Italy's best-known winemaker helped the wine, which has had DOCG status since 1980, to its international breakthrough when in 1961 he decided to press his drops exclusively with his own grapes and no longer buy any fruit from other producers. After that he caused a sensation when some of his wines "downgraded" and only as Langhe put Nebbiolo in the bottle. However, this has not affected the fame and also the price development of his wines - quite the contrary. In the past 30 years, many small quality-conscious wineries have been established. The winegrowers have remained conservative to this day. Although absolute peak levels around the 700-people village of Barbaresco are reached by fewer drops than in Barolo, the best can certainly compete with the products of the neighbouring region, so that the often-heard designation "Barbaresco" is often used. "little brother of Barolo" is actually only based on the price difference that still exists. SUPERIORE.DE
