Barolo DOCG 2020
The Barolo from Batasiolo is a wonderful and very serious, solid creature. Clear, shimmering garnet red colour with light red accents. Sophisticated aromas of leather and liquorice, plums, dried flowers and undergrowth. Straightforward and taut, the round, aromatic flavour follows its path into the persistent final with good length. This is a lot of Barolo for comparatively little money. SUPERIORE.DE

Barolo DOCG 2020
"Our Barolo (Classico) has been a successful synthesis of the various characteristics of the Massolino vineyards for over 70 years. Thanks to traditional ageing in large Slavonian oak barrels, we preserve its pure and unadulterated identity and its complex flavours." Franco Massolino
Traditionally vinified Barolo from the estate's best vineyards. Brilliant ruby red colour. Complex, spicy bouquet of liquorice, tobacco, dried flowers, violets and damp leaves. Very emphatic, firm and full-bodied on the palate. Its racy and forward style is flanked by tangible, robust tannins. Finishes with a fine sweetness, elegant and long. The already undisputed high level will continue to develop in full beauty over the next few years. SUPERIORE.DE
"Sparkling ruby-red colour with rim brightening. Phenolic nose with eucalyptus, light mint, followed by redcurrants and sweetish elements. Complex, structured palate, full-bodied and juicy with phenolic spice and freshness, retronasal again eucalyptus, beautiful drinkability with firm tannins, long final." Falstaff
"Brilliant medium ruby red colour. Rich fruit on the nose with a hint of gingerbread. A spicy cherry unfolds with air, albeit still a little restrained. Smooth, soft cherry fruit with super-fine, long, crisp tannins. A beautiful wine." Jancis Robinson
"Opens with aromas of crushed red fruits and a bouquet of laurel, balsam and sandalwood that slowly rise from the glass. On the palate, it is round and beautifully soft, the tannins making it immediately accessible. A savoury backbone is brightened by hints of orange peel and clove, creating an approachable yet complex profile that can be enjoyed now." Wine Enthusiast
"Bright and vibrant red fruit character with dried flowers, stones and a hint of tree resin. Medium-bodied, clean and concentrated on the palate, with fine tannins and a linear finish. Shows freshness and balance. Polished. Best from 2027, but already a pleasure to drink now." James Suckling

Barolo “San Giuseppe” DOCG 2020
Pecchenino has long been based in the Dogliani area and is known for its first-class Dolcetto. The property in Barolo is more recent and includes vineyards in Bussia, Le Coste di Monforte and Ravera di Monforte and San Giuseppe blends fruit from all three areas for this wine. On the nose, bright red fruits mingle with orange, rose and mushrooms. Polished, silky tannins effortlessly support the flawless ripe fruit. This wine is thoroughly vibrant with a lingering strawberry finish, and while the structure is already accessible, its complexity will become even more apparent with time in the bottle. SUPERIORE.DE
"Subtle aromas of red cherries, wild strawberries, dried roses, stones and pink peppercorns. Juicy and savory with a medium body. It has firm structure that builds up on the palate. Dense and meaty with a lingering aftertaste." James Suckling

Barolo “Cascina Nuova” DOCG 2019
Bright ruby-garnet colour. Smooth and expressive on the palate, with sweet red cherries, blood orange, mint, wild flowers, cedar wood, sweet tobacco and aniseed. Very fine tannins on the palate, spicy, delicate and at the same time very rich and clear, with a long, balsamic final. Every year, Cascina Nuova is a prime example of how excellent Barolos can be produced at moderate prices. SUPERIORE.DE
"A beguiling bouquet of cherries, dried flowers and herbs; juicy on the palate with perfectly integrated tannins, striking acidity and a long final." Vinum
"Brilliant medium ruby red with orange-coloured reflections. Still a little closed and with savoury, spicy notes. Serious and complex, it opens slowly to red fruits with a hint of black pepper, but more mineral than fruity or sweet. Still very compact and closed on the palate. Really elegant and refreshing, with firm tannins accompanying the fresh fruit on the finish. Serious stuff." Jancis Robinson
"The Barolo Cascina Nuova 2019 is bright, exuberant and beautifully lifted, straight out of the gate. Crushed flowers, dried herbs, sweet red cherries, cinnamon, spices and candy rise from the glass. Light and medium-bodied, with plenty of vigour, the 2019 is an absolute delight. I really like its energy. The concise Ravera tannins are also handled well." Vinous
"Balanced and harmonious, this red wine offers flavours of cherries, raspberries, spices, minerals and chocolate, supported by a backbone of refined tannins. It becomes even more concentrated in the long, mineral and spicy aftertaste." Wine Spectator
"The Cascina Nuova 2019 is initially somewhat reductive, but then opens up and reveals the freshness of lemon leaves, redcurrants and pomegranate as well as the aromatic depth of lemon thyme. The attack is very elegant, almost silky at first, then a little dusty on the finish with a light extraction. Possibly not too concentrated, but impressively good and graceful." Decanter
"This aromatic Barolo opens with wild red berries, fresh herbs and dried roses to create an aromatic lift that will captivate you. On the palate, it delights with light-footed, macerated raspberries dusted with spice, leading to a minerality of crushed chalk and fine tannins." Wine Enthusiast
"Attractive primary flavours of crushed strawberries and stones follow through to a full body with fine and polished tannins and a lovely, fresh finish. Vibrant is a good word to describe this wine overall. Best after 2026." James Suckling
"The Elvio Cogno 2019 Barolo Cascina Nuova is the most accessible of the many excellent Barolos produced by this leading winery in the municipality of Novello. The fundamental value this wine offers is even more irresistible in a classic vintage like 2019. The wine opens beautifully in the glass and unfolds its aromas of redcurrants and wild berries. This is accompanied by varietal notes of liquorice, cola and camphor ash in a firm, medium-weight texture." Wine Advocate
"Brilliant garnet red with a ruby red shimmer. Rich raspberries and ripe plums on the nose, with a slightly smoky aftertaste and forest floor flavour. Fresh and juicy on the palate, with fine-grained tannins and a long final." Falstaff
"A Barolo of great freshness, with the proverbial cleanliness of Elvio Cogno, coming from the younger vineyards. Raspberry on the nose, with notes of peony and clementine peel, closed by hints of mint Valdostana. The mouthfeel shows iodized tannins, supported by citrus-floral return." Luca Gardini

Barolo del Comune di Monforte d’Alba DOCG 2020
Clerico's Barolo del Comune di Monforte d'Alba shows all the appeal that this high altitude vineyard is capable of and Domenico Clerico's team interprets each vintage with elegance and intensity. Sweet macerated cherry, mint, spices, orange peel and raspberries linger on the lingering, vibrant and agile finish. SUPERIORE.DE
"Firm, rather tart, youthful, slightly smoky aroma of more red than black berries with nutty tones, dried rose petals, tobacco ash, pomegranate seeds and traces of iodine and tar. Ripe, tart, juicy, clear, youthful fruit, present, yet crumbly tannin, smoky and slightly tobacco notes, a little dried herbs and rose petals again, persistent on the palate, moderate acidity, a certain depth, ethereal spice in the background, again pomegranate seeds, some salt in the background, again a hint of tar, peppery traces, elegant, almost dancing style with freshness, very good, firm, juicy and spicy finish." Wein-Plus
"Bright, light ruby colour with garnet-red nuances. Spicy and with compact fruit on the nose, notes of wild berries, clove and lemongrass, a hint of graphite. Velvety and soft on the palate, then with beautiful tension, precise fruit and fine freshness, very long." Falstaff
"Ripe fruit and floral aromas, complex palate with mixed berries, dried plums, pressed potpourri, dried flowers and leather, with prominent tannins." Decanter
"A mix of ripe cherry, strawberry, sweet spice and tobacco flavors mark this supple, accessible red, whose refined tannins leave a light powdery feel on the finish." Wine Spectator
"The Domenico Clerico 2020 Barolo del Comune di Monforte d'Alba is characterised by spiced cranberry and blood orange. This vintage is open and front-heavy overall, but touches on all the main elements of the Nebbiolo play list. The wine is lean with young tannins. All in all, the oak is pleasantly restrained, and the wine only needs another year or two in the bottle for the fruit to fully develop." Wine Advocate
"This Barolo shows plums, cranberries, fresh roses, violets, pomegranate and blood oranges. This interpretation shows juicy acidity and ripe tannins with a slightly toasty finish and the dustiness of Nebbiolo, but with a spicy finish centred on liquorice. The tannins will soften and develop more complexity in two to three years." James Suckling
"An impressive example of the characteristics and potential of Barolo di Monforte. Blackberry on the nose, with. Notes of black pepper in grains and Roman mint. Drink intense and taut, whipped dark-skinned fruit, sweet spices and important mentholation finish." Luca Gardini

"The Elvio Cogno 2020 Barolo Cascina Nuova has a hint of smoke and barrel with lots of red fruits, redcurrants and cherries. There's an earthy element that combines well with the oak, and there's a tart or crisp side to the fruit that finishes with grippy tannins." Wine Advocate

Barolo DOCG 2019
Prunotto's Barolo is a very beautiful, ethereal wine. Rose petals, spices, blood orange, mint and crushed red berry fruit keep it firmly grounded. On the palate, it is saturated and rich with dark flavours that are firmly connected to spices, liquorice and crushed blue flowers. There is power and richness deep within this wine, the well-proportioned tannin is fresh and firm, giving it energy and drive. SUPERIORE.DE
"Light red; warm fruity, also strawberry-caramel, inviting; round, warm, full, fruity, drinky, pleasing." (JLF) Merum
"Pale ruby red colour. Shy, perfumed nose, but with a lot of concentration. A little dusty at first, needs a lot of aeration. A core of raspberry and strawberry fruit on the palate. Juicy and sweetly aromatic on the palate with strawberry fruit. Real depth, yet supple with lots of enveloping tannins that match the aromatic structure on the finish." Jancis Robinson
"The 2019 Barolo is soft, open-knit and engaging, all of which make it a fine choice for drinking now and over the next handful of years. Sweet tobacco, cedar, worn-in leather, dried herbs and scorched earth add lovely savory nuance to this gracious, mid-weight offering." Vinous

Barolo del Comune di Serralunga d’Alba DOCG 2019
The Barolo del Comune di Serralunga d'Alba is the most accessible of Luigi Baudana's three Baroli. Precise fruit with wonderful tones of black cherry, plum and cassis. The intensity of the characteristic Nebbiolo liquorice and cola takes a back seat in this wine as the dark fruit is the leading force. This vintage has the acidity and natural structure to carry the wine for 10 years or more. And so it is not surprising that this Barolo still needs a few years to develop its full class and finesse. SUPERIORE.DE
"Notes of spices, smoked wood and dried red flowers with dried raspberries and cocoa. Medium-bodied with finely polished tannins and juicy acidity that comes through. Polished and chalky on the finish." James Suckling
"It contains a core of cherry, raspberry, floral and iron flavours wrapped in a dense tannic matrix. This red wine is lean and concentrated, with lively acidity and dusty tannins." Wine Spectator
"The Luigi Baudana 2019 Barolo del Comune di Serralunga d'Alba shows the firmness and structure for which this village is known, with beautiful scents of rose, rusty nail, autumnal foliage, liquorice and tar. " Wine Advocate
"The 2019 Barolo del Comune di Serralunga d'Alba shows the full range of Serralunga, but in the somewhat austere style that runs through all of this year's wines. Dark red fruits, sage, mint, leather and spices effortlessly fill out the layers. The Serralunga Barolo is rich and voluptuous, yet super-classic and hits all the right notes. It could well be the hidden gem of the entire Vajra range." Vinous
"Aromas of mixed berry fruits, both fresh and preserved, along with notes of orange citrus, create an elegant and pure expression on the palate. The wine achieves a beautiful balance between fruit and savory elements with notes of cherry, rosebud, bay leaf and allspice. Super pretty and polished tannins make it enjoyable now." Wine Enthusiast

Beautiful entry on the palate with a rich fruit core, fine melting, juicy in the further course and with tightly meshed tannins, ending spicy and fruity in the long finish." Falstaff

"This is a smooth and flavoursome Barolo, showing notes of blood orange, wild raspberry, white tea and peaches with a hint of pickled olives. It is medium to full-bodied, with fine tannins and elegance." James Suckling
"Cherry, menthol, tar and iron flavours are present in this silky, stylish red wine. It's graceful at first, but picks up dense tannins mid-palate and on the finish that coat the mouth. Its length shows its pedigree, so be patient." Wine Spectator
"The Luigi Baudana 2020 Barolo del Comune di Serralunga d'Alba has a strong aromatic character with ferruginous earth, iron ore, dried flowers, orange peel, spices and dark fruit. Despite the hot vintage, there is also a good freshness. Fresh berry flavours give this wine an approachable character (and lively energy). This beautiful freshness is what you will remember most." Wine Advocate
"This Barolo exudes a seductive and enigmatic aroma characterised by black cherries and warmed blackcurrants, accompanied by notes of black pepper, liquorice root, aniseed and fennel. The wine's nose is a captivating kaleidoscope in which fruit, herbs and earthy notes play a different role each time the glass is swirled. The palate is mouth-filling, rich and structured, with notes of plum and black raspberry wrapped in firm tannins and a distinct earthy quality that pairs well with roasted meats, mushrooms or umami-focused dishes. This wine is a true embodiment of the powerful and age-worthy Barolo wines that have made Serralunga d'Alba famous." Wine Enthusiast

Barolo Boscareto DOCG 2016
Boscareto from Serralunga d'Alba has an intense aroma of leather and liquorice, dried flowers and undergrowth; the round, aromatic flavour follows a straight path to the lingering final. SUPERIORE.DE
"Somewhat dried floral to tobacco aroma with restrained berry tones, a little undergrowth as well as mushroomy and earthy nuances. Tart, yet quite juicy fruit, again dried-vegetable, mushroomy and earthy tones, finely dusty, still slightly drying tannins, cedary and nutty flavours, a hint of cocoa, also a little pepper, vegetal traces, very good, increasingly juicy finish with chalky-mineral tones." Wein-Plus
"Beni di Batasiolo produces two top Baroli from single vineyards, and the Barolo Boscareto 2016 is one of them. This wine contains fruit from Serralunga d'Alba and is therefore the bolder and more powerful of the two. But to be honest, the differences are minimal, especially in a vintage like 2016, which brings out the purity of the fruit so well in all the vineyards." Wine Advocate
"Spicy nose with baked earth and blackberry fruit. The palate is rich in extract, with a core of sweetness and a hint of tannin. Long finish." Decanter
"Flavours of flowers, cedar, strawberries and chocolate follow through to a full body, with a solid core of fruit and tannins and a chewy finish. Needs time to mellow." James Suckling

Barolo DOCG 2020
Prunotto's Barolo is a very beautiful, ethereal wine. Rose petals, spices, blood orange, mint and crushed red berry fruit keep it firmly grounded. On the palate, it is saturated and rich with dark flavours that are firmly connected to spices, liquorice and crushed blue flowers. There is power and richness deep within this wine, the well-proportioned tannin is fresh and firm, giving it energy and drive. SUPERIORE.DE
"Light, bright ruby red colour with a slightly brightening rim. Herbaceous and fruity on the nose, of morello cherries and redcurrants, lemon balm, black tea and rosemary; very complex. Fruity, sweet, harmonious and balanced on the palate, with fine tannins and a slight saltiness on the long final." Falstaff

Barolo Cerequio DOCG 2016
The grapes for the garnet-red Cerequio grow in La Morra. The bouquet is unmistakably balsamic with fresh flowers, blackberries, dried mushrooms, spicy notes and a hint of incense and tree bark. On the palate, the delicate fruit harmonises with a refined aroma of tobacco and coffee. Firm tannins, good acidity, yet focussed, elegant and balanced. SUPERIORE.DE
"Perfumed and very pretty with aromas of ripe strawberries, dried flowers and sandalwood leading to a full-bodied, dense and compact palate. Give it a year or two to open up, but already impressive." James Suckling
"Somewhat dried-vegetable, above all a little tomato-like aroma of rose hips and other red and a little black berries with iodine and earthy nuances. Ripe, juicy, fairly supple fruit with moderate, chocolaty oak notes, lots of ripe, very crumbly tannins and a hint of liquorice, dense and persistent on the palate, somewhat spicy, a hint of dried herbs, chalky nuances in the background, very light ethereal and iodine notes, good depth, multi-layered, still relatively compact, very good, juicy, slightly tobacco and delicately cocoa-spicy finish with a certain freshness." Wein-Plus
"Pure and fragrant nose with floral notes and sweet red berries. The palate is rich and finely textured; the tannins are full and fine under layers of complexity. This is a marvellous drop. Captivating." Decanter

Barolo Brunate DOCG 2016
Barolo Brunate, a noble cru from La Morra, shows the characteristic power and definition of its terroir. The dark fruit is enveloped in chocolate and exotic spices. On the palate, firm tannins and fine oak nuances together with the taut acid wire give length and longevity. SUPERIORE.DE
"Aroma of raspberries and crystallised fruit. Ripe and rich on the palate with fine and full tannins; great ageing potential." Decanter
"The Beni di Batasiolo 2016 Barolo Brunate offers hints of ripe fruit with an open or immediately inviting approach. There is dark currant and cassis, followed by spice, earthy tones and a whisper of black truffle. In addition to this full-bodied bouquet, this wine offers solid fruit richness and concentration. The finish is long and carried by silky tannins." Wine Advocate
"Nutty, dried-vegetable to tobacco and tarry aroma of red and a little black berries with mushroomy nuances and some pepper. Ripe, firm, tart, juicy, clear fruit, slightly ethereal notes, taut, ripe tannins, dense and persistent on the palate, fine herbaceous to tobacco flavours, a little peppery in the background, chalky minerality, persistent, firm, good depth, still young, has a certain freshness, a hint of cocoa in the background, multi-layered, very good to long, firm, juicy and finely spicy finish, salty minerality, again with ethereal nuances." Wein-Plus
"Complex and decadent with ripe strawberries, smoke and lavender. Some undertones of burnt orange. Full-bodied, firm and chewy with lots of tannins. Needs time to soften and open up, has potential." James Suckling

Tortoniano Barolo is a blend of Nebbiolo, 50% of which comes from the Cerequio vineyard, the other half from other plots, including some plantings in the Novello commune. It combines the complexity and nuances of the Nebbiolo grape with a fruit-driven and engaging personality. The aromatic bouquet shows hints of sweetness and richness with a potpourri of blackberries, summer cherries and spices. On the palate it is powerful and immediate, the tannins are clear and tangible. Will continue to develop towards perfection, elegance and finesse over the next few years. SUPERIORE.DE
"Orange peel, cherries and roses on the nose. Fresh and perfumed. Medium-bodied with well-integrated tannins and a fresh finish. It is refined and beautiful." James Suckling

Barolo Ravera DOCG 2018
G.D. Vajra's Ravera (whose site straddles the municipalities of Novello and Barolo) is always the most angular, powerful and vertical of their collection. It comes from soils with clay and sandstone at 320 to 340 metres above sea level. This is the ideal place for wines that show both power and elegance. The tannins are sweet, but every fibre of the backbone is dense and firm. Red and purple fruits with liquorice, tar and white truffle are neatly packed here, revealing themselves only gradually but then with beautiful precision and straightforwardness. The final has a wonderfully long reverberation, great! SUPERIORE.DE
"Bright, radiant ruby red with a lightening rim. Expressive on the nose, of wild berries, elderberries, also floral, then eucalyptus, plus noble spice, of black tea on the final. On the palate compact, juicy, with dense tannin, comes in several layers, energetic, salty in the final." Falstaff
"Lustrous mid ruby. Subtle, fragrant and concentrated and with fantastic depth and earthy minerally notes. Cherry and raspberry fruit with a hint of damson. Richly tannic adding chew to the juicy elegant fruit. On the finish, quite a bit of tannins that still need to integrate into the very long fruit finish. Compact and pithy." Jancis Robinson
"High-toned vanilla notes tie in with blue fruit purity. Rich and weighty with layers of fresh strawberries, raspberries, dried tobaccos, leather and earthy notes on the palate." Decanter
"This focused, fragrant red offers aromas of woodland berry, new leather, wild herb and pipe tobacco. The linear palate exhibits dried cherry, mocha and toasted nut set against close-grained tannins that leave a drying finish." Wine Enthusiast
"Rich, ripe mixed berries and perfumed bark on the nose. Medium-to full-bodied with some lightly firm tannin giving support to the fruit. Has a promising core. Give it a while to broaden out." James Suckling
"The 2018 Barolo Ravera is a powerful, tightly wound wine. Gravel, smoke, cured meats, spice, leather, tobacco and menthol emerge, but only with quite a bit of reticence. This deceptively mid-weight Barolo has a good bit of brawn." Vinous
"Seamlessly stitched together, the G.D. Vajra 2018 Barolo Ravera reveals tight layering and smooth texture. Fruit comes from an amphitheater of vines with Tortoniana epoch sandstone clay that is typical of parts of Barolo and Novello. What stands out here is the mineral character of the wine. It frames a dark core of plum, dark cherry and soft spice." Wine Advocate

Barolo “Le Coste di Monforte” DOCG 2018
Of the three Baroli from Pecchenino, Le Coste di Monforte shows the most focus and sharpness. The other two wines are much softer in their aromatic focus compared to this wine. Le Coste di Monforte offers dark fruits, balsamic herbs, spices, campfire ash and ferruginous earth in beautifully balanced proportions. This wine has a long maceration period of 60 days (at 28 degrees Celsius), which is followed by 36 months of ageing in oak barrels. This gives the wine its rich flavour profile. The fruit comes from a site of just under one hectare at an altitude of 450 metres. SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2018 Barolo Le Coste di Monforte shows some sweet oak and baking spices on the first nose. Given more time in the glass, the wine reveals dark fruits, plum, autumn leaves and forest floor. The oak tones are strong in this medium-bodied Nebbiolo and need more time to settle into the wine's lean texture, if they ever fully emerge at all." Wine Advocate
"The 2018 Barolo Le Coste di Monforte is an exotic, beguiling wine. Melted road tar, incense, scorched earth, game, tobacco and cured meat contribute to an impression of brooding gravitas. But here, too, the flavours are advanced. Powerful Monforte tannins frame the imposing finish. Still, I wouldn't push my luck with ageing." Vinous
"Expressive, featuring rose, cherry, strawberry and sun-kissed hay aromas and flavors matched to an elegant frame. Light-bodied yet charming, harmonious and persistent on the chalky finish." Wine Spectator
"The nose reveals a wild, fruity character with a sharp, truffle and earthy note. With air, a hint of chocolate emerges. Medium to full body with dense flavours of ripe berries and medium-grained tannins covered in fruit and minerals. It all seems a bit raw at the moment, but it has plenty of character and length. It's fun to try, but give it a few years to develop." James Suckling

No wine is deeper in flavour, richer and more elegant than Barolo from Piedmont. Its area of origin lies in the gentle Langhe hills southwest of Alba, where the grape of the varietal Barolo – the ancient Nebbiolo – thrives best. Today, the wine-growing area consists of eleven small communes, five of which stand out in particular. The south-facing vineyards around Monforte d'Alba, La Morra, Castiglione Falletto, Serralunga d'Alba and the namesake village of Barolo produce the lion's share of this complex red wine, while production is supplemented by smaller wineries from the remaining six villages (Diano d'Alba, Grinzane Cavour, Novello, Cherasco, Roddi and Verduno).
King of Italian red wines
Barolo – as we know and love it today – was most likely born in the 19th century and until then was considered a sweet wine. This changed around 1832, when the Frenchwoman Victurine Colbert, wife of the wealthy Marquis Faletti, brought her compatriot and oenologist Louis Oudart to Piedmont for wine production. Thanks to his help, the barrel-aged, dry version of Barolo was created, which soon became the new favourite drink of the Piedmontese royal family. This connection with the Savoy ruling family from Turin also earned Barolo its nickname "wine of kings and king of wines".
War and peace around Barolo
However, the powerful red wine only became really famous in the 1960s. The Langhe hills were officially designated as a Barolo DOCG growing region two decades later, which corresponds to the highest level of the Italian quality system. In accordance with tradition, long maceration periods until then resulted in a harsh, tannic wine that was matured in large, old wooden barrels without temperature control. In terms of its production, however, Barolo underwent significant innovations from the 1980s onwards, when long-established traditionalists clashed with the younger generation over the way the red wine was made, in what became known as the "Barolo War". The revolutionary movement of the "Barolo Boys" included winemakers Elio Altare and Roberto Voerzio, who, to the outrage of their traditionalist fathers, advocated an accessible, much fruitier style of Barolo. Against tradition, they began to work with low yields, shorter maceration times and brand new barrique barrels. Fortunately, the "Barolo war" ended only a few years later in favour of all wine lovers: while the modernists reduced the use of new wood, and some of them even returned to the traditional large barrels, the traditionalists introduced technological improvements and lower yields, which in the end brought Barolo to its excellent quality level with combined forces.
Cult character with storage potential
Today, the moody Nebbiolo variety grows in the best vineyards of the Langhe at an altitude of 300 to 450 metres. The 2,000-hectare cultivation zone has long since surpassed a value of two million euros/ha and is divided into the smallest parcels. For the sake of clarity, the MGA (Menzioni Geografiche Aggiunte – Supplementary Geographical Indications) were introduced in 2010, identifying a full 181 vineyard sites. Barolo site wines can bear the name of the respective MGA on the label, which tells customers more about the red wine's zone of origin. This is because, depending on where exactly the vines are located, Barolo shows different characteristics in acidity, tannin and aroma. Roughly speaking, in the east of the area near Serralunga d'Alba, Monforte and Castiglione Falletto, a lush, tannic Barolo is produced on a sandstone subsoil. In contrast, the marl soils in the west around La Morra, Verduno, Barolo and Novello produce a more aromatic version with gentle tannins. Regardless of the site, each Barolo must mature for more than three years before being sold, 18 months of which are in wood. For the Riserva, it is even more than five years in which the aromatic development takes its course. The ruby-red treasures from our range can be uncorked immediately, even though Barolo undoubtedly has the potential to reward the patient wine connoisseur decades later with rich fruit aromas and tannins.
