The Barolo from Batasiolo is a wonderful and very serious, solid creature. Clear, shimmering garnet red colour with light red accents. Sophisticated aromas of leather and liquorice, plums, dried flowers and undergrowth. Straightforward and taut, the round, aromatic flavour follows its path into the persistent final with good length. Barolo “San Giuseppe” DOCG 2020
Pecchenino has long been based in the Dogliani area and is known for its first-class Dolcetto. The property in Barolo is more recent and includes vineyards in Bussia, Le Coste di Monforte and Ravera di Monforte and San Giuseppe blends fruit from all three areas for this wine. On the nose, bright red fruits mingle with orange, rose and mushrooms. Polished, silky tannins effortlessly support the flawless ripe fruit. The Barolo del Comune di Serralunga d'Alba is the most accessible of Luigi Baudana's three Baroli. Precise fruit with wonderful tones of black cherry, plum and cassis. The intensity of the characteristic Nebbiolo liquorice and cola takes a back seat in this wine as the dark fruit is the leading force. This vintage has the acidity and natural structure to carry the wine for 10 years or more. And so it is not surprising that this Barolo still needs a few years to develop its full class and finesse. Barolo “La Tartufaia” DOCG 2020
Giulia Negri would certainly not have the nickname "Barolo Girl" if this wine did not exist. The grapes for this archetype of a modern-traditional (sic!) Barolo come from the top vineyards of Brunate and Serradenari, the latter of which lies at an altitude of up to 520 metres and the soils are clayey-sandy. The grapes are fermented spontaneously and then matured in large oak barrels. Barriques? Not a chance.
Deep, light ruby red colour. Rose petals, nutty notes and small red berries on the nose. The fine aroma continues on the palate: even though it does not deny its origin or the grape variety, it has an almost unique elegance and freshness that makes it recognisable as a lively and complete top wine even at a young age. Further years of ageing are certainly not a mistake, as you can impressively feel how the increasing complexity with age joins the finesse and elegance that is already unmistakable today. Barolo “Le Coste di Monforte” DOCG 2020
Of the three Baroli from Pecchenino, Le Coste di Monforte shows the greatest focus and sharpness. Compared to this wine, the other two wines are significantly softer in their aromatic focus. Its fruit comes from a vineyard of just under one hectare at an altitude of 450 metres. Le Coste di Monforte offers dark fruits, balsamic herbs, spices, campfire ash and ferruginous earth in beautifully balanced proportions. This wine has a long maceration period of 60 days (at 28 degrees Celsius), which is concluded with 36 months of ageing in oak barrels. This gives the wine its rich flavour profile. SUPERIORE.DE

Barolo Coste di Rose DOCG 2020 (BIO)
The latest addition to Vajra's Barolo line-up comes from a 1.5-hectare plot in Coste di Rose, a small MGA (Menzioni Geografiche Aggiuntive) in the Barolo region. This is a steep slope at 310 metres above sea level with a high proportion of sandy soils with good drainage, whose vines and soils are cultivated close to nature. This very accessible Barolo is straightforward, forward and impresses even at a young age with its refreshing candour. Barolo DOCG 2020
The grapes for the estate's classic Barolo (first harvest in 1881) come from the vineyards/communes of Ornato, La Serra, Briccolina in Serralunga d'Alba, Gustava and Garretti in Grinzane Cavour, Roncaglie in La Morra, Ravera in Novello and, from the 2015 vintage, also from Mosconi in Monforte d'Alba. It is more of a traditional, classic Barolo with an exciting bouquet of deep, dark fruit and a pretty potpourri of rose petals, spices, smoke and tar. It goes without saying, but this is "only" the Altare family's entry-level Barolo from four different vineyards, enhanced this year by the best grapes from Cerretta Vigna Bricco, which was not produced in 2020. The tannins are sweet, but every fibre of the backbone is dense and firm. Red and purple fruits with liquorice, tar and white truffle are neatly packaged here and only reveal themselves gradually, but then with beautiful precision and straightforwardness. Prunotto's Barolo Bussia comes from the vineyard site of the same name in the shape of an amphitheatre in the Bussia Monforte d'Alba area. This historic wine was first produced by Prunotto in 1961 as a single-vineyard wine. "Barolo 2020 is something special. It's been a long time since this famous Italian wine region has produced such wonderfully accessible Nebbiolos. Perhaps the great 2000s or the expressive 2017s are similar, but the Barolo of the 2020 vintage is certainly easier to drink than to understand. We tasted almost 400 Barolos from the 2020 vintage this year, and they are balanced, with great flavours in the best examples, with plenty of flesh and fruit concentration to counter the austere structure of Nebbiolo. But they are neither heavy nor ponderous. They are not necessarily ready to drink yet, but they are more accessible than usual and undoubtedly better than the austere and lean 2019 vintage or the structured 2021 vintage that will be released next year.
However, to understand how the Barolos of the 2020 vintage came about, you have to put together many pieces of a complex puzzle. The first key is the growing season: it was a hot year, with average temperatures very close to those of 2003 and 2017, and yet there was plenty of water in the summer. The 2020 harvest report by Alessandro Masnaghetti on his online platform "Barolo360" states:
«Apart from the first four months of the year, there was never a shortage of water.»
But that is not the whole picture of the situation. Another key factor was the absence of heat spikes. This is one of the main problems of today's Barolo, as Nebbiolo grapes are very susceptible to oxidation of tannins due to excessive heat. The oxidation of these tannins while they are still on the vines impairs the extraction of the tannins into the wine and thus its longevity."

"Grace, elegance and understatement are some of the qualities you will find in the Barolos of the 2020 vintage. The best wines are undoubtedly impressive. Nevertheless, the vintage was not an unqualified success, as the growing season presented some challenges. On the whole, 2020 is a vintage of medium-weight Barolos. These wines are more characterised by their balance and charm than by their power or structure.
The best Barolos of the 2020 vintage offer exquisite balance, plenty of class and great appeal up front.
In the last generation, a progressive vintage was often synonymous with soft, fruity wines. In the 2020 vintage, however, these qualities can be found in medium-weight wines with beautiful transparency and a lot of classicism. In many ways, the 2020 reminds me of the 2012, but with more energy and nuance, which is probably the result of a combination of the year itself and an evolution in the way winemakers work in the field and in the cellar to produce wines with more energy and tension than in the past." "For me, 2020 is one of the most exciting vintages to drink since the exceptional 2016, which also has nothing to hide from the highly praised 2019. The words grace, elegance and fragrance often adorn my tasting notes alongside the red berry fruit and floweriness typical of Nebbiolo. The best wines are simply impressive, even from winemakers who have previously been less prominent. Overall, the 2020 vintage produced wines of medium-bodied stature that are characterised by seductive charm.
It is undoubtedly an accessible and hedonistic Barolo vintage.
The Barolo 2020 does not score with unbridled power and perhaps does not have the structure of other classic vintages. But if you appreciate elegance and subtle flavours with somewhat finer tannins, this is the wine for you. The tannins in the berries were ripe and, in combination with good acidity, very balanced wines with intense, fragrant flavours were produced. Wines with an incredibly seductive drinking flow, with precisely framed fruit fullness with earthy-floral piquancy and elegant tannin structure. Just the way I love Nebbiolo: subtle, multi-faceted, unmistakable with its red-fruity delicacy and floral fragrance of violets and rose petals as well as the fine tannin trip. "Some of the best red wines in the world are produced in the hills around the town of Alba: Barolo, Barbaresco and Roero, to be precise, all made from pure Nebbiolo grapes. The late ripening of the grapes means that they are exposed to the weather for longer. And since the beginning of the 21st century and the uncertainties of climate change, this means above all heat and drought as well as heavy rain and hail. However, winegrowers have learnt to deal with this, both in the vineyard and in the cellar. As a result, today you can find excellent wines in cool and hot, dry and rainy vintages - each vintage of course with its own character and more or less finesse or body.
This was also demonstrated by the en primeur tasting of the new Barolo, Barbaresco and Roero vintages in January 2024 in Alba: the 2019 vintage (Barbaresco Riserva) is powerful and elegant, 2018 (Barolo Riserva) classic and with a pleasant fruitiness, 2021 (Barbaresco) floral and harmonious and 2020 (Barolo) surprisingly complex and with the texture of the respective vineyard. The Barolo 2020 wines tasted, which made up the majority of the wines presented, ranged from the opulent wines of La Morra to the finesse-rich Barolo from Barolo and the powerful, elegant wines from Serralunga d'Alba and Castiglione Falletto to the full-bodied wines of Monforte.
We therefore dare to make a prediction: Nebbiolo lovers will drink well in the coming years! Many of the wines tasted at the Anteprima also show great ageing potential, which wines from the tannin-rich Nebbiolo grape are born with." Vinum
