Barolo

Barolo Cerequio comes from vines that are over 35 years old. The vineyards were acquired by Michele Chiarlo in the 2010s through fortunate circumstances. Opens with aromas of freshly halved cherries, which are joined by a mixture of cloves, allspice and vanilla, while fresh roses are almost close at hand. On the palate, concentrated and lush plums and mixed berries, while black tea, liquorice and subtle earthy flavours gradually emerge. In the mid-palate, the tannins are still clearly noticeable, but with a little time all parts will be in balance. The Torriglione vineyard is a stone's throw away from Annunziata, and the eponymous single-vineyard Barolo is not only released two years later than the other crus of the house, but it is also exclusively filled in magnum bottles. Over the years, Roberto Voerzio has changed his winemaking to a gentler extraction and reduced the influence of French oak, making the purity of the fruit very expressive. What is remarkable about all his wines is his non-interventionist approach. In addition, up to two-thirds of each bunch is cut away in the vineyard to ensure even ripening of the remaining grapes. Roberto also chooses different bottle formats to present each wine as accurately as possible.

Sarmassa, for example, is one of his Barolo wines, which he bottles exclusively in magnum formats. Sarmassa is very similar to the style of Cerequio, which is not surprising as the vineyards are close together. It is luxurious and radiant, with a gorgeous inner perfume, bright red fruits and fine, silky tannins that flow from the glass, reflecting a seamless, soft expression of Nebbiolo. The exceptionally long and pure finish is reminiscent of a variety of freshly cut flowers. Barolo Sarmassa is still quite closed today and will mature at a snail's pace in magnum format compared to the other wines of this vintage.
