It goes without saying, but this is "only" the Altare family's entry-level Barolo from four different vineyards, enhanced this year by the best grapes from Cerretta Vigna Bricco, which was not produced in 2020. Racy and supple, with terrificpurity and fine balance, the 2020 is downright galactic. Red berries, flowers, mint, liquorice and rose petals on the nose. A highly linear personality on the palate with flavours of sour cherry, aniseed, crushed rock and blue flowers. The single vineyard Serradenari is currently the highest in the Barolo area and is also the historic site of the appellation (MGA - Menzione Geografica Aggiuntiva). All the more exciting when the result opens up with some aeration and maturity and reveals its full range of sensuality and loveliness. G.D. Vajra's Ravera (whose vineyard extends over the municipalities of Novello and Barolo) is always the most angular, powerful and vertical of their collection. It comes from soils with clay and sandstone at 320 to 340 metres above sea level. This is the ideal place for wines that show both power and elegance. The tannins are sweet, but every fibre of the backbone is dense and firm. Red and purple fruits with liquorice, tar and white truffle are neatly packaged here and only reveal themselves gradually, but then with beautiful precision and straightforwardness. Prunotto's Barolo Bussia comes from the vineyard site of the same name in the shape of an amphitheatre in the Bussia Monforte d'Alba area. This historic wine was first produced by Prunotto in 1961 as a single-vineyard wine. The balance and complexity of the Nebbiolo grapes are enhanced by the vineyard's different south to south-west exposures and traditional ageing in large barrels.

Parussi is the most open-hearted and fruity Barolo in Massolino's 2019 collection. It has a striking immediacy and sweetness in the mid-palate. Barolo Margheria is very refined and elegant, but also classically austere, like so many top wines of the 2019 vintage. Every year, Barolo Via Nuova proves anew why the blending of several vineyards was the favoured method of Barolo producers until the 1960s, when the fascination with single-vineyard wines began. Its grapes come from the Liste, Terlo, Baudana, Gabutti, Ravera di Monforte and Mosconi cru sites.

And certainly the old days were not so bad: silky and fragrant and with exceptional balance, Via Nuova is a real eye-catcher. On the palate, it has plenty of volume and power with beautiful mineral tones that stand proudly above the dark fruit, cassis and wild roses.
