Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2016
Beautiful and very well-balanced red wine from the three main historical areas of Montalcino, which have different geoclimatic characteristics due to their different slopes and altitudes - and thus ensure a unique balance between freshness and structure, body and elegance.
Ruby red in colour with garnet reflections, opens immediately with a rich, complex nose. Initially dark cherry, chinotto orange and violet. It then opens up to broader, more complex notes of blueberry, vanilla, tobacco, cinnamon and chocolate with a subtle menthol finish. This juicy 2016 Brunello di Montalcino offers plenty of energy and brightness, conveyed by the cherry fruit and wild berry flavours at its core. The primary fruit is surrounded by spice, grilled herbs and floral earth. The natural complexity, purity and depth of the Sangiovese grape comes into its own in this dream vintage and especially in this Brunello. SUPERIORE.DE
"Bright, noble ruby red colour with a radiant core. Open-hearted and inviting nose, slightly fleshy, with nuances of ripe sour cherries, pepper and raspberries, with an aftertaste of rose hips. Very polished and balanced on the palate, with tightly woven tannins, opens up beautifully on the palate, slightly salty finish." Falstaff
"Deep ruby red colour. Senescent fruit sweetness, beautiful ripe cherry and undergrowth. There is also an obvious oak sweetness on the palate, but there is still a delicacy here, perhaps because the tannins are so fine and relatively light. Elegant, dry, delicate, long, even juicy." Jancis Robinson
"Bringing together grapes from diverse vineyards throughout Montalcino, this midweight, almost-approachable Brunello is focused and vibrant. It takes a bit of coaxing on the nose then divulges sage, orange rind and fennel. Brisk acidity and chalky tannins meet crisp red currant and cranberry, cleansing the palate nicely." Decanter
"The Brunello di Montalcino 2016 has something spicy and slightly rustic about it, which I find very attractive. Baked black cherries, balsamic spice and a hint of animal musk create a beguiling spectacle. The textures are silky smooth, with cooling acids and salty minerals lifting the expression as they give way to tart red fruits. The tannins increase and slowly dry out the senses, but even today the 2016 is a pleasure to drink, coming across as both youthfully structured and savoury and fresh. It is a blend from the vineyards of Val di Suga in Montalcino." Vinous
"Aromas of iron, blood and cherry introduce this soft and lively red wine, while an abundance of dark fruit - black cherry and blackberry - lingers on the palate. The finish is characterised by dark, chocolaty tannins." Wine Spectator
"Dusty notes of crushed gravel and dried tea leaves are the prelude to aromas of fresh mushrooms and hints of fennel. Spicy mushrooms and olives, followed by firm, fine-grained tannins. Structured and full-bodied." James Suckling

Brunello di Montalcino “Vigna del Lago” DOCG 2016
The northern slope of Montalcino was not once covered with vines, but was cultivated with cereals, olives and cherries. In this area, influenced by the Apennines, the seasons are more pronounced, continental and the north wind lowers the temperature significantly in winter. It is therefore the coldest Brunello area at this time of year, but also the wettest. This northern slope is a gentle hill: a characteristic more reminiscent of the Crete Senesi area, right next to it, than of the two stiffer, steeper and warmer southern slopes of Montalcino.
Due to the climate and the origin of the soils, the grapes in this area of Montalcino are harvested last every year. Vigna del Lago is the vineyard that welcomes all visitors arriving from the north of Montalcino. It takes its name from the lake that surrounds it and plays a fundamental role in the microclimate of the area; the soil is a constant alternation between clay and strips of very fine galestro.
Brunello Vigna del Lago is a historic cru from the Val di Suga winery, it is an old school Brunello, from the times before the arrival of barriques and technology. An authentic product that is enjoying increasing demand. Unlike the Poggio al Granchio, which is aged in new French 300-litre barriques, this wine is aged in large 30- and 50-hectolitre Slavonian oak barrels.
It is a wine with a lower alcohol content, bright orange-ruby colour, with very fine and almost imperceptible tannins, with a floral nose of citrus notes, myrtle and fresh cherries. It is a Brunello of great richness and balance, and also has a very pleasant lightness, well-contoured acidity and a salty, mineral finish. SUPERIORE.DE
"Appetising berry-herb nose; juicy in the mouth with plenty of polish and a lovely final on notes of wild berries and balsamic nuances. Makes you want more." Vinum
"Multi-layered aroma with ripe cherries, dried red flowers, violets, iron. Very linear and tightly woven on the palate, but with a super mature, complex tannic structure that embraces the wine fully and energetically, very grippy and vertically oriented with lively acidity and vibrant final." Weinwisser
"Powerful, bright ruby. Very clear and precise nose, fragrant, of ripe dark cherries, cardamom in the background. Very much juicy fruit on the palate, opens with well-integrated, fine-meshed tannin, round and smooth, fine salty components in the final." Falstaff
"Just mid ruby. Perfumed cherry and oak nose with a hint of coffee bean. Elegant and vibrant cherry and raspberry palate, yet with great depth. Fresh, nervy and long with coating tannins adding more depth to the fruit on the finish." Jancis Robinson
"Forest-floor, camphor, wild-berry and toasted nut aromas lead the way. Elegantly structured, the linear palate offers dried cherry, blood orange, star anise and hazelnut framed in close-grained tannins." Wine Enthusiast
"This starts out with pronounced iron and graphite aromas and flavors, wrapped around a beam of black cherry and black currant fruit. Earth, tobacco and wild herb accents get swept up in the dense, dusty tannins on the finish." Wine Spectator
"Crushed gravel and dried earth on the nose with intense layers of mushrooms, dried oysters and potpourri. Dried flowers and grapefruit peel. It's full-bodied with refined tannins and a long, elegant finish. Quite tight. Juicy and savory at the end." James Suckling

Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2016
Expressive and deep, the 2016 edition of San Filippo's Brunello di Montalcino presents itself. This is a beautiful, expressive wine that clearly occupies a special place on the opulent side of the Brunello spectrum. Of course, the astonishing quality of the fruit in 2016 gave the winemakers a terrific template with which to play superbly, but the result is much more than the sum of its parts: An almost impenetrable appearance in the glass, then on the nose dried fruits, cloves, nutmeg and toasted almonds, finely rounded off by dried rose petals. The mouthfeel is sweet and mellow, multi-layered and rich in finesse - a spectacular overall impression. With each sip, its power and muscles become tangible, but it never becomes monotonous or clumsy - on the contrary: it rushes confidently and with storm and urge into a furious final. SUPERIORE.DE
"The San Filippo 2016 Brunello di Montalcino offers a slightly exotic personality with smoked cedar, mahogany or teak followed by dark fruit, pressed blackberry and plum. The wine ages in large oak cask for two years. This is a robustly textured and muscular Brunello with full-bodied intensity that transcends both the bouquet and the mouthfeel. There's a lot going on, especially in terms of the wine's smokiness and spiciness, and there is good acidity and tannic structure to frame it all." Wine Advocate
"A serene and intensely structured Brunello with cherry, cedar, walnut and dry-earth aromas with some burnt-lemon undertones. Full-bodied, yet with very fine tannins that are extremely polished and beautiful. Goes on for minutes. A gorgeous young wine." James Suckling
"Plenty of balsamic aromas preview this red, settling into a core of macerated cherry and plum fruit, framed by juniper, thyme, Scotch broom, tar and iodine. Racy and harmonious, with a solid layer of tannins underneath." Wine Spectator

Brunello di Montalcino “Paesaggio Inatteso” DOCG 2016
The Paesaggio Inatteso selection comes from Camigliano's 3.5 hectare vineyard "La Magia", which has mineral and calcareous soils. Bright ruby red. Cherry, raspberry, spice and tobacco aromas on the nose, taut, precise and full of personality on the palate. The tannins are soft and well integrated, making it an opulent, powerful and long-lasting pleasure even when young. SUPERIORE.DE
"Dark ruby red. In the nose a slight hint of strawberry, then of ripe cherries and wild berries, shows nuances of pomegranate and dried rose petal. Juicy and clear on the palate, stretches out in many layers, beautiful red fruit, with persistence." Falstaff
"Plum and black cherry aromas and flavors highlight this dense, muscular red, accented by wild herb, iron and sanguine notes. Staying vibrant and long, this is balanced, with the quality of tannins in line with the southwestern sector of Montalcino." Wine Spectator
"The Camigliano 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Paesaggio Inatteso is a tiny production of just 2,600 bottles, all drawn from a two-hectare site with sandy limestone, located apart from the estate's core vineyard block, which the Ghezzi family holds in special regard. Indeed, the character of this wine is quite different from the classic 2016 Brunello. I don't get those heavier aromas of asphalt or charred earth here. This wine is much softer in approach with delicate and pure fruit. Cherry, plum and dried raspberry cede to light spice and tobacco. Paesaggio Inatteso means "unexpected landscape" in Italian, and this wine does stand apart from the others in the Camigliano portfolio." Wine Advocate
"Aromas of forest floor, eucalyptus, violet and coffee bean take shape in the glass. Full bodied and savory, the firm palate doles out mouthfuls of ripe black cherry, mature plum, licorice and baking spice alongside enveloping, fine-grained tannins, a great showing." Wine Enthusiast
"A rich, decadent red with black-cherry and flower aromas, as well as citrus and crushed stone. Some wet bark, too. It's full-bodied, yet reserved and toned with nicely crafted tannins that melt into the wine. Vivid acidity. A poised, polished red." James Suckling

Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2016
Enrica and Ettore learned winemaking from none other than Giancarlo Pacenti. The grapes for this vinophile masterpiece come from a small vineyard in Castelnuovo dell'Abate. Deep, full-bodied expression with warm aromatic layers adding impressive intensity to the bouquet of dark plum, blackberry, dried cherry, liquorice, tar, black truffle and leather. Then on the palate, a beguiling extract sweetness, again very complex and resonant, in quiet unison with the characteristics of the exceptional terroir. The 36 months of very slow ageing in large oak barrels provide a wonderful harmony and a very good ageing potential. SUPERIORE.DE
"A taut, linear version, this red features cherry, strawberry, earth and tobacco flavors, allied to a dense structure. Compact right now, with less length than many of its peers, a little aging may allow it to relax and stretch out. Best from 2025 through 2042." Wine Spectator
"The dark and alluring bouquet of the 2016 Brunello di Montalcino really keeps you at the edge of the glass, where notes of tobacco and dried flowers give way to ripe black cherries, plum and hints of cloves. It’s velvety in texture, yet there's a lift of minerals and acids here that maintains wonderful balance. Concentrated red/black berries accumulate, coating the palate in primary fruit under an air of purple inner florals. Its tannic heft sneaks up on you, previously masked by the 2016’s youthful intensity. There’s so much going on here and so much more to come after five to ten years of cellaring." Vinous
"The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino turns the dial up a notch in terms of intensity and power. The bouquet reveals dark fruit, dried cherry, cassis, cola, spice and rosemary essence. I can't help but notice the wide aromatic presentation and the considerable depth. There is a touch of white chocolate or bitter almond as well that is unique to this wine. Winemaking is executed in a traditional manner, with aging in large Slavonian oak casks that lasts three careful years. The vineyard site is home to schistous galestro soils, and defining mineral characteristics are carried through on the close. Only 4,700 bottles were made." Wine Advocate
"This has a ripe, polished nose with plenty of ripe plums, cedar, sandalwood and toffee. It's full-bodied with firm, drying tannins. Wait for these to integrate. Lots of dark chocolate and juicy fruit on a very long finish." James Suckling

Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2016
Fine, silky tannins frame a core of crushed berries, flowers, liquorice and new leather. The wine's inner extract sweetness reveals itself only with time of aeration, adding harmony and class. Already today, a super-elegant and at the same time refined and open Brunello presents itself, which always remains graceful and fresh at the same time, despite all its fruit fullness. Our perspective: With increasing bottle maturity, the drinking pleasure of this first-class Sangiovese increases even more! SUPERIORE.DE
"Mid ruby. Deep savoury cherry nose with hints of pine. Racy cherry fruit on the palate with fine coating tannins. Long, vibrant and concentrated. Gorgeous length and freshness." Jancis Robinson
"Ripe, sweet plum, cherry and blackberry flavors are complemented by iron and tobacco accents in this suave red. Shows fine balance and texture, with well-integrated tannins and acidity and a long, mouthwatering finish." Wine Spectator
"A debut on the Place this year from a vintage hailed as one of the best in the last decade. Grapes come from a 30-hectare vineyard bought in 2017 by Belgian businessman Marcel van Poecke who has invested heavily in replantings and new cellar facilities. The texture and overall feel here are lovely - powerful and succulent bramble fruits fill the palate, gliding across the tongue while coffee grounds and dried herbs settle in the background giving structure and definition. This has an aerial quality with real finesse." Decanter
"This is so aromatic and floral with cedar, dried roses, and black cherries. It’s full-bodied, yet so refined and tight with silky tannins and a flavorful finish. Tight and focused. Needs time to open, but shows beautiful finesse and focus." James Suckling
"The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino offers a pure and classic expression of the vintage with bright fruit tones, wild cherry, toasted nut, blue flower and forest floor. Whereas the other wines in the Poggio Antico portfolio undergo aging in smaller tonneaux, this wine is aged in large Slavonian casks instead. You taste the lift and brightness of the fruit, and it's all quite lovely. Grapes are sourced across a 13-hectare site at a very high 500 meters in elevation. The name of this area is I Poggi, and the soils here are a bit lighter and rockier with both schistous galestro and limestone alberese. I love the delicate approach here, the intensity of those floral aromas, and the silky nature of the mouthfeel. This classic Brunello really stands out." Wine Advocate
"Classic Sangiovese aromas of underbrush, wild berry and new leather mingle with whiffs of camphor. Supremely elegant, the focused palate shows precision and great energy, featuring juicy red cherry, pomegranate, white pepper and black tea set against chiseled, refined tannins. Vibrant acidity keeps it balanced while a salty mineral note lingers on the close. Fantastic showing." Wine Enthusiast

Brunello di Montalcino Riserva DOCG 2015
Piancornello's 2015 Riserva offers the classic Brunello bouquet, combining earthy elements of leather and potting soil with dark plum fruit. These equally sweet and savoury sides are skilfully interwoven, and the rich, concentrated fruit of the vintage helps to smooth out the full-bodied flavours. An action that is crowned with success, because as a result the Riserva presents itself with an impressive, enhanced overall intensity. The great interplay aptly reflects the beauty of Brunello. It is a magnificent wine with great potential. SUPERIORE.DE

Brunello di Montalcino “Le Lucére” DOCG 2016
Deep dark ruby with bright garnet reflections. Impressive, deep bouquet of dried fruits, cloves, nutmeg and roasted almonds to cola, liquorice and pressed rose petals. In the drink, it unfolds its spectacular diversity and opulence paired with a fine fruit sweetness. Le Lucere 2016 has an exceptional race and personality and has catapulted itself fully into the top group of the appellation with this exceptional vintage. SUPERIORE.DE
"Surrounded by forest, Le Lucére is an east-facing amphitheatre on predominantly silty soil. While it shares some of the woodland character of the estate Brunello, there's a distinct floral personality to this: rose and violet are accentuated by a touch of volatile acidity. Ample, concentrated and rich, red cherry flavours are laced with smoky toasted oak, shored up by lots of grainy tannins." Decanter
"The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Le Lucere takes things to a darker and more earthy place. Flowery undergrowth, wet stone and tobacco lift from the glass, taking on fresher notes of raspberry and sage over time. There's a gorgeous interplay of velvety textures, salty minerals and lifting acidity in the mouth, as well as fine tannins which blend to create a classically balanced impression. Red fruits linger along with hints of licorice and minty herbs, while the structure of the 2016 Le Lucere takes a back seat through the finale. This is a very well constructed effort that should excel over the medium term." Vinous
"This special selection of fruit from San Filippo is characterized by more intensity and concentration compared to the estate's classic Brunello. In this vintage, I also discovered a greater level of Sangiovese purity and direction, thanks to tight berry tones, dusty mineral, spice and balsam herb. To the palate, the 2016 Brunello di Montalcino le Lucére delivers succulent fruit and even a touch of sweetness, all powered by tannins, clearly driven by both the oak and the fruit itself." Wine Advocate
"This is rich and very linear at the same time, with cherry, tile, walnut and light chocolate aromas. Some mahogany. Very complex. Full-bodied, yet tight and reserved with a very, very long finish. Really gorgeous." James Suckling
"This red is laden with balsamic aromas and flavors of juniper, rosemary and rose, plus black currant and raspberry fruit. There's an underlying mineral element, along with firm, mature tannins that enhance the overall elegance and finesse." Wine Spectator

Brunello di Montalcino “Gualto” Riserva DOCG 2015
Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Gualto is a dark, saturated and compact wine that shows a very unique interpretation of the Sangiovese grape. Camigliano has one of the best microclimates for a dark, velvety and opulent Brunello, which does very well in a highly balanced vintage like 2015. The plump fruit contrasts nicely with the firm tannins and acidity in the mouthfeel. All in all, this is a balanced wine with softness and extra richness. SUPERIORE.DE
"Bright elegant ruby red. In the nose of ripe raspberries and wild strawberries, also shows nuances of pomegranate, light spice in the aftertaste. Opens smoothly on the palate with a fruity-sweet core, juicy, runs clear and round into the long final." Falstaff
"Offering ripeness and texture, the Camigliano 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Gualto is a fun and accessible wine. The bouquet is very expressive, even at this young stage. I got a charge out of those shifting aromas of dark fruit, ripe cherry, rosemary essence and a touch of eucalyptus oil that lift from the bouquet. Those balsam herb aromas are well defined, and they always appear with the prettiest intensity in the warmer vintages like 2015. Riserva Gualto shows good structure and enough acidity to keep those fruit flavors fresh and bright. Only 4,000 bottles were made." Wine Advocate
"Sleek and linear in profile, this red offers intense strawberry, raspberry, rose and wild herb flavors, with flourishes of mineral and tobacco. Solidly built, this leaves a long, resonant aftertaste of fruit, mineral and spice notes. Distinctive for its bright red fruit flavors." Wine Spectator

Brunello di Montalcino “Vecchie Vigne” DOCG 2016
Pacenti's Vecchie Vigne is every year a prime example of the high class of the appellation around the small village of Montalcino. But what can one say about this wine when it is young? It has the potential to be one of the best Brunellos of this outstanding vintage, but it is too early to sum up its true class. Only this much: Pacenti's Vecchie Vigne has everything that reveals the power, size and finesse of this vintage. Aromas of cherry, forest floor, leather, spices, tobacco and plenty of other primary notes of deep black fruit. Explosive, full-bodied and still very closed on the palate, the tannins firm and even stubborn at first - but you can feel the existing depth and balance with every sip, which will make it one of the most convincing and at the same time charming drops of the appellation with further bottle ageing. Impressive, too, is the power and structure that builds up in waves and that it will reveal with each further year of patience and maturity. SUPERIORE.DE
"Siro Pacenti's wines always offer a full concert. This one seems a bit more restrained at first, but opens up clearly with air. Complex aroma with ripe red and blue plums, blueberries, hibiscus, blue-purple flowers (lavender, iris), dark chocolate, behind it many balsamic nuances. Enormously powerful and exciting, very intense and full-bodied with fine-grained tannins and vibrant freshness." Weinwisser
"Giancarlo Pacenti's selection from old vines is also convincing in 2016: multi-layered bouquet of wild berries, black pepper and violets; polished in the mouth, with plenty of richness and crisp acidity, the tannins finely meshed and youthful, ending on notes of red berries, flowers and tobacco. Convincing, but should still mature." Vinum
"Sparkling, dark ruby red. Lots of dark berry fruit, mulberries, fresh dark plums, some cardamom. On the palate a lot of compact, grippy tannin, opens up in many layers, gripping and sturdy, grippy tannin forms the backbone of the wine, then drying wood in the final." Falstaff
"This wine opens to a nicely saturated appearance with dark berry, spice and tobacco. The wine is structured and firm, owning its tannins to both the fruit and the barrique. I do find the tannins to be astringent at this young stage, so I would hold off from opening this release for a long while. Like many of the other producers in Montalcino, Giancarlo Pacenti has captured the linearity and focus of the vintage, but his house style ultimately leaves a bigger mark on the fruit." Wine Advocate
"Broad and dense, this red reveals power behind the plum, cherry, earth, leather and underbrush flavors. Will need time to shed its beefy tannins, but the fruit keeps pace on the long finish." Wine Spectator
"Menthol, new leather, French oak and spiced blueberry aromas come to the forefront. Full bodied and concentrated, the firmly structured palate delivers dried cherry, grilled Porcini, vanilla and licorice set against assertive, close-grained tannins before closing on a coconut note. Give it time to flesh out in the bottle." Wine Enthusiast
"The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Vecchie Vigne from Siro Pacenti is dark and youthfully folded in upon itself. This pulls you closer to the glass, as it slowly reveals a nuanced display of olive-tinged blackberry and plum, with hints of mocha, balsamic spice and tanned leather. It's deeply textural, with velvety waves of ripe black fruits laced with tactile minerals, propelled by vibrant acids which carry its medium-bodied weight with ease. Youthfully dense, poised and geared for the long term, the 2016 Vecchie Vigne will require a good amount of cellaring to show all of its charms. Hints of licorice and violet florals echo throughout the long and structured finale." Vinous
"Such wonderful opulence and beauty. The nose shows dried flowers and minerals with blackberries and black cherries. Purity is the word. Full-bodied with incredible depth and structure and polished, silky tannins that envelop your palate. The length is really impressive." James Suckling

Brunello di Montalcino “Poggio al Vento” Riserva DOCG 2015 (BIO)
Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Poggio al Vento from the dream 2015 vintage is dark, rich and seductive. It smells of ginger and hints of leather and tobacco before opening up further to reveal black cherry fruit and wild berries. Although cool and supple, it has a velvety texture that strikes a wonderful balance between the tart blackberries and exotic spices within. Its complexity is remarkable: sometimes sweet, sometimes sour, framed by youthful grippy tannins and hints of cranberries, spices and subtle saltiness. SUPERIORE.DE
"Sparkling, powerful garnet red. Finely marked, fragrant nose with notes of cranberries, ripe dark cherries, some prunes and plenty of tobacco. Polished tannin on the palate, showing ripe fruit notes, with grippy tannin in many layers on the final." Falstaff
"Lustrous ruby with orange tinges. At first a tiny bit sweaty, then opening up to rich, focused cherry fruit. A palate of lush cherry fruit and sensationally balanced. The juicy fruit, lined with gravelly tannins, goes on and on." Jancis Robinson
"Lots of plum, toffee, floral and cherry aromas that follow through to a full body with ripe, round tannins that follow through to a long, gorgeous finish." James Suckling
"A powerful version, this red delivers concentrated plum, black cherry, iron and earth flavors allied to a base of muscular tannins. The balance tips to the astringent side, but it's not overbearing, with ripe fruit returning on the finish. Needs time and food." Wine Spectator
"Made with certified organic fruit, the Col d'Orcia 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Poggio al Vento is open-knit and big both in intensity and mouthfeel. This full-bodied Riserva graces us with budding tertiary notes of tobacco and cured leather, but the ripe and fundamentally very rich fruit of this vintage remains firm at its core. You also get cola, licorice and grilled rosemary. This vineyard site sees ancient soils with an important component of well-draining sand, and this helps to concentrate flavors." Wine Advocate
"The darkly alluring 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Poggio al Vento requires coaxing to unlock its aromatics from their youthful state. However, patience is rewarded, as crushed stones and ashen earth give way to red and black wild berries offset by hints of camphor and, finally, a note of sweet tobacco. Its textures are like pure silk draped across the palate, as a saturation of salty minerals settle in. Vivid notes of tart black cherry and an air of inner rose resonate throughout as fine tannins slowly clench the senses. The result is one of hulking structure yet also a potent staining of primary concentration; yet through it all, bright acids maintain supreme balance. Wow, the 2015 Poggio al Vento is a masterpiece in the making." Vinous

Brunello di Montalcino Riserva DOCG 2015
Poggio Anticos Riserva from the sun-drenched and very well-balanced 2015 vintage is not initially dense, firm and closed like previous vintages. Rather, it captivates with its elegance, finesse and richness shortly after opening. Wonderful layers of wild berries, almonds, plums, herbs and cassis. Then very complex on the palate with a textbook fruit composition and a fine spicy nerve that adds tension and complements the wonderfully chirped arc of tannin, acidity and warm melting. Just 9,000 bottles of the single vineyard Il Vignone go on sale. SUPERIORE.DE
"Aromas of truffle, mocha, new leather and camphor mingle with a whiff of oak-driven spice. Combining structure and elegance, the full-bodied, savory palate delivers black cherry, blackberry, licorice and espresso framed in firm, fine-grained tannins." Wine Enthusiast
"A very opulent style with loads of black-cherry, plum, chocolate, cookie, and dark-chocolate aromas and flavors. It’s full-bodied and very layered with loads of fruit and spices. Extremely long and flavorful. Needs time to come completely together, but so gorgeous." James Suckling
"The Poggio Antico 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is a thickly textured and rich wine with fruit-driven flavors and extra fiber. The wine sings with the characteristics of this vintage that will be remembered for the sunshine, the warmth and the picture-perfect fruit. Each cluster hung from the vine with glorious perfection. There is more warmth and dark plum intensity here for sure, and you also get greater latitude in terms of those savory tones of leather, tobacco and tilled earth. The Riserva is sourced from the Il Vignone site at a high 500 meters above sea level where summer breezes keep the grapes healthy and ripe." Wine Advocate
"Sweet red cherries on the nose with cherry pit too against a savoury spice aspect, clove, vanilla and cinnamon. Tannins are mouthcoating and grippy with dark sweet liquorice, tar, burnt caramel, clove and blackcurrants. The whole palate feels quite darkly toned, rich and gently spiced with a cooling minerality underneath and at the end too which keeps it all lifted. Bold, structured and supremely powerful but still with plenty of glamour. It's a confident wine barely flexing its muscles right now - all held in check with lots more to give. Gorgeously sexy and seductive. Still so young." Decanter

Brunello di Montalcino Riserva DOCG 2015
Sesta di Sopra is not only one of our many real insider tips, but also presents a powerful and at the same time wonderfully balanced wine in this important vintage. The 2015 Riserva impressively presents a masculine and muscular personality in the glass. The nose smells strikingly of dark fruits, wild berries, sour cherries, leather and tobacco. All these components blend seamlessly together. On the palate, a medium texture and density and, as it progresses, a fantastically long finish. This is a prime example of the great 2015 Riserva vintage and a wine of great inner class and elegance. SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva balances strikingly vibrant cherry and strawberry with classic leather and earth tones. Its textural red berry fruits coast across the palate with an almost-creamy feel, complemented by hints of licorice and spice. Grippy tannins take hold throughout the long and austere finish, as inner florals slowly fade." Vinous
"This red is dense and monolithic, with gripping tannins surrounding the core of blackberry and dark plum fruit. Mediterranean scrub, tar and iron notes add detail as this finishes long and tense. Best from 2025." Wine Spectator
"Here's a precious wine with a mere 900 bottles in existence. The Sesta di Sopra 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva opens to a tight and dense bouquet that takes a little extra effort to unpack. At this very young stage in the wine's life, you get dark cherry and wild plum, with subtle spice, earth, cola and medicinal herb. This estate farms schistous soils (galestro), and that mineral imprint of pencil shaving, brimstone and gravel is unmistakable." Wine Advocate
"Lots of richness and depth to this with superb aromas and flavors. High intensity. Notes of clove, sandalwood and cedar mingle with walnuts and dried violets. Crushed gravel, too. This has juicy black cherries, vanilla and more cloves on the palate. Full body and firm yet refined tannins. Drink from 2023." James Suckling

Brunello di Montalcino Riserva DOCG 2015
A Riserva is produced in the winery only in the best years, and the result is just over 3,000 bottles of the finest Sangiovese, which presents itself in the 2015 edition undisputedly in the first league of Montalcino. Medium light red, wonderfully balanced aromas and an almost seamless transition from nose to palate. Notes of wild berries, spices and forest floor come together like a team to create a rich, deep and highly balanced growth, which is already on the podium after the first sip. Texture, structure and tannins are not to be surpassed in harmony and leave an impression in the long reverberation, dan one does not forget again. 2015 was a very harmonious and rich year, this Brunello captures the character of the vintage impressively precisely. Chapeau! SUPERIORE.DE
"A full-bodied, structured red with smoke, tar and grilled mushrooms on the nose. Some bitter berries to go with the earthy mushrooms. Chewy tannins and a long, savory finish. Lots of citrus." James Suckling
"The Gianni Brunelli Le Chiuse di Sotto 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is another beauty from this bijoux estate. This wine offers texture and depth, but it does not have the same level of luminosity or brightness that we got in the 2016 Brunello. It shows some charred aromas with spice and ripe fruit, with wide and large ambition. I got a touch of Graham cracker and brown sugar, followed by spice and ripe fruit. This is a long and generous wine, with soft fruit and texture on the long finish." Wine Advocate
"The 2015 Brunello di Montalcino from Gianni Brunelli didn’t leave much room for improvement; yet somehow the Riserva manages to take things to a whole new level. The bouquet alone is absolutely stunning, as you could sit with this glass for an hour and never grow tired of taking in its mix of sweet wild herbs, dusty florals and bright cherry fruit. Sage, lavender, spiced orange and flowery undergrowth complete this already-dazzling expression. It’s deep and silky, verging on fleshy but not quite, as a tactile mix of acids, minerals and fine tannin settle in. That said, while the 2015 Riserva is classically structured and dry, it prioritizes purity of fruit above all else, seeming to hover upon the senses and never grow tiring. Fans of Gianni Brunelli will be very happy to have a few of these resting in the cellar. The Riserva is typically made from a higher percentage of fruit from the Olmo vineyard at Podernovone in the south balanced out by a parcel from Le Chiuse in the north, which adds freshness." Vinous

Brunello di Montalcino “Podernovi” DOCG 2016
Podernovi is San Polo's great single-vineyard Brunello. Ruby red colour with light garnet reflections. On the nose, floral aromas of violets, cyclamen and jasmine, notes of fresh fruit and spicy notes. In the mouth, round, full of harmony and with a good structure and acidity, as well as very soft tannins that show excellent persistence overall. A wine of almost endless length, depth and with a distinct character that lingers in the memory. SUPERIORE.DE
"Complex bouquet of cherries, leather and dried flowers; harmonious texture, acidity and tannins in balance, long polished final. To wild boar with polenta." Vinum
"Powerful ruby with a fine garnet rim. Opens with notes of mint and ginger, juicy cherry, a little resinous in the background. Dense and compact on the palate, shows lots of fresh, red berry fruit, gripping tannin." Falstaff
"Aromas of forest floor, grilled herb, camphor and pipe tobacco mingle on the nose of this full-bodied red. The firm, elegantly structured palate offers juicy Marasca cherry, red currant, licorice and coffee bean. Tightly wound, fine-grained tannins and fresh acidity grip the close and lend an ageworthy structure." Wine Enthusiast
"A tight, chewy red with plums and berries, together with orange-peel and dried-flower undertones. It's full with fine tannins and a long, floral finish. Very reserved now." James Suckling
"A mix of wild herb, Tuscan scrub, rose, cherry and earth flavors mark this sleek red, which tiptoes between elegance and power, with a layer of chalky tannins underlying it all. With air, the ripe cherry and plum fruit comes forward." Wine Spectator
"Delicately perfumed and finessed, the San Polo 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Podernovi is very floral and lifted in personality. This vintage is very different than the inaugural 2015 vintage. I remember the previous release for its darker and blacker quality of fruit. This cooler vintage is more lithe and lighthearted, with building aromatic intensity that unfolds with caution and care. Once you've had the wine in your glass, it reveals a succession of sour cherry, wild rose and fresh lavender bud. There are light mineral dustings as well, and the wine is ultimately quite solid and structured. This bodes well for its aging evolution. Fruit comes from a two-hectare parcel in a cool and high position some 450 meters above sea level. The soils are clayey with schistous Galestro." Wine Advocate

Brunello di Montalcino “Le Lucére” Riserva DOCG 2015
Finely layered aroma of rose petals, red cherries, flowers, herbs and spices. Wonderful tension between primary aromas of fruit and secondary aromas of ageing in large oak. Elegant, full-bodied and muscular on the palate, impressive depth and silky tannins, long and intense. Excites already today and with a promising future. SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Le Lucere Riserva blends dusty ripe cherries and earth tones, with notes of sage and exotic spice to form a slightly extroverted yet gorgeous display. It boasts creamy textures cast across a medium-bodied frame, yet it's wonderfully balanced by zesty, mouthwatering acidity. Cherries, blackberries and currants can all be found here, along with salty minerals adding a tactile feel under an air of violet florals. This is tamed by fine tannins through the finish, ending with a youthfully restrained yet fresh display. The 2015 Riserva is packed full of character and fruit-forward, it's sure to have a lot of fans." Vinous
"The 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva le Lucére reveals rich and well-concentrated fruit with blackberry, prune and plum. The bouquet also has a moment of scorched earth or toasted oak that is quite developed and, to my palate, subtracts from the purity of the fruit. It is only made in the best years, and this edition saw 4,000 bottles produced. There are soft cherry notes on the finish." Wine Advocate
"Floral, black cherry, black currant, spice, earth and mineral flavors abound in this appealing red. Smooth and lively, offers excellent balance and a lingering aftertaste, with a complex finish that is resonant and promising." Wine Spectator
"The opulence and decadence is really something here with dried fruit, figs, meat and black truffles on the nose and palate. It's full-bodied, layered and creamy with intense, round tannins and a finish that lasts for minutes. Best after 2022, but already a joy to taste." James Suckling

Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2016 · MAGNUM in OWC

Brunello di Montalcino “Montosoli” DOCG 2016 · MAGNUM in gift box
Montosoli lovers will be anything but disappointed by the archetype of the 2016 vintage. In this exceptional year, this special single vineyard shows a beautifully fragrant and floral bouquet that exactly meets the expectations of connoisseurs. Thus, for us, this edition represents the ideal interpretation of grape variety and terroir like hardly any other. The Sangiovese grape sounds bright and audible here from the glass - with nuances of small berries and floral impressions of rose, violet and lavender. In the drink, its complexity and multi-layeredness is rounded off by subtle notes of anise, cola and liquorice sticks. This fabulous wine, which is already inspiring, is always balancingly soft and silky and will - even if one hardly thinks it possible - gain in refinement and expression after a few more years of ageing! SUPERIORE.DE
"Seductive raspberry-scented wine with juice and polish; pithy on the palate, acidity well integrated, tight yet noticeable tannins, pleases with its polish, demonstrates finesse through to the final. With a hearty bistecca." Vinum
"Lustrous ruby. Concentrated cherry nose with an earthy, minerally note and a hint of gingerbread. With aeration more and more minerally. Tangy gentle fruit with the merest suggestion of oak. Gorgeous chewy tannins. Very suave, supple and elegant." Jancis Robinson
"Altesino has been producing a separate bottling from the cru of Montosoli since 1975, though the vines were partially replanted in 2005 and 2016. If Altesino's estate Brunello is almost accessible already, the polished yet intense Montosoli needs time in the cellar to demonstrate its potential. The nose is discreet with violet, bramble and bay leaf taking on earthy, savoury tones as it sits in the glass. Tight and firmly fastened, the palate fuses stony notes of granite with dark cherry. Ageing is in 30hL casks of Slavonian oak." Decanter
"The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Montosoli pulls you close to the glass with a captivating display of candied citrus rinds, incense and dried roses giving way to rich cherry sauce and a hint of brown spice. It's deeply textural yet youthfully dense, as it first cools the palate with lavender and ripe dark red fruits; yet beneath is a layer of grippy tannins that close the wine down. Notes of licorice, black tea and purple florals linger on the youthfully chewy finale. The 2016 is just a baby today, and it will need a number of years to come fully into focus - but it will be worth the wait." Vinous
"The Altesino 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Montosoli is a true beauty. The wine reveals dark fruit intensity that comes forth as blackberry, plum and summer cherry. In no time, those aromas shift to the savory side of the spectrum with smoke, tar and tobacco. The results are generous and layered, offering the best of what the celebrated Montosoli cru can offer, especially in an ironic vintage such as this." Wine Advocate
"Lovely sweet cherries and heather with some leather and balsamic undertones. It's full-bodied with a velvety and lightly dusty palate. Juicy fruit and pretty orange peel to the berry character. Hints of cedar and meat at the end. Subtle and complex." James Suckling
"Rose, forest berry, underbrush and new leather are some of the aromas you'll find on this full-bodied red. From one of Montalcino's greatest vineyard sites, the firmly structured, elegant palate is also delicious, boasting ripe black cherry, raspberry compote, tobacco and licorice set against taut, fine-grained tannins. It's well balanced, with bright acidity." Wine Enthusiast
"Packed with sweet, ripe cherry, plum and raspberry fruit and framed by loamy earth and woodsy notes, this red is intense, lively and light on its feet. Balanced, with firm tannins and a salty, minerally impression on the lingering aftertaste." Wine Spectator

Brunello di Montalcino “Rennina” DOCG 2016
Rennina from the dream year 2016 is a proud parade drop - everything is in the right place here and, for the true connoisseur, a lot more besides. Deep, almost impenetrable ruby red colour. Initially a rather closed nose with mineral notes and a hint of oak sawdust. Then gravel road, mint and hints of caraway. Fleshy, powerful on the palate, with concentrated sour cherry fruit and a present but never intrusive tannin. Despite a certain opulence, it is a balanced wine that - away from the mainstream - is guaranteed to find its friends who will give it the necessary understanding, plenty of experience and patience. SUPERIORE.DE
"Raspberry, hot stone and dark chocolate flavours, precisely applied wood; the attack is powerful yet round, with plenty of polished tannins and an opulent finish. Combines richness and elegance." Vinum
"Rich, sparkling ruby colour with a fine garnet rim. Compact nose with notes of ripe raspberry and plum, followed by cold smoke and leather. Juicy, ripe fruit on the palate, lots of grippy tannins, with a sweet melting flavour and a firm final." Falstaff
"The two Cru Brunello from Gaja show the generous warmth and salty breeze of the Tavernelle zone in the central south-west of Montalcino. Rennina, assembled from three parcels around the church after which the winery is named, is the more extroverted of the two. It is still very young in its structure and fruit and has a lively aroma of garden herbs, juniper, liquorice and summer berries. The powerful, rich fruit is framed by polished but lush tannins. This full-bodied, impetuous Rennina will need some time to tame itself." Decanter
"Aromas of espresso, clove and liquorice mingle with balsamic notes of camphor. Elegantly structured, the focused, linear palate offers dried cherry, blood orange and star anise, framed by firm, tightly knit tannins that grip the finish." Wine Enthusiast
"A hint of mint adorns the cherry, plum and tar flavours of this densely packed red wine, which feels balanced overall despite the powerful tannins, with a lingering, sanguine and ferrous finish." Wine Spectator
"The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Rennina is captivating as balsam herbs, wilted violets, and stone dust smolder up, slowly giving way to a core of crushed blackberry. This is pure class, silky and elegant yet racy. Brisk acidity and masses of mineral-tinged dark red fruits saturate the palate, which is lifted by a orange hint toward the close as salty minerals penetrate. Like liquid stone, the 2016 remains youthfully structured, with a wall of fine tannins that grips the senses and a coating of primary concentration that promises balance for a long life. This is an absolutely stunning vintage for Rennina." Vinous
"The Pieve Santa Restituta 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Rennina offers intensity and wonderfully concentrated fruit. The bouquet reveals layers of wild cherries, roses, blue flowers and candied orange peel. However, if you are expecting a more subdued Rennina, you will be disappointed with this classic 2016 vintage. The wine is bursting with energy and vitality, with a lifted and particularly brilliant palette of flavours. You can also detect hints of fresh peppercorns or coriander seeds, which add a touch of exoticism to the wine." Wine Advocate
"The flavours of blackberries, walnuts and chocolate are reminiscent of shaved black truffles. It is full-bodied and complex with chewy but soft tannins and a long, flavourful finish. Undertones of smoke, mahogany and damp earth. It needs three or four years to mellow and develop." James Suckling

Brunello di Montalcino “PS” Riserva DOCG 2015
The fruit for this exceptional Brunello, produced only in the very best years, comes from a five-hectare vineyard in the northern part of the appellation and there are then just 1,500 bottles of it. Very fluid and graceful bouquet, incredibly deep and complex, with sweet extract, great richness and finest wood, almost impenetrable. Full-bodied and fine at the same time on the palate, with freshness, great structure and a precise focus on dark fruits, pressed rose petals, graphite, smoked spices and hints of savoury smoked meat. Eternally long and fine-mineral finish with a slightly salty note. The essence of Sangiovese with the best possible harmony of elegance and complexity. SUPERIORE.DE
"Shiny, rich ruby. Opens with notes of smoke, then lots of dark fruit, wild raspberries and blackberries, some liquorice in the background. Full and substantial in the attack and course, presents itself with powerful tannins, powerful depth, firm pressure in the final, can still be stored for a long time." Falstaff
"Paying homage to founder Pacenti Siro, PS is sourced from a 1.5-hectare plot which he planted in the early 1970s. Suitably restrained, it takes its time to open. Initial roasted, grilled notes speak to ageing in 100% new French oak barriques, but there is plenty more as it unfolds: sage, fennel and fragrant florals poke through. The palate is polished, sophisticated and buoyed by racy Sangiovese acidity. The tannins are chalky, almost clayey, as they cling to the palate, and it finishes with a stony, mineral-like sensation. Give this a few years for the tannins and oak to mellow and merge." Decanter
"There's beauty here, no doubt, but the stylistic preference for 100% new oak on Sangiovese is forever controversial and debatable. The wine's appearance is almost impenetrable, and the bouquet is well-integrated with black fruit, spice and balsam notes." Wine Advocate
"The purity of fruit here is so stunning with blackberry, black-cherry, black-truffle and floral aromas, as well as orange peel. It's full-bodied and very compact with ultra fine tannins that are copious and balanced. It goes on for such a long time. The purity and precision is something else, not to mention the length and depth. So delicious now and a joy to taste." James Suckling

Limitation of 2 articles per customerBrunello di Montalcino “Sugarille” DOCG 2016
Sugarille has always been the most aristocratic of the three Brunellos of the house. Especially in the dream year of 2016, when everything was right for an exceptional wine. If the 2015 is the representative of the rather warmer style, this edition here is hard to beat for coolness, distinction and finesse. On the palate, a dense core of primary fruit, excitingly surrounded by a salty-mineral vein that we otherwise only find in Giacomo Neri's Tenuta Nuova. This wine awakens the imagination, because it never reveals too much of itself, but opens up slowly at first, then in good proportion with a mysterious depth and race, flanked by direct and linear tannins, which round off the polyphonic palate concert excellently. Simply great! SUPERIORE.DE
"Complex berry aromas, aromas of flowers, undergrowth and leather; in the mouth pithy, lots of acidity, lots of breed, still youthful but finely spun tannins, the finish long and fruity. Perfectly built Brunello that convinces with its richness of facets." Vinum
"Shiny, rich ruby with garnet rim. Exciting and complex nose with notes of dark forest raspberries, plum, plus some blood orange and cardamom. Very compact and grippy on the palate, shows hearty tannin, lots of pressure, plus ripe, dark fruit, can still store for a long time." Falstaff
"From a single, southwest-facing vineyard on clay and limestone soil rich in Galestro, the 2016 Sugarille is large-framed but poised. With a brooding character, it is shaded by tobacco, smoky incense and grilled sage. The palate contributes mineral graphite notes and dense black plum, while muscley tannins keep everything resolutely in check." Decanter
"Violet, new leather, camphor and spiced plum aromas are front and center on this fragrant red. Boasting structure and elegance, the full-bodied palate delivers Marasca cherry, cranberry, licorice and a hint of espresso alongside tightly wound, close-grained tannins." Wine Enthusiast
"Notable for its ripe black cherry, blackberry, earth, spice and iron flavors, this red also possesses a formidable structure. Bracing acidity and monolithic tannins both exert their influence, yet this comes together nicely on the lingering finish. Needs time." Wine Spectator
"The Pieve Santa Restituta 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Sugarille opens to the dark, fruity intensity that defines this five-hectare site with schistous clay galestro-rich soils. Sugarille always shows more heft and density, and this impression is amplified in a balanced vintage such as 2016. But with the memory of the 2015 vintage fresh in my mind, I feel that this edition is slightly lither and more streamlined in terms of mouthfeel. The tannins are direct and linear." Wine Advocate
"The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Sugarille is a sleeping giant. Cool-toned, poised yet wonderfully elegant, it lifts from the glass with a gorgeous display of lavender and purple-tinged florals before giving way to crushed stone, blackberries and a hint of sour citrus. It's silky and soft with a dense core of primary fruits, which creates a monolithic feel today yet tempts the imagination with what's to come. Brisk acids, salty minerals and fine-grained tannins combine, adding clenching grip yet also further depths, tapering off to hints of tobacco and spiced orange. Its scale is large, yet so is its potential, as this well-muscled Brunello is geared for the cellar and sure to make a lot of people happy over the next ten to twenty years." Vinous
"Plenty of black cherries, cedar, dried flowers and red cherries on the nose, following through to the palate, which is dense and compressed with gorgeous, intense fruit and chewy yet integrated tannins. Very, very impressive red here." James Suckling

Brunello di Montalcino Riserva DOCG 2015
Dark red with light reflections. On the nose, this great Riserva shows lots of sweet red cherry, wild berry, Asian herbs and notes of undergrowth. Firm and still very austere on the palate with a well-defined fruit and present acidity. The exceptional structure is flanked by a good tannin framework, which reinforces the austerity and precision. This Riserva is not an easy-drinking wine, but will only find its full expression after a few years of maturation. All components indicate that it will then be one of the best Brunellos that this exceptionally full-bodied vintage has produced. SUPERIORE.DE
"Sparkling, rich ruby garnet. Lush, inviting nose with rich notes of ripe plums, pickled cherries and cloves. Lots of ripe, present fruit on the palate, coupled with good freshness, opens with fine-meshed tannin, savoury and long." Falstaff
"A mix of cherry, plum, leather, rosemary, iron and tobacco flavors ply the sleek profile of this balanced red, which has good grip and a lingering savory aftertaste." Wine Spectator
"The San Polo 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva (with 8,000 bottles produced) is a textured wine with hearty fruit and touches of smoked meat and spice. At its core, the wine offers dark fruit, blackberry and ripe plum. The rich fruitiness of the wine cedes to campfire ash, mahogany and furniture wax. These results are sultry and even a bit flashy, with distant background tones of teriyaki and plum sauce." Wine Advocate
"Lovely purity of fruit with ultra fine tannins and depth, finesse and complexity. Black cherries, cedar and some flowers. It's full-bodied with very fine tannins that drive the finish. Give it a year or two to open more, but already so enticing." James Suckling

Brunello di Montalcino “Altero” DOCG 2016 · MAGNUM in OWC
On the nose, dark red cherries, cherry brandy, menthol, pine wood and spices. The silky finish is enveloped by sweet, floral notes. The top 2016 vintage is characterised by its fine texture and impeccable overall balance with equally high density. For us, it is one of the most rounded, precise and rich Brunello of this vintage, with an ageing potential that will meet every expectation. SUPERIORE.DE
"Mid to deep ruby. Deeper and more brooding than the regular Brunello. Quite closed on the palate but this is real class in the making. Racy cherry palate with gorgeous coating tannins with amazing depth and spread." Jancis Robinson
"This Brunello offers ample cherry and raspberry fruit, along with underbrush and earth flavors, backed by robust tannins. Shows a rich texture midpalate, along with a strong grip on the finish." Wine Spectator
"Rose, citrus, wild herb and new leather aromas come to the forefront. Enveloping and loaded with finesse, the linear, full-bodied palate delivers juicy cherry, orange zest, licorice and a hint of graphite alongside taut, close-grained tannins that leave a firm finish. It's balanced, with vibrant acidity. Youthfully austere." Wine Enthusiast
"I love the decadent edge to the ripe black cherries, cherries and cedar with some sandalwood. It’s full-bodied and very tight with polished, refined tannins that give the wine wonderful length and focus. So long and exquisite." James Suckling
"If you have visited the site that gives birth to this wine, it's impossible to forget the view. This is one of the only (maybe the only) vineyard in Montalcino from which you can see the twinkle of light that reflects off the Tyrrhenian Sea in the far distance. That altitude, exposure and open panorama shapes the very elegant Poggio Antico 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Altero. Specifically, the fruit comes from Il Vignone, located in the I Poggi area, at 500 meters in altitude (very high for Montalcino). Il Vignone measures just under five hectares and sees loose, well-draining soils. The wine reveals dark fruit intensity and concentration with black cherry, plum and tilled earth. There's a tangy hint of tilled earth or dried lilac as well. The character of this wine is more robust for sure, but that elegance that we saw in the classic Brunello is also present here." Brunello di Montalcino “Le Lucére” DOCG 2016 · MAGNUM in OWC

This is what we call a hat trick: After we were able to enjoy the very well-balanced, fruit-driven and almost perfect 2015 vintage last year, the appellation is now doing it again. In terms of elegance, complexity and finesse, the 2016 vintage brings wines to the market that are more comparable to the great 2010 vintage. Compared to the fruity, warm and very harmonious style of the rightly highly praised 2015s, the 2016 Brunellos have stronger tannins, a somewhat greater depth and tension and less fruitiness. Our verdict: Both vintages have their merits and possess very good ageing potential, although the 2015s are somewhat more accessible.
At the same time, the starting signal is now given for the release of the Riserve from the more opulent 2015 vintage. The barrel/bottle ageing of the Riserve, which was at least 6 months longer, tended to make the wines less fruity in previous years, but this year the climate and the longer ageing benefited the wines very much and we have round, warm and very rich wines in the glass.
Below you will find some current critics' comments, which will certainly give you another good insight into the stylistics of the vintages.
"If you ever wanted a Brunello di Montalcino for your cellar to age for decades, then buy the 2016 vintage when the wines come out in the market in January 2021. The 2016 vintage marks the second great year in a row for Brunello di Montalcino following the sensational 2015, which is currently on the market. Indeed, I tasted 212 Brunello di Montalcino 2016s in my tasting room in Hong Kong and the young sangioveses certainly do have a lot of tannins. I honestly wonder if the wines have much more tannin than 2015 or they just don't have as much fruit to cover up their phenolic structure. But the 2016s are very impressive.
The 2015s are much easier to drink young but they have the structure and concentration to age for decades just like the 2016s. The slightly hotter growing season during the summer in 2015 gave the wines that added level of ripe fruit in addition to the ripe tannins. I like to say that 2016 would be the greatest vintage ever for Brunello if it weren't for the stupendous 2015. In fact, you can easily see the difference in personality and nature when you taste the two together, as I did when I also rated almost onehundred 2015 Brunellos last week. Most were 2015 Brunello riservas. And they showed the opulence, plush fruit and ripe tannins like the classic bottlings I tasted last fall before their release in January 2020." James Suckling
"If I had to think of one way to universally describe the majority of wines from the 2016 vintage, I would offer that they are like a well-muscled black stallion in its prime. They are dark yet radiant, expressive, nearly explosive at times, yet pure, poised and structured. These are wines that capture your imagination; and no matter how youthfully tense they are today, you simply can't help but revisit a glass over and over again; because in many cases, the aromatics alone are intoxicating. I frankly cannot remember the last time I tasted young wines from Montalcino that possessed such symmetry from start to finish. The best part is that this success was widely spread throughout the region; and while there was a mix of the bad, the good and the otherworldly, finding a solidly performing bottle of 2016 Brunello di Montalcino won't be difficult for any consumer." Vinous
"New releases from Tuscany's superstar appellation, 2016 Brunello di Montalcino and 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva, will officially hit the market in January 2021. These wines deliver a twofold win, with classy 2016s and flashy 2015s, that speak to the best of Brunello. With just four weeks before their release, the self-propagated hype and hyperbole surrounding these wines is growing with the unique, almost obsessive intensity that only Montalcino can muster. Brunello from 2016 and Brunello Riserva from 2015 are poised for long-term success, they will undoubtedly be remembered as important highlights on a long timeline of vintages. These are career-defining wines for many estates and for the appellation as a whole.
I see the 2016s as long-term and cellar-worthy thanks to their balanced acidity and more pronounced tannic backbone. However, the 2016s are more difficult to read at this young stage with some samples appearing more shut down or tight-lipped than others. Because I tasted these wines earlier than I normally do, I was conscious to open my samples a few hours before tasting, and I double decanted many of the wines. Once you get them going, they reveal an extra level of depth, tension and focused intensity that you don’t quite get with the 2015s. Projecting ahead, those are the qualities that will shape a successful bottle evolution. Seen as a group, the 2016s have steeper highs and lows compared to the more even-keeled 2015s, but the payback in terms of power and elegance is greater in the 2016s overall.
The 2015 Riservas have benefitted from an extra year of aging (in either wood or glass or both) before their commercial release and have had ample time to integrate and find balance. These wines are open-knit, accessible and articulate the second they pour from the bottle. As a group, they show irresistible softness, concentrated flavors and soft textural richness. They offer very attractive fruit, with bold cherry and blackberry, and it would be a shame to miss it. In many cases, I would opt to drink a 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva before opening one of the more mercurial bottles of 2016 Brunello di Montalcino." Robert Parker
