Monica Larner, Antonio Galloni, James Suckling and other renowned wine critics have impressively described in their vintage reports that the entire region has been on the move since the 2020 Brunello vintage at the latest. An awakening that is partly due to the fact that there were few distractions in the first year of coronavirus and the winemakers' entire focus was on working in nature.
Monica Larner (The Wine Advocate) confirms this: "I couldn't be happier with the Brunello di Montalcino 2020. After tasting it, I had two main thoughts: 1. these are the wines I want to drink and 2. this is the vintage Montalcino needs. 2020 was a year when we were locked in our homes during the COVID-19 pandemic. For the winemakers, it was an opportunity to pause, reflect and spend more time among the vines. I have a feeling that this was much more important than anyone could have imagined." (...)
And Antonio Galloni (Vinous) sums it up as follows: "You can say a lot about the 2020 vintage: some will call it elegant. Most will say it is energetic. The wines are undoubtedly aromatic and fruit-driven. Between all these wines, which sometimes beguile the senses and are best drunk in the near future, there is another level of undeniably elegant and harmonious wines that soothe the palate and the soul."
And there is not much to say about the Riserve wines from the dream vintage 2019 that have also arrived: the high ratings speak for themselves and confirm that all those winemakers who have catapulted this wine category to new heights with moderate use of wood, longer barrel ageing and, of course, the outstanding quality of their best grape material.
