Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2019 (BIO)
Camigliano's Brunello di Montalcino 2019 shows impressive balance and integrity. It contrasts the delicate sweetness of the fruit beautifully with the ethereal and liquorice-like aromas that simply come automatically to Sangiovese when it is grown on the south side of the spectacular Montalcino appellation. Blood orange, redcurrant and wild blueberry on the nose, with a hint of salt and herbaceous notes in the background. On the palate, it impresses with its balanced intensity and lively tannins. The harmonious, very juicy finish surprises with playful notes of warm cherry sweetness, the footprint of Camigliano's wine identity, complemented by a fine mineral vein. This is a highly respectable Camigliano wine from a wonderful vintage, in which the winery is able to fully capitalise on the perfect climate of the vintage. SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino exudes a pretty bouquet of dried roses and strawberries accompanied by Tuscan dust. It is silky-smooth and polished, with ripe red berries flowing over a stream of vibrant acidity. Orange and cedar notes linger as the 2019 finishes with soft tannins and a pleasantly bitter note." Vinous
"Layers of juicy red cherries, spice and woody aromas, filled with dark red fruits and firm tannin." Decanter
"Lots of dried fruit, such as figs, dried plums and savoury herbs, followed by lingering dried meat notes and sweet and sour undertones. Medium-bodied with polished tannins. A slightly nutty aftertaste." James Suckling
"The Camigliano 2019 Brunello di Montalcino offers a combination of dark fruits, ripe blackberries and roasted cardamom or cumin from 24 months of ageing in large oak barrels. This organically grown wine shows a rich concentration and oak-driven intensity that fits into the context of classic Brunello. Ultimately, the wine reflects a warm growing area with a mixture of clay, sand and rocky soils. It offers a light texture on the mid-palate with chalky tannins." Wine Advocate
"The fruit is rather dark for the vintage, reminiscent of black cherry, blackberry and dark plum, while earth and wild herb accents add detail. Tightly woven tannins mingle quickly and leave a compact, powdery sensation on the finish." Wine Spectator
"The beautiful label of a sustainable project, that of the Ghezzi family, which focuses on the manic care of farm labour. Notes of wild strawberries on the nose, a hint of rosehip and ginger, then lemon sage. Iodised, salty tannins on the palate, with floral notes." Luca Gardini

Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2019
Beautiful and very well-balanced red wine from the three main historical areas of Montalcino, which have different geoclimatic characteristics due to their different slopes and altitudes, thus ensuring a unique balance between freshness and structure, body and elegance. Ruby red in colour with garnet hues, it opens immediately with a rich, complex nose. Initially dark cherry, chinotto orange and violet. It then opens up to broader, more complex notes of blueberry, vanilla, tobacco, cinnamon and chocolate with a subtle menthol finish. The primary fruit is surrounded by spice, grilled herbs and floral earth; nice length. SUPERIORE.DE
"Bright ruby red colour. Cherry and tomato leaf on the nose, then a fine leather flavour. Good freshness and juicy fruit on the palate, shows firm body and pressure, accessible, delicately bitter on the final." Falstaff
"Deep ruby red colour. Compact and dense on the nose with notes of sweet raspberries and fresh mint. Lots of sweet raspberry fruit on the palate with a tangy acid nerve that runs through the fullness of the fruit. Firm but ripe and fine-grained tannins. A fairly rich wine, but one that will probably age well." Jancis Robinson
"The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino exudes hints of wild berries, violet pastille and sweet smoke. This is a seductive effort with juicy acidity and vibrant red and blue fruits swirling throughout. Autumnal spices and dark chocolate slowly saturate towards the finish. The 2019 finishes long yet remarkably fresh with a hint of liquorice and slightly grippy tannins. The 2019 aims to please and will provide early satisfaction after a short stay in the cellar while the single-vineyard wines slowly mature." Vinous
"The Brunello from the Val di Suga vineyard is made up of equal parts from the Vigna del Lago vineyard in the north-east, Poggio al Granchio in the south-east and Vigna Spuntali in the south-west of Montalcino. The bright ruby red colour and youthful freshness are well preserved. Concentrated aromas of red cherry with a hint of pepper fade into deep violet and sweet earth. The medium-bodied palate is appealing and pure, offering layers of lush red berry and plump persimmon flavours underscored by juicy acidity. The sandy textured tannins are supple and yielding. Hard to resist." Decanter
"This lively red wine is smooth and harmonious, with strawberry, cherry and blackcurrant fruit flavours underpinned by mineral and wild herbal notes. Dusty tannins give it grip and texture on the finish. Excellent length." Wine Spectator
"A blend of three vineyards belonging to three different sides of the appellation. Durone di Vignola on the nose, a hint of lemon thyme and clementine peel. Juicy on the palate, with a hint of savoury and balsamic notes. Persistent." Luca Gardini

Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2016
Beautiful and very well-balanced red wine from the three main historical areas of Montalcino, which have different geoclimatic characteristics due to their different slopes and altitudes - and thus ensure a unique balance between freshness and structure, body and elegance.
Ruby red in colour with garnet reflections, opens immediately with a rich, complex nose. Initially dark cherry, chinotto orange and violet. It then opens up to broader, more complex notes of blueberry, vanilla, tobacco, cinnamon and chocolate with a subtle menthol finish. This juicy 2016 Brunello di Montalcino offers plenty of energy and brightness, conveyed by the cherry fruit and wild berry flavours at its core. The primary fruit is surrounded by spice, grilled herbs and floral earth. The natural complexity, purity and depth of the Sangiovese grape comes into its own in this dream vintage and especially in this Brunello. SUPERIORE.DE
"Bright, noble ruby red colour with a radiant core. Open-hearted and inviting nose, slightly fleshy, with nuances of ripe sour cherries, pepper and raspberries, with an aftertaste of rose hips. Very polished and balanced on the palate, with tightly woven tannins, opens up beautifully on the palate, slightly salty finish." Falstaff
"Deep ruby red colour. Senescent fruit sweetness, beautiful ripe cherry and undergrowth. There is also an obvious oak sweetness on the palate, but there is still a delicacy here, perhaps because the tannins are so fine and relatively light. Elegant, dry, delicate, long, even juicy." Jancis Robinson
"Bringing together grapes from diverse vineyards throughout Montalcino, this midweight, almost-approachable Brunello is focused and vibrant. It takes a bit of coaxing on the nose then divulges sage, orange rind and fennel. Brisk acidity and chalky tannins meet crisp red currant and cranberry, cleansing the palate nicely." Decanter
"The Brunello di Montalcino 2016 has something spicy and slightly rustic about it, which I find very attractive. Baked black cherries, balsamic spice and a hint of animal musk create a beguiling spectacle. The textures are silky smooth, with cooling acids and salty minerals lifting the expression as they give way to tart red fruits. The tannins increase and slowly dry out the senses, but even today the 2016 is a pleasure to drink, coming across as both youthfully structured and savoury and fresh. It is a blend from the vineyards of Val di Suga in Montalcino." Vinous
"Aromas of iron, blood and cherry introduce this soft and lively red wine, while an abundance of dark fruit - black cherry and blackberry - lingers on the palate. The finish is characterised by dark, chocolaty tannins." Wine Spectator
"Dusty notes of crushed gravel and dried tea leaves are the prelude to aromas of fresh mushrooms and hints of fennel. Spicy mushrooms and olives, followed by firm, fine-grained tannins. Structured and full-bodied." James Suckling

Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2018 (BIO)
When we discovered this winery by chance in the early 2000s, we were struck at first sight by the modesty and purism of the Biliorsi family. This is still the case today, here they remain true to themselves and their philosophy and in good years bring just 10,000 bottles of a "somewhat different" Brunello into the cellar.
Deep dark ruby red, on the nose small black berries, cedar wood, forest floor and a fine nutty roasted aroma. The palate is complex and powerful, with earthy-rustic nuances and a complex mixture of dark fruit, precious woods, a fine plum note and some chocolate. Very intense, impulsive and long and not at all for lovers of polished standard wines. SUPERIORE.DE
"Presents itself with a fine cherry, floral aroma; juicy on the palate, the acidity perfectly integrated, nice polish, elegant and with good length." Vinum
"The organic Fornacina 2018 Brunello di Montalcino is a dark and savory wine with black fruit, exotic spice, rusty nail and dry rose petal. There are hints of mild astringency, but the tannins are on track for near or medium-term integration. In fact, this wine is best consumed in the next couple of years while those dark fruit tones are still intact. Exactly 8,188 bottles were released." Wine Advocate
"Savory and a little reductive to begin with but then opens up with aromas of wet earth, oregano, sweet berries, cherries and licorice. Medium-bodied with firm, chewy tannins. Well structured throughout with an expressive finish. Better from 2024." James Suckling

Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2019 (BIO)
The 2019 vintage leaves no doubt about its origin from a top vintage in Montalcino. The fruit for Poggio Landis Brunello is harvested at altitudes of 200 to 300 metres above sea level. Interesting aromas of wild cherry, plum and crushed flowers. Taut, polished yet traditional character on the palate. It fits perfectly into the house style, which favours an elegant and less extract-rich approach. A highly sophisticated charmer across the board. SUPERIORE.DE
"This slender red wine offers a core of cherry and strawberry fruit interspersed with earth, tobacco and mineral accents. Stiff tannins take the lead on the chewy finish." Wine Spectator
"The Poggio Landi 2019 Brunello di Montalcino has a hint of teak or Indian furniture shop, which gives this wine a slightly exotic personality. To this I would add dark fruits, dried currants and sweet blueberries. It finishes with medium fruit weight and open knit tannins that give the wine accessibility." Wine Advocate

Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2018 (BIO)
The Brunello di Montalcino 2018 from controlled organic cultivation shows its graceful and delicate side, with wild cherries, blue flowers and warm earthiness. On the palate, the wine is silky and supple, with a hint of crushed minerals and limestone. The fresh acidity makes for a long but wonderfully elegant finish. The final is surprisingly fresh, almost juicy, with a subtle tug of youthful tannins and a hint of liquorice that slowly fades. Not a powerhouse, but a beautifully balanced Brunello of the vintage. SUPERIORE.DE
"It delivers cherry and strawberry fruit layered with earth and spice, supported by compact, vibrant tannins. This red has calmed down with aeration but still needs time to integrate as it still leans towards the dry side in balance." Wine Spectator
"A soft and refined Brunello from 2018 with creamy tannins and a flattering texture. It is medium-bodied with beautiful fruit and a fresh finish. Crushed mussels at the end." James Suckling
"The nose is predominantly earthy, mineral and stony, but a powerful herbaceousness and delicate, just-ripe cherries provide balance. On the palate, fruit goes on the offensive against a persistent earthiness that's empowered by chalky tannins and buzzy acid." Wine Enthusiast
"The Poggio Landi 2018 Brunello di Montalcino from organic farming manages to emphasise the bright fruit, which is not always the case with other wines, especially in this difficult vintage. Red cherry, raspberry and blackcurrant are at the centre of this wine. These tones are framed by light spice, pressed rose and candied orange peel. This wine stands out from the crowd thanks to its lively primary intensity and transparent Sangiovese characteristics. The finish is lean and streamlined." Wine Advocate

Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2018
Full, rich ruby red colour. Refined bouquet of raspberry, pomegranate and a hint of white pepper. Full-bodied and multi-layered on the palate with a very classic Sangiovese style, powerful, intense and yet very harmonious. With its noble tannin, it strides confidently into a long, fascinatingly deep finish. A classic and contrasting expression of the vintage with a little "more" of the texture and power that characterises the family winery from the Castelnuovo dell'Abate area. SUPERIORE.DE
"Sour and cooked cherries, oranges, milk chocolate and red licorice. Fruity and succulent with a medium to full body and creamy tannins. Ripe and velvety finish." James Suckling
"Sleek and focused, with a supple feel to the cherry, raspberry, hibiscus and chalky mineral flavors. Well-balanced, finishing with a crisp feel now that should stretch out nicely in time." Wine Spectator
"The 2018 Brunello di Montalcino opens like a spice box full of exotic treasures. Steeped cherries, crushed cranberries, violet pastille, spiced blood orange and dusty rose can all be found as it opens in the glass. It splashes across the palate, full of energy and juicy in style, with a seductive core of ripe wild berry fruits and inner florals. This doesn’t miss a beat, finishing amazingly fresh and vibrant, with nuances of blackberry and sour citrus framed by a subtle staining of fine tannins. Fanti really outdid themselves; the 2018 Brunello is a beauty." Vinous
"The 2018 Brunello di Montalcino immediately reminds you of the austerity and brawn inherent to this important category of wine. Brunello is released five years after the harvest precisely to allow complexity to develop in the bottle. That careful evolution has transpired nicely here. The wine shows dark plum and dried blackberry in a leading role, with spice, tar, tobacco and campfire ash at the back. The tannins are present but on the soft side, and the wine weighs in with medium-rich fruit weight." Wine Advocate

Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2019 (BIO)
Beautifully weighted, the 2019 edition is full yet agile with enough structure to carry it over the next decade. Above all, it emphasises the freshness and balance of the vintage: the aromas unfold slowly, but are very floral, with cherry and thyme blossoms underscored by peppery notes. Crisp red plums and juicy cherries dominate the palate, with the youthful, grippy tannins needing a little time to integrate perfectly. SUPERIORE.DE
"It opens with a fruity flavour of red and blue fruits, with spicy notes reminiscent of cinnamon and cardamom. Dense and creamy in the mouth, very juicy, still a little grippy in the tannins, a modern Brunello that should be ready to drink in 1 to 2 years." Weinwisser
"Bright ruby red colour. Ripe blackberries, some undergrowth, dried oregano and loam on the nose. Great tension on the palate, juicy, dark fruit, tightly woven tannins and a precise final with pressure." Falstaff
"Deep to dark ruby red in colour. Deep, brooding and backward on the nose, but with real precision. Lots of juicy red fruit and impressive, fine-grained tannins. Still a little embryonic, but already hard to resist. Pure class." Jancis Robinson
"Pure and refined wine with lively raspberries, red cherries, rosehips and a hint of citrus blossom. Medium to full-bodied with firm but silky tannins. Excellent acid backbone. Enjoyable now, but give it another two to three years to develop." James Suckling
"Deep notes of dried black cherries meet cedar shavings and worn leather as the seductive Brunello di Montalcino 2019 slowly unfolds in the glass. It is surprisingly juicy and energising, with a pure blend of red fruits and inner flowers accompanied by fresh acidity. Fine tannins assert themselves on the finish as the 2019 takes on a youthful tension and pinches the cheeks, while tart cranberry notes fade into a youthful, crisp final." Vinous
"The certified organic Col d'Orcia 2019 Brunello di Montalcino shows ripe fruit, blackberry, earthy notes, liquorice and, generally speaking, a much bigger and riper fruit profile compared to its peers. It offers a full-bodied Brunello opulence that can be enjoyed in the short or medium term, and the wine delivers flavours of dried fruit such as plum and fig to finish. The tannins are velvety and contribute to the richness of the rather forward and immediate mouthfeel." Wine Advocate
"The 2019 is immediately inviting and expressive. It seduces with lovely tones of red rose, cherry and sweet thyme. Expansive and spacious, the palate unfolds fluidly with layers of delicious red plum and pomegranate. Hibiscus, rosewater and orange hide in every crevice. A brilliant demonstration of the flavourful juiciness of Sangiovese. Deceptively gentle at the start, fine sandy tannins build in a worthy crescendo." Decanter
"This densely packed version is resonant and persistent, with fine integration of all its components, though today it is compact and austere, revealing flavours of cherry, raspberry, rose, earth and minerals. Give it the benefit of the doubt." Wine Spectator
"Notes of marasca, geranium and eucalyptus on the nose. Juicy tannins on the palate, balsamic and floral notes, compact flavour and crispness." Luca Gardini

Brunello di Montalcino “Ugolforte” DOCG 2018 (BIO)
On the classic bouquet, ripe cherry, tobacco and some damp earth. On the palate, first the pure Sangiovese feeling: beautiful small red berries, wild cherry, lively acidity. Then an impenetrable mesh of red and black fruits, which together with a fine web of tannins and minerals reveal more and more of themselves. Compressed and with each sip more open and present, the beautifully diversified taste components present themselves until they then lead into an aristocratically long and fresh finish with a hint of liquorice. SUPERIORE.DE
"Somewhat woody, also dried-vegetable to herbal and earthy, with air increasingly preserved-fruity scent of mixed berries and a little plums with cedary hints. Quite firm, positively implied marmalade-like fruit with more red components than on the nose, smoky and wood spice aromas, quite present, ripe, relatively friable tannin, some bite, ethereal spice on the palate, salty-mineral, persistent, a little herbal, gaining depth with air, very good, juicy and spicy finish with bite." Wein-Plus
"The 2018 Brunello di Montalcino Ugolforte is unobtrusive, bright and delicate in the glass, with white pepper, beautiful rose and nuances of dried strawberries. It coats the palate with soft textures and soothing ripe red fruits contrasted with savoury spices and inner herbal notes. The 2018 lingers long, showing balsamic nuances and salty liquorice, while gentle tannins do not slow down the momentum. It will be interesting to follow this understated beauty through to maturity." Vinous
"The 2018 Brunello di Montalcino Ugolforte shows medium-dark concentration and a savoury character with black spices, saddle leather and some distant hints of cured meat. I always associate Ugolforte with a more modern style of wine that brings spices, ripe fruit and soft tannins to the fore. This vintage offers all these qualities with a soft and approachable mouthfeel." Wine Advocate
"This red wine features aromas and flavours of cherry, plum, thyme, sage and clay. Lively and firmly structured, with a salty undercurrent. An open wine with beautiful balance, fine energy and a long, resonant finish." Wine Spectator
"Excellent interpretation of the 2018 vintage from Tenuta San Giorgio, the last estate acquired by the ColleMassari group. We are in the south-eastern area of Montalcino, starting from a raw material of great crispness. Notes of blackcurrant on the nose, then laurel lashes and hints of blood orange peel. Iodine tannins on the palate, with a fruity finish." Luca Gardini

Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2019
In the very well-balanced 2019 vintage, the winery offers us an extremely flavoursome and juicy wine that carries the spirit of Montalcino from the first to the last sip. Fine notes of sage and mint beautifully round off the warm, ripe and extremely rich fruit bouquet. The palate prances with a fine red berry acid wire that is underpinned by a great velvety texture. On the other hand, it is a taut, precise and particularly fresh Brunello that delights us even at a young age. SUPERIORE.DE
"Dark, spicy bouquet with fully ripe fruit, blue berries, ripe cherries, leather and sweet spices. Juicy and beguiling on the palate with redcurrant and pomegranate, followed by tobacco and delicate mineral and herbal notes with balsamic nuances. Very juicy and full of finesse, full of crackling tension and yet so seductive, stylish and powerful. It scores with its subtle and refined style on the spicy final." Weinwisser
"Bright ruby-garnet colour with a brightening rim. Extremely appealing nose, fine aromas of roses, ripe dark cherries, fresh blackberries and a hint of saffron. Supple on the palate with lush fruit, but then also shows grippy, present tannins, firm pressure on the final, long finish." Falstaff
"The Brunello is made from a large number of south-facing, airy plots at an altitude of 240 to 360 metres. The exceptionally fragrant 2019 wine smells of sweet Mediterranean herbs, arbutus and raspberries. It is medium-bodied with soft, sandy tannins and captivates with its tangerine freshness. While a hint of warming alcohol shines through, it retains its graceful stature." Decanter
"Sour cherries with undertones of stone and bark in the flavours. Medium body, firm tannins and a long, linear finish that ends tightly. However, it softens with age. Subtle bark and dried mushroom character at the end." James Suckling
"Dusky cherry and plum flavors are the main themes in this red, with accents of leather, spices and wild herbs. Lively and focused, with excellent harmony and a sequel of ripe cherry on the lingering finish." Wine Spectator
"This wine is not to be confused with a Brunello. The Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona 2019 Brunello di Montalcino shows a beautiful continuity that unfolds in sync on the nose and palate. There are aromas of grilled watermelon, red cherry, garden herbs and violets, and there is a charred note reminiscent of toasted oak. The bouquet is very balanced, but on the palate it is much more powerful, thanks to the high alcohol content of 15% and the young tannins that hit the palate. Give this wine a few more years of bottle ageing." Wine Advocate
"A compact Brunello from Ciacci Piccolomini. The nose opens with notes of cranberry, then marjoram and a hint of eucalyptus. Juicy and taut drinkability, tasty tannins, closes with a return of small fruits and balsamic sensations." Luca Gardini

Rose petals, mint, cinnamon, dark sweet cherries and smoke lift from the glass in a translucent, wiry Brunello that builds on energy, power and opulence. Here, length and fruit are in the foreground and, together with a clearly defined tannin structure, Leopoldo Franceschi's team has produced a wine here in a very classic vintage that will really reveal itself over the next few years. As always, it is one of our favourites, and its still outstanding value is also great fun! SUPERIORE.DE
"Wide-ranging bouquet with lots of cedar, ripe red and dark fruits, wild strawberries, cassis and red currants. Behind this, the wood barrel ageing also shows with fine cedar, cloves and dark spices as well as herbs. Rich, almost meaty and dense palate, not quite as dense as 2016, but immensely present freshness and dynamism, also the tannin network seems a bit leaner than usual and of best quality. Very persistent and long aftertaste with crunchy berries on the final." Weinwisser
"Firm, a touch animalic aroma of ripe mixed berries and a hint of plums with fleshy notes, tart nutty hints, pepper and ethereal herbal tones. Taut, tart, ripe, quite dense fruit, present, fine, youthful tannin and some acid bite, persistent, slightly herbaceous, tobacco and peppery, clearly salt in the background, plenty of power but also freshness, not eternally deep but perfectly vinified, very good, firm, tart finish." Wein-Plus
"Bright ruby red. Spicy-animalic nose, then ripe Amarena cherry and plum, walnut, undergrowth, shoe polish. On the palate equally earthy tones, wide-meshed tannin, plus dark fruit." Falstaff
"Shiny, deep ruby red. In the nose still quite closed with just a hint of Moroccan leather. On the palate pure cherry fruit flavours with lots of ripe acidity. Fantastic, compact, gravelly tannins that are a real tour de force in this vintage. A hedonistic whole that you can already approach but will improve with time." Jancis Robinson
"A smoky entry leads to leather and tobacco nuances that repeat on the palate. The 2018 is packed with flavours of cherries and baking spices. It feels medium-bodied but is very rich and its powerful bite contributes positively to the pleasing mouthfeel. It will get even better with another year in bottle." Decanter
"This is a flavourful, complex Brunello with aromas of fresh and sour cherries, plums, bay leaves, rosemary and olives. Also cloves and liquorice. It is medium to full-bodied with firm, fine-grained tannins. Supple and well integrated, with a long and deliciously spicy finish." James Suckling
"The Il Poggione 2018 Brunello di Montalcino shows a dark and spicy character with more fruit weight and concentration than can be found in many of its competitors. This wine shows a dense focus padded with dark cherry, blackberry, roasted spice, mahogany smoked meat and ploughed earth. Despite the powerful flavours, this Sangiovese is actually quite lean and polished in texture. The tannins are soft and easily accessible. The estate's Riserva Vigna Paganelli was not made in 2018, so the fruit from this wine came here instead." Wine Advocate
"The dense structure sets the pace for this red wine, with aromas of cherry, raspberry, mint and tar that are appealing and expressive. Rosehip, orange peel and earth are evident in the long, expansive aftertaste. It is designed to last a long time." Wine Spectator
"The 2018 Brunello di Montalcino impresses from the first swirl of the glass, with a heady burst of exotic spices and crushed ash giving way to dried black cherries and grilled herbs. It combines the energy of the vintage with the dark, balsamic fruits of Montalcino's southern foothills, while zesty acidity maintains balance and minerals saturate towards the finish. The finish is long, savoury and structured, but its tannins are rounder than expected, giving it a classic feel but also leaving a delicious sensation that tempts the taster to reach for the glass again and again. The 2018 is certainly one of the top wines of the vintage, not to be missed." Vinous
"One of the first wineries to deal in Brunello, one of the founding members of the Consortium. A Brunello characterised by freshness, pomegranate on the nose, hints of citrus thyme and white pepper. The palate has juicy tannins with a fruity return." Luca Gardini

Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2019
The vines for the Brunello are planted in Galestro soils with clay and slate on a 3.5-hectare plot, with a total production of less than 15,000 bottles per vintage. Powerful, bright ruby colour, light garnet hue. Red liquorice, dried roses, a hint of cedar wood and black cherry make up the seductive bouquet. The fruit has a certain density and heaviness, which is emphasised by oak notes and the wine's tannins. On the palate, a silky texture with a sweet and sour expression of red berry fruit and minerals led by savoury acids, while grippy tannins build towards the end. Very full-bodied and gripping with great potential, but still needs some bottle ageing. SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino is earthy and savoury in the best possible way with an almost rustic blend of old cedar spice box and dried roses underscored by orange peel and bright cherries. This wine is wonderfully pure and silky, with an appropriate inner sweetness and an abundance of ripe red and blue fruit swirling throughout. The juicy acidity maintains a lovely energy as the 2019 finishes long. Fine-grained tannins saturate, and an aftertaste of tart cranberry lingers on the cheeks. This energetic and supple Brunello from Cerbaia will only need a short ageing period to show its best side." Vinous
"So floral and fresh with rose stem, sandalwood and orange blossom. Also cherries. Full-bodied yet restrained, with creamy, fine tannins and a lovely finish. Shows brightness and finesse. Silky texture. One of the best Brunellos I have ever tasted. A Brunello that emphasises the purity of the fruit. Give it another three to four years." James Suckling

Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2018
Bright ruby red with a light rim. Equally bright and very complex bouquet of wild berries, strawberries, dried fruits, tar and balsamic herbs. On the palate, a very attractive, supple texture, again a beautiful red berry fruit in the drink, plus traces of blackcurrant, blueberry and liquorice. In the long, squeaky clean finish, traces of well-integrated light wood and a very appealing silkiness. SUPERIORE.DE
"Medium to deep ruby red with orange highlights. Brooding but ripe on the nose. Lots of juicy cherry fruit and crisp tannins. A blockbuster, but a finely balanced one." Jancis Robinson
"The 2018 Brunello di Montalcino is rich and haunting dark, with masses of cherry and raspberry sauce giving way to sweet violet flowers. The palate is velvety, with balsamic spice and red and black fruits lifted by cool acidity. It leaves a hint of primary concentration balanced by a touch of sour citrus, and finishes with smooth tannins and a strong power. There's a lot going on here, and it has the ability to age over the medium term." Vinous
"Aromas of fresh raspberries, sour cherries, lemons, walnuts and vanilla beans. It is juicy and flavourful with a medium body and creamy tannins. The tangy fruit transitions into creamy chocolate. Wonderfully drinkable." James Suckling
"A juicy style for the vintage, with aromas of cherries, raspberries, flowers, graphite and spices. Balanced and lively, with bright acidity and refined tannins for support. Shows lovely length." Wine Spectator
"The 2018 Brunello di Montalcino shows dark fruit and oak spice and tends towards the more powerful and voluminous side of the Brunello spectrum. The wine is open-knit and approachable. The finish shows a softer side with polished tannins." Wine Advocate
"The nose begins with a shooting star of sweet candied cherry and vanilla before it burns up and leaves behind a dark, savory sky of coffee, old leather and burnt caramel. The sun rises on the palate, with strawberry and blood orange notes joining the resurgent cherry. Compressed tannins and vigorous acidity provide structure." Wine Enthusiast

Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2019
With the exception of 2016 and 2019, the last eight years in the region around Montalcino have been characterised by warm and dry conditions. For this reason, Il Poggione has started to prioritise irrigation for emergencies (which is becoming more and more of a necessity in the south-west of Montalcino) and is looking for a better balance in the higher vineyards. This is not the only reason why Il Poggione is one of the top producers every year, with an extremely fair value.
Oenologist Alessandro Bindocci compares the 2019 and 2016 vintages as follows "Both Brunellos are quite classic, but the 2019 has more energy and fruit than the 2016 at the same stage."
Opens as a medium-dark appearance with a pretty Sangiovese lustre and ruby red shimmer. In the glass, the 2019 shows a wildly romantic side and a dense fruit profile. The aromatic focus is on blackberries, dried cherries, tobacco and a hint of smoked tobacco or horse saddle. On the palate, a contrasting spectacle of dark red fruits, sweet spices and salty mineral notes; all supported by a silky texture and lively acidity. As it progresses, it has a beautiful, firm grip and a stable backbone, with youthful tension and fine-grained tannins, which will give it great ageing potential. Il Poggione is a safe bet every year, and not just for us, and the 2019 edition is once again one of the best representatives of this noble appellation. SUPERIORE.DE
"Notes of blackberries and herbs, also tobacco; pithy structure, robust tannins, combines character and good length." Vinum
"Dense bouquet with ripe red and dark fruits, blueberries, wild strawberries, cassis and redcurrants. Behind this, the oak barrel ageing is also evident with a fine animal note, cedar, tobacco, chocolate, dark spices and herbs. Fleshy, dense palate with a coarse-meshed tannin network, but of the best quality. Very persistent and full-bodied on the final." Weinwisser
"Dark, youthful ruby red colour. Very closed and brooding with just a hint of fragrant raspberry, tea leaves and oak. Generous and compact on the palate. A layer of soft cherry and raspberry fruit, lined with quite powerful tannins that need more time. Carries its 15% with ease. Closes on the finish and needs more time." Jancis Robinson
"Lots of dried fruit, such as figs and dried cherries, followed by tree bark, rosemary and a hint of sandalwood. Full-bodied and creamy on the palate with a solid tannin structure. Wonderful length. Dense and opulent." James Suckling
"The Il Poggione 2019 Brunello di Montalcino shows a developed bouquet with aromas of dried fruit, forest floor, crushed flowers and autumnal foliage. A second nose reveals dark liquorice, wet slate, cola and grilled rosemary. The tannins are powdery and dry." Wine Advocate
"It offers plenty of plum, cherry, iron, tobacco and undergrowth flavours supported by a plump texture that matches the dense structure, as well as a lively acidity that keeps everything in focus. Another year of ageing should allow the finish to expand and this wine to reach its full potential." Wine Spectator
"The 2019 vintage is very balanced, somewhere between 2016, 2013 and 2010. Sant'Angelo in Colle, which suffers in warmer vintages, has done very well and Il Poggione is a great example of the harmony of the area's wines in this vintage. At first sniff it is fruity, later becoming more restrained, with black cherry, violets, leather, graphite and the typical nutty finish. The chalky tannins are extracted but velvety, emphasised by an almost piquant acidity." Decanter
"The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino draws the taster close to the glass with its dark and earthy blend of crushed ash stones giving way to rosemary, cedar, exotic spices and a core of raspberry jam. Enveloping and serene, it flows across the palate like pure silk, steadily building tension as tart wild berry and orange notes give way to a sweet herbal push. The 2019 finishes with tremendous length and is classically structured as crisp tannins linger and purple flowers slowly fade over a tactile layer of minerality. Il Poggione has captured the vibrancy of the vintage, yet it is still a baby today." Vinous
"Fresh nose, pomegranate, notes of lemongrass and ginger with citrus notes. Salty tannins on the palate, reminiscence of pomegranate and notes of ginger." Luca Gardini

The 2019 Brunello vintage from Altesino stands proudly among its peers. The bouquet has a pronounced floral character with delightful notes of pressed rose petals and dried violets. The fruit tones are elegant and harmonious, ranging from light red cherries to redcurrants. Firm, well-structured on the palate, the multi-layered fruit is accentuated by a refined fennel and liquorice note. Long and stately in the final, great! SUPERIORE.DE
"Medium, ripe red; warm nose, deep ripe notes, inviting; powerful, coffee, cassis, matching tannin, length." Merum
"Already firm and compact on the nose with a fine, complex character, as is often the case on the dark red, black berry side (cassis, dark cherries), with earthy and ethereal notes reminiscent of mint. Very present and again grippy on the palate, the ripe fruit is clasped by fine tannins, the delicate acidity embraces the athletic body. This has power and fine tension. A very typical 2019." Weinwisser
"Bright, light ruby red colour. Very fragrant on the nose, of ripe currants, reminiscent of raspberries, orange juice and cold fruit tea. Shows earthy notes on the palate, ripe berry fruit and full-bodied tannins, with good pressure, warm and grippy with good length on the finish." Falstaff
"This red wine has a solid structure and shows macerated flavours of cherry, plum, earth and wild herbs, which are supported by a lively acidity. A hint of chocolate adorns the finish alongside dense tannins." Wine Spectator
"Altesino covers around 50 hectares in the northern and southern parts of Montalcino. The estate's Brunello is a blend of different vineyards and is one of the best wines in the appellation. While the bottling from Montosoli has a rather solemn tone, this 2019 is cheerful and bright. Strong redcurrants and cherries mingle with plums and aniseed. The lusciously fruity, plush palate is mouth-filling yet agile. Sandy tannins envelop and caress it, while the citrus-like acidity lightens the whole. It's already approachable and has enough depth, concentration and backbone for a solid decade of enjoyment." Decanter
"A medium-bodied red wine with beautiful plum and berry aromas and flavours. Fine tannins and a fresh finish. Very fine and concentrated. This is all about finesse and polish." James Suckling
"The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino has a dark ruby red colour in the glass and opens with a beguiling mix of dusty earth, crushed rock, spicy herbs and dried roses. It is racy and supple, with vibrant ripe wild berries underscored by orange and sage, all with a lively acidity. The grippy tannins take control on the finish, but hints of bitter liquorice and dark chocolate leave the mouth wanting more." Vinous
"The Altesino 2019 Brunello di Montalcino shows a rich and flavoursome side that this wine carries very well. There is a nice amount of dark fruit that blends into the velvety texture of the wine. Blackberry and plum envelop the palate, adding elegant, full-bodied volume and fine tannins." Wine Advocate

Brunello di Montalcino “Pelagrilli” DOCG 2017
Pelagrilli 2017 is an open, accessible Brunello. On the nose, inviting berry aromas, facets of spices, maquis and flowers. In the drink, aromas of dark cherry, plum, smoke and spices. With its juice, fullness and fine-grained tannins, it shows its considerable personality until the supple final. SUPERIORE.DE
"The nose pleases with nuances of red berries, enveloped by violet and tobacco notes; compact construction with well-integrated tannins, perfectly integrated acidity, excellent evolution, rich in finesse and with storage potential. Goes very well with game dishes." Vinum
"Shiny, intense ruby garnet. Intense, expressive nose of ripe raspberries, plums and liquorice. Gripping tannin on the palate, accentuated ripe fruit notes on the palate, seems quite brittle on the final, slightly alcoholic on the finish." Falstaff
"The Siro Pacenti 2017 Brunello di Montalcino Pelagrilli is a robust and powerful expression with dark fruit nuances that transition to a dense core and a tightly woven inner fabric with more enriched black fruit and spice. Pelagrilli has a beautifully soft and open-knit character, and the tannins are well managed to show no rough edges or bitterness. What stands out best in this wine is the sheer density. Built like a tank, it will embrace long cellar aging." Wine Advocate
"Beautiful aromas of cherries, plums and fresh flowers with some oranges follow through to a full body with round and chewy tannins that are polished and refined for the hot 2017 vintage. Flavorful and fresh finish. Remains in check and toned. Drink in 2023 and onwards." James Suckling
"Beautiful version 2017 also for Brunello from the youngest vineyards, from a sustainable viticulture. Nose that shows small red fruits, pomegranate above all, then fresh thyme and nice mentholated nuance in the closing. The mouthfeel is equally mentholated, with a crispy and taut mouthfeel." “Cielo d’Ulisse” Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2018
The vineyard on the western side of the Montalcino hills is so secluded that you can enjoy the starry sky to the full without being disturbed. It is therefore not surprising that this supple, very classic Brunello bears the name "Sky of Ulysses". As is well known, Odysseus had the ability to navigate the seas without a compass and by simply orientating himself by the stars.
Deep dark ruby with light-coloured inclusions. The bouquet is a potpourri of aromas that unfold almost endlessly, with floral notes of light roses and white flowers alongside black and red fruits. On the palate, power, flavour and a freshness that, together with the well-proportioned tannins, suggest a harmonious and exciting development! SUPERIORE.DE
"Powerful, rich ruby colour with a fine garnet sheen. Opens on the nose with intense, quite mature fruit notes of dried plums, preserved cherries, liquorice and some leather. Also reveals itself on the palate with clearly matured tones, grippy tannins, then clear malty components in the final, already appears very mature." Falstaff
"Deep, youthful ruby red colour. Deep raspberry fruit nose with mineral notes. Lots of concentrated, juicy fruit, yet complex, multi-layered and with gripping tannins. Has everything you need, yet retains an elegant weight on the palate. Impeccably balanced. Irresistible." Jancis Robinson
"The Brunello di Montalcino Cielo d'Ulisse 2018 smells of violets and roses as well as dried blueberries and a hint of smoke in the glass. It feels silky and cool, with a racy acidity that accompanies the tart wild berry fruit. Blue and purple flowers, liquorice and chalky tannins accompany the 2018, which finishes lightly structured and long. Podere Le Ripi has managed to maintain the balance and energy in this wine. The Cielo d'Ulisse comes from the vineyards of Podere Le Ripi in the south-west of Montalcino, but the vines are surrounded by woods that balance out the warmth of the location." Vinous
"The Podere le Ripi 2018 Brunello di Montalcino Cielo d'Ulisse shows a spicy character with cloves and white pepper. These notes are faint, but they help to support the dark layers of dried cherries and blackcurrants. There is a hint of sour fruit on the finish of this medium-bodied Brunello. The structure of the wine is lean and fine." Wine Advocate
"The nose begins savory and earthy before sweet cherries and bitter espresso start to sparkle. The palate is full of black cherries and figs, with a bolder coffee flavor reappearing on the finish. The tannins are chalky and dense, while marvelously intense acidity persists through the finish." Wine Enthusiast

Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2019
Traditionally vinified, its intense ruby red colour, the fruity aroma with spicy and balsamic notes and its gentle start on the palate, which builds furiously, are impressive. The high-class tannin structure rests between the soft components, so that this Brunello from the dream year 2019 simultaneously demonstrates elegance and strength without appearing too modern. SUPERIORE.DE
"Fragrant, very precisely framed bouquet with red berries, mineral notes and violets, hibiscus, with fine mineral hints behind it. Quite lean and powerful in the mouth, very fine style, coherent in itself." Weinwisser
"Clear, slightly warm, somewhat nutty and hinted at tobacco-like aroma of ripe red and black berries with bloody and cedary traces. Ripe, firm, juicy, still undeveloped fruit, relatively present, crumbly-sandy, ripe tannins, slightly smoky and nutty oak notes, persistent on the palate, some bite, certain depth, cooling mineral elements, dark spice, very good, firm, tart-juicy and spicy finish." Wein-Plus
"Bright ruby red with brightening edges. Opens with notes of fresh cherries, some rosehip and light tobacco. Fine-meshed, polished tannins in the attack and on the palate, still young overall, fine salinity on the final." Falstaff
"The 2019 is forward and rich in flavours. Sun-soaked oily herbs and grilled Mediterranean shrubs are reminiscent of late summer in Tuscany. Mint and rosemary are repeated on the full-bodied, powerful palate. The tannins are mostly ripe, but a slight astringency provides a pleasant aftertaste. More rustic than elegant, but it will certainly have its fans." Decanter
"Aromas of balsamic herbs and dark chocolate give way to dried black cherries and pine shavings as the 2019 Brunello di Montalcino draws the taster to the glass. This is a supple and racy wine with a cool acidity and dark red fruits that flow over a silky textural wave. The finish is savoury and long, but also remarkably fresh, with edgy tannins that linger as the notes of salted liquorice slowly fade. The wine's balance is stunning, but don't be fooled by the 2019's openness; this is a wine for the cellar." Vinous
"A firm and silky Brunello with berry, cherry, cedar and meat flavours. It's medium-bodied and fairly dense, but shows some polish. Better after 2026." James Suckling
"The Fanti 2019 Brunello di Montalcino offers dark fruit and an articulate bouquet with elements of ripeness and balsamic herbs, unfolding its aromas in hints of liquorice, dark plums, smoked tobacco and sweet floral earth. On the palate, Brunello di Montalcino reveals much of its intensity with an abundance of ripe fruit that gently fades in the mid-palate. The tannins are gently integrated." Wine Advocate
"This silky red wine, which evokes flavours of cherries, strawberries and hibiscus, is harmonious and elegant. Mineral and wild herbal elements add details that carry through to the long, energising aftertaste." Wine Spectator
"Red mulberries on the nose, hints of star anise, wild rosemary and chinotto. Salty tannins on the palate, hints of small fruits and spicy notes." Luca Gardini

Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2019
Brilliant, dark ruby colour. Deep bouquet of rich blackberry and cherry flavours with mentholated herbal notes that give it lift, while notes of cedar and clove develop in the glass. On the palate, the wine is a pure silk that slowly lays over the palate, with an admirable density and weight balanced by bright acidity and minerality. This still very young wine is full of potential with a core of dark primary fruit that already offers a good foretaste of the charm of later years. A finely woven tannin structure on the long final. Wonderful ageing potential. SUPERIORE.DE
"Very beautiful, floral bouquet with delicate candied, ripe cherries, lilacs and rose petals. Powerful, juicy in the mouth, spicy-floral frame with rather red berry freshness, beautiful spice and herbal notes, good tension with quite supple, fine-grained tannins." Weinwisser
"Bright ruby red with garnet reflections. Elegant bouquet of sweet cherries, undergrowth, fresh mushrooms, plus some tobacco and saddle leather. Incredibly soft on entry with young but fine tannins, precise fruit, long." Falstaff
"Medium to deep ruby red with orange-coloured reflections. Attractive, firm cherry fruit nose with balsamic, minty oak notes. Lots of supple, tangy cherry with grippy but polished tannins. A seductive whole that can be savoured now but also lasts a long time." Jancis Robinson
"Compact and exciting young red colour with lots of dark fruit and violets as well as subtle spicy and roasted undertones. Creamy and rich on the palate with balanced acidity. Persistent length with flavours of dried herbs on the finish. Needs more time to mellow." James Suckling
"The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino is wild, opening with a savoury burst of spiced orange and clove before settling on black cherry and ashen rock. It feels creamy and seductive, with a wave of rich red fruit flowing easily across the palate, guided by juicy acidity. Tension builds on the finish as salty minerals mingle with edgy tannins, leaving a pleasantly bitter sensation and leaving the mouth wanting more. Although some patience will be required, I expect the 2019 to exceed expectations after only a few years of cellaring." Vinous
"The La Gerla 2019 Brunello di Montalcino has spicy, dried fruit with blackcurrant, pine cones, juniper berries and a hint of medicinal herbs or camphor ash. The oak is clearly evident in the form of fireflies or crushed cloves. On the palate, this Brunello is rather streamlined, and although the tannins are still slightly chalky, they are now almost accessible." Wine Advocate
"One of the company's gems, a Brunello of rare reliability. On the nose, notes of red mulberry, then eucalyptus and cinnamon, with hints of gardenia. The sip is savoury, with a return of balsamic sensations and red mulberry. Closes with floral notes." Luca Gardini

Brunello di Montalcino “Ugolforte” DOCG 2019 (BIO)
In the highly harmonious 2019 vintage, Brunello di Montalcino Ugolforte walks a straight line between opulence and elegance. Full, inviting nose with notes of rosewood and ripe cherries, lots of blackberry. On the palate with a beautiful, juicy attack: wrapped in a supple texture, there is a beautifully fanned-out sequence of aromas of wild berries, sour cherries, spices, liquorice and a little balsamic herb. Finely woven tannins and a perfectly balanced, stabilising Sangiovese acidity flank the long finish to an elegant, warm finish. SUPERIORE.DE
"Mid to deep ruby. Subdued but complex cherry nose and with the merest hint of cigar box. Juicy, tangy cherry that at the same time is concentrated and with ripe, deep, chewy tannins. Great balance and length." Jancis Robinson
"There is deep black fruit and black plum on the San Giorgio 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Ugolforte. although it takes a little patience to get there. The wine is restrained or closed initially, and it's hard to draw anything out for the first 15 minutes or so after the bottle is opened. Once it gets going, you are treated to sweet cherry, redwood, almond biscotti and dried rose potpourri." Wine Advocate
"The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Ugolforte opens with a minty freshness as flint stone and dusty rose give way to crushed cherries. Silky and pliant, this possesses an elegance not often seen, with violet and lavender tones accentuating its polished red and blue fruits. This tapers off with sweet tannins balanced by an orange hint. A structured yet mouth-watering sensation lingers on. What a beauty this is." Vinous
"Cherry and berry aromas with hints of sandalwood follow through to a medium body with integrated tannins that are fine and focused. Silky texture. Delicious finish. Very elegant with nice structure." James Suckling
"Vibrant acidity and refined tannins seep into the fabric of this round red, which is laced with cherry, raspberry and floral aromas and flavors. Mineral and underbrush accents add depth as this plays out on the long, dusty finish." Wine Spectator

Brunello di Montalcino “Paesaggio Inatteso” DOCG 2015
The Paesaggio Inatteso selection comes from Camigliano's 3.5-hectare vineyard "La Magia", which has mineral and calcareous soils. The 2015 edition presents itself more robust and intense than the classic Annata of the house. Bright ruby red. In the nose cherry, raspberry, spice and tobacco aromas, on the palate taut, precise and full of personality. The tannins are soft and well integrated, making it an opulent, powerful and long-lasting pleasure even when young. SUPERIORE.DE
"Aromas of crisp wild berries and violets, underscored by balsamic notes; precise texture with cut and length. Classically noble Sangiovese." Vinum
"Elegant, brilliant ruby garnet. Very fresh and fruity nose, of juicy, freshly plucked cherries, some raspberry and pomegranate. Round and smooth in the base and flow, shows also in the mouth a lot of present berry fruit, polished tannin." Falstaff
"Good dark red. Perfumed red cherry, raspberry and mint on the nose, plus hints of potpourri. Clean flavors of red fruits and spices show a restrained sweetness and a creamy mouthfeel on the long back end. Offers greater delineation and increasing pliancy with air." Vinous
"Enticing flavors of black cherry, plum, iron, leather, earth and tobacco mark this red. Dense tannins and bright acidity lay down structural support. Tips toward the dry side in the balance despite the persistent finish." Wine Spectator
"The purity and focus to this young Brunello is certainly impressive with crushed berries and flowers, as well as burnt orange peel on the nose. Full body. Firm and silky tannins with an intense backbone and focus. A seriously structured and balanced red. Drink after 2022." James Suckling
"This wine sees fruit from a three-hectare site (at 300 meters above sea level) with loamy sand soils. This is a very special wine with a unique set of aromas. It shows pronounced Mediterranean accents of rosemary, lavender and dried basil leaf. The wine's fruit profile is also front and center with wild berry and dried cassis. The mouthfeel is silky, lean and topped off by well integrated tannins." Wine Advocate

Brunello di Montalcino “Pelagrilli” DOCG 2018
Pelagrilli 2018 offers a great package of intensity, freshness, firmness and complexity. It delivers generously on all fronts. The bouquet reveals wild cherry, rosehip, dried herbs and toasted almonds. The fruit here tastes less ripe compared to the wines from the southern parts of the appellation and one senses a subtle acidic vein on the finish. This very classic Brunello should age in the bottle for a few more years and gain volume. SUPERIORE.DE
"Sparkling ruby garnet with brightening rim. Very clear and intense nose, lots of blackberry, ripe dark cherry, dried tomato in the background. Shows nice, accessible cherry fruit on the palate, opens up in many layers with grippy tannin, balsamic notes and firm pressure on the final." Falstaff
"Wild blueberries, crushed violets, allspice, spiced orange peel and a hint of cocoa are found in the glass. The region's clay soils give the wine a velvety smooth and undeniably elegant feel with a dense textural wave of ripe, dark red fruits that coat the palate in concentration, complemented by sweet herbal notes within and a hint of lavender. Like the proverbial iron fist in a velvet glove, the 2018 reveals a massive wall of fine-grained tannins on the finish, leaving only nuances of sour citrus and currants. This untamed beast of a Brunello will need a long ageing to develop all its charms. It's worth noting that no Riserva PS is bottled in this vintage, so all the juice was used to top up the Pelagrilli and Rosso." Vinous
"A fruity version packed with cherry, raspberry, floral and stony mineral aromas and flavors. A vibrant and elegant red, with a firm line of tannins guarding the finish. Shows superb balance and future potential." Wine Spectator
"The Siro Pacenti 2018 Brunello di Montalcino Pelagrilli presents in an elegantly designed bottle with plenty of dark fruit and blackberry, the quality of the fruit is powerful, fresh and still very much alive. The house style relies on concentration and oak spice, but the attention to detail in the winemaking is impeccable." Wine Advocate
"Complex and layered with truffles, white pepper, cardamom, dried cherries, blueberries, bay leaves, fresh mushrooms and potpourri. Sophisticated and weightless, with medium to full body and very finely woven tannins that have more texture. Everything so beautifully integrated. Drinkable from 2024." James Suckling
"North-eastern territory, from a company that has made history. A concrete project of sustainability as substantial as this Brunello, which comes from the youngest vineyards. On the nose, Marasca cherries, nuances of eucalyptus and white pepper. The drinkability is dense, crisp, balsamic with a fruity-spicy finish." Luca Gardini

The famous little town of Montalcino, with its impressive Fortezza (fortress), is enthroned on the highest hill of the area and is inseparably linked to the Brunello red wine, thanks to which it is probably also responsible for today's prosperity. Brunello di Montalcino is one of the most legendary success stories in Italian viticulture. If not worldwide.
Located in the south of Tuscany near Siena, all the advantages that Tuscany has to offer are combined: Seclusion, magnificent views, the famous cypress avenues, good food, holiday apartments in wineries and renovated ancient stone houses, as well as one of the most famous wines in the world, the Brunello di Montalcino. As old as the Etruscans may be and as competitive as Montalcino has been for centuries, Brunello itself is actually a fairly recent success story. Until around 1980, there was very little viticulture in the region, but rather arable land, white grapes like the Moscadello di Montalcino, which has almost disappeared today, and impenetrable undergrowth.
Only 63,583 bottles of Brunello di Montalcino were produced in 1980.
Today there are about 10 million bottles a year. At that time, 700 hectares of agricultural land were converted into 24,000 hectares, 3,500 of which are reserved for viticulture. The number of producers multiplied, among them many investors, also from abroad, who for one hectare, which allows Brunello cultivation, already once more than half a million euros.
In 1966 Brunello di Montalcino became the DOC, in 1980 the first DOCG in Italy, both at the same time as the "little brother" Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, who for decades had been the much more famous wine. It was not until the mid-1980s that the real boom began. Thanks to a very early foundation of a Consortium (1967), which already then laid down very strict guidelines for production and quality control, as well as the early DOCG designation in 1980, the quality could be maintained despite the enormous expansion. Still today, probably as the only Consorzium of wine producers in Italy, all of the more than 200 producers are members. This made a unique branding and awareness possible.
Not everything is Brunello.
Only 2,100 hectares are dedicated to Brunello, another 510 hectares are vineyards for Rosso di Montalcino and almost 1,000 hectares are planted with other grape varieties, half of which are Sant'Antimo DOC, named after the abbey that has been in existence since the first millennium AD. Chr. here. In Montalcino, it is said, the climate is more even, the summers are warmer and drier, and Monte Amiata, at an altitude of 1,700 metres, is able to withstand adversities such as summer thunderstorms and hail. The soils are loamy to sandy, but often calcareous and interspersed with many stones. This is why concentrated, long-lasting wines can develop here.
It began with Biondi-Santi. Almost.
Although there are records from the 14th century in which Brunello was mentioned, it was not until the middle of the 19th century that Clemente Santi (1795-1865) selected the first, rather compact Sangiovese clones in his vineyard Il Greppo, which were later to become Brunello. His grandson Ferruccio (1848-1916), son of Caterina Santi and Jacopo Biondi, succeeded in planting the high-quality selection further and presented the first red wine called Brunello in 1888, after several years of storage in large oak barrels. Since this wine was produced only four times until the end of the Second World War - in 1888, 1891, 1925 and 1945 - it achieved a kind of cult status and almost astronomical prices. The fact is that these Sangiovese clones are still used in Montalcino today.
Brunello di Montalcino is subject to strict production guidelines, which are monitored by the "Consorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino". Each bottle carries a band with a number that allows the wine to be traced back to the producer. The yield is regulated, as are the grape varieties that can be used for Brunello, Rosso, Sant'Antimo and Moscadello di Montalcino.
For Brunello di Montalcino this is 100% Sangiovese. Even today, the majority of the clones can be traced back to the selection of Biondi-Santi. In recent decades, clone selection has also been carried out at Castello Banfi under scientific direction. The Sangiovese grape is also called Brunello grape. Experts call it Sangiovese Grosso because it is a clone with slightly larger berries than, for example, in Chianti.
In Rosso di Montalcino 100% Sangiovese is also mandatory, but the yield may be slightly higher and the wine may be marketed earlier. Rosso Sant'Antimo also allows other grape varieties, but the main variety must always dominate at least 70%. Other red wines, mostly cuvées, are labelled as Rosso Toscana IGT.
Incredible variety and style.
As in almost all famous wine regions, Montalcino also discusses stylistics - the "true" Brunello. Traditionalists, who prefer a slightly slimmer, more acidic style and who mainly use large (approx. 3,500-5,000 l) barrels of Slavonian oak, are opposed to the "modernists", who work with barriques (225 l) and tonneaux (500 l) from France. As always, it is a matter of taste. But when a Casanova di Neri receives 100 points at the Winespectator, many a "traditionalist" also thinks about it.
