Prosecco is not just Prosecco. Millions of Liters of often banal sparkling wine are produced under this protected name every year, which in recent years has prompted some top winemakers from the core zone around Conegliano Valdobbiadene to radically abandon this generic designation in the names of their products. As a result, the DOCG products from this small core region are increasingly being labelled with the designation of origin Conegliano and/or Valdobbiadene.
In July 2019, the small, noble region in north-east Italy received a special honour: the World Heritage Committee listed the Prosecco hills between Conegliano and Valdobbiadene as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The challenging, rugged terrain has been cultivated and created by farmers for centuries and, according to the UNESCO Commission, bears witness to the close interaction between man and nature.
And as a further acknowledgement of the outstanding efforts and achievements of the winegrowers, the addition "Rive" – the colloquial description for the steep vineyards - was introduced after the DOCG status. These represent the uniqueness of a total of 43 smaller sub-zones within the Conegliano-Valdobbiadene area. The different characteristics and characteristics of the vineyards and microclimates from place to place become clear here in all their diversity and reveal the great potential of the sparkling wine.
