Even if you consider yourself a Josko Gravner disciple, there is a good chance that you have neither tasted nor seen his epic red wine. Rujno is Josko Gravner's rarest and most age-worthy red wine: unlike pure Rosso, Rujno ages twice as long and is only produced in exceptional vintages in vanishingly small quantities. It comes from a single old vineyard on the edge of Slovenia and consists mostly of Merlot with a dash of Cabernet, aged for over 84 months in barrel and another 84 months in bottle before leaving the cellar. In total, more than 15 years passed before it was brought to market.

What makes it special is that the destemmed grapes (95% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon) ferment for six months on their skins in conical Slavonian oak tanks, after which the wine rests for seven years in massive Slavonian oak barrels. And when it was bottled afterwards, the ageing process was only half complete, as Gravner let it mature for another seven years before finally releasing it for sale.

And so this wine also needs at least 60 minutes in the glass to blossom and unfold its myriad subtleties. And only after two to three hours does it reveal aromas of black cherry, dried plum and redcurrant, followed by liquorice and crushed black rock. As it progresses, traces of lead, fresh tobacco, smoke, charred bay leaf, old leather and garrigue. Although a relatively robust and wildly rustic red, this noble Bordeaux blend, combined with 16 years of ageing, makes for a subtle and medium-bodied palate full of remarkably supple and silky layers. The dark berry fruit shines through at all times, driven by a powerful core of crushed minerals, anise and espresso.

Giacomo Neri's Pietradonice is Cabernet Sauvignon at the highest level and has become a legend, as there is hardly a wine in Montalcino that can even come close to it. Monumental and very concentrated, with hints of sour cherries and a fine cedar and liquorice note. The exciting thing: Pietradonice is clearly recognisable as a Montalcino growth and yet, with its herbaceous spiciness, it is just as typical of Neri as it is of the grape variety and thus again as if from another larger world. Barolo Cerequio comes from vines over 35 years old and is characterised by exuberant aromas and bright, red-coloured fruit. And as it is a new addition to the portfolio, the Vietti team is still familiarising itself with the material. The bouquet of the Barolo Cerequio 2019, for example, reveals a fresh minty note. "This minty note was a mystery to us," says Luca Currado. "But then we realised that it was part of the Cerequio." On the palate, the wine has a firm grip, which expands and has a soft texture, but ultimately remains quite structured. Luca Currado tells me that "Cerequio is the brother and Brunate is the sister" of the La Morra Grand Cru vineyards. Angelo's grandfather spoke of a disgrace when Angelo planted a vineyard with Cabernet Sauvignon. This word (Darmagi in Italian) ultimately gave the single-varietal Cabernet its name. The extraordinary result is anything but a disgrace: black fruits, espresso, grilled herbs and cassis in a rich and dense bouquet. Elegance and harmony on the palate, flavours of leather and a certain earthiness increase the complexity. The name says it all. This wine is a reminiscence of a bygone era. It is a Gewürztraminer vinified in the traditional style with clearly perceptible residual sugar. The grapes come from two of the oldest Gewürztraminer vineyards near the Nußbaumerhof in Tramin from soils with calcareous gravel and porphyry rock.

In order to develop its character in the best possible way, Epokale matures for seven years in the darkness of the Ridnaun tunnel on the Schneeberg at an altitude of over 2,000 metres. Here, four kilometres deep inside the mountain, it retains its freshness and gains elegance thanks to an environment in which constant humidity and a cool temperature of 11 degrees prevail all year round.

Intense golden yellow colour. Impressive bouquet of rose petals, some lavender and ripe, exotic fruit. Spicy notes of dried herbs, sage, ginger, saffron and cinnamon. A wine with pronounced flavours, infinite depth and at the same time fine spicy juiciness and salty minerality. "Epokale is the top bottling of Gewürztraminer from Tramin, reminiscent of the traditional style of the region, with plenty of residual sugar. Nevertheless, it is incredibly balanced and fresh. Produced for the first time in 2009, Epokale is made from grapes grown on dolomitic limestone soils with a high clay content. This helps to cool the vines and ensures maximum acidity, which balances out the high sugar content of the grapes. The wine is vinified in stainless steel before being taken to an old silver mine at 2,000 metres above sea level, 4 km inside the mountain, where there is a constant temperature of 11°C with high humidity. Here the wine rests for seven years. This 2016, the most recent release, is rich, round, viscous and spicy, with flavours of stone fruit, lime and lychee as well as grilled pineapple, rosewater, apricot, white peach and floral aromas. Rocche di Castiglione is prized for its pure white, chalky soils, which produce wines of exceptional finesse and a wide range of flavours. For lovers of timeless Nebbiolo, it is a real hit. The vines are located not far from the winery, which blends into the stone walls and urban fabric of the village of Castiglione Falletto. The vineyard is about one hectare in size. Rocche di Castiglione is a curiously shaped and elongated MGA with a unique south-east exposure along a steep ravine, with Bussia to the west and Perno to the east. This site is characterised by freshness, extreme precision, straightforwardness, structure and balanced freshness. Barolo Cerequio comes from vines that are over 35 years old. The vineyards were acquired by Michele Chiarlo in the 2010s through fortunate circumstances. Opens with aromas of freshly halved cherries, which are joined by a mixture of cloves, allspice and vanilla, while fresh roses are almost close at hand. On the palate, concentrated and lush plums and mixed berries, while black tea, liquorice and subtle earthy flavours gradually emerge. In the mid-palate, the tannins are still clearly noticeable, but with a little time all parts will be in balance. Giacomo Neri's Pietradonice is Cabernet Sauvignon at the highest level and is now a legend, as there is hardly a wine in Montalcino that can even come close to equalling it. Monumental and very concentrated, with hints of sour cherries and a fine cedar wood and liquorice note. The exciting thing: Pietradonice is clearly recognisable as a Montalcino wine and yet, with its herbal and spicy character, it is as typical of Neri as it is of the grape variety and therefore seems to come from another larger world. The vineyards of the Löwengang estate in Margreid have been owned by the Lageder family since 1934. Here, on the rubble cone of ancient dolomite rock below steep cliffs, grape varieties such as Carménère and Cabernet find ideal conditions in the mild climate of the valley.

Löwengang emphasises the unique DNA of the grapes from which this wine is made. Parts of the vineyard are around 145 years old and the vines are among the oldest vineyards in South Tyrol. Count Melchiori, the former owner, planted the plots in Margreid with Cabernet around 1875. At least that's what he thought - because a large proportion of the vines planted at that time were actually Carménère vines. Through intensive study of the vineyard and extensive genetic analyses, the Alois Lageder winery discovered that the vineyard was in fact a mixed set of Carménère, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. In order to emphasise the special origin of the grapes, the wine will be offered as the "Löwengang Historischer gemischter Satz" from the 2018 vintage onwards.

Mazzei's top wine Siepi is not only an outstanding Tuscan wine every year, but also a 6-hectare vineyard in the middle of dense oak forests with an ideal altitude and a unique climate. The sunshine is optimal throughout the day and a constant breeze from the west prevents excessive heat and creates a mild, Mediterranean climate. The oak forests also provide an ideal protective barrier against extreme weather conditions. Rocky soils of marl, limestone and clay from the Pliocene period ensure a special balance of elements in this geological complex.

Siepi's greatest strength every year is its pronounced sense of integration and harmony, and this excellent 2021 vintage is no exception. The bouquet is fresh and lively with lots of wild cherry, spices, wild rose, lilac and lavender. On the palate, it delights with soft fruit and delicate spice and shows an increasingly fluid personality in the glass, gradually revealing a beautiful sequence of background flavours.
