The wine-growing region of Sicily is characterised by boundless expanses and contrasts such as the damp, foggy coolness of Erice and the hellish heat of Randazzo at the foot of Mount Etna.
Which brings us to today's topic: The Etna region has probably held the most exciting position within Sicily for some years now. The wines are often less opulent, have a very special texture, acidity and tannin play an important role. The white, rosé and red wines are more Burgundian and cool in style, rich in finesse and elegant.
The vines are often still "ungrafted", i.e. they are over 100 years old and have survived the phylloxera plague of that time. In addition, the small plots, known here as contrade, lie at up to 1,100 metres above sea level and the often drastic temperature differences between day and night ensure optimal freshness of the grapes. The volcanic terroir gives the wines a certain smokiness and minerality, delicate tannins and often a subtle salt vein make the wines, some of which are produced in very small quantities, delicious and very distinctive.
