In the autumn of 2024, the tasting team from the gourmet magazine FALSTAFF turned its attention to the vintages currently available on the west coast of Tuscany:
"Bolgheri and the surrounding areas on the coast of Tuscany are among the most outstanding wine-growing regions in Italy. Thanks to the high intensity of light and the mild climate, wines with intense fruit and polished tannins are produced here. The coast of Tuscany measures a good 250 kilometres in length and stretches from Massa Carrara in the north to Monte Argentario in the south. Alongside the central hills inland on the Florence-Siena axis, this is the second major centre of viticulture in Tuscany.
Many of the high-quality and correspondingly expensive prestige cuvées thrive here. Some therefore also call it the Gold Coast. The winemaking tradition here is young. The first known wines were not produced to any significant extent until the 1980s. The real boom then began in the 1990s. Cabernet and co. were favoured here right from the start. This applies in particular to the central areas of Bolgheri, Bibbona and Suvereto. In the peripheral areas, in the north around Pisa and Lucca and in the south around Grosseto, a lot of Sangiovese (Morellino) is still cultivated.
While the 2020 vintage was good on the coast, but clearly lacked any real peaks, 2021 can shine again. Spring and summer were warm and dry. The beginning of August was also hot, but without reaching truly scorching temperatures. The harvest generally began in early September with the Merlot grapes. A refreshing downpour in the middle of the month also allowed Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc to ripen perfectly. The wines therefore show good ripeness with the typical Mediterranean flavour, but also have plenty of juicy fruit and very good drinkability. After 2016 and 2019, another great vintage on the coast!" Falstaff
