“Pietracalda” Fiano di Avellino Riserva DOCG 2022
After a year of bottle ageing in the cellar, Feudi's famous Fiano "Pietracalda" is labelled Riserva.
A particularly high-quality Fiano di Avellino from Campania with a bouquet of light-coloured stone fruit, nuts and honey. On the palate, its fruity character, aromatic herbal notes and clean structure and minerality make it extremely stimulating. SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2022 Fiano di Avellino Pietracalda wafts up with a delicate blend of white flowers, young peach and crushed stone. It flows across the palate with silken textures offset by tactile mineral tones as a core of ripe pit fruits and inner florals amass toward the close. A youthful tension lingers as the Pietracalda finishes classically dry and lightly structured. Today, the 2022 is coy, yet it possesses the balance for medium-term cellaring." Vinous
"That's good. Taut and fresh. It relies on a chewy lattice of salted lemon pith, as well as a distinct acidity. Taut and medium-bodied, with dabs of pistachio, fennel, tonic and jasmine. Long and complex." James Suckling
"The Fiano di Avellino Pietracalda 2022 is another very approachable and drinkable white wine from Feudi di San Gregorio. It is fresh and lively, both on the nose and in the mouth, with lots of flavours of white melon, pear, almond and gravel." Wine Advocate

Fiano di Avellino DOCG 2022
Opulent, savoury fruit, plus sage, ginger and thyme. Very soft and rich on the palate, fresh and agile as it progresses until it finally reaches its persistent and mineral final. A terroir wine full of character and complexity. SUPERIORE.DE
"The Colli di Lapio 2022 Fiano di Avellino shows good freshness and fruit quality in a challenging and very hot vintage and is beautiful on both the nose and the palate. It opens with creamy citrus, golden apple and yellow papaya flavours. Mineral tones are gently woven in. The secret of this wine lies in the vineyard's high altitude, with vines planted at a cool 530 metres above sea level on volcanic soils." Wine Advocate
"A fine expression from a warmer year. Peach, raw almond, apricot kernel and a noble quinine bitterness embrace an inherent ripeness. An engaging column of saltiness and a stream of gentle, maritime freshness. Perfect balance, the result. In such vintages, there is always a tendency towards excess. The winners are those who avoid this. Here is an example." James Suckling
"Bright and juicy, with pineapple, peach, blood orange sorbet, pink grapefruit granita, anise hyssop and honeysuckle flavors. Silky on the palate and well-knit, sculpted by lively acidity and a nice push of minerality that shines on the finish." Wine Spectator
"Traces of camomile complement sweet flowers and crushed yellow apples when the Fiano di Avellino 2022 opens in the glass. It is tangy and fresh, with a slightly effervescent feel. Salty mineral tones provide an echo of excitement. Young peach and sage notes linger as the 2022 finishes crisp." Vinous

Radici Fiano di Avellino DOCG 2023
Mastroberardino is particularly focussed on the old Fiano grape variety. It was already cultivated by the Romans, who called it Vitis apiana because of its special attraction to bees (apis). It produces a straw-coloured, wonderfully aromatic wine with a spicy honey and nutty bouquet. The characteristic and fresh flavour is very harmonious. SUPERIORE.DE
"Lemons, white nectarines, dried flowers and a hint of fresh nuts. It shows density and creaminess, yet is fresh and tangy, with juicy acidity framing it. Medium-bodied, firm and concentrated. Spicy and savoury on the finish." James Suckling

“Kratos” Fiano Cilento DOC 2023 (BIO)
Luigi Maffini's Kràtos is an organic wine grown in the foothills of the ancient ruins of Paestum. It spends only a short time in steel tanks and is smoky but also fruit-driven, with musky dried apricots, lime zest, crushed rocks and sea spray forming its captivating bouquet. Energetic on the palate, soft in texture and packed with zesty citrus and mineral notes balanced by a core of vibrant, ripe yellow apples. Finishes fresh and bold with notes of lemon oil and peach. For an "entry-level" Fiano, this is great cinema! SUPERIORE.DE

“Core” Bianco Campania IGT 2022
Wonderful cuvée of Greco and Fiano. An opulent potpourri of passion fruit, peach and honeydew melon on the nose. Not too heavy on the palate, but rather prancing and elegant with a wonderfully fresh structure. Beautiful balance, complex and full-bodied finish. SUPERIORE.DE
"Here's a fun and versatile non-carbonated white wine to bring chilled to an al fresco lunch. A blend of equal parts Fiano and Greco, the Montevetrano 2022 Core Bianco has a lean approach with enough texture to support fragrant apples, honey and white currants. The wine's flavour palette is very nice, and the best part is the salty or mineral end note that adds a spark of energy." Wine Advocate
"A beautiful blend of Fiano and Greco, offering rich flavours of ripe fruit salad as well as notes of pressed flowers and minerals. Medium-bodied with an intense palate, including a phenolic note that gives it a structured feel." James Suckling
"The 2022 Bianco Core wafts up from the glass with a rich blend of peach preserves and confectionary spice, complicated by a hint of candied lime. This is soothingly round with a core of saline minerality to balance, as a core of zesty acidity enlivens tart orchard fruits. The 2022 tapers off with a tart lemon-pith concentration yet is also remarkably fresh, leaving nuances of mint to fade slowly." Vinous

Fiano Campania IGT 2021
This Pietracupa wine perfectly combines the aromatic grace of Fiano di Avellino with the mineral strength of the Montefredane soil. Citrus notes on the nose, a variety of fruit flavours on the palate, rocky minerality, complexity and an excellent structure beguile the senses. SUPERIORE.DE
"The Pietracupa 2021 Fiano is a linear and crisp white wine that opens to a flinty mineral tone that dovetails into unripe peach, white flower and pulpy grapefruit. The whole presentation is smooth and very true to this fantastic white grape from southern Italy. The wine ends with notes of freshness and saltiness, and it's all beautifully balanced." Wine Advocate
"Colline di Montefredano, province of Avellino, a commendable project of denial of the territory from which this Fiano comes, produced exclusively in steel. On the nose, marjoram and white peach, then wisteria and lime, salty, crisp, slightly almondy on the palate." Luca Gardini

“More Maiorum” Fiano di Avellino DOCG 2017
A hearty, spicy Fiano di Avellino that impresses with its fruitiness and aromas of sausage, bacon and smoke. Complex on the palate of tropical fruits, candy and minerals, full-bodied long. SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2017 Bianco More Maiorum is very tasty in the glass, combining musk, dried apricots, yellow flowers, ginger and crushed rock. The palate is almost salty, showing a crisp purity of tart fruit and mineral tones, with an almost crisp feel towards the finish. The finish is marked by bitter almonds and lemon peel and ends with admirable length, but dry and grippy." Vinous
"This wine starts with a lovely lemon, cedar peel and wild onion character on the nose, mixed with a touch of oak. The palate is medium to full-bodied with bright citrus fruit that lingers until the end. It leaves a long aftertaste of lemon peel, dry minerals and caramel." James Suckling
"Here is a beautifully matured blend of equal parts Fiano and Greco. The 2017 Irpinia Bianco More Maiorum from the historic Mastroberardino estate shows a rich, mid-weight style with layers of beeswax, stone fruit, thick-skinned cedro lemon and underripe apricot. A nice hint of petrol and gravel adds to the wine's complexity and highlights the smooth evolution of this impressive five-year-old white." Wine Advocate

“Pietraincatenata” Fiano Cilento DOC 2022 (BIO)
Fiano Pietraincatenata is the winery's flagship white wine and takes the grape variety to a whole new level. The bouquet is a fascinating blend of grapefruit, lime zest and peach with a hint of sweet smoke as it warms up in the glass. Silky yet savoury to the core on the palate. A cornucopia of citrus fruits and minerals completes the green apple fruit. Tense and invigorating as it progresses and finishes, but still well suited to further and exciting bottle ageing. SUPERIORE.DE
"Ripe peaches and minty herbs come together with dusty dried flowers and white smoke as the 2022 Pietraincatenata slowly blossoms in the glass. This is pure elegance on the palate, mixing ripe orchard fruits and green melon with saline minerals and candied citrus atop a stream of vibrant acidity. The 2022 tapers off with incredible length and youthful tension, yet it keeps the mouth watering for more. A salty flourish and hints of sour lime slowly taper off." Vinous

“Stilèma” Fiano di Avellino Riserva DOCG 2019
"The Stilèma project was created as a testament to Antonio Mastroberardino's love for his land, his vines and his wines, and their original character." Piero Mastroberardino
The project aims to highlight the link between the vines, the wines and their territorial origins. The Mastroberardino family wants to recreate the style of winemaking of the indigenous grape varieties of Irpinia (Greco, Fiano and Aglianico) that took place between the late 1950s and early 1970s for the Taurasi and between 1970 and 1980 for the two white wines from Irpinia. It is the unmistakable style (the stilèma) of a family that has interpreted the natural heritage of its territory over generations and that today impressively emphasises the genuine character of the terroir, which by no means can be expressed through high concentration and intensity alone.
Pale straw yellow in colour with light green reflections. The 24 months of ageing on the lees of this exceptional Fiano creates a fascinating balance and complexity in the aroma profile with classic hints of flint, fine saltiness, the scent of fresh almonds, cedar wood and wild herbs. The flavour is lively with a pronounced mineral note, accompanied by an inspiring freshness that gives it great drinking flow and finesse. The precise and very long finish is also extremely convincing. SUPERIORE.DE
"Proof of the grape variety's ageing potential: Fresh hay and apple notes, including mint, are captivating on the nose; in the mouth, the wine is acidic and fresh with a fine salty minerality and a precise evolution towards citrus and apple notes." Vinum
"This slight hint of initial reduction fades to reveal soft citrus, exotic fruit, white peach and pear. The wine's flinty minerality is well defined. The fruit comes from four vineyards and the wine is mostly aged in stainless steel." Wine Advocate
"The 2019 Fiano di Avellino Riserva Stilema is aromatically intense, with a burst of ground ginger, cumin, incense and crushed green apples. It's a seductress, with a sweet burst of ripe fruit on the attack that is quickly contrasted by lemon zest and vibrant acidity. As well as being incredibly fresh, the 2019 is also incredibly long, finishing with a sense of liquid stone and a pleasant bitter note that calls me back to the glass for more." Vinous
"A fresh Fiano with aromas of honeysuckle, flint, oyster shells and green pear, which fade into a medium body, a creamy texture and a fruity finish. Slightly salty on the finish." James Suckling
"A masterful, intense and complex pure Fiano. Beautiful profile on the nose, lychee, a hint of pink grapefruit and pineapple, with a finish of herbs, thyme and a hint of jasmine. Dense, iodised mouthfeel, lovely depth, with a return of exotic fruit." Luca Gardini
"The nose is sweet yet structured, thoughtful and almost wistful, with notes of vanilla, pear, yellow apple, lemon, dried pineapple and almond paste. On the elegant, equally compelling palate, a more intense lemon element swirls around fresher pineapple notes and emerging melon flavours before a toasted almond finish follows. The bright acidity adds a subtle sizzle to the overall silky mouthfeel." Wine Enthusiast

“Exultet” Fiano di Avellino DOCG 2023
Bright yellow with greenish reflections. Fascinatingly fresh bouquet of white smoke, minerals and peach with a hint of lime. The palate reveals the true class and intensity of this Fiano: unrivalled by many of its peers, a silky philharmonic concert of green apple, lime, yellow flowers and exotic fruits opens up here. The fresh acidity, mineral notes and a purity that effortlessly elevates the wine to an exceptional position that is very difficult to find in southern Italy. An almost masterful Fiano that is hard to beat in terms of naturalness, balance and class. SUPERIORE.DE
"Sparkling, intense straw yellow with greenish reflections. Fragrant, inviting bouquet of lemon zest, pineapple, elderflower and a hint of marjoram. Silky and juicy on the palate, with refreshing acidity, salty and mineral flavours through to the finish." Falstaff
"The Exultet 2023 is stunning, flavoursome and remarkably pure. An array of Asian pears, ground ginger, dusty dried flowers and wet stone make up its inviting bouquet. It has a soft texture with a balancing hint of minerals and spice. Crisp fruit flavours unfold on the palate. The finish is long and exciting, while nuances of young peach and minty herbs gradually fade away. The 2023 is still a baby today, but it is positioned for a long and beautiful maturation." Vinous

“Bocca di Lupo” Fiano Puglia IGT 2021 (BIO)
Light yellow in colour with greenish reflections. On the nose, it captivates with aromas of white peaches, broom blossom and orange blossom; floral and persistent mineral notes are accompanied by sweet hints of hazelnuts and vanilla. On the palate, it is opulent and refined, yet fresh, mineral and of marvellous depth and complexity. One of the great white wines of southern Italy that will continue to develop brilliantly. SUPERIORE.DE
"Aromas of glazed apples, lemon pith, walnuts and light spices. Medium- to full-bodied with vivid acidity and a fresh, fruity character. Creamy and a little nutty at the end." James Suckling

“Piante a Lapio” Fiano Campania IGT 2013 · in gift box
Piante a Lapio is a rich and complex white wine produced in small quantities (about 3,000 bottles per vintage) from the grapes of a single vineyard parcel of just under one hectare in the municipality of Boschi in Lapio (AV). It consists of 35-40 year old vines planted on stratified and complex calcareous soils with basaltic subsoil at an altitude of about 550 metres. The vineyard is protected at the back by a namesake forest, which contributes to the vineyard's special microclimatic conditions. Here, in the heart of Irpinia, white wines are produced with great freshness and good acidity levels, which, vinified with the necessary care, can age for over 20 years.
Deep, bright straw yellow. Rich and complex on the nose, interwoven with notes of spices, herbs, hazelnuts, citrus fruits, honey and salt. In the mouth it has a clear structure, complex, intense, refined and with great personality. Piante a Lapio is a full-bodied, long-lasting wine whose future development is already undoubtedly visible today (after sufficient aeration). SUPERIORE.DE
"Considering the ten years that the 2013 Piante a Lapio has rested in the winery before release, the vibrant yellow-gold color alone is stunning. Its aromatics impress even more, blending roasted almond and hazelnut with honeyed florals and crushed yellow apple. It smooths over the palate, weighty yet lifted and distinctly savory, with a slight tropical citrus profile complicated by depths of saline minerals and hints of rum raisin, yet not sweet by any scope of the imagination. The 2013 tapers off with tension, and young peach and dried apricot nuances stick around. The Piante a Lapio is a serious meditation wine, produced from 80-to-100-year-old Fiano vines and matured in a mix of chestnut and acacia casks for five years. It’s a stunning wine for the more adventurous palate." Vinous

“More Maiorum” Fiano di Avellino DOCG 2017 · 6 bottles in OWC
A hearty, spicy Fiano di Avellino that impresses with its fruitiness and aromas of sausage, bacon and smoke. Complex on the palate of tropical fruits, candy and minerals, full-bodied long. SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2017 Bianco More Maiorum is savory in the glass, blending musky dried apricot with yellow flowers, ginger and crushed rocks. It’s nearly salty on the palate, displaying a crisp purity of tart orchard fruits and mineral tones that add an almost-crunchy sensation toward the close. This finishes with bitter almond and lemon zest, tapering off with admirable length yet dry and grippy." Vinous

“Stilèma” Fiano di Avellino Riserva DOCG 2019 · 6 bottles in OWC
"The Stilèma project was created as a testimony to Antonio Mastroberardino's love for his land, his vines and his wines, and their original character." Piero Mastroberardino
"Proof of the grape variety's ageing potential: On the nose, fresh hay and apple notes, including mint, are captivating; in the mouth, the wine is acidic and fresh with a fine salty minerality and a precise evolution towards citrus and apple notes." Vinum

Fiano is one of the oldest autochthonous white grape varieties in Italy. It is mainly found in the southern Italian region of Campania. Probably cultivated by the Romans, it was widespread and very popular from the Middle Ages to the end of the 19th century. After the phylloxera disaster, international varieties such as Chardonnay or the easily cultivated Trebbiano varieties were preferred in many areas. Autochthonous grape varieties largely died out. So did the Fiano.
In the 1970s a return to the past began and it is thanks to Antonio Mastroberardino that the variety was saved. The Mastroberardino winery invested a lot in research. In cooperation with universities and grape nurseries, other old grape varieties such as Greco di Tufo, Falanghina, Piedirosso, Aglianico or Coda di Volpe have been successfully recultivated over the years. In 1990, there were no more than 500 hectares of Fiano in the whole of Italy, now there are more than three times as many, with a strong upward trend, very pleasing.
The relatively late ripening Fiano grape produces aromatic, spicy white wines with a peach and grape aroma reminiscent of Muscat, often with a delicate honey and nut bouquet. When properly matured, they have a long shelf life. If you happen to have read in Wikipedia that Fiano should be drunk young, please forget that. Mastroberardinos Fianos are still in the barrel for the drinking window indicated there. On the contrary, Fiano from the good growing regions Cilento, Sannio or Avellino only tastes really good after two or three years of bottle ripening in the cellar and remains a fine pleasure and a wonderful universal food companion for a few more years.
Wine journalist Steffen Maus describes Fiano this way: "Aromas of lime blossom, dried fruit, hazelnut, almond and wild fennel are just some of the complex aromas, always accompanied by a wonderful minerality and juiciness on the palate, which invites you to continue drinking. Wonderfully independent and not to be compared with other Italian or French grape varieties."
The most famous growing areas are the DOC Sannio, DOC Cilento and the region around Avellino, which has been upgraded to DOCG since 2003. The Fiano di Avellino is probably the best known. Its vineyards, situated in the heart of Irpinia, reach up to 700 m above sea level, are always well ventilated and particularly fine fruity due to clear temperature differences between day and night.
After new plantations in the last century, Fiano can also be found outside Campania on a small scale in Basilicata, Marche and Sicily, where Planeta has proven what impressive wines can be produced from Fiano. About a handful of producers in Australia are also involved with this variety. SUPERIORE.DE
