Since Guidalberto has been vinified from its own grapes, most of which also grow in the Sassicaia DOC monopoly position, San Guido's "second wine" has grown beyond itself. Concerto was born in 1981, a time of dynamic change in Italian viticulture. The previously untapped potential was recognised and experiments were made with new grape varieties and, for the first time, successfully with international grape varieties. Produced from 80% Sangiovese and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, the Rosso Toscana Concerto was one of the pioneers of the later phenomenon of the Supertuscans and was one of the region's elite wines for a long time.

San Giovenale Rosso is the inexpensive entry into the fascinating world of probably the best red wines of Lazio. Just 2,000 bottles are produced each year from this blend of two vintages of Habemus (Etichetta Bianca).

Strong ruby with violet reflections. Infinitely deep, balsamic and intense bouquet of sweet spices, black pepper, aniseed as well as fruity notes of plum, redcurrant and raspberry. Powerful and dense on the palate, always lively and dynamic thanks to a surprising acidity that is brilliantly balanced with fine tannins. Sauvignon Bianco Casa Rossa is pleasantly floral with nuances of camomile and freshly cut pear. Its soft texture is balanced by a zesty acidity, while candied ginger balances green apples and a hint of nectarine. "The Sauvignon Vigneto Zitelle Casa Rossa 2021 needs time to open up. It is dusty and floral with aromas of gravel, dried flowers and nectarines that slowly unfold in the glass. It is silky to the touch, with an admirable weight balanced by fresh acidity. Vibrant green apple and melon sweep across the palate, leaving a hint of minerality. The 2021 folds in on itself on the finish, youthful yet with a saturation of primary concentration that lingers. A tart lemon peel note keeps me reaching for the glass to drink more. After gentle distillation in small copper stills, the grappa matures for at least three years in used Ornellaia barrels (twice as long as prescribed) before being blended with grappas from older stocks to give it an extra measure of depth and character.

The ruby red Sito Moresco is Angelo Gaja's "everyday wine" (o-tone) and shows itself emphatically fresh and fruity and since the 2020 vintage consists only of Barbera and Nebbiolo from plots of the best Barolo and Barbaresco sites. The bouquet has aromas of ripe cherries and berries, underpinned by fine spicy notes. The rich taste spreads powerfully with densely woven tannins, mineral in the long final. SUPERIORE.DE

The Frappato Vino di Contrada BB from the single vineyard Bombolieri is the darkest and most saturated of the three Frappato wines. This vineyard lies high on a promontory with white limestone soils. The expression is open and accessible like the other wines, but in this wine there is an added layer of earth or potting soil to the bright red and black fruits one perceives on the nose. This wine also seems to have extra layering and textural richness. All this fruit is topped with a fresh acidity that plays a big role and makes this wine a nice partner for creamy fettuccine. The Frappato Vino di Contrada FL (from Contrada Fossa di Lupo) shows a slightly looser texture than the other two Contrada wines that have been part of Arianna Occhipinti's portfolio for 4 vintages. The Contrada Fossa di Lupo provides much of the fruit used for the entire Occhipinti line. It consists of sandy limestone with red and dark brown clay veins. The wine shows aromas of red fruits, including plums and blackberries. Slight hints of exotic spices only emerge after the Frappato has had time to really unpack in the glass. This wine is perhaps the most open of the three. Only 2,700 bottles were produced. SUPERIORE.DE

Gaja's white wine Vistamare very much lives up to its name: wide, dazzling and ever-changing, as atmospheric as a lake view. The fine cuvée of Vermentino, Viognier, Chardonnay and Sauvignon is reminiscent of the rich scents of Bolgheri. Full, fruity, elegant and long on the palate. SUPERIORE.DE

The Frappato Vino di Contrada PT (with fruit from the Contrada Pettineo) is a shade lower in colour intensity than the BB. This wine is similar to the FL in terms of accessibility and the very silky and delicate nature of its fruit. Arianna Occhipinti has achieved something marvellous for our collective understanding of the Frappato grape with the fermentation of these contrasting wines. Pettineo has sandy soils, and the Alberello vines (later converted to trellises) are over 60 years old. It is definitely on the right track, as you get a better understanding of the range of the grape variety. This expression shows bright freshness, wild berries, wild roses and hints of sweet almonds.
