Since summer 2023, Chianti Classico producers have been allowed to include the eleven additional geographical indications (UGA = unità geografiche aggiuntive) introduced in 2021 on the labels of the top Gran Selezione category. For Chianti Classico winegrowers, it is a logical step to produce wines that reflect the area in which they were produced as authentically as possible. And customers can thus deepen their knowledge of the relationship between the wines and their region of origin - a real added value.

The grapes for Ricasoli's classic come from a south-facing plot at an ideal altitude of 250 to 450 metres above sea level. Castello di Brolio Gran Selezione is a wonderful wine with great richness and depth. It has an intense bouquet of small red berries, violets and spices. The flavour reveals precision, structure and freshness. The tannin and acidity are well-balanced and promise a long life and an interesting ageing period. SUPERIORE.DE

Lisini's vineyards are located between Sant'Angelo in Colle and Castelnuovo dell'Abate on the inner edge of the Sesta area and are cleansed by the constant breeze from the Tuscan coast. The stony soils with a significant proportion of limestone and the altitude of over 300 metres help to maintain the freshness of the wines. The 2018 is wonderfully fragrant, almost exotic. Plump red fruits and sweet summer herbs fill the mouth, but instead of being heavy, it is balanced and transparent. The powdery tannins are fine and lead to a long, maritime finish. SUPERIORE.DE

Masari only brings its famous Merlot to the cellar and bottle in the best years. Dark, deep garnet red in colour. The Rosso della Centa is a 100% Merlot that comes from a small vineyard on the south-western slopes of the hills of San Giorgio in Brazzano. Red grapes are grown on this one-hectare plot of land, most of them Merlot. The soil of this marvellous field is typical of the Collio, as it was formed by the fragmentation of the alternating layers of marl and sandstone that form the foundation of the hills. The slopes are very steep, which is why the field was terraced and stabilised with dry stone walls.

The wine captivates from the very first swirl of the glass with its distinctly floral bouquet, in which violets and roses combine with menthol and wild blueberries. On the palate, it impresses with its cool personality and a pure blend of mineral blackberries, accompanied by sage and exotic spices. Nuances of dark chocolate, cloves and black liquorice linger on the long and lightly structured final, which is framed by sweet tannins and cedar wood. Rosso della Centa is breathtaking, but it still needs a few years to show its very best side. SUPERIORE.DE

A long-cherished vision of Elisabetta and her daughter Clara finds its completion in this crescent. This 100% Syrah builds on all that the winery has achieved in recent years and for which it has gained world renown. The best grapes, careful selection and a sensitive, clever and innovative vinification combined with a clearly recognisable signature and the already proverbial quality fanaticism.

The grapes come from the two estate-owned vineyards Pian di Fiora and La Vigna del Palo. Pian di Fiora is the cooler site with just 5 ha, the grapes are destemmed by hand and then fermented in 500l clay amphorae. The grapes from the east-facing vineyard La Vigna del Palo are fermented in open 500l barrels. The wines are then blended and matured in 300l barriques for a further 10 months before facing a further 22 months of bottle ageing.

Intense, deep red with dark ruby reflections. On the nose, fresh notes of red berry fruits and spices, hints of black pepper. The palate is complex, with gripping tannins, a fine acid wire and a wonderfully balanced body. It has great ageing potential and is for us the classic meditation wine in impression and expression. The name Pecchia comes from the honeybees that sting the berries in search of sugar. Pecchia Gran Selezione has an enormous intensity in its aromas and flavours, but also remains incredibly refined. Black cherry, plum, leather, liquorice and spice develop effortlessly in the glass. Pecchia is a beautiful and extremely elegant wine with a firm backbone and delicate layers of fruit and spice. Barolo Ornato is a great wine every year. With its wild herbs, minerals and ferrous notes, it captures the true character of Serralunga. Its bouquet shows small berry fruits and cassis, framed by gravel, forest floor, blue flowers and candied orange peel. The wine also has a dusty, mineral note and is very intense both on the nose and on the palate. Ornato starts with finely integrated tannins and an acidity that sustains all these fruit flavours. "The Il Marroneto 2020 Brunello di Montalcino is a wine of special depth and elegance. Alessandro Mori tells me that fermentation in 2020 proceeded nicely with what he describes as a "primordial stew" of grape must, resulting in high pressure "geysers" or "liquid bombs" that rip right through the cap because of pressure build-up. Someone is having tons of fun in the winery. High temperatures (between 36 to 38 degrees Celsius) serve to fix the wine's ruby color and the elegance of its perfumes, which are more floral than fruity.
