An exciting composition of redcurrants, cherry peel, rose petals and floral potpourri then unfolds. The pure Merlot San Walfredo presents itself in an intense cherry red colour. 2017 was the very first vintage of Massetino. It was launched in 2019, exactly 30 years after the first Massetino vintage. The newly designed wine cellar by Italian architects Zito & Mori was also inaugurated in 2019. The birth of the second wine and the opening of the wine cellar represent a historic moment for Masseto and clearly contribute to its recognition as a winery.

Massetino already shows a self-confident personality, which is not surprising as he shares the same pedigree with Masseto. Just like its older brother, it skilfully showcases the contrast between power and opulence combined with restraint and class. The high quality potential, which was already evident when tasting the grapes before the harvest, is fully expressed in the quality profile of Massetino 2021. Every year, the grapes for Solaia come from the sunniest corner of the vineyard of the same name on Antinori's Tenuta Tignanello estate. "Intense and full on the nose, redolent of ripe black fruits, floral aspects and gentle spice. The palate is round and full, rich and muscular, yet tightly and cleanly wound, with hints of liquorice, graphite, pepper, cinnamon and cloves adding an immediate but pleasing spice. It feels well-crafted, juicy with a high acidity that lifts the palate and gives it freshness and brightness, along with really delicious strawberry and raspberry fruit that captivates with dried flowers and bitter orange peel. The tannins are very fine and well integrated, yet the wine remains grippy from the start and persistent on the finish. It is nuanced and complex and still has plenty of power, but it comes across as refined, supple, purposeful and controlled. It's not elegant, more like an animal in a cage that has yet to realise its full potential, but it's stylish. A truly delicious wine with so much purity and sense of place." Decanter
