Under the name Askos, Li Veli summarises a project in which long-forgotten, indigenous grape varieties are rediscovered and cultivated on the ideal terroir selected for them. The red Susumaniello grape is said to originate from the nearby Dalmatian coast and is one of the most exciting grape varieties in Puglia today, even though it is rarely vinified as a single variety.

The Susumaniello Askos is a solid red wine with a rich bouquet of red cherries, plums, dark spices and red earth. These warm flavours combine with a medium intensity and full, round fruit to create an extroverted style that is both soft and pleasantly fruity. Tradition meets modernity - very successful! In 1963, guided only by his taste and love of wine, he began to dedicate himself to wine production in his parents' winery and produced the first pure Tocai in 1965. At the time, the historic label featured a drawing of his fire engine, which he also used to deliver the wine to customers. With the 2019 vintage, the winery returned to these historical roots and included the cute drawing on some of its wine labels.

A more than respectable performance for a so-called basic Lagrein: minty freshness, accentuated by floral notes and a hint of white pepper. The 2022 Lagrein still seems a little hesitant to show its full potential today, but the first sip already reveals a deep, silky texture. The first vintage of Curej was harvested in 2019 with the same respect for the landscape and the grape variety, and the name says it all: it is the nickname of the families who have always lived in the village of Rocchetta Tanaro, which has a population of 1,400. This wine is therefore an impressive reminder of its roots, the typical flavour of the Barbera grape and the open, wide and happy panaroma that can be enjoyed from the San Bernardo vineyard.

Curej is an extremely fresh, straightforward and precise Barbera, full of primary flavours, which impressively reflects the signature of the Braida winery, famous for the grape, because hardly anyone can interpret the DNA of this classic Piedmontese grape variety better than Rafaella and Giuseppe Bologna!
