Nonino

Silvia Milocco Nonino, Antonio's wife and from the third generation of the distillery family, lost her husband in the war. The only wealth she had for the economic survival of her family was the pomace. She set to work with determination and learnt distilling in the early 1940s. Before she became Italy's very first female master distiller, she worked as a cook in the family pub. Her botanical knowledge was a great advantage when creating her first liqueur. She wanted to express her Friulian homeland with her products: pure, authentic and unadulterated. She therefore created an aperitif from botanicals, which she called "Aperitivo Bianco".

After their grandchildren Cristina, Antonella, Elisabetta and Francesca spent three years researching the botanicals of the traditional recipe, they created a new version of the "Aperitivo Bianco" in 2018, this time enhanced with the grape spirit ÙE Fragolino. The sisters drew inspiration from the recipes in the family archive and transformed an old botanical recipe into a contemporary gourmet drink.

Flowers, roots and fruits are carefully selected according to their origin and organoleptic properties, then dried at a low temperature to preserve the natural intensity of fragrance, flavour and colour. Gentle filtering preserves the citrus freshness and sweet mildness of the plants. A 100% plant-based harmony that is enhanced by the ÙE Monovitigno Fragolino grape brandy, which emphasises the natural balsamic nuances with Mediterranean fruity notes. Hints of blackberry and wild berries round off the flavour.

The special thing about it: the new aperitivo is 100% natural and vegan and is made without any additives.

Quintessentia is the winner in the bitter liqueur category at the Ultimate Spirit Challenge 2021, the world's most prestigious spirits competition. Out of more than 52 participating countries and over 300 finalists, Amaro Nonino Quintessentia was awarded the top prize, the Chairmans Trophy. The jury, headed by Paul Pacult, described the Amaro as follows: "Beguiling flavours of orange and camomile complement each other. In memory of grandfather Antonio, the Nonino family celebrates a return to its origins with Amaro Nonino Quintessentia by creating a Riserva for the first time in 2021, which undergoes more than 24 months of natural ageing in oak barriques and small casks. Antonio Nonino, the third generation of the distiller family, used to store Amaro Carnia in small wooden barrels; steel was prohibitively expensive at the time. Through contact with the oak, the liqueur was enriched with new notes and aromas. Although there are no clear regulations for the maturation of liqueurs, in line with the Nonino philosophy, maturation takes place in the dedicated cellar, sealed and under constant supervision by the customs and monopoly office.

The result is extraordinary: Quintessentia becomes softer, the citrus notes move into the background and it gains elegance, which is expressed in numerous subtle and warm notes. At the beginning, there are autumnal scents of brushwood and moss that give way to the scent of sultanas and passito. There are also balsamic hints, the scent of flamed orange and caramelised vanilla and great persistence and intensity. SUPERIORE.DE

AnticaCuvée is a fine, very aromatic Riserva. Nonino uses the traditional still for distillation. The inviting, clear amber colour is the result of ageing in small barrels. Distillato di Miele di Agrumi is made from 100% honey from citrus plants. It is fresh, with a bouquet reminiscent of lemon and orange blossom. Very intense on the palate with hints of fruit from Mediterranean gardens. The honey distillate harmonises wonderfully with the finest cheese, goose liver, tea cakes, desserts with honey and ice cream.
