The great boom of the Fattoria di Fèlsina began in 1966, when the great shipowner Domenico Poggiali from Ravenna acquired the beautiful property in Castelnuovo Berardenga in the Chianti Classico area. The new owner immediately began to study the vineyards on the 400 hectares of the estate. He also built underground cellars that withstood high temperature fluctuations. Poggiali's son-in-law Giuseppe Mazzocolin made the really big breakthrough. The most important innovations were the reduction of the grape yields in the vineyard, new education systems, a later harvest - connected with a higher maturity of the grapes - were the most important innovations.
In 1983, the Fattoria di Fèlsina decided to produce wines as close to nature as possible. Mazzocolin is still today more important than the amount of the harvest yield for a high biodiversity in the vineyards in order to protect the cultivated areas from pests. The landowner also implemented suggestions of the oenologist Franco Bernabei. He had advised to select the best, healthiest and hardest Sangiovese vines in the eleven vineyards of Fèlsina and to use them for a targeted field selection. This example is proof that the close link between the grape variety and the terroir is a very important component of Fèlsina's wines.
At least in the Chianti Classico area, Mazzocolin refuses to mix Sangiovese with international varieties. The winery achieved world fame with the pure Crus Vigneto Rancia and the Supertoskaner Fontalloro, both of which premiered in 1983. Fèlsina's products are harmoniously linked in a network of terroir, history and cultural references. They are produced with a great deal of expertise and prudence. The Fattoria di Fèlsina is therefore recognised as one of the ten most successful wine producers in Italy in the eternal list of the Gambero Rossobest. SUPERIORE.DE
"Fèlsina belongs to the cult labels of Tuscany. The pure wines, on the other hand, which want to know little about modern, short-lived fashions, shine with elegance and personality."Gambero Rosso
