Lagrein is a red grape variety from the popular northern Italian dual region of Trentino-Alto Adige. It is assumed that the name derives from the "Valle Lagarina", a side valley in Trentino. According to the latest analyses, one parent is Teroldego, while the second parentage is still being researched.
Lagrein is relatively easy to recognise by its dark berry aromas and a delicate scent of violets, often also of plums and sour cherries. It has a fairly dark colour, is full-bodied and velvety, has mild tannins and a comparatively moderate acidity. As an autochthonous red wine, it has been booming in South Tyrol for decades, but demand is also increasing internationally among connoisseurs who love independent and autochthonous grape variety wines. And it clearly is; there is actually no comparable red wine that offers this wonderful dark fruit fullness and drinking pleasure at the same time. This is pure regional varietal typicity. Lagrein is often also referred to as Lagrein Dunkel or Lagrein Scuro, and as a rosé it is also known as Kretzer.
So if you are looking for a powerful, dark, yet mild and velvety red wine with character, Lagrein is the right choice. With just over 700 hectares of vineyards in Italy, the variety is quite rare. The best examples come from the warm valley area around Gries near Bolzano and the numerous representatives aged in barrels as Riserva are definitely in a league of their own.
