Trying their hand at one of Italy's most historic red wines is a pretty daring endeavour, even for the daughters of world-famous winemakers. For the three cousins Marta, Dominga and Enrica Cotarella, however, the Le Macioche winery in Montalcino was love at first sight – securing the approval of their prominent fathers Renzo and Riccardo Cotarella.
"Our Brunello focuses on the Sangiovese character and remains true to the family style as much as possible," Dominga explains in conversation. For this reason, the three and a half hectares of vineyards, which are cultivated on a slope at an altitude of 450 metres, consist exclusively of Sangiovese Grosso vines. With a perfect south-west exposure, this demanding variety thrives on the clay, marl and limestone subsoil that is so characteristic of Montalcino.
