Vigna Paganelli 2016 is a phenomenal achievement and a wine that not only captures the spirit of this equally great vintage, but also the true essence of a very authentic Brunello Riserva. This wine from the single vineyard of the same name is sharp, flawless and impeccable. It starts slowly and shyly, but then blossoms into beautiful intensity and aromatic brilliance. It offers a very authentic and unadulterated interpretation of Sangiovese with aromas of wild berries followed by pressed violets, damp earth, tobacco and lightly toasted spices. The bouquet is seamless and very long-lasting. The same applies to the mouthfeel. The wine offers a fine and silky texture with a good dose of power and personality on the finish. And certainly the old days were not so bad: silky and fragrant and with exceptional balance, Via Nuova is a real eye-catcher. Pacentis Vecchie Vigne is still one of the most modern wines of the sun-drenched appellation in southern Tuscany. Its fruit comes from old vines that are between 35 and 50 years old. However, the wine also offers hints of exotic spices, spicy tobacco and even a hint of talcum powder or buttered popcorn that comes from the oak (it is aged for 24 months in French barriques). The temperature fluctuations during the day play a decisive role in developing the finest flavours, which are elegant and complex. The grapes for this remarkably Burgundian Gran Selezione come from the single vineyard of the same name in a 2.25-hectare Chianti Classico vineyard, which was planted in 1971 with a density of 3,400 vines per hectare and is south-facing on old terraces. Riecine has leased these plots since the 1980s, and in the 2019 debut vintage, the winery succeeded in acquiring this site, which is one of the best terroirs in the Chianti Classico region. The bottles are numbered and around 4,000 bottles and 50 magnums are bottled each year.
