Regaleali “Le Rose” Nerello Mascalese Terre Siciliane IGT 2023
Countless lush roses from all over the world grow on the Regaleali estate. This fragrant rosato is a tribute to the roses of Regaleali. Brilliant colour, fruity aroma of strawberries, cherries and mulberries, rich and spicy flavour, fresh, with a certain minerality and a pleasant sapidity. SUPERIORE.DE
"Bright cherry orange, sparkling. Smells of vanilla pod, sugared raspberries and cherries on the nose, with a slight hazelnut cream aftertaste. On the palate with a fine fruit melt and well-integrated acidity, slightly noticeable tannins and a savoury, slightly bitter finish with amarena cherries." Falstaff
"The 2023 Regaleali Le Rose is 100% Nerello Mascalese. It emanates a pretty blend of white strawberry, mint leaf and wet stone. This is zesty and full of energy, with brisk acidity that propels its mineral-laced orchard fruits as hints of sour green melon form toward the close. It tapers off with a salty tension that keeps the mouth watering for more as a tinge of tart lime lingers on." Vinous

“Erse” Rosso Etna DOC 2020
Sweet cherries, flowers, spices and a hint of mint on the nose. Firm yet harmonious tannin in the lively, very intense flavour, which never feels heavy but elegant until the final. SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2020 Etna Rosso Erse keeps me returning to the glass to take in its vibrant and spicy bouquet, where sour cherries complement dried roses, cloves and a hint of fresh mint. This wine is round and juicy, yet pure, with mineral red berries that saturate, while the lively acidity maintains a fantastic freshness. A subtle coating of fine tannins and a salty note define the final, while the 2020 tapers off smoothly and grippily under a hint of red flowers. This is an excellent entry-level Etna Rosso." Vinous
"The entry-level Tenuta di Fessina 2020 Etna Rosso Erse is elegant and lean with a fun set of aromas that recall white pepper, wild berry, blue flower and candied orange peel. I like this fresh, snappy style and you get great value." Wine Advocate

“Tefra” Rosato Etna DOC 2022
Tefra (Greek word for ash) is a 100% Nerello Mascalese and comes from a parcel in the Contrada Rampante on the northern slopes of Etna between the municipalities of Randazzo and Castiglione di Sicilia. Bright pink colour. Delicate and very clear nose of raspberries and wild strawberries, oranges and herbs. Fresh, juicy and vibrant in the mouth, very tasty racy acidity, finishes with good cool length. SUPERIORE.DE

“Laeneo” Nerello Cappuccio Sicilia DOC 2019
It is very rare and highly commendable that a pure Nerello Cappuccio is bottled here, when the Nerello Mascalese is usually the red top dog on Etna. “Animavulcano” Rosso Etna DOC 2022 (BIO)
Delicate, elegant Nerello Mascalese with fine aromas of red fruits and raspberries, enveloped in a pleasant citrus freshness. As the wine progresses, it develops a smoky note associated with the strong component of lava rock that characterises the volcanic soil of Etna. Lively, harmonious and full of flavour on the palate, it is a resolutely versatile wine that goes perfectly with a wide range of fish dishes, shellfish and white meats. SUPERIORE.DE
"Animavulcano offers a fragrant sip of dark cherry and raspberry. It's quite dense (courtesy of the vintage), with good acidity supporting the weight of fruit, accompanied by some spice and textural interest. Blood orange and bitter herbs emerge on the intense and very slightly drying finish." Decanter
"A rich and layered red Etna with sliced dried strawberries, plums, bark, dark mushrooms and some volcanic spice. It is medium to full-bodied with round, chewy tannins and a savoury finish. From organically grown grapes. Give it three or four years to mellow." James Suckling

“Eruzione 1614” Nerello Mascalese Sicilia DOC 2020
The eruption of 1614 is legendary in the history of Etna, as it lasted ten years, making it the longest recorded eruption of the active volcano to date. A very impressive and fitting name for Planeta's Etna series of equally impressive wines.
It could hardly be more autochthonous: this excellent wine from the Nerello Mascalese grape comes from the hotspot on the east coast of Sicily, from the slopes of Mount Etna. Bright cherry red in colour, a fine aroma of raspberry and blood orange, gripping, taut acidity, silky tannins and a lively elegance with beautiful minerality. Great, long and unique! SUPERIORE.DE
"Impressive aromas of mulberries and flowers; juicy on the palate, beautifully polished, balanced and elegant through to the final, red berry flavours, soft, honey notes and yet the acidity is in balance. A lovely accompaniment to food." Vinum
"Burgundy-inspired bouquet with red berries, light strawberries, red cherries and balsamic notes, sage. Well-structured on the palate with gripping red berry fruit, sandy tannins and a savoury, peppery acidity structure that lingers into the final." Weinwisser
"It shows aromas of ripe cherries and grilled plums, with fragrant flavours of cigar box spices, broom and wild rosemary that linger on the fine, taut finish." Wine Spectator
"Cherries and cranberries with some candied watermelon both on the nose and on the palate. Medium body, creamy tannins and a tangy finish. Juicy." James Suckling
"The 2020 Sicilia Nerello Mascalese Eruzione 1614 opens in a medium dark ruby red colour with lively primary fruit. Wild berries and cassis are underpinned by gently rendered oak tones of cinnamon and campfire ash. Although technically outside the DOC area (just a few metres), this is one of the finest sites on Etna. The tannins are firm but silky, which means you can drink this bottle straight away without ageing." Wine Advocate
"The 2020 is decidedly savoury, exuding hints of grilled rosemary and sage, ashen stones and crushed blackberries. On the palate, it is characterised by juicy forest fruits, underscored by a hint of blood orange and zesty acidity. It tapers off long and gently tannic, closing on a pleasantly bitter note as the minty herbal tones fade. Wow." Vinous
"The nose begins spicy and herbaceous with notes of stone, salt, pepper, oregano and fennel before lighter flavours of cherry blossom, hibiscus and strawberry emerge. On the palate, the cherry and strawberry flavours sparkle, while a lingering, salty stoniness balances a silky smooth texture with an intense, salty freshness." Wine Enthusiast

"Sparkling copper red colour. Distinct bouquet of candied apricots, orange peel with light herbal spice. Smooth on entry, unbelievably soft and elegant on the palate, with a long finish." Falstaff
"The 2023 Etna Rosato is delicate, with a nuanced blend of white strawberry, wet stone and a hint of peach sorbet. It balances a zesty core of juicy acidity and sour lime with ripe orchard fruit. The finish is remarkably fresh and clean, with a hint of minerality that leaves you wanting more." Vinous
"A smoky, peatlike style here with red plums and whiffs of flowers. Light-bodied, this has moderate acidity and a refreshing finish, silky and polished to the end. Simple but nice." James Suckling

“Contrada Diciasettesalme” Rosso Etna DOC 2021
Brilliant ruby red colour. Diciasettesalme offers a wonderful bouquet of dark fruit flavours, some flint and Cuban cigar tobacco. Balanced, elegant, full-bodied and salty fresh on the palate. Stylistically and qualitatively very successful. SUPERIORE.DE
"Medium-light red; reductive-barrelled, plum cake, quite deep, arouses curiosity; dense, sweetness, depth of fruit, lots of beautiful tannin, length." Merum
"Brilliant ruby red colour. On the nose, hints of mustard seeds, dried rose petals, raspberries, ripe cherries and delicately resinous tones, reminiscent of plaster on the finish. Hearty on the palate with tightly woven tannins, powerful, stony, with a polished red fruit final, currently still somewhat unbalanced." Falstaff
"A flavoursome and lively red wine with notes of tapenade, sun-dried tomatoes, raspberries and cherry stones. Taut and firm, with a medium body and firm tannins. Excellent focus." James Suckling
"The 2021 Etna Rosso Diciassettesalme shows dusty minerals and dried fruit flavours. This wine generally has more muscle and dark fruit compared to the Zottorinoto, which tends to be floral and more delicate in character. The Diciassettesalme is fresh and straightforward and delivers all the fundamentals of Nerello Mascalese from this mighty Sicilian volcano. The vineyard is located directly below the Cottanera winery at 780 metres above sea level and is planted on light or grey lava rock. The soils are unique for this location." Wine Advocate
"Vivid ruby with garnet hues, this volcanic red boasts fresh black cherry and dried blackberry aromas. Toasty notes, liquorice, and minerality add complexity. Concentrated palate, supple tannins, refreshing acidity. Elegant yet robust, with a hint of heat on the finish." Decanter

“Pietradolce” Rosso Etna DOC 2022
Pietradolce Rosso is reminiscent of an elegant red from Burgundy. Sparkling, intense garnet red colour. Light, aromatic tones of cherry, raspberry, slate, cigar tobacco and cedar wood, medium-bodied and very energetic on the palate, flavoursome fruit, salty, balanced and long. Be sure to aerate! SUPERIORE.DE
"Grapefruit, fresh cranberries and minerals on the nose. Fresh and almost tangy on the palate with savoury citrus fruits and a firm tannin structure. Pleasantly grippy and structured." James Suckling
"The predominantly cool, fresh and earthy nose also reveals tart, subtly warm aromas of tea leaves, hibiscus, plums, cranberries and orange peel. On the palate, these fruit flavours are underlined by almost metallic citrus and pepper notes. The acidity fizzes in the background." Wine Enthusiast
"The 2022 Etna Rosso lifts from the glass with a bouquet that mixes savory and sweet: woodland berries, cloves, grilled herbs and wet concrete. This is fruit-focused, with masses of ripe black cherries accentuated by hints of sweet spice as a gentle staining of tannins forms toward the close. The 2022 finishes remarkably fresh, enlivened by a bump of juicy acidity as rosy inner florals gradually taper off. This makes for an excellent introduction to the Pietradolce style." Vinous

Etna Rosso DOC 2022
Aromas of dried roses, incense, white pepper, lavender and crushed wild blueberries in the glass. Juicy character on the palate with zesty acidity and tart red and blue fruits. As it progresses, it tapers off with beautiful primary tension and leaves a mysterious hint of gravel and bitter blackberry on the palate. Wonderful exoticism from Etna! SUPERIORE.DE
"Here, too, a blend from 5 contrade. Attractive bouquet with hints of Pinot, finely outlined red fruit and earthy-mineral notes. Sweet and tart fruits alternate on the delicate palate, supported by a good and lively acidity structure, shows a lot of grip." Weinwisser
"The 2022 Etna Rosso opens with a woody mix of savoury herbs, underbrush and red liquorice. There's a lovely inner sweetness here, with crisp red and blue fruits swirling over a stream of savoury acidity. The 2022 lingers but remains remarkably fresh, finishing on a tart blackberry note." Vinous
"Cottanera's Etna Rosso 2022 is deliciously vibrant and textural, with ripe dark cherry and herbal notes emphasised by some nice sapidity which beckons you back for another sip." Decanter

Etna Rosso DOC 2022
This archetypal Etna Rosso presents itself with great grace and beautiful varietal typicity. The bouquet has aromas of strawberry and cherry, the palate has medium-bodied fruit, slightly salty notes and spicy nuances in the beautiful final. It shows the specific volcanic character and is made from 100% Nerello Mascalese, which is harvested at 600 to 700 metres above sea level on ashy volcanic soils. SUPERIORE.DE
"Berry bouquet with ripe red fruits such as red cherries, pomegranate, orange peel, plus bloody iodised notes. Dense and elegantly woven on the palate, concentrated mid-palate with small red berries, framed by a peppery, savoury acidity structure, fine tannins and a racy final. Wow, and this is the entry-level red!" Weinwisser
"Tightly wound at the core, with bright, creamy, fleshy black cherry and damson, overlaid with herbs and supported by gently mouthcoating tannins. The quality is evident and it's one of the most appealing Etna Rossos for an immediately pleasurable sip thanks to its contrast between freshness and depth of dark fruits." Decanter
"This energetic red Etna has a well-filled nose of blood orange, violets, geranium, black pepper and assertive pomegranate. Full-bodied with a soft, supple attack, crisp acidity and velvety tannins. It has very good fruit concentration, a crisp finish and good balance. It is drinkable now, but will continue to develop and gain in integration and complexity." James Suckling

Nerello Cappuccio Terre Siciliane IGT 2021
Nerello Cappuccio with dried flowers, cherries and spices on the nose offers elegant pleasure. Medium-bodied, delicate and ethereal on the finish. A fascinating interpretation of the indigenous Etna grape variety. SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2021 Nerello Cappuccio is dark and brooding in the glass. Hints of sage and balsamic spice complicate dried black cherries on the nose. It’s much more giving on the palate, pleasantly ripe in style with a wave of tart wild berry fruits and saline minerals that saturate, adding tension toward the close. The 2021 tapers off with a staining of primary concentration, gently grippy tannins and a bitter tinge of tart blackberry that lingers on and on." Vinous
"Flavours of watermelon, slightly tart cherries and crushed stones follow through to a medium body, with bright acidity and a creamy and round tannin structure. Delicious now, but even better in a few years." James Suckling

The shooting stars of recent years are Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio. At the moment they are the "hottest" red wines from Italy. The Sicilians, however, call Etna tender "Mamma Etna", because the black lava soil is very fertile. Here there are ancient vineyards whose planting rights were sold to Tuscany during the boom in the Maremma. In 2001 there were no more than 20 farms. Today there are again more than 140 active around Mount Etna. Many of them with mini estates under 10 hectares.
The love of the lateral beginners made the locals change their minds.
After the success of a few cross-country beginners, the people recalled Etna, which had been neglected until then, and revitalised the ancient steep vineyards. The price of land exploded when one well-known company after another wanted to buy vineyards here. Big names such as Cusumano, Tasca d'Almerita or Planeta have also invested here, because the elegance, mineral spice and clear fruit of Rossi dell'Etna has spread quickly and also the international wine critics' guild considers the wines of Passopisciaro, Pietradolce and Tenute delle Terre Nere every year with high scores.
The elegance of Bourgogne with the finesse of the Langhe.
What do these reds from the slopes of the volcano taste like? Imagine something between a good Burgundy and a Barbaresco. That's Rosso dell'Etna. Nerello Mascalese is the more elegant brother, always in the majority, often to 100%. And Nerello Cappuccio is the somewhat more robust, full-bodied and high-yield little brother, who is allowed to play with max. 10-20%. Most of the vineyards are situated on steep slopes between 500 and 1,000m above sea level. The interplay of cold falling winds from the long snow-covered Etna, which is over 3,300 metres high, and the summer heat, as well as the constant breeze from the east coast only a few kilometres away as the crow flies, create a unique micro-climate that promotes fruit formation in the best possible way. The mostly 60-100 years old vines in Albarello vine culture produce extremely low yields, but mineral, elegant wines with good ripening potential. SUPERIORE.DE
