Pinot Bianco or Pinot Blanc comes from the French Pinot family with Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc. In old Italian wine books, it was long equated or confused with Chardonnay, which is why many winemakers thought they had Chardonnay in their vineyards.
The variety is particularly cultivated in South Tyrol and in the Collio, where it is considered a perfect food companion (e.g. the examples of Lageder, Hofstätter, Schiopetto, Volpe Pasini and others). The relatively neutral variety often smells of pears and delicate nuts, can also show floral notes and is vinified in many variations. As a classic food companion, Pinot Bianco usually comes from the steel tank.
Somewhat more mature examples are often vinified in large, neutral wooden barrels. Pinot Blancs from good sites and best vintages can also be aged - at least in part - in barrique and undergo some batonnage (this is understood to mean the stirring of the fine lees in the barrel), especially in South Tyrol and in the Collio. These then become quite finely structured, delicately creamy wines, which then also a few years of storage do (even very) good.
