The second novelty of the 2018 vintage is Vietti's Barolo Monvigliero. The special feature: Approx. 60% of the grapes are not destemmed, which enhances the aromatic nuances of the wine. Youthful notes of raspberry and blueberry are flanked by black pepper, gentian, porcelain and black olives. The palate has a beguilingly soft texture, fine and creamy, underpinned by wonderful laurel and floral aromas. Monvigliero impresses with its purity, its serenity and its class. Excellent. Barolo Cerequio unfolds its cornucopia of cherries, ripe red berries, violets, leather and tar in the glass only after many minutes. Firm and punchy on the palate - shows an impressive and solid construction, yet the wine remains delicate, mineral and finesse-rich all the time. It is perhaps the most balanced of Roberto Voerzio's top tier of wines, and even though it appears quite approachable when young, it too will only reveal its true potential and class in many years. Just 500 bottles were bottled of this Barolo Riserva from the top year 2000. During his lifetime, Pio Boffa always put away a few bottles of the best vintages for many years, in order to drink them with good friends at some point. For the 140th anniversary of the winery and in honour of the enfant terrible of Piedmontese viticulture, who died much too early in the same year, these are now being distributed by hand to only a few importers around the world. Daughter Federica explains: "This wine is a tribute to the longevity of our Barolo and to our family tradition. The label shows my grandmother with a picture of the cellar key she always wore on her necklace. Barolo Brunate is a stunning expression with great complexity and finesse. The wine shows a lively garnet red colour with a balanced and intense bouquet: sage, mint, undergrowth, tar, tobacco and liquorice nuances give Brunate a striking aromatic complexity. At the core of the bouquet, as well as on the palate, there is a lot of dark fruit, including blackcurrants and plums. Gains breadth with time in the glass and with further bottle maturity, the already fine tannins will surely become even smoother. The 2017 Barolo La Serra emerges from the glass with a playful bouquet of dark red fruits, tar, smoke, liquorice, spices and new leather. The high-toned notes of rose petals, which are typical of this vineyard near La Morra, are complemented by fine strawberry and raspberry notes, resulting in a wonderfully elegant and subtle overall package that is an attractive, extremely elegant Barolo that is hard to beat in terms of finesse, purity and length. Extremely focused Barolo in a class of its own. Precisely defined fruit notes of wild berries, redcurrant, rosehip and crushed slate. Barolo Riserva Ravera Vigna Elena is a beautiful wine from Elvio Cogno and, not surprisingly, as is so often the case, the best from the collection of the family-run winery from Novello. It is aged in large Slavonian oak barrels and produced only in selected vintages. It exudes delicate truffle notes and aromas of wild berries with a hint of exotic spice. The wine is soft, lush and well-structured, and it makes your mouth water. This Barolo shows the power and inner structure of the Ravera Cru and should age beautifully over the next two decades. Roberto Voerzio is a master of his trade. The crowning glory, however, is his Riserva Case Nere, matured for 10 years in large wood, which he brings to market just at the beginning of a long (incipient) phase of drinking maturity. Dried autumn leaves, macerated cherries, tobacco, spices and liquorice give this exceptional Barolo an impressive complexity and deep nuances that only gradually unfold in the glass. Four years ago, Pio Boffa bought himself a "small" present for his 60th birthday. Not a new set of golf clubs, a picture hanging in the hall, a holiday for him and the family. No. Just a vineyard called Mosconi in Monforte d'Alba, a region of Piedmont where four generations of the Pio Cesare dynasty never gained a foothold. Originally, the grapes from the 10-hectare vineyard were to enhance the quality of his classic Barolo, but after the first barrel samples, it was unmistakably clear to Pio Boffa that this would be at least an equal - if stylistically different - counterpart to the hitherto undisputed flagship Ornato.

Barolo Brunate from luxuriant, fertile location in La Morra, shines with concentration and wealth. Elegant bouquet of dark cherries, plums and a hint of citrus fruit. The taste is full-bodied, but never powerful. Wonderfully structured, granular tannin, good acidity. Brunate 2013 requires some patience, which is however rewarded with a wonderful drop. La Spinetta's Riserva from the Barolo single vineyard Campè is filled only in the best vintages and is sold exclusively in Magnum bottles. Bright bright red. In the nose a fascinating and constantly changing variety of, among others, liquorice, pipe tobacco, black fruits, cassis, tar, rose hip and dried herbs. On the palate with beguiling sweet, dark red fruit, in addition again fine notes of tobacco and herbal spice. The Torriglione vineyard is a stone's throw away from Annunziata and the Barolo vineyard of the same name is not only released two years later than the other crus of the estate, but is also bottled exclusively in magnums. It first reveals its very own character with a noble reserve and reticence, and its density and complexity only give a flavour of what awaits Barolo lovers after a few minutes of aeration. Everything is in its place here and there is more than enough of it: freshness, fruit, acidity, tannin, and all of it paired with a finesse that is unrivalled and that one would rather expect to find in Burgundy or on the Etna. The grapes for the Granbussia, which is only produced in the best years with just 3,000 bottles, come from the best and oldest vines of the Romirasco, Colonnello and Cicala vineyards. It remains in the cellar for at least 9 years before being put on sale. Finest nebbiolo nose with notes of anise, truffle, leather and wild berries. Warm and fine on the palate, it shows a terrific aroma and depth with all its freshness. This wine has to be experienced and it is very difficult to describe it in all its parts. For us, it is one of the greatest Barolos of the entire appellation, along with Villero by Vietti and Vite Talin by Sandrone. SUPERIORE.DE
