“Fallwind” Riesling Alto Adige DOC 2023
The evening fall winds of the Mendel Mountains characterise the entire terroir of the St. Michael-Eppan winery. They ensure cool nights and give the grapes the extraordinary characteristics that characterise the aromas, unmistakable freshness and longevity of the wines. The fall wind is the natural force that blows over the vineyard every day, positively influencing the climate and supporting the valuable work of the winegrowers at the cooperative winery.
The Fallwind wines are ambassadors of their terroir and reflect the strengths of the growing region in a unique way. Most of them are from selected vineyards that have been cultivated for centuries. Strict quality guidelines, low yields, intensive manual labour in the vineyard and gentle and individual ageing in the cellar make them what they are: Characterful, precise and unique wines with varietal characteristics that will win over every connoisseur.
Fallwind Riesling is an extremely elegant wine. Germany's favourite grape has found the ideal terroir in parts of South Tyrol. Riesling places high demands on the location and prefers a cool but very sunny climate. The porphyry soils there give it fruit, minerality and an ideal acid backbone. SUPERIORE.DE
"A delicate and restrained riesling that’s well made and gently fresh. Aromas of lemon leaves, tangerines and white peaches, then zesty on the palate with a medium body and a tight, precise finish." James Suckling

The wine skilfully reflects the basic identifying characteristics of this distinctive variety in its primary stage. This Riesling renano (Rhine Riesling) smells wonderfully of honeycomb, pear, pineapple, flint and a fine hint of petroleum. Pleasantly streamlined mouthfeel with precise fruit and freshness and always the necessary complexity and seriousness. Very serious and independent with great drinking flow. SUPERIORE.DE

“Surmont” Riesling Vigneti delle Dolomiti IGT 2020 (BIO)
Here comes Surmont, the successor to Rain Riesling. As in the past, part of the grapes come from the South Tyrolean lowlands, while the other part now comes from the Valle Isarco from high and cool sites on soils of volcanic origin, which give the wine a fresher, almost alpine style.
Bright, straw-yellow colour with a slight greenish tinge. Clean, distinct, fragrant varietal aroma with fine fruity notes (peach, pear). Balanced, medium-bodied. Fresh, juicy finish. The racy acidity is harmoniously integrated into the fruit structure. A wonderful Riesling italico in a small edition. SUPERIORE.DE

“Pétracine” Riesling Langhe DOC 2021 (BIO)
The pioneer of Riesling on Italian soil is Aldo Vajra. Already fascinated by the variety as a student, he planted the first vines of the White Riesling variety in the Langa. Very light yellow-green in its youth, it develops into a strong straw yellow. The aromas of the noble Pètracine also take a varied course. Starting with peach and apricot, delicate floral and citrus notes follow in its mid-palate, while minerality comes to the fore as it matures. Harmonious and precisely structured on the palate, almost austere, fascinatingly complex and long. Great ageing potential! SUPERIORE.DE

“Private Reserve” Vinschgauer Riesling Alto Adige DOC 2016
The Pratzner family keeps a few hundred bottles of each good vintage, which are then matured in the cellar for a further 6 years. These refined wines are then sold in small quantities as "Private Reserves" to selected retailers and restaurants, demonstrating the impressive ageing potential of their wines, which are matured for 10 months on the fine lees.
Sparkling, intense straw yellow colour. Interwoven and dense nose of juicy yellow vineyard peach with hints of apricot and lemon balm. Very convincing interplay of fruit and acidity on the palate with plenty of tension and depth, with an impressive minerality on the finish. SUPERIORE.DE

"The 2022 Riesling Pétracine is a beautiful white that marries varietal notes with the natural richness of the year. Sweet jasmine, tangerine peel, ginger, passionfruit and lemon confit lend exotic beauty to Vajra's Riesling in 2022. I imagine time in bottle will bring out more of the textual oiliness that is in the background at present." Vinous
"The organic G.D. Vajra 2022 Langhe Riesling Pétracine (the name is hard to read given the vines surrounding the lettering on the front of the label) is very direct and bright with a sharp citrus quality that stands out thanks to crushed stone and tropical fruit. “Eruzione 1614” Riesling Terre Siciliane IGT 2020
In the history of Etna, the eruption of 1614 is legendary, as it lasted ten years and is thus to date the longest recorded eruption of the volcano that is still active today. A very impressive and fitting name for Planeta's Etna series of equally impressive wines.
Riesling from Etna? Initially an experiment, admittedly. But it can truly be called successful and great: the latest offspring of Planeta's Etna family with a delicate pale colour with green reflections; on the nose with a great variety of aromas such as white apple, plum, lemon and yellow flowers. Perfectly dry on the palate, with mild acidity, fine minerality and (especially with increasing maturity) pronounced fruitiness and beguiling depth and length. SUPERIORE.DE
"This has plenty of citrus zest, orange blossom, acacia honey and pomelo. Medium-bodied with sharp acidity and a citrusy, floral palate. Dry yet honeyed character. Delicious finish." James Suckling

“Anadûron” Vinschgauer Riesling Alto Adige DOC 2019
Anadûron is the Celtic name for Naturns, which means "settlement by the swamp". The selection is a tribute to the Pratzner family's home village of Naturns. 12 months of fermentation and ageing in tonneau, 5 months in stainless steel and a further 31 months of ageing in the bottle.
Pretty and slightly exotic aroma of crushed stones, green plants and nectarines. Silky and youthfully dense on the palate with a net of minerality that skilfully envelops the tart fruit. The bright acidity provides a beautiful balance, Anadûron finishes long and full of spicy tension. Great ageing potential, Falkenstein's new masterpiece is at the beginning of a long journey on which it will continue to develop. SUPERIORE.DE
"Powerful, bright yellow-green colour. Impressive nose with lots of rich, ripe peach fruit, plus plenty of apricot, underpinned by notes of flint, some sage. Juicy and with great tension on the palate, fully ripe vineyard peach, good tension, long finish." Falstaff
"Intense smoky notes with candied lemon, pineapple and white peach aromas. Very juicy and crisp, with a light to medium body, chewy acidity and substance on the finish." James Suckling

Riesling is often referred to as the queen of white wine grape varieties. Although there are only just over 50,000 hectares of it worldwide, it is one of the very best varieties, the "Cepages nobles".
Almost half of the Riesling vineyards worldwide are located in Germany. Riesling is the most important grape variety in German viticulture. We have almost 150 synonyms, the most common being Weisser Riesling or Rhein-Riesling.
Riesling is also widespread in northern Italy. Here he is called Riesling Renano. The best known come from South Tyrol, especially from the Vinschgau, the Eisack Valley and the upper Etsch Valley. Here it was introduced in the 19th century, mostly by winegrowers who had practiced in the Rheingau, on the Moselle or in the Wachau. There are currently around 100 hectares in South Tyrol. The Vinschgau Rieslings in particular can often compete with German or Austrian specimens, although the style is completely different.
RIESLING: EXCITING & FULL OF FINESSE
But the finesse of Riesling has always fascinated winegrowers. That is why there have been many attempts, even in warmer regions where the vine does not really feel comfortable, to ripen too early and produce fruity but rather irrelevant table wines. Really good Rieslings are rare in Italy, but in some regions exciting wines succeed, such as in Piedmont, Lombardy, Trentino and Veneto. A few even in Tuscany. In total, however, there are only just over 600 hectares throughout Italy.
The Riesling Italico is by the way not related to the Rhein-Riesling, but a variation of the Austrian Welschriesling.
It is said that no other grape variety can bring the terroir so well into the glass. However, this is only possible if Riesling can reach a long vegetation period. So in cool regions, on barren steep slopes, slate or primary rock soils. Often all other grape varieties are fermenting long before the Riesling harvest even begins. Reading dates in November are nothing special.
No other white variety produces so many different wine styles and always retains its characteristics. The secret is the balanced interplay of fruit, minerality and the unique spicy acidity, paired - depending on the origin - with an elegant filigree structure and powerful spice.
CONVINCING MATURING POTENTIAL
While in Italy and Austria Riesling is almost always dry as a bone, there is quite a range in Germany. From dry Grosse Gewächsen to the typical "Möselchen", low-alcohol, residual sweet Kabinett Rieslings, to noble sweet Prädikatswein, such as Beerenauslesen or Trockenbeerenauslesen. Even the sweetest Riesling varieties have this piquant acid structure that makes them so popular. Because Riesling also ripens excellently. Even for decades.
Riesling probably originated from a natural crossing of wild vines with a Traminer clone, which in turn crossed with the Heunisch. The origin is assumed to be on the Rhine, where it was already mentioned in documents in the 15th century, hence the name. A descent from Alsace, where a Rüsseling was mentioned, is just as incredible as a derivation from a village in the Wachau called Ritzling. SUPERIORE.DE
