Those floral notes came forth with increased intensity and clarity in the bottle that had been opened longer. The bouquet continues to surprise with touches of black fruit and freshly milled white pepper. However, like many wines from Serralunga d’Alba, this expression from Lazzarito reveals a pretty inner paradox. "Starting off a bit shy and closed at first, the 2015 Barolo Ravera showed noticeably better in the sample that had been opened a few hours prior to my arrival at the winery for my annual visit. This makes perfect sense as Vietti’s wines are intentionally slow at first but are built to endure the long haul. From the Novello township, this vineyard site is recognized for it power, structure and the uniquely broad approach it shows to the palate. There is a larger span of black fruit at its core. The positioning of the Ravera cru means it is open to the elements and the cold air from the Alps, and the wines result in freshness and mineral character as well. If one were to assign a quality to this wine, it would be sincerity. In the sum of its parts, this disarming Super Riserva is not only a wine full of contrasts, but also full of soul. "Romitorio's Riserva is a selection of the Chia family's four oldest plots, planted in 1987 with local Sangiovese clones sourced from Biondi-Santi and Soldera cuttings. This gives a sense of the estate's relatively cool, northwest-facing vineyards and surrounding woodlands. It is rather discreet and needs coaxing to elicit its appealing hints of red berries, grilled herb, porcini mushroom and forest floor. It's full but bright, with upfront tangy acidity and red currant and sour cherry notes, with fresh mint emerging on the backend. The tannins are fine and silky, making for a sophisticated sip." Barolo “Falletto” DOCG 2017 · 6 bottles in OWC
The Barolo Falletto from the hillside of the same name in Serralunga, where the winery is also located, has a wonderfully complex and racy personality. It impresses with the intensity of its dark fruit and the excellent overall balance that can only be found in this coveted site. The 2017 vintage has allowed a complex, fruit-driven Falletto to mature, with a spectrum ranging from small dark berries, menthol, flowers and liquorice to a tannin that is present yet trimmed for consistent elegance. It is a particularly precise and direct Barolo without being loud. However, its full character, aromatic diversity and delicacy will only really come to the fore with further bottle ageing. Barolo Cannubi San Lorenzo DOCG 2012 · MAGNUM in OWC
Michele described his absolute top wine to us during his lifetime as follows: "Cannubi San Lorenzo is the highest part of the Cannubi hill and we own its summit. This plot is characterised by its tiny size: facing east-south-east, it is barely a fifth of a hectare and is cultivated in the same way as our ancestors - without any mechanical help. We harvest just a few precious grapes from these rows of ancient vines, press them and leave the results to mature in large bottles for at least ten years. In the glass, the wine displays an extraordinary complexity: the aroma is refined, almost kaleidoscopic, punctuated by notes of spices and orange; in the mouth, it is delicate and classic. It connects the experienced connoisseur with the land of the Langa. And once it's in the glass, it's like looking through a keyhole, with each further sip there is so much more to discover. "Dried flowers, potpourri nuances on the nose - so aromatic and perfumed. Dried fruits, cherries and cranberries, but also baked and stewed red berry fruits and fresh red cherries alongside caramel, coffee and dark chocolate. This round, supple and lively wine is delightful from the first sip, with a lovely sweet, almost tart cherry acidity and juicy strawberry flavours. Creamy, chalky, docile and full-bodied, it's a veritable cornucopia of flavour and texture. The supremely potent Rocche di Castiglione is often referred to as the first "official" cru in the history of Langa (along with Bussia di Prunotto, both of which were released with the 1961 vintage). Dark fruits, pressed lilac, blood orange, powdered liquorice, balsamic herbs, spices, iron ore and aniseed fit together perfectly like pieces of a puzzle. "An expression of elegance in Serralunga", Luca Currado underlines at the tasting of Lazzarito, and we already agree with him on the nose. Gravel, pebbles, red fruits, rose petals, lavender and sage permeate this plastic and very lively Serralunga Barolo. Baroli from Serralunga d'Alba are often in a category of their own thanks to their richness and sheer abundance of fruit. The balsamic symphony opens the doors to a sip that is undoubtedly powerful, but at the same time refreshing and rich in vitamins. With added aeration, Lazzarito delivers mint and balsamic herbs. Lazzarito sets the pace and never loses its rhythm, the great texture of the tannins flanks this palate spectacle in an ideal way and we will discover much more about this great Barolo in the years to come. "The 2018 Barolo Lazzarito represents Vietti's interpretation of Serralunga d'Alba, the village often associated with the appellation's most powerful wines. The Lazzarito completes its second fermentation in barrique over three months and is then transferred to large oak bottles where it ages for a further two years. With around 8,000 bottles produced in this smaller vintage, the wine is very indicative of its geographical origin with dense black fruit, rusty nail, blood orange and earth. Luca Currado cultivates the Brunate Cru on the La Morra side of the vineyard (opposite the Barolo side) and this wine contains fruit from new plots. It convinces with an impressive aroma of red berries, cherries, wild herbs, mint, minerals and rose petals, rounded off by a hint of blood orange. On the palate we find a terrific softness and textural silkiness, this continues with hints of mint, liquorice and camphor ash for many minutes.
