The Slow Wine guide, first published in 2010, emerged from the Slow Food movement after they parted ways with the Gambero Rosso publishing house. The well-known Italian wine critics Giancarlo Gariglio and Fabio Giavedoni were able to recruit around 200 experienced tasters for their new project.
The success after more than 10 years proves the editors right, because in all regions of Italy, winegrowers have committed themselves to the Slow Food philosophy and produce their wines mindfully and sustainably in harmony with nature and with the claim to present the territorial identity in their products.
For the current 2023 edition, 1,957 wineries were visited and evaluated, 56 % of which practice certified organic or biodynamic farming. 63 % of the award-winning wines are produced according to organic or biodynamic methods. This year, an impressive 24,500 wines were presented to the sensitive palates of the 200 tasters, among which 787 top wines with an excellent organoleptic profile received special attention. The "Vino Slow" award was given to 386 wines, which present the identity of their homeland in a special way and are vinified by winegrowers who completely renounce herbicides. The category "Everyday Wines" is filled by 156 wines, which are available in specialised shops for a maximum of 12 EUR thanks to a particularly attractive price-performance ratio.
In our opinion, it is definitely worthwhile to browse off the beaten track of the big critics and discover new winemakers and wines that are not only a lot of fun, but also worth every penny. We have therefore gladly compiled the wines of this very likeable guide, which were awarded according to these critical selection criteria, for you on our pages. SUPERIORE.DE
