Tenuta Tignanello is located in the heart of Chianti Classico on the gentle hills between the valleys of the Greve and Pesa rivers and comprises 319 hectares of land, of which around 130 are planted with vines. The estate's vineyards include two jewels: Tignanello and Solaia, which are located on the same hill, on calcareous and schistose marl soils of marine origin from the Pliocene, and which benefit from warm days and fresh nights during the growing season. Two wines are produced from these vineyards, which many years ago had the potential to become the starting point of the Italian wine renaissance. Nothing has changed to this day.

Tignanello is more classic than ever in the excellent year 2021. The tried-and-tested blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc comes to the fore with impressive clarity and attention to detail. The fruitiness of the wine is perfectly controlled and polished, there is no exaggeration, no excesses and no loose ends. The result is precise and sophisticated, especially considering the handling of the tannins (aged for up to 17 months in new and used Hungarian and French oak) and the quality of the elegant mouthfeel. "This legendary Italian wine, which was first produced in 1971, is now celebrating its 50th birthday. Happy birthday, Tignanello! The Marchesi Antinori 2021 Tignanello (made from 79% Sangiovese, 13% Cabernet Sauvignon and 8% Cabernet Franc) makes everyone's heart beat faster. The wine shows a thoroughly pretty flavour profile with aromas of tart fruit, redcurrants, tea leaves, roses, crushed white pepper, liquorice, nutmeg, cloves and chopped mint. It opens slowly to reveal more richness and exuberance over time, becoming downright lush and intoxicating a short time later. However, the through-line remains the bright freshness and minerality of the Sangiovese. Compared to the 2018 vintage (which I also liked very much), this vintage has more fruit weight and volume overall." Wine Advocate

The Vigna del Sorbo vineyard is located directly in front of the winery in the municipality of Panzano. The south-west facing vineyard with Galestro soils covers 8 hectares at an altitude of 450 metres. The Riserva was first produced in 1985 and has been labelled Gran Selezione since the 2010 vintage.

This organically grown Sangiovese from a single vineyard is characterised by its impeccable balance, purity and beautiful intensity. Fresh on the nose with aromas of red cherries and lemon thyme. Vigna del Sorbo has a pronounced fruitiness on the palate, which contrasts beautifully with the spicy and tobacco-like notes. This is closely followed by a lovely acidic note, salty tannins, great compactness and spiciness. All of this, together with the supple and delicately sweet tannins, makes this Gran Selezione an unforgettable exceptional wine full of vigour and elegance in this vintage too! SUPERIORE.DE

"The 2021 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Panzano Vigna del Sorbo is somewhat more delicate, even subdued, compared to its new brother, the more opulent Terrazze San Leonlino. Aromatically, the Vigna del Sorbo is a little more self-centred, but shows just enough complexity and beauty to believe in its future ageing potential. Even now, tasted so young, the wine's pedigree is evident. It is characterised by its complexity and depth. The tannins are velvety soft, and gentle mineral flavours give it a special note. "Bright ruby red with bright orange reflections. In the nose wild mushrooms, black and even some white truffle, plus rosehip tea, red currant and blackberry. Freshly ground pepper and crushed juniper provide spice and plenty of ethereal aromas. Clear, bright and precise on the palate. The fruit comes out much more clearly now. Totally juicy and fortunately flanked again and again by the acid structure. Invigorating, animating to drink and slender. The fruit now appears small-berried and positively acidic on the palate. The initially earthy aromas only have a subordinate effect in the finish. The show clearly belongs to sour cherry, lovage and blackberry. "Roagna has its modern winery, with most of the structure underground, at the foot of the Castiglione Falletto village at the center of the appellation. Made with fruit grown around the corner, the 2017 Barolo Rocche di Castiglione (with 2,680 bottles released) offers a sharp and linear presentation with crisp berry fruit, crushed stone, rose and licorice root. This is one of the most expressive vineyard sites in the appellation, I find. The vivacious Chiara Boschis has been a rather modernist Barolo winemaker for over 25 years, although she now uses much less new oak than in the past. She is best known for her Cannubi, but her Mosconi, from 1 ha of this top vineyard in Monforte d'Alba, can be just as good in some vintages.

Medium to deep crimson. Very nice nose of earthy, complex cherry and blackberry fruit with subtle oak notes and a hint of pine. On the palate juicy and smooth red fruit, very concentrated. Delicious, crisp tannins. It is a plump, full-bodied and very concentrated wine that is assertive and youthful when young - but in balance. It is darker and fruitier than most classic Barolos, yet always structured, complex, tight and long. SUPERIORE.DE

"As with the 2017 vintage, Laura Brunelli will not be releasing a Riserva. Instead, the Olmo vineyard, which typically forms the backbone of the Riserva, is a key component in this Annata Brunello, making a beautiful and complete wine. Mint, lavender and fennel lead on the nose, while sweet, juicy persimmon and crisp pomegranate form the backdrop on the palate, and the chalky tannins are quite insidious in their grip. "Paying homage to founder Pacenti Siro, PS is sourced from a 1.5-hectare plot which he planted in the early 1970s. Suitably restrained, it takes its time to open. Initial roasted, grilled notes speak to ageing in 100% new French oak barriques, but there is plenty more as it unfolds: sage, fennel and fragrant florals poke through. The palate is polished, sophisticated and buoyed by racy Sangiovese acidity. The tannins are chalky, almost clayey, as they cling to the palate, and it finishes with a stony, mineral-like sensation. The already very well-balanced and classic 2018 vintage can gain again with Fuligni, because no Riserva was produced. Ruby red with orange reflections. On the nose, after some aeration, ripe morello cherries, violets, roses and lots of Mediterranean scrub. Powerful on the palate, the silky tannins give it elegance and the necessary balance, its complexity comes to the fore with every sip. This very authentic and strongly focused Brunello can be counted among the best of the vintage, its wonderfully balanced proportions and its juiciness will give it further impetus in the coming years. The 2018 is opulent but also has the acidity to keep it balanced, as it finishes long with classically refined tannins but leaves the palate perfectly poised for another sip. This is the top wine from Il Poggione, and it is a must for anyone who collects wines from this famous vineyard. The estate's oldest parcel, Vigna Paganelli, is a 12-hectare vineyard that was planted back in 1964. It has a rich variety of old Sangiovese clones, which are used for the newer plantings.

The bouquet is characterised by generous notes of spiced plums, cured leather and hints of marjoram, tarragon and basil. Despite its size, it carries its volume with charming lightness. The fruit is rich and sweet, while ripe, grainy tannins form a framework. Beneath all these layers, a mineral note emerges. You get everything here, including the unmistakable power and richness of Brunello, which are not easy to achieve with such careful balance. The finish is structured, fresh and long, and the longer it lingers in the glass, the more pronounced the leathery and spicy flavours become.
