“Supèra” Verdicchio di Matelica DOC 2023
The Garofoli winery is a true winemaking jewel from the Italian Marche region and is known for its terrificVerdicchio from the Castello di Jesi DOC. And so it is no surprise that the family business is now also showing what it can do in the Matelica DOC. This is where some of the best wines of their kind come from, mostly from the higher vineyards: complex, mineral, fresh and long-lasting.
Bright straw yellow with green reflections. Intense aroma of meadow flowers and white stone fruit on the nose. Beautifully balanced acidity on the palate, mineral and with fine citrus notes, salty on the finish. Supèra is an interpretation of Matelica in the style of Garofoli - with a combination of tropical flavours and the austere minerality so typical of the region. Great, and not just because of the attractive price. SUPERIORE.DE

Verdicchio di Matelica DOC 2023
Italy connoisseur and wine critic Ian D'Agata writes about the grape variety in his book "Native Wine Grapes of Italy": "Verdicchio is arguably Italy's greatest indigenous white grape variety. This statement may come as a surprise to those who have only tasted neutral or watery Verdicchio wines, sometimes even bottled in incredible amphora-shaped bottles."
Light straw green in colour. Clean and fresh on the nose, lively and lively on the palate with an almost laser-like precision in the flavours of citrus fruits, herbs, almonds, mussels and crushed gravel. Its sweet and sour note makes the wine even more appealing and gives it an air of "drink me now". Everything here is in perfect balance and has a natural tension. Even Bisci's base wine, aged for 7 months on the fine lees, impressively demonstrates the great class of the winery. SUPERIORE.DE

“Misco” Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico Superiore DOC 2022
Misco, the estate's second top white product and a Verdicchio matured in stainless steel, exudes an elegant bouquet of floral and aniseed notes. "The 2022 Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico Superiore Misco is intense, with hints of chalk dust and dried flowers that dissolve to reveal yellow apples and ginger spice. It is pleasantly round and enveloping, with an oily note that lingers over the palate with a wave of lime-flavoured nectarines. The 2022 finishes crisp and concentrated, leaving a hint of minerality and herbs." Vinous

“Podium 30 anni” Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico Superiore DOC 2021
The Verdicchio Podium has a strong personality with its aroma of citrus fruits, broom and lime blossom, tropical fruits and almonds. The flavour is perfectly structured, balanced and dynamic in its various components, spicy, mineral and with an unbeatably harmonious, spicy finish. SUPERIORE.DE
"Pale straw yellow with green-gold nuances. Salty, mineral bouquet with notes of salt lemon, almond blossom and a touch of fumé. Silky texture on the palate, with tart fruit, very juicy and a subtle mineral finish." Falstaff
"The Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Podium 2021 is delicate and restrained, it needs to be coaxed to reveal its pretty bouquet of young peach, raw almond and sweet smoke. It is elegant, with a silky texture and admirable weight, but retains its wonderful energy. Fresh acidity and saline minerals enliven its rich, ripe nectarine and pear centre. The 2021 finishes long and colourful, leaving a youthful tension as vanilla custard and candied citrus fade away. Even though it is very pleasant to drink today, this is a vintage for the cellar. It's worth noting that the Podium is made without oak, just stainless steel and cement, so we taste the pure fruit." Vinous

“Serra Fiorese” Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico Riserva DOC 2021
Garofoli's Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Riserva Serra Fiorese is initially rather restrained in the glass with delicate nuances of yellow flowers, peach skin and a hint of spices. It is then powerful on the palate with rich peach and nectarine notes accompanied by zesty citrus fruit. It leaves an aftertaste of tension and whets the appetite for more with its salty minerality and a hint of baked apple that lingers for a long time. The Serra Fiorese, vinified in small batches, is a barrel-matured and fermented Verdicchio that needs to be given a certain amount of time to experience its undisputed greatness, and then it is great! “Vigneto Fogliano” Verdicchio di Matelica DOC 2021 (BIO)
The quality of Italian white wines has risen sharply in the last 20 years, and this also applies to Verdicchio. There are still quite a few bad old-fashioned wines, but the good ones can be a revelation. The region around Matelica in particular has made Verdicchio famous, as the best representatives of its type come from here - and mostly from the higher vineyards: complex, mineral, fresh and long-lasting.
Vigneto Fogliano is produced only in the best years from a careful selection of Verdicchio grapes from the best vineyard of the Biscis. On the nose, it presents green fruit with beautiful notes of honeydew melon and summer jasmine. Its deep, multi-layered flavours of apples, pears, fresh citrus fruits and a hint of menthol caress the palate creamily, before a salty minerality and fresh acidity take over and help the wine achieve a perfection that is second to none. Fogliano spends 18 months on the lees in a cement tank before being bottled in numbered bottles. In a nutshell, it is a great white wine! SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2021 Verdicchio di Matelica Fogliano is impossible to ignore with its captivating bouquet of lemon oil, tangerine, minty herbs and sweet smoke. It’s soothingly round with a pretty inner sweetness, displaying notes of nectarine and orange. Saline mineral tones add a tactile feel toward the close. The 2021 finishes wickedly fresh and perfumed, ending on a salty flourish. This is a remarkably pretty rendition of Fogliano that I can’t get enough of." Vinous

“Mirum” Verdicchio di Matelica Riserva DOCG 2020
Verdicchio Riserva in a rich, sensual style with plenty of dynamism in the glass. Ripe peaches, flowers, sweet herbs, orange peel and minerals in a complex yet typical varietal bouquet. First-class impressions on the palate and already easy to drink today, but with good potential for the coming years. SUPERIORE.DE
"Here is a pretty white wine that delivers on both fronts: aromatic complexity and mouthfeel. The Monacesca 2020 Verdicchio di Matelica Riserva Mirum sees fruit from a three-hectare site on heavier clay soils. This unoaked Riserva starts off with a decisively mineral-driven bouquet with dustings of crushed stone and powdered terracotta. A swell of primary fruit appears on second nose with candied lemon, Darjeeling tea and waxy fruit." Wine Advocate

“Misco” Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico Riserva DOC 2018
Tavignano's complex top product Misco Riserva represents the synthesis of the winery's Verdicchio expertise and is its most refined interpretation of the terroir. "Rich notes of baked apricot and toasted almond are enlivened by bright, lemony acidity, with hints of pink grapefruit zest and grated ginger to create a fine, focused interplay on the creamy palate of this vivid white. Milled white pepper, dried herbs and stony mineral notes linger on the mouthwatering finish." Wine Spectator
"Ripe and seductive with some phenols and a hint of honey on the nose and palate. Rich and round with good acidity and freshness. Impressive length and intensity." Decanter
"The Verdicchio dei Castello di Jesi Riserva Misco 2018 holds its power in reserve, displaying a delicate but layered and sweetly scented bouquet that blends white smoke with pretty flowers, chamomile, cardamom and melon. Its weighty, almost oily texture is balanced by a core of bright acidity, where lemon zest combines with green apple and a hint of ginger to create a satisfying and savoury experience. For all the depth and character the Riserva shows today, the best is yet to come. The finish is long and tense, but still leaves you wanting more, along with that textbook almond bitterness that goes on and on. Brava." Vinous

"The Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico Riserva Misco 2019 is wonderfully perfumed and rich in the glass, with nuances of brown spices and hints of baked apples that give way to sweet floral tones. It also impresses with a silky, almost glycerine-like texture and a depth of ripe apples and pears that practically envelop the salty minerals that only emerge towards the end. "The certified organic Tenuta di Tavignano 2019 Castelli di Jesi Verdicchio Riserva Classico Misco is a wine with texture and medium fruit weight. The wine presents many yellow and golden fruits with a hint of saffron and dried ginger. It undergoes partial malolactic fermentation to achieve the extra creaminess that is particularly noticeable in this beautiful vintage. Production is limited to 3,500 bottles." Wine Advocate

“Historical Vecchie Vigne” Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico Superiore DOC 2019 (BIO)
"Historical is Umani Ronchi's highly ambitious project, created thanks to its profound knowledge of the region and the terroir, on a small, remote plot in the historic vineyards of Montecarotto in the Castelli di Jesi Classico area. The Historical Vecchie Vigne is an extreme selection that is refined for five years (including 18 months on the fine lees) before being released onto the market - with the claim of being one of the greatest white cru in Italy and the world." Michele und Massimo Bernetti
Straw yellow in colour with light green reflections. Deep and multi-faceted on the nose, oscillating dynamically between fresh citrus notes, candle wax and floral nuances. Energetic and captivating on the palate, yet deep and almost mysterious. This top-class Verdicchio Riserva only reveals its true finesse, salinity and terrific depth and length with further aeration and tempering (approx. 12-14°C). Grandiose. SUPERIORE.DE
"A lovely, expressive white in a lush, leesy style, this is well-balanced and trimmed nicely by sleek, mouthwatering acidity. Shows flavors of creamed melon, poached peach and lemon curd, plus hints of beeswax, chamomile and warm spices that expand on the palate. A tangy streak of salinity drives the finish." Wine Spectator
"This is a serious verdicchio that should remind you of the potential of the grape. Lemon zest, fennel, minerals and a touch of beeswax. Intense, naturally concentrated and very fresh, yet sleek and textured, with edgy minerality and salinity stretching to the finish. Long and pure." James Suckling

South of Rimini and the small state of San Marino, not far from the port city of Ancona, one of Italy's most exciting and versatile white grape varieties can be found: Verdicchio (pronounced: werdik-jo) from the Marche. Some might be familiar with this wine because of the characteristic green amphora bottle that exploded around the world from the 1960s onwards - and, as is unfortunately so often the case, at the expense of overall quality. The once tasteless industrial wine is fortunately history.
More sustainable cultivation methods and the selection of the right sites are just some of the reasons that freed Verdicchio from its image crisis and helped it achieve a remarkable leap in quality. Because of it, the wine production of the Marche region is no longer inferior to its more famous neighbours, such as Tuscany, Emilia-Romagna, Umbria, Lazio and Abruzzo.
The remarkable green grape colour that Verdicchio takes on even when fully ripe gives the ancient variety its name. It is traded as a descendant of the Italian grape variety family Greco-Trebbiano, especially since genetic analyses proved a remarkable similarity between Verdicchio and the Venetian grape variety Trebbiano di Soave. It is very likely that the variety was introduced to the Marche region by settlers from the Veneto towards the end of the 15th century.
Verdicchio is also popular in other Italian regions, although there is no doubt that the one from the central Italian region is the best. The largest growing zone is the 2,700-hectare DOC Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi, located in the northern centre of the Marche. The high clay content and skeletal deposits in the soil here produce semi-aromatic grapes that are ideally suited to the production of still, sparkling and sweet wines.
Further west, the influence of the Apennine mountains comes to the fore in the racy wines of the small Verdicchio di Matelica DOC appellation, which covers only 300 hectares. It is located further inland in the region and is characterised by higher vineyard sites and more mineral-rich soils. It is important to understand at this point that the wines from the two aforementioned DOCs within the Marche differ significantly from each other, although they must both be made from at least 85% Verdicchio grapes. A wine from the DOC Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi tends to have delicate fruity, floral notes and a ripe character with less acidity due to its proximity to the sea. However, if the taste is to go in the direction of structured, firm, mineral-intensive wines with higher acidity, then the Verdicchio from Matelica is certainly the more exciting choice. The typical almond note is the only thing that almost all producers can agree on. In young wines, the almond note usually tastes a little more bitter, while it becomes increasingly sweeter with age. Because of its pronounced herbal aromas, salty minerality and unique fruity notes, Verdicchio should therefore not only be drunk young. It is one of the few white wines in Italy that is designated as a Riserva wine after at least 18 months of ageing with the DOCG classification of the aforementioned appellations - so it is no wonder that it is also loved by those who otherwise prefer red wines.
We wonder when more wine drinkers will finally discover Verdicchio? Finding it on a wine list is not a matter of course. All the better that we have some great Verdicchio wines in our warehouse. SUPERIORE.DE
