Siepi is developing more and more into a cult wine that can easily keep up with the very big reds of Tuscany. The 2018 edition presents itself powerful and very nicely centred, here all elements fit together perfectly. Ripe dark berry fruit, forest floor and roasted almonds. Intense and powerful on the palate with complex and layered hints of plum, tobacco and forest floor. In 2018, however, the time in barrel was reduced to just 30 months to preserve the freshness and elegance of the vintage, and this really comes through in the wine. With a little coaxing, it emerges from its reductive cocoon to reveal nuances of chestnut and flint before blossoming with thyme and lavender. "The 2018 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva from Poggio di Sotto was restrained when I tasted it, probably due to a certain awkwardness in such a young sample. This bottle should be given more time, as tasted now, it was definitely poured before its prime. The bouquet begins with austere aromas of oil paintings or waxed antiques, but these quickly fade. An exciting composition of redcurrants, cherry peel, rose petals and floral potpourri then unfolds. Parussi is the most open-hearted and fruity Barolo in Massolino's 2019 collection. It has a striking immediacy and sweetness in the mid-palate. Juicy red and purple berries, spices and mint combine in the glass. On the palate, Parussi is silky, floral and medium-bodied, displaying all the sensuality typical of Castiglione Falletto's Barolos. "The 2017 Scrio, Le Macchiole's Syrah, is fabulous. As always, Scrio is more a wine of the estate than a varietal expression of Syrah. That is obvious. Even so, the wine's density, persistence and overall complexity make it compelling. Time in the glass brings out hints of cedar, smoke, sweet pipe tobacco and rose petal to play off a core of vibrant red Syrah fruit. I would give the 2017 a few years for the aromatics to develop. "The Le Macchiole 2017 Scrio is a pure expression of Syrah that shows more similarities to the variety when grown in France than it does California, Australia or even the rest of Tuscany for that matter. Instead of the peppery charred meat or barbecued aromas you often get in New World Syrah, this wine points to blackberry, some black olive, rum cake, crème de cassis or chocolate-covered cherries. Although the wine is varietally pure, it doesn't really scream Syrah in any sort of obvious or banal manner. The tannins are more gripping in this hot vintage, and the wine spreads over the palate with a creamy, almost waxy texture that is enduring and deep." Wine Advocate

The supremely potent Rocche di Castiglione is often referred to as the first "official" cru in the history of Langa (along with Bussia di Prunotto, both of which were released with the 1961 vintage). It confirms itself once again as the great classic of the house with the 2018 edition. Dark fruits, pressed lilac, blood orange, powdered liquorice, balsamic herbs, spices, iron ore and aniseed fit together perfectly like pieces of a puzzle. The Vietti 2018 Barolo Rocche di Castiglione is beautifully etched and sharp with a particularly delineated quality that is unusual in this vintage. The fruit comes from a small parcel of 8,000 square metres and, like the other wines in this Cru series from Vietti, it is aged for two years in oak barrels. The second novelty of the 2018 vintage is Vietti's Barolo Monvigliero. The special feature: Approx. 60% of the grapes are not destemmed, which enhances the aromatic nuances of the wine. Youthful notes of raspberry and blueberry are flanked by black pepper, gentian, porcelain and black olives. The palate has a beguilingly soft texture, fine and creamy, underpinned by wonderful laurel and floral aromas. Monvigliero impresses with its purity, its serenity and its class. Excellent. The Vigna del Sorbo vineyard is located directly in front of the winery. The south-west facing vineyard with Galestro soils covers 8 hectares at an altitude of 450 metres. The Riserva was first produced in 1985 and has been labelled Gran Selezione since the 2010 vintage.

Dark ruby red with light red highlights. Deep and initially unfathomable on the nose. But any spirit of discovery will be enchanted when it opens slowly and very balanced with red cherries, redcurrants, earth, sage and liquorice, revealing more facets with each passing minute. Finally, the mouthfeel shows a similar degree of extreme flavour balance with very fine but still young tannins. This medium-bodied structure, coupled with the wine's natural acidity, is an important guarantee of its great longevity. This is not at all the case with the 2020, a wine that will need many more years to show its best side. With time, hints of lavender, dried herbs, plums and graphite emerge, but the 2020 is clearly a child. There is a sense of youthful austerity (in a positive sense) that I find very appealing. "The 2016 vintage was characterised by a mild and dry winter, a cool spring and a summer with well-distributed rainfall. Summer temperatures were not very high and ensured a slow and complete ripening of the grapes. Grapes were harvested on 29 September. 'The vintage was deemed worthy of being sealed in numbered bottles,' said Corrado Maurigi, estate manager. The wine is extremely youthful with a vinous, violet character. Vibrant red cherry fruit dominates over a balsamic whiff, with a floral bouquet in the background. Siepi 2020 impresses even at a young age with its volume, fruit and richness. It is made from equal parts Merlot and Sangiovese and both grapes bring their best qualities to the blend. The Sangiovese grape shows a distinct personality with localised notes of small berries and spices and also offers a wonderfully fresh acidity. Merlot plays a strong role in the background, adding softness, fullness and richness. Siepi is an intense, powerful wine that has a terrificarc of tension, ranging from its highly attractive extract sweetness to polished tannins in a fresh, savoury finish with an interesting salty note.
