Valpolicella DOC 2022
Brigaldara's Valpolicella is mainly made from Corvina and Corvinone grapes. The timing of the harvest is very important for this wine, so that its flavours are very delicate and its sensory balance is influenced by the precisely measured acidity. It expresses the characteristic flavours of the valley: from cherries to spicy notes, which are more or less pronounced depending on the vintage. Its beautiful and radiant balance is achieved by a short maturation in steel, which perfectly enhances its sensory characteristics. SUPERIORE.DE
"This wine is a classic example of Valpolicella with aromas of fresh raspberries and dried cranberries mixed with thyme, sage and forest floor leading to a lively palate. Driven by sour cherries, the palate is indulgent and generous, and the more it opens up, the more spicy and floral notes add complexity." Wine Enthusiast
"The 2022 Valpolicella is wonderfully fresh, with a gorgeous blend of violets and roses giving way to muddled blackberries and an air of crushed chalk. Incredibly pure, this flows across the palate with a juicy wave of ripe wild berry fruits. It finishes crisp, with a tart cranberry concentration and inner florals that linger on." Vinous

Valpolicella DOC 2022
This traditional cuvée is already inspiring in its youth. Made from outstanding grapes, you can taste the ripe fruit and richness of the three classic vineyards. Deep ruby-garnet colour with violet reflections. Full bouquet of ripe cherries, some plum, herbs and orange zest. Juicy and complex on the finish, very long finish with a fine salt vein and subtle fruit sweetness. Drinkable! SUPERIORE.DE
"The nose of this fresh Valpolicella is characterised by pretty and superficially fresh floral notes, followed by tangy notes of red berries and a hint of tobacco. On the palate, fresh cherries, mixed herbs and undergrowth - all well balanced - give the wine a lightness and at the same time a complexity that keeps you coming back for more." Wine Enthusiast
"The 2022 Valpolicella Classico exudes a sweet bouquet of dusty violets and roses that fades into spiced confectionery and crushed cherries. It is juicy, with crunchy wild berries and minty herbal notes accelerated by a juicy acidity. The finish is long and perfumed, with a layer of soft tannin giving it a lovely punctuation. The 2022 is a beautiful, refined Valpolicella." Vinous
"A classic blend from a dry vintage, among the driest on record, competing with 2003. Yet the ripeness is beautifully balanced by an underlying freshness due to savvy canopy management. Sappy red to dark fruit allusions, fennel seeds and violets. The tannins, a gritty sheath of cocoa powder with a fleck of leafiness. Despite the juicy mid-weighted feel, this boasts a winning freshness. Poised, versatile and very easy to drink. A very good classico." James Suckling

Valpolicella Superiore Ripasso DOC 2021
Brigaldara's Ripasso is created by the secondary fermentation of Valpolicella wine on the pomace of Amarone della Valpolicella. The contact between the Valpolicella wine and the Amarone marc, which is still rich in sugar, triggers a new fermentation. Bright ruby red colour. Bright and cheerful with aromas reminiscent of dried cherry, plum, pear and apricot. This wine shows plenty of bright fruit definition with subtle hints of tobacco, spice and rose petal. The finish is smooth, polished and soft in tannin structure. Very structured and balanced, gaining complexity with further bottle ageing. SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2021 Valpolicella Superiore Ripasso impresses with its remarkable freshness, as steeped plums come together with sweet spices, wildflowers and tangerine zest. This is surprisingly juicy and lifted in style yet still quite deep, with masses of tart wild berry fruits and saline mineral tones guided by bright acidity. It tapers off with a lively tension and a tart orange twist that keeps the mouth watering for more. This is a gorgeous Ripasso that finishes at just 0.6 grams-per-liter of residual sugar." Vinous

“Il Bianco From Black to White” Veneto IGT 2020
There are no fixed rules at Zýmē, only the pursuit of experimentation to offer a unique and honest experience that also conveys the character of each individual vintage. Il Bianco From Black to White (sealed with a glass cork) opens with a golden colour and a whitish sheen typical of grapes that have no skin contact. The predominant grape variety is Rondinella Bianca, a mutation that was only discovered by chance in the vineyards of Zýmē and is unique in Italy.
The fresh bouquet has aromas of citrus fruits, honeydew melon, star jasmine and sour grapefruit. The palate is uniquely different, but silky and very flavoursome with a medium body, while ripe apples and nectarines are stimulated by juicy acidity and a hint of green citrus fruit. The tension builds with each successive glass, a slightly tropical note is added in the final, together with salty minerals and lingering spice, From Black to White also clearly expresses its deserved place in Celestino Gaspari's exceptional portfolio, because it is a white gem full of character and purity! SUPERIORE.DE
"Rich straw yellow with green reflections. Seductive, intense aroma of mandarins and jasmine on the nose, with some rose and elderflower in the background. Clear and precise on the palate, harmonious, animating, well-integrated acidity, some fleur de sal on the lingering final." Falstaff
"The 2020 Il Bianco From Black to White wafts up, sweetly floral with candied citrus, raw almond and vanilla bean. It soothes with a soft textural wave of ripe orchard fruits as lime zest adds a reverberation of tension. The 2020 tapers off spicy and crisp, leaving cooling mineral tones and an almost crunchy sensation. Always unique and consistently one of the best values from the Zymé portfolio." Vinous
"Lime and lemon peel on the nose, with notes of white flowers and wet stones. Medium-bodied with plenty of fresh flavour extension and good length. A very flavoursome white this year." James Suckling

“Case Vecie” Valpolicella Superiore DOC 2021
Valpolicella Superiore Case Vecie is made mainly from Corvina and Corvinone grapes. It takes its name from the vineyard of the same name in Grezzana, where the ripening of the grapes is subject to strong temperature fluctuations between day and night: a climatic peculiarity that gives the wine a special spiciness on the nose and a completely unique polyphenol profile. Bright ruby red in colour with notes of cherries, vanilla and spices. Beautiful fruit and acidity on the palate, wonderfully balanced body. Juicy and long. SUPERIORE.DE
"Medium carmine red colour. A little Amarone-like with dried dark cherries, as if it had walked over the skins of Amarone. A hint of dried fruit. Peppery and with a hint of oak. No doubt, we are in Valpolicella. Smooth and generous without being heavy. Such a pleasant wine." Jancis Robinson
"The Valpolicella Superiore Case Vecie 2021 is particularly floral and airy, with a lively bouquet of dusty roses, dried strawberries and a hint of sour orange. It is a paragon of purity, with crisp red berry fruit and tactile mineral notes accompanied by juicy acidity. The 2021 finishes incredibly fresh, revealing a pleasant, crisp tannin as the tart cherry notes slowly fade away. The Valpolicella Superiore Case Vecie from a single vineyard is simply stunning and is produced without the appassimento process." Vinous
"This producer is one of the best of the region, opting for a more traditional approach. This ups the ante. Exotic notes of orange peel, cloves, tamarind, cardamom and sweet red currants, with some hints of partially dehydrated grapes. Good, sappy length." James Suckling
"This Valpolicella rises from the glass with fresh aromas of wild cherries and red plums that give way to violets, rosemary and fresh earth. The palate is bright with ripe red berries, allspice, vanilla, black tea and sweet and savoury spices, finishing with an electric acidity that refreshes the palate after every sip." Wine Enthusiast

“Staforte” Soave Classico DOC 2021 (BIO)
"This wine was born as a challenge. In 2004, when we started making it, ageing it in steel was against the general trend of ageing complex Soave wines in barrique. Today we are glad that we took this risk." Graziano Prà
The grapes for the Staforte come from the core zone of the Soave Classico, which is a pure expression of the mineral soil on which the vines grow. Apricot, peach and crisp golden apple mingle with notes of dried camomile and white flowers. Deep and full-bodied on the palate, very taut, with mineral finesse, fine acidity and creaminess through to a long, impressive final. SUPERIORE.DE
"White peach and peach skin flavours transition into a medium-bodied palate with minerals from gravel in the mid-palate. Crisp, fruity and mineral finish with decent length." James Suckling
"A bright, zesty white, with lively hints of grapefruit zest and milled white pepper accenting peach, lentil and mineral notes. Lingering, creamy finish." Wine Spectator
"The Soave Classico Staforte 2021 seduces with a complex bouquet that combines exotic flowers and tropical citrus fruits with crushed green apples and a hint of mint. Silky smooth yet vibrantly fresh, it floods the palate with crunchy fruit and mineral notes carried by brilliant acidity. It finishes with enormous length, perfumed and energetic, leaving a lemony concentration that slowly fades away. The Staforte 2021 is already a pleasure to drink now, but it is also suitable for medium-term cellaring." Vinous

“Palazzotto” Cabernet Sauvignon Breganze DOC 2018
Palazzotto is the name of the two hectares of vineyard where only Cabernet Sauvignon is grown. Fausto Maculan vinifies a fine wine from these grapes. A pronounced, very multi-faceted bouquet of dark ripe fruit, cassis and nuances of fine spices and violets. The fruity flavour is full-bodied and soft, with a long finish. SUPERIORE.DE
"The Maculan 2018 Breganze Cabernet Sauvignon Palazzotto makes a bold statement thanks to inky dark fruit, thick ripeness and dense extraction with black fruit flavors framed by lots of sweet oak. This full-framed red has an almost exotic quality with teriyaki or barbecue spice." Wine Advocate
"The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Palazzotto is spicy in the glass: cedar and ground ginger give way to dusty roses and redcurrants. It is elegant yet refined, with creamy textures lifted by vibrant acidity, while a wave of mineral-tinged wild berry flavours lightly wash over the palate. The 2018 leaves a tart note of citrus and raspberry and subtle, grippy tannins that frame the wine without slowing its momentum. Although it is already showing very well now, this wonderfully balanced version of Palazzotto should improve even more with medium-term cellaring." Vinous
"Ripe dark fruit with notes of walnuts, cedar wood and spices. Some leafy flavour. Medium to full-bodied with lots of firm, creamy tannins and a deep core of ripe and crunchy dark fruit. Velvety and long-lasting, with a firm, spicy finish." James Suckling

“Clos Roareti” Rosso Veronese IGT 2020
The first year of production of the single-varietal Merlot Clos Roareti dates back to 2004. The grapes are harvested from the 2 hectare historic Rovereti vineyard in Negrar. In this 100-year-old vineyard, which is surrounded by equally old walls, Merlot has been cultivated since the 1990s and is perfectly adapted to the climate and the red clay soil. The palate is rich and full-bodied with complex and very aromatic notes. Maturation in oak barrels gives this wine its special flavour and certain opulence. SUPERIORE.DE
"Some dried berries, plums, baking spices, dark earth and peppercorn funk. Fluid and dense with some graininess on the palate, followed by a slightly gamey finish." James Suckling
"Sage and rosemary combine with wild blueberries and a hint of undergrowth when the 2020 Rosso Clos Roareti blossoms in the glass. On the palate, it is silky and supple, with mineral-tinged red and blue fruits accentuated by a hint of mocha towards the end. The finish is structured, long and lingers on balsamic herbs and tobacco." Vinous

“Maternigo” Valpolicella Superiore DOC 2020
An accessible, fruit-accentuated classic at a high level. A clear aroma of wild berries and flowers, with a mix of dark berry notes, fine spices and light tannins on the palate. Flavour and depth give this noble Valpolicella its wonderful drinking flow. SUPERIORE.DE
"Dark, bright ruby red with a fine, brightening rim. Intense on the nose, cranberry compote, juniper and leather on the finish. Silky texture on the palate, with lots of ripe fruit, slightly spicy and with well-integrated tannins, long presence." Falstaff
"Aromas of dried fruit and nuts follow through to a medium-bodied palate with a dense bead of bright fruit and fine, slightly drying tannins. Very direct and concentrated with good forward acidity. Give this wine a little more time for the tannins to resolve further." James Suckling
"The 2020 Valpolicella Superiore Maternigo is wickedly fresh and floral, wafting up with suggestions of violet and lavender before giving way to crushed blackberries. This is a soft-textured mix of savory and sweet, with saline minerals complicating its tart wild berry fruits. It tapers off with tension, leaving a pleasantly tense sensation and hints of sour orange that pucker the cheeks. Don’t be afraid to lose the 2020 Maternigo in the cellar for a number of years." “La Grola” Rosso Veronese IGT 2020
La Grola is the eponymous, historic vineyard where Corvina, the indigenous grape of Valpolicella, is believed to have originated. The replanting of the vineyard by Giovanni Allegrini triggered an agronomic revolution and laid the foundations for the success of this wine-growing region, which today stands for convincing, great red wines from north-east Italy.
Dense, dark ruby red in colour, very rich and powerful on the nose with notes of wild and overripe berries. The rich fullness of coffee to black cherries is underlined by present, pleasant tannins. SUPERIORE.DE
"Rich ruby colour with a dark core and fine garnet-red rim. Multi-layered bouquet of dark chocolate, cassis, underpinned by fine spice. Velvety texture on the palate, harmonious and round, concentrated fruit and pronounced length." Falstaff
"Bright cherry red. Quite a reticent nose but masses of flavour on the palate with attractive bitterness after dried cherry fruit and a hint of charcoal. Quite a bit of texture here and a chewy, long finish. I wouldn't recommend drinking it without food. It's quite a statement!" Jancis Robinson
"The 2020 La Grola shows ripe fruit, some herbal notes in the background, liquorice, tar and gentle spices. This simple red wine has a slightly wild side with fresh acidity and a whistling, clean finish. La Grola paints a more concentrated picture of Corvina, a grape usually used in traditional Amarone blends." Wine Advocate
"Dark, brooding and complex, the 2020 La Grola tantalises the imagination with notes of spiced blood orange, cloves, dark chocolate and dried black cherries. It has a soft texture and more verve than expected, with lively acidity and a wave of tart wild berries that slowly saturate. The wine finishes with tension, with a primary concentration of fine-grained tannins that linger. The 2020 is an intense La Grola that will require patience." Vinous
"An elegant red wine with fine tannins that blend seamlessly with the ripe flavours of black and red cherries. Accents of smoked tobacco, rosehip, cocoa powder and aniseed run through the fruit profile, and a subtle, mineral hint of fresh earth and iron lingers on the finish." Wine Spectator
"La Grola has been an integral part of the Allegrini family since 1989. This blend of 90% Corvina and 10% Oseleta opens with aromas of black plums, preserved black cherries, cloves, cinnamon, black pepper and violets. As the wine progresses, notes of cedar, cigar box and tobacco develop. On the palate, rich, black-coloured fruit dances with taut, well-structured tannins, while savoury and earthy notes add to the fascination." Wine Enthusiast
"A single vineyard whose fruit comes from a historically important site that is quite steep and calcareous and slopes down towards the Adige. No dried grapes. The tannins of the Oseleta are hard, firm and powerful on the attack. However, the mid-palate is round and energetic, softening any impression of stiffness as it expands aniseed, mint, leather varnish and dark, saturated berry fruit. This is a very good wine made for the cellar." James Suckling
"Podere La Grola, Sant'Ambrogio in Valpolicella, Corvina with a small proportion of Oseleta, which undergoes malolactic fermentation and matures in barriques. Liquorice, blackberry jam and lime on the nose, salty-sweet on the palate, with a fruity finish and slightly iodised final." Luca Gardini

“La Fabriseria” Valpolicella Classico Superiore DOC 2019
La Fabriseria comes across as an elegant, medium-bodied Amarone. Its intensity, tannin structure and density are hard to beat in this price range. Very juicy on the palate, full-bodied and soft, with notes of cherries, cardamom and cloves. And always with the elegant seriousness of the Tedeschi family's great flagship of the same name. SUPERIORE.DE
"Very deep ruby red colour. Spicy notes of white pepper and tobacco on the nose, with hints of coffee and small red fruits. Full-bodied and intense in the mouth, soft, with character, personality and pronounced tannins on the finish, lingers for a long time." Falstaff
"Vibrant and fresh aromas of wild cherry and sour plum give way to exotic purple flower aromas and tobacco on the nose. The palate pops with tart red fruit notes followed by a mix of sweet and savory spices finishing with a bright pop of acidity." Wine Enthusiast
"A dense nose of dried fruit, mainly plums and black berries, which opens up a little on the medium-bodied palate, but the fruit is still essentially wrapped in a cocoon of fine, slightly drying tannin. This wine clearly needs more time in bottle to develop, but it shows great promise. Try decanting it now, but best from 2024." James Suckling
"The 2019 Valpolicella Classico Superiore La Fabriseria has sweet cherry syrup or crème de cassis that transitions to a savory side with hints of spice and tarry smoke. The wine presents bright flavors and enough structure to pair next to a heavy meat ragù and homemade pasta." Wine Advocate
"This is a long-standing and favourite Tedeschi production. The 2019 Valpolicella Classico Superiore La Fabriseria has sweet cherry syrup or crème de cassis that fades into a savoury side with hints of spice and tarry smoke." Wine Advocate
"The Valpolicella Superiore La Fabriseria 2019 is a real delight on the nose, with an opulent blend of crushed black cherries complemented by cinnamon, cloves and cocoa. It is silky and supple, with a lively acidity that further enlivens the ripe red fruit and inner spice. The 2019 tapers off with amazing length but also freshness, leaving a subtle train of fine tannins as the raspberry and liquorice notes slowly fade. This is a real crowd favourite." Vinous
"From grapes left to slightly over-ripen on the vine, with a portion of the fruit left uncrushed for fermentation, it has a deep and perfumed blackcurrant aroma with noticeable tannic structure overlaid by incredibly smooth and plush fruit. Despite this, it's light on its feet and well balanced despite the 15.5% alcohol, lifted on the finish by a touch of balsam." Decanter

“Le Rive” Bianco Veronese IGT 2021 (BIO)
Le Rive is a single-varietal Garganega made from grapes harvested late from volcanic soils. On the nose, the aromas of citrus fruit, almonds and exotic fruit are impressive. Its flavour is soft and powerful, with a wonderful freshness right through to the long finish, combined with an ebb and flow of minerals. A wonderful and highly distinctive wine with which the three sisters have once again put themselves at the forefront of their region. SUPERIORE.DE
"The Garganega Le Rive 2021 is a real treat for the nose. A bouquet of honeyed flowers gives way to dried apricots and peaches, embellished by an enriching note of lemon custard. It opens with a balanced inner sweetness that reveals lush, ripe stone fruit and a hint of candied lemon layered over a silky texture. On the long and dramatic final, the 2021 remains coloured in its primary concentration on the palate, lingering with its citrus notes while the mouth demands more. Le Rive is certainly not shy, but the balance is fantastic. Make sure you keep a few bottles in the cellar." Vinous
"This silky white's ripe and juicy flavors of pineapple, melon and guava fruit are well-defined by sleek acidity, with a zesty thread of pink grapefruit peel and ground ginger. Hints of creamed almond and spun honey enrich the fruit profile, while the finish is long and minerally." Wine Spectator
"An 85-year-old parcel opposite Carbonare, harvested late and fermented in tonneaux. The resemblance to a fine white Burgundy is striking. Notes of tangerine, apricot kernel and camomile are underpinned by a racy, stony freshness. A brilliant wine that hints at sweetness but finishes dry, mineral and powerful. From organically grown grapes." James Suckling

“Leon” Durella Metodo Classico VSQ dosaggio zero
The Durella grapes for this sparkling wine produced using the Champagne method come from the volcanic soils of the Agno Valley. Brilliant, light straw yellow in colour with a fine, persistent perlage. Salty, fruity notes of citrus fruit and quince on the nose. Powerful and mouth-filling on the palate, lively with striking acidity and a wonderful, bone-dry finish. SUPERIORE.DE
"Energetic and vibrant from the moment the cork pops, this wine opens with citrus, stone fruit and fresh lily aromas. Bright, yet with a cream texture from the elegant perlage that helps the citrus oil, white peach and subtle mineral notes lift on the palate." Wine Enthusiast
"A grape variety with high acidity and optimum ripeness for such a creamy, sparkling and non-dosed sparkling wine. Also very good. Accents of vanilla apples and lemon blossom are brought to a good length by a persistent perlage and juicy acidity." James Suckling
"The Metodo Classico Durella Leon is airy and fresh with a spicy burst of ground ginger that fades into young peach and white smoke. It is savoury and mineral, with a silky bead of fine bubbles and salty fruit that slowly saturates. Notes of lime zest meet sour melon and the finish is long and powerful." Vinous

“Carminium” Carménère Colli Berici DOC 2019
The clay content in the forest soils of this incredible, almost untouched area around Oratorio di San Lorenzo gives the wine a unique note. Rich red with blue-violet reflections. Intense on the nose with notes of medicinal herbs, ripe red berries, blood orange, pepper and spices. On the palate then very precise and clear with dark fruits, a delicious spiciness and tannins that are still firm when young. Already seductive today and then elegant and silky with increasing bottle maturity. SUPERIORE.DE
pepnose. Juicy fruit channeled through a dense network of dry, firm, super-spicy tannins. A beautiful lift of dried herbs (sage, rosemary, lavender and oregano) and, a bit like their Cabernet, this lovely savoury-sweet element that is like oven-roasted cherry tomatoes with roasted vine and white pepper. Very gouleyant." Jancis Robinson
"Dark ruby red with a violet core. Scents of thyme and tarragon, black pepper on the nose, paired with blackcurrant and orange zest. On the palate juicy, dense and compact, well-integrated tannins, goes with vigour into the long finish." Falstaff
"The 2019 Carménère Carminium is remarkably floral and fresh, exuding notes of redcurrant, rosemary and ground ginger reminiscent of pepper. It is a model of purity with bright acidity lifting the mineral red fruits while savoury spices swirl through the nose. The 2019 finishes classically dry and lightly textured, leaving tart raspberry notes on the finish. This is an incredibly beautiful vintage for Carminium." Vinous
"It has a complex nose of dried thyme, tobacco, sage, tar and blackberries. Also peppercorns and cloves. It is medium-bodied, with firm tannins. Finely integrated and concentrated, with a firm finish. Better after 2024." James Suckling

“Marne 180” Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG 2020
The name says it all: Marne means marl soil, on which the vines for this marvellous Amarone grow. They are over 20 years old and lie in an ideal 180° direction, from south-west to south-east. Rich, shiny ruby red colour, compact bouquet with intense aromas of plum, black cherry, green tea and tobacco, with a fine chocolate note in the background. The body, coated in fine berry fruit, develops a dynamic flavour experience on the palate with a sweet fruit melt, firm tannins and a long finish. SUPERIORE.DE
"Dense, bright ruby red with garnet reflections. A complex nose of dried red fruits, liquorice and forest floor, with a balsamic finish. Powerful on the palate with intense fruit and length as well as a fine tannin structure." Falstaff
"Dried flowers, plums, red berries, beautifully combined with leather, oak, figs and dates, lively freshness with a beautiful tannin structure." Decanter
"The wines from this reliable producer are consistently delicious, in a modern style without ever slipping too far into excess. Cherry, alpine spruce, candied orange zest, violets and camphor. The oak combines with the refined tannins of the grapes, condensing the fruit with a welcome restraint. The vintage has a hint of sweetness. The age and accompanying complexity will serve this wine well. Lasting." James Suckling
"The 2020 Amarone della Valpolicella Marne 180 is wonderfully floral, with dusty, dried roses and violets accompanied by notes of crushed chalk and spiced blackberries. It has a silky texture and a pleasant inner sweetness with crisp forest fruits contrasted by candied orange notes. The Marne 180 finishes structured and remarkably fresh with a hint of dark chocolate that lingers. It is fantastic." Vinous

Valpolicella Classico Superiore DOC 2018
Dark ruby red. The bouquet gives a furious hint of what this opulent long-distance runner is capable of: full heart of cherry fruit, blue flowers, damp forest floor, noble spice and a well-dosed use of wood impressively alternate. Just as complex and multi-layered on the nose, the wine goes on to show beguiling wild berries, precisely polished tannins and an extraordinarily elegant long final. Wow! SUPERIORE.DE
"Bright ruby red with very light garnet reflections. Notes of ripe cherries, wild berries, sweet spices and some hints of cocoa and dried flowers. Velvety, soft, persistent, spicy flavour with excellent extract richness." Falstaff
"Crushed berries and a layer of mahogany on the nose. Full-to medium-bodied with a very refined, polished feel and intense flavor. Firm tannins push the length. Very solid, but exuding finesse." James Suckling
"The 2018 Valpolicella Classico Superiore seduces with a dusting of confectionery spice and sweet smoke complementing its bright cherry profile. This is juicy and round with vivid ripe red berries and minty herbs, along with violet and lavender florals. The finish is long and staining with round tannins that linger. For all of its sweet spice, the Valpolicella Classico Superiore is matured entirely in large Slavonian oak - what you smell is fruit." Vinous

“Cresasso” Corvina Veronese IGT 2017
Cresasso - an exquisite, pure Corvina. Intense aromas of dark fruit, rose petals and spices. Rich, concentrated fruit on the palate, silky, with a remarkable inner sweetness. Distinctive and sensual. SUPERIORE.DE
"Dried cherry, dried blueberries and spices with a smoky and meaty character, powerful with an intense finish and very pure." Decanter
"This wine showcases why Corvina is at the heart of so many red wines from the Veneto. It's densely concentrated, with aromas of black cherry and baked plums covered in sweet baking spices from the oak the wine is aged in. The wine is polished and elegant on the palate, with tannins that are firm but will soften with some time. The primary fruit will give way to more savory notes that are only just peeking their heads out currently." Wine Enthusiast
"This wine is full of spicy red and black fruits, almost exotic, with notes of fresh dates, passion fruit, raspberries and a hint of chocolate. On the palate, it is full-bodied with an ever more vibrant fruit that clings to the very fine and slightly firm tannins, resulting in a flawless finish with plenty of flavour and good length." James Suckling
"The 2017 Corvina Cresasso is aromatically stunning, with a captivating blend of raspberry and cherry sauce accompanied by a pinch of sweet spice and cocoa. This model of elegance rolls on silky waves of texture over a core of vibrant acidity, while masses of mineral-tinged red and blue fruits saturate the senses. The 2017 finishes structured and grippy with a primary concentration that lingers as tart red plums and rosy flowers slowly fade away. This single-varietal Corvina is fantastic, but it will need cellaring to show its best side." Vinous

“Vigna Colle Sant’Antonio” Soave Classico DOC 2018
"Rich, deep and convincing: Colle Sant'Antonio is a small selection of Garganega that I carefully choose in the vineyard and patiently wait for in the cellar." Graziano Prà
Intense yellow with golden reflections. The complex bouquet is reminiscent of ripe yellow fruit, cinnamon, fresh vanilla, acacia and chestnut honey. Its freshness is in perfect balance with its alcohol content and powerful body. Sweet roasted almonds and candied apricots come to the fore in the terrificfinish. The tertiary aromas created by ageing in French oak barrels contribute to the complexity of the flavour and round off the unique drinking experience perfectly. SUPERIORE.DE
"Sparkling, light golden yellow with a clear green colour. Great playfulness on the nose, rich notes of apricot and peach, some sage in the background, plus flint. Sparkling on the palate, rich, ripe fruit, paired with juiciness and mineral freshness, long finish." Falstaff
"This light-footed white wine is both lusciously creamy and well polished, with mouthwatering acidity and a fine textural interplay that carries a beautiful array of flavours of baked white cherries and apricots, candied ginger, dried basil and grilled macadamia nuts. Long and juicy on the finish, with hints of honey, minerals and spice." Wine Spectator
"Golden Delicious apples, pressed yellow flowers, acacia honey and wet stone aromas waft from the glass of this heady Soave. The palate is round and structured, with baked fruit, white peach, roasted citrus and mixed spices leading to the mineral finish." Wine Enthusiast
"The Soave Classico Colle Sant'Antonio 2018 has an intense golden yellow colour and shows a rich bouquet of baked apples and pears in the glass, complemented by a hint of aromatic herbs. It soothes with its soft and enveloping texture, remaining wonderfully perfumed and energetic, while ripe orchard fruits and a hint of green melon settle on the palate. The Colle Sant'Antonio tapers off for a long time, allowing hints of white peach and candied lime to slowly fade away. The balance of this wine is exceptional and promises many years of steady development." Vinous
"The wholesome flagship made using a cordon-cut technique to concentrate the fruit in a fusion of three different top crus into a swirl of mandarin, mango chutney, salted quince and pineapple spice. Medium-bodied, luscious, almost exotic, yet with a hint of quinine bitterness on the finish." James Suckling

“I Palchi” Soave Classico Foscarino DOC 2021
Inama's Garganega flagship is named after the wide terraces with rows of old Garganega vines trained in beads on Monte Foscarino. In 2019, thanks to the optimal orientation and careful cultivation, a selection of the best grapes was reserved for I Palchi, which will now only be released on the market in the best years in very limited quantities. It is the archetype of a Soave Classico from volcanic soils and a more than successful, independent interpretation of the Garganega grape.
Deep, rich straw yellow colour. Delicate, highly elegant nose of white flowers, stone fruit and meadow herbs, rounded off with a lovely spiciness and a hint of flint. Full-bodied on the palate, with a firm creaminess, dense, ripe fruit and complex, mineral components. A dream in velvet and silk, carried by a well-proportioned acidity and with an impressive final. SUPERIORE.DE
"Bright, radiant straw yellow with elegant green reflections. Appealing nose of ripe lemon, cold smoke, exotic undertones, candied pineapple, sugared coconut, cold herbal tea on the final. Very nice melting on the palate, with a racy-salty undertone, polished, with beautiful play, mouth-watering in the final and with fine length." Falstaff
"Rich, round and flinty, it's full of exotic and peachy yellow fruits, allied to lovely freshness and poised sapidity. Smoky and spicy hints emerge on the long, slightly woody finish. Class." Decanter
"The Soave Classico Foscarino Grande Cuvée I Palchi 2021 is what they describe as the most representative target for this wine. Made from 100% Garganega, the wine is beautifully structured and fresh, almost crisp and very detailed with peach, honeydew melon, exotic fruits and crushed oyster shells. I Palchi consists of terraced vineyards with 50 to 60 year old vines that are trained using a pergola-rafter system. Garganega is a very vigorous grape variety. The choice of oak wood is carefully considered here." Wine Advocate
"The moment the cork is pulled, you know you're in for a ride. The wine opens with aromas of lemon blossom, lemon peel and lemon curd. You might think that this is all the wine has to offer, but you are quickly led down a different path where flavours of hazelnut, roasted apples, magnolia and the first hint of smoke emerge. As the wine reaches the palate, you are hurled into the vineyard and feel the power of the soil. Flavours of white peach, mixed citrus, wild herbs and honey lead the way to an explosion of minerality that captivates you back into the glass. This is a wine that can hold its own with any other in the world." Wine Enthusiast
"The Soave Classico I Palchi Foscarino Grande Cuvée 2021 has a platinum gold colour and a youthful, intense bouquet that blends raw almonds with stone dust, dusty dried flowers and Asian pear. It seduces with its silky texture and supple personality, washing over the palate with crisp, ripe fruit accompanied by a savoury mix of spicy herbs and minerals. The 2021 tapers dramatically long and fresh, leaving an aftertaste of mint and liquid stone." Vinous
"Wow. This is fantastic with mangoes, lemons, pears and a hint of vanilla. Mineral flavours too. Full-bodied with bright fruit and a lively finish. Lots of minerality. A selection of the best grapes from Inama in the Grand Cru Foscarino. Outstanding." James Suckling

Capitel Monte Olmi 2017 takes things to another level. It coats the glass with a deep purple glow and exudes a dark and seductive bouquet of redcurrants, sultanas, black liquorice and a hint of spiced citrus. The deep, velvety texture is complemented by juicy acids and tart red fruits that drench everything they touch, leaving a complex layer of savoury spices, minerals and fine tannins. This wine is structured, long and full of character, but with a balance that will carry it for many years in the cellar. SUPERIORE.DE
"Dark, shiny ruby red with garnet reflections. Very intense aromas of blueberry, black elderberry, ripe plum, sandalwood, chocolate and tobacco leaf on the nose. Powerful and very fruity on the palate, delicately spicy and dense, with fine tannins, very balanced final with great drinking pleasure." Falstaff
"Blackberry pie, sweet and savoury spices, woody herbs and violets swirl in the glass. In the mouth, it's lush and creamy, with cooked plums and black cherries on the mid-palate accompanied by anise, clove and pepper, finishing with fine tannins and bright acidity. The wine shows the 2017 vintage with its concentrated richness, but there is enough acidity to hold the wine together." Wine Enthusiast
"Restrained and deep nose of black pepper, earth, blackberries, blueberries and bay leaves. The attack is lush, dense and velvety, with a full body, refined tannins, firm acidity and great balance. Long, amazing finish with notes of dark chocolate." James Suckling
"The 2017 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Riserva Capitel Monte Olmi is youthfully shy, slowly unfurling notes of cocoa, cloves, lavender and dried black cherries as it swirls. Creamy and seamlessly silky, it soothes the palate with its cooling acidity as the masses of ripe red and blue fruits slowly saturate. A bitter hint of dark chocolate lingers along with a tart berry concentration framed by crisp tannins. For this warm and dry vintage, this is an excellent performance. Its balance is just right." Vinous
"One of the most traditional wineries in Valpolicella, ancient wisdom combined with modern intuition. A Riserva made from Corvina, Rondinone, Rondinella and other red grapes, taut on the nose with notes of laurel and eucalyptus, fresh, dense and deep on the palate, with a spicy-salty finish." “San Floriano” Amarone della Valpolicella Riserva DOCG 2013
Brigaldara's Amarone Riserva is a wine born from the desire to interpret Valpolicella in its most original form. The strictly selected grapes that form its basis are chosen from the best vineyards in order to maximise the potential of the estate's own vineyards in Valpolicella.
Garnet red in colour, with aromas of preserved fruit, spices, sour cherries and hints of tobacco and cocoa. Brigaldara's Riserva is a large, concentrated "old-school" Amarone with a good dose of residual sugar and volatile acidity, which give the wine its unmistakable style and lend it plenty of complexity. This uncompromising and rich Amarone hits all the right notes: Mocha, old leather, smoke, tobacco and liquorice are just some of the exciting components of its long, personality-rich and distinctive finish. An energetic wine with a balance between fruit and power, which plays with its class and depth and has secured a place in the appellation's list of best wines thanks to its complex and deep tertiary flavours. SUPERIORE.DE
"Dark, shining, noble ruby red with a subtly brightening rim. Elegant wood on the nose, ripe berry fruit, dried tomato, comes in several waves, incense, cherries, raspberries, very complex. Very elegant on the palate, with notes of black tea, tightly woven tannins, lots of juiciness and fruit, extremely elegant Amarone with plenty of verve." Falstaff
"Very dark ruby in colour. Interesting, dense and lifted nose of peppery cherry, damson and plum, with a hint of pine and creaminess from what I suspect is oak. Smooth and well balanced. Almost defies its 16%. On the palate, it doesn't come across as bulky, and it has the right amount of supple tannins. A little warmth on the finish, but without the often distracting sweetness that this type of wine usually has." Jancis Robinson
"This wine gracefully combines taut, sculpted tannins with a tarry minerality and a detailed flavour profile of dried cherries, plum jam, tobacco and cocoa nibs. Medium-bodied and silky on the palate, with an orange peel acidity that cleanses the finish." Wine Spectator
"A delicious, liquid Riserva with beautiful dried fruit and nutty, cedar-like influences. Also floral notes and dried peel. Full and silky, with a residue of red, savoury tannin coming through at the end. Very pretty now, but it will age for a long time." James Suckling
"Aromas of black plum and spice cake rise from the glass of this rich and heady Amarone. As the wine progresses, notes of dark chocolate and espresso follow through to dried thyme and violet notes. The rounded and rich tannins provide a structured and straightforward finish, while on the palate the tart red and dried black fruits mingle with sweet spices, leading to an earthy finish." Wine Enthusiast
"The 2013 Amarone della Valpolicella Riserva San Floriano smolders up from the glass with a smoky blend of dried black cherries, blood orange and grilled herbs. This is a perfect mixture of elegance and purity, with silken textures and polished red fruits flowing across a lively stream of acidity. It’s youthfully dense and powerful yet also restrained, finishing with a web of fine-grained tannin that clamps down hard as hints of licorice and sour orange slowly taper off. It will take a good deal of time for the 2013 to come fully into focus, but it will be worth the wait. In 2013, the Riserva hailed entirely from the Case Vecie vineyard." Vinous

Amarone della Valpolicella Classico DOCG 2018 · MAGNUM
Zenato's Amarone is all about elegance, with ripe fruit at the centre of the inviting bouquet with light notes of aromatic herbs. Powerful, sparkling ruby colour. Very appealing and multi-layered nose of plum, black cherry and a hint of leather. The palate reveals its overripe power, fine tannins and warm, expansive flavour. SUPERIORE.DE
"Bright garnet red with a broad, brightening rim. Baroque bouquet on the nose, of sultanas, preserved cherry and varnish. Powerful on the palate, slightly warming, with a fine-grained tannin structure, mouth-filling and extremely long on the tongue." Falstaff
"Very ripe nose with aromas of dried sultanas, toffee, angelica and dark plum fruit. Powerful, soft and warm on the palate." Decanter
"A harmonious version, round and medium to full-bodied, with fine tannins wrapped in a fragrant blend of macerated cherries and strawberries, tea roses and tea leaves, minerals and spices. Juicy finish." Wine Spectator
"The Amarone della Valpolicella Classico 2018 is exotic in the glass, with nuances of blood orange and mint that fade into preserved cherries and cloves. Supple and round on the entry, it impresses with its core of lively acidity and vividly ripe red fruits, which create an interplay of sweet and sour on the palate. The wine finishes with depth and concentration, but is also unexpectedly fresh and allows notes of plums and autumnal spices to linger for a long time. For this vintage, this is an extremely successful achievement. I take my hat off to Zenato." Vinous
"Very aromatic, with flavours of dried red and black fruits, including dried blueberries and dates, along with a lovely, spicy layer of nutmeg and pressed flowers. Full-bodied with an amazingly harmonious texture on the palate, thanks to the dense, very fine tannins, which also provide super length. A bright, salty, mineral note sets in and drives the finish even further. Exquisite Amarone." James Suckling

“Cresasso” Corvina Veronese IGT 2017 · MAGNUM in OWC
Recioto della Valpolicella Classico DOCG 2015 dolce
This exceptional Recioto was matured for 6 years in Slavonian oak. Deep, dark ruby red in colour. In the nose, a beguiling extract of black cherry, dried flowers and a fine spiciness, with hints of liquorice and mint. On the palate, the fruit is uniform, extremely harmonious and concentrated to the point. Notes of gingerbread, dark chocolate and black cherry glide into an almost endless finish with an unforgettable aftertaste. SUPERIORE.DE
"Dark ruby with purple hues, the 2015 Recioto della Valpolicella Classico is youthfully coy, requiring coaxing to evolve in the glass. Swirling and time bring forward a more savory bouquet as exotic spices, balsamic tones and hints of incense emerge, followed by dried blueberries and violet pastille. This is pure seduction, like silk draped across the palate, revealing depths of ripe black cherry and wild berry fruits, enhanced by a core of blood orange. Even at 70 grams-per-liter of residual sugar, it's hard to perceive the 2015 as a sweet wine. Its zesty acidity adds harmony, closing with a pleasantly bitter tinge and gently grippy tannins that frame the experience so well." Vinous

When Eric Guido (Vinous.com) talks about the current status of the Veneto wine region, he rightly calls it "a constant process of development":
"Whether it's Valpolicella, Soave or one of the smaller growing areas in the region, Veneto has undergone enormous change in a seemingly very short period of time - mostly in a positive direction. However, in a region like Valpolicella, where some wines are only released a decade after the grape harvest, these changes have been taking place for much longer than most of us realise.
Winemakers say that the decisions they make are for many years into the future or for the next generation. We are now at a time when ideas that were developed more than a decade ago are finally coming to fruition. I remember tastings almost 20 years ago where much younger versions of the same people I meet with today were talking about a future where Amarone would be brought to the table. Recent tastings have revealed many wines that can do just that. Producers across the region are now focussing on reducing alcohol and residual sugar. Unfortunately, Mother Nature keeps challenging this idea with a series of warm and dry vintages that favour ripeness and concentration. This is certainly not easy. Winemakers don't want to change the principles and traditions of Amarone, their most admired wine, but finding a balance can be a challenge. The best producers have been working towards this goal for many years, and their wines are proof of what is possible.
This is not to say that there is no place for the traditional old-school Amarone, a wine of decadence and celebration - a perfect end to an evening or a wine to drink in front of a crackling fire on a cold night. Many wineries are staying true to tradition and finding a wonderful balance between opulence and complexity in their wines. I don't want these wines to disappear, but I wonder how much room there is for them on the market.
In previous articles about Valpolicella, I have described in detail the difference between the sub-regions of Classico and Valpantena and the valleys of Marcellise, Mezzane, Illasi and Cazzano di Tramigna. Today it is quite clear that each individual area can produce excellent wines. What I am referring to is the gap between the producers who make Amarone in the traditional style (often with 17+% alcohol) and those who aim for 15% alcohol and a sugar content of only 1 to 1.5 grams. The same logic now applies to Valpolicella Superiore. Producers across the region are doing everything they can to elevate this category and show the world that they can make dry red wines without appassimento that convey the terroir. Appassimento was originally invented to make an inferior wine special, but as a result it is no longer a product of nature, but a manufactured wine. While I consider Ripasso to be a happy medium between Amarone and Valpolicella, many winemakers admit that they only make it out of tradition.
This brings us back to the Valpolicella Superiore, which goes beyond the fresh, light and early-drinking versions. They are far more complex and energetic than the "normal" Valpolicellas and are enhanced by the appassimento. The problem is: how can the consumer recognise the difference? The only way for Valpolicella to successfully manage these changes, however positive they may be, is to communicate to consumers what they are buying. Is it an Amarone for the dinner table or for the cheese course? Is it a Valpolicella Superiore for the cellar and contemplation or to drink relaxed on a Tuesday evening with pizza?
But now let's move next door to Soave: like a mirror image of the Valpolicella quality pyramid, the classifications in Soave make a big difference, especially between the Classico zone and the appellation's extended growing areas. The Classico area of Soave comprises high elevations, steep slopes and a mixture of volcanic and densely layered limestone and clay soils known as Scaglia Rossa, and is recognisable at a glance on the map. Outside the Classico area there are foothills with excellent terroir and elevations capable of producing great wines, but most of the DOC Soave consists of plains with alluvial soils rich in clay, sand and limestone. Can you make good wine here? Certainly. But can you also make great wine here? That is questionable. What is certain, however, is that the world has not yet recognised the potential of Soave.
Soave is well on its way to greatness, as the terroir is capable of producing some of the best white wines in Italy. Several renowned producers have already proven what is possible here, and the Consorzio Tutela Vini Soave e Recioto di Soave has taken the trouble to map the region, analyse its soils and identify the best vineyards. The problem is that the name Soave, with its long-standing trademark and past success, guarantees that a producer can sell his wines without bothering to raise them above an average level of quality. As a result, at every tasting of Soave, you find a few outstanding producers pushing their limits amidst a plethora of mediocre producers dragging the reputation of the entire region down with them.
Soave continues to be one of the best sources in Italy for world-class white wines at a reasonable price; the problem is that harvestneed to pay attention to the producer before picking a Soave bottle off the shelf. Every year I find new and exciting projects here that show there is much more to discover. A quality revolution is slowly taking place. In my opinion, Soave is the most underrated white wine in Italy." VINOUS
So much for the current overview of one of Italy's most famous and diverse wine regions. As always, we have put together some of the wines that Eric Guido considers to be outstanding from the Soave Classico, Valpolicella Classico Superiore and, of course, Amarone appellations.
