The country dance (controdanza) is a typical dance in which man and woman face each other and unite in graceful movements - depending on their gender, the dancers interpret the music in their own way. This wine is exactly the same: Nero d'Aola and Merlot - opposites attract and, with the right sensitivity, can harmonise and contrast wonderfully.

“Sul Vulcano” Bianco Etna DOC 2021
Donnafugata's impressive declaration of love to Etna, currently the hottest wine hotspot, began with the Sul Vulcano line. Carricante is one of the most exciting grape varieties in southern Italy, capable of complexity and terroir-driven expression in the right soils. The vines for Donnafugata's only white wine from Etna grow on volcanic soils rich in minerals at an altitude of 700-750 metres. The wine is fermented in steel tanks before maturing partly in concrete tanks and partly in second and third choice barriques for 10 months and then a further nine months in the bottle.

“Mozia” Grillo Sicilia DOC 2023
The small, museum-like island of Mozia in the Marsala lagoon is a production site of unrivalled uniqueness. It is a marine ecosystem that has always been linked to the vineyard. The English, who came to Marsala at the beginning of the 19th century and recognised its great potential, initiated the first planting. The vines are cultivated naturally using the Gobelet system with natural irrigation. The grapes are harvested in crates, brought to the mainland in flat-bottomed boats and then transported to the Regaleali winery in air-conditioned lorries to guarantee their aromatic integrity.

We are not the only ones who eagerly await this report year after year: Eric Guido, Vinous.com's Italy specialist, writes about the latest developments in what is probably Italy's most dynamic wine region.
"At the risk of sounding like a broken record, I can't help but be excited about the constant improvement in the quality of Sicilian wines. I believe that part of this leap in quality comes from a sense of pride that is ingrained in everyone I meet in the region, from the field labourer to the agronomist to the winemaker. And this conviction does not stop at the ordinary passer-by: if you ask on the street, you are sure to come across the region, its history and the importance of its place in relation to Italian wines.
Of all the tastings I do every year, I can hardly find one that is as varied and enjoyable as this one. Sicilian wine is typically Sicilian in every conceivable way, despite the size of the island and the dramatic climatic differences. These wines are energetic and flavoursome, often flamboyant and unmistakably sun-drenched, but have a lively, acidic core that keeps us coming back to the glass. They range from the most lovable Tuesday night pizza wines to the most distinguished and serious long-term agers.
Sicily's diverse terroir still offers many undiscovered facets. The island is mountainous, much more so than most people realise. It has remained seemingly untouched by the modern world, with dense forests and a natural biodiversity that has thrived for thousands of years. Only in the west, around the towns of Marsala and Menfi, do these mountains taper down to lower elevations that run along the coast. The volcanic satellite islands of Pantelleria, Salina, Lipari and Vulcano enrich the Sicilian wine scene with unique wines that are strongly influenced by the surrounding seas. Then there is Etna with its high elevations, where the Nebrodi and Peloritani mountains cool the northern slopes. In contrast, the southern slopes are influenced by the Adriatic Sea.
Due to Sicily's diversity, almost every grape variety finds an ideal terroir to thrive. The all-encompassing Sicilia DOC category allows the island's wineries to offer indigenous and international varieties in a wide range of styles, which is perfect for the curious wine lover. The fruity yet energetic Catarratto, Grillo, Perricone and Zibibbo are plentiful but can achieve a certain seriousness in the hands of the right winemaker. The same goes for Frappato, which I consider to be the Beaujolais of Sicily. I am always surprised when wines from the far south appear on the tasting table. In combination with Nero d'Avola (we are talking about a serious wine here), the two grape varieties together make Cerasuolo di Vittoria, a DOCG that has piqued my interest, but unfortunately does not receive nearly the attention it deserves from consumers. The ability of Nero d'Avola to age beautifully over time and convey a distinct sense of terroir has never been more evident. The Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio and Carricante grape varieties from Etna also point the way to the future for the region. And for lovers of international grape varieties, Sicily offers a wide range of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Syrah, Chardonnay and many others, which prove their worth with great success year after year.
Sicily's biggest challenge is also one of the region's best features: there are so many varieties and styles that it is difficult for wine consumers to know where to start. But it is also difficult to go wrong. Long-established producers such as Tasca d'Almerita, Planeta and Donnafugata have founded several wineries that, with their team and their specialities, offer a portfolio that encompasses everything Sicily has to offer. If you get lost in the assortment of any of these names, wine lovers have the opportunity to have a pleasant drinking experience for weeks, if not months. What's more, despite their size, each of these companies offers a fantastic level of quality. Speaking of quality, I have seen the biggest upswing in a short space of time in small, family-run businesses. The days of overly rustic wines are behind us. It's the perfect time to discover Sicilian wine.
And Etna is still on the rise: while Sicily rightly maintains its place among Italy's top wine regions, Etna has established itself as one of the most important wine-growing regions in the world. Mark my words: the day when Etna gets its own coverage, much like the Barolo, Montalcino and Burgundy regions, will soon come. The progress I have witnessed over the last ten years is nothing short of astonishing. Initially, Etna Rosso, a blend of Nerello Mascalese and smaller quantities of Nerello Cappuccio, which is often compared to red Burgundy and Barolo, captured the imagination of collectors and consumers. Today, people in the region are even more excited about the possible future of Etna Bianco (typically Carricante, sometimes blended with Catarratto) and Etna Bianco Superiore, which is developing around the municipality of Milo.
Just how different one place can be to another can be seen with the naked eye when travelling around Etna. The term contrada is best described as a neighbourhood of vineyards that are in a general location and have similar altitudes but a variety of unique soil types. The well-known Feudo di Mezzo is a perfect example, a large contrada that is considered roughly homogeneous but has soils from two different lava flows dating back to 1879 and 1646. Looking even deeper, parcels such as the Porcaria vineyard show a completely different interpretation. The Porcaria vineyard is located in the Feudo di Mezzo and is the result of a delicate layer of lava that was carried over hundreds of years by a small stream that collected at this point. Today, the remaining ash and volcanic sand are so fine that it feels like walking on air when you sink your feet deep into the velvety dunes. This is just one of hundreds of examples where terroir fanatics can lose themselves in the extreme diversity of Etna. The day may soon come when we can place an Etna Rosso Castiglione di Sicilia and an Etna Rosso Randazzo side by side to discover their unique characteristics.
This brings up a key point: the importance of Etna Rosso and Etna Bianco. Wine lovers and collectors are often of the opinion that the Rosso or Bianco are the entry-level wines of the region. Not so on Etna. The popularity of the different contrade has led most wineries to use these names on their labels to convey a sense of place to wine buyers. However, Etna Rosso and Etna Bianco should not be considered second wines. Rather, they are often a blend of the various contrade that a winery has access to. For the most part, these wines offer tremendous value, especially when compared to Barolo and Burgundy.
I am looking forward to the day when each contrada can be analysed and catalogued and when the tastings of the individual wines are organised in such a way that we can not only look at the place, but also at the winemaker's signature. The wine geek in me is ready for this. I can't imagine a more exciting time." Vinous
