Barolo Ravera DOCG 2018
G.D. Vajra's Ravera (whose site straddles the municipalities of Novello and Barolo) is always the most angular, powerful and vertical of their collection. It comes from soils with clay and sandstone at 320 to 340 metres above sea level. This is the ideal place for wines that show both power and elegance. The tannins are sweet, but every fibre of the backbone is dense and firm. Red and purple fruits with liquorice, tar and white truffle are neatly packed here, revealing themselves only gradually but then with beautiful precision and straightforwardness. Barolo Coste di Rose DOCG 2018
The latest addition to Vajra's Barolo line-up comes from a 1.5 hectare parcel in Coste di Rose, a small MGA (Menzioni Geografiche Aggiuntive) in the Barolo region. This is a steep slope at 310 metres above sea level with a high proportion of sandy soils with good drainage, whose vines and soils are cultivated in a natural way. This very accessible Barolo presents itself straightforward, forward and impresses even at a young age with its refreshing frankness. A very precise bouquet of cherry, plum, liquorice, spices and menthol. The Sottimano winery has five vineyard sites, with the Pajorè site near Treiso having the poorest soils of all. These wines are therefore more elegant and ripe. Pajoré is a super-classic, explosive wine, with tremendous depth and character. Although it has a lot of breadth and texture, it remains light on its feet. Lavender, mint, liquorice and purple berry fruit are beguiling and wonderfully vibrant in the glass. Barolo Mosconi DOCG 2018
A few years ago, Pio Boffa, who has unfortunately passed away in the meantime, bought himself a "small" present for his 60th birthday. Not a new set of golf clubs, a picture hanging in the hall, a holiday for him and the family. No. Just a vineyard called Mosconi in Monforte d'Alba, a region of Piedmont where four generations of the Pio Cesare dynasty never gained a foothold. Originally, the grapes from the 10-hectare vineyard were to enhance the quality of his classic Barolo, but after the first barrel samples, it was unmistakably clear to Pio Boffa that this would be at least an equal - if stylistically different - counterpart to the hitherto undisputed flagship Ornato.

Barolo Cerequio DOCG 2018
Vintage 2018 marks Vietti's exciting Barolo debut from one of Piedmont's most famous vineyards, characterised by exuberant aromas and bright, red-tinged fruit. The bouquet is enormously opulent with ripe fruit aromas ranging from wild cherry to red currant. This is joined by original tones of jam, plum and a hint of ragout. When Monica Larner, Italy taster for Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, publishes her extensive notes on the current collections from Piedmont, it is a highly comprehensive and exciting affair every year. This year, too, she has tasted almost 1,000 samples since spring and has therefore only published the first two major Piedmont rankings in the last few weeks. And a third will follow after the stragglers have been released, we will of course keep you up to date.
What makes us particularly happy: Vietti, our "bedrock" from Piedmont and in our range for 20 years, not only receives above-average and high ratings, but Monica Larner also dedicates a separate paragraph to this showpiece winery for current reasons:
"Vietti is one of the most dynamic wineries in this appellation. From the 2019 vintage, the entire production of Barolo and Barbera is certified organic. This innovation reveals three big surprises. There are three new wines in their first release: the single-vineyard Barolo Cerequio (with grapes from La Morra), the Barolo Monvigliero from Verduno and the Barbaresco Masseria, now made entirely from grapes from the Cru site Roncaglie. The Monvigliero is of particular interest, it is made from 60% whole grapes in collaboration with colleagues from Borgogna. I also recently read that Luca Currado Vietti made an investment in Monvigliero in 2018 with a group of 10 American investors for an 8,000 square metre plot in the MGA (menzioni geografiche aggiuntive). Luca was unable to buy the property outright, but under the terms of the joint agreement, the investor group retains 45% of the production each year, which is released under the Vietti label, and Luca is left with the remaining 55%. The question is: what will come out of his share of this precious fruit?" Monica Larner
