Italy's wine island of Sicily has enthralled us for over 20 years. The constant activity of the volcano, the renewal of the fertile volcanic soils, the unique microclimate, the rainfall and the sky-high elevations make Etna a powder keg for agriculture and viticulture. The volcano is the lifeline for one of Italy's most fertile regions, with vines, some still rooted and over 100 years old, planted high up on Etna's cone, oranges in the lower elevations that have a redder colour and more intense flavour, olives that are meatier and juicier, and tiny neon pink wildflowers that love to grow in the midnight black lava.
"Elegance and tension are what we are looking for," winemaker Alberto Graci once told us. The landscape around him is painted in three colours: black from the lava and volcanic rock used to build his winery, green from the vineyards in the background and bright blue from the sky above. "There are only a few places on earth where wines with these characteristics can be made, and Etna is one of them."
