Wine

The Teroldego from Foradori are all a great experience. Elisabetta makes extremely interesting wines from the autochthonous grape variety from the foot of the Dolomites. And they are made purely organically and partly in amphorae. Morei (dark in Trentino dialect) is an original red wine that is true to its terroir and is irresistibly elegant and refined. Warm, dense and mineral like the soil on which it grows. Morei is protected from cold northerly winds by the nearby, abruptly rising rock faces. The rock stores heat during the day, which radiates to the vineyard at night. The soil here is very stony and therefore relatively warm, dense, dark and mineralised, just like the Morei Teroldego wine of the same name. The average age of the vines (30 years) also contributes to its depth of character. SUPERIORE.DE

Parussi is the most open-hearted and fruity Barolo in Massolino's 2019 collection. It has a striking immediacy and sweetness in the mid-palate. Juicy red and purple berries, spices and mint combine in the glass. On the palate, Parussi is silky, floral and medium-bodied, displaying all the sensuality typical of Castiglione Falletto's Barolos. Amarone Calcarole is only produced in small quantities in the best vintages and has been officially labelled Riserva since the 2015 vintage. The single vineyard of the same name is located above Villa di Rovereti in the heart of Negrar in the Valpolicella Classico region. The vineyard offers ideal conditions for great red wines due to its particularly warm climate, stony soil and south-west exposure. The grapes are 100% dried in small crates in the historic rooms of Pojega.

A wonderfully intense, balsamic wine with memories of rosemary oil, damp forest floor and dried ginger. Complex berry flavours and wonderful depth on the palate, Calcarole is thoroughly masculine, energetic and powerful, with tightly woven tannins and a clear structure. SUPERIORE.DE

Neromaccarj comes from a low-lying vineyard facing the sea and shows the ripe and juicy side of Nero d'Avola. The wine opens with a deep dark appearance and flavours that are dense and broad, forming a high wall of black plum fruit. The wine is very immediate and impressive, and you don't have to look far to recognise all these wide-ranging aromas on the nose. Magari is a dark, rich and voluptuous wine that faithfully reflects the signature of Gaja in Bolgheri. On the palate, plump and supple fruit, dark berries and spices mingle with seamless intensity. Just 2,100 bottles of this 1.5 ha single vineyard Cabernet Franc "Campo di Magnacosta" (a former riverbed with mainly clay, gravel and crushed stone soil) reach the specialised trade and the menus of the best restaurants worldwide. The vines were planted in the mid-1990s and come from Pomerol. In terms of aromatic intensity, Magnacosta is probably the most sensually elegant representative of the house's three great site cabernets. It has great straightness, but somewhat less power and intensity. It subtly combines black fruit aromas with spicy notes, tar and antique leather. It is already silky and elegant and will certainly gain in finesse over the years. SUPERIORE.DE

"If you love Cabernet Franc, please direct your attention here. The Tenuta di Trinoro 2019 Campo di Magnacosta is a study in the intensity, power and depth of this grape. Campo di Magnacosta was the first of several single-vineyard parcels planted to this variety. The first bottling from this 1.5-hectare site was made in 2011, and this year a mere 2,122 bottles were released. The wine is profound and pure with luscious dark fruit, sharp minerality, spice and etched contours. You get that distinctive hint of slate or pencil shaving that is especially characteristic of this Cabernet Franc. Here comes the new single-vineyard wine, similar in style to Santo Spirito but with an "autumnal" component. Light ruby red, gravel, vanilla and a subtle hint of mint on the nose, plus some cranberry and cherry. Then fresh and exciting on the palate with a sweet and sour component and a delicate bitter vein. Compact tannin that certainly deserves a few more years of bottle ageing. Planeta's famous Chardonnay exudes a large and rich bouquet with aromas of apricot, apple, lemon, honey and lime. On the palate, the same intense flavours, delicate melting paired with fruity freshness and beautiful length. A Sicilian white wine at the highest level since its debut vintage in 1995, it definitely needs a few years to mature in the bottle. SUPERIORE.DE

Dark, translucent ruby red in the glass, elegant even at first glance. An inviting aroma of red and black fruit flavours, almost a mix of wild berries and sour cherries. And then again that spiciness so typical of Tenuta di Valgiano, herbaceous and mineral, fresh and yet Mediterranean, simply incomparable. Full-bodied on the palate, very juicy, extracted sweet fruit, again accompanied by this mineral flavour. Juicy, deep, with a silky, elegant tannin structure and a wonderfully balanced interplay of fruit and acidity. A wine with finesse and piquancy, length and ageing potential for a good fifteen to twenty years. The 4.5-hectare Convento (di Capestrano) vineyard is the youngest cru within the vineyards of the municipality of Capestrano. It extends over the higher part of the land where vines and vegetables were once grown and which belonged to the old convent of St Francis, which has stood on a hill overlooking the small village of Capestrano since the mid XV century. The microclimate, which is so different from that of the plateau, has two important consequences: A harvest that takes place on average two to three weeks earlier, depending on the year, and the result is a Montepulciano d'Abruzzo that stands out from the crus of other farms in terms of its vigour and concentration.

Deep, shiny ruby red colour. Then a complex nose of pomegranate, rosemary, coriander and red liquorice that you can lose yourself in. Fine, deep and ripe red fruit on the palate with a hint of undergrowth, old leather and mace. Supple, juicy and mouth-filling with chalky tannins. Very long and dense, opulent and gripping. "Compared to the Vigneto Sant'Eusanio, the Valle Reale 2018 Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Vigneto del Convento (with only 2,022 bottles produced and a pretty red wax capsule) is heartier in character with dark fruit, dense concentration and flavours of blackberry, ploughed earth and sweet baking spice. Before Elisabetta Gnudi Angelini acquired the Altesino estate, she bought Caparzo in 1998. The estate comprises 28 hectares dedicated to Brunello, and this estate bottling combines vineyards from four different areas with different sites and soils.

Dusty black cherries, crushed rocks and dried flowers form a classically inviting bouquet when Brunello di Montalcino 2020 opens in the glass. It has a soft texture with racy acidity driving the ripe red fruits on the palate, while chalky minerals and sweet spices mingle towards the finish. Marc de Grazia on his anniversary wine: "To honour the collective effort of the entire Tenuta delle Terre Nere team, I thought it appropriate to celebrate the 20th anniversary of our first release with a unique cuvée. This cuvée should represent our appellation and our winery and say something about our beginnings. Therefore, first and foremost, it should be an Etna Rosso, as this is our most important appellation. Secondly, the wine should be made from Calderara Sottana grapes, as our winery and the surrounding vineyards are located in Contrada Calderara Sottana, where we also have our largest expansions. However, it should not be confused with our Calderara Sottana bottling, which is made from the best fruit of exclusively old vines from all our Calderara estates.

I therefore decided to produce a cuvée from a single, particularly gifted vineyard in Calderara, called Bellacolonna. I chose it not only because of its excellent quality, but also because we planted our first vineyards here in 2006 and 2007, after sadly uprooting plots of semi-abandoned and decaying old vines. We made our beautiful cuvée from the fruit of these vines. It has the privilege of coming from an exceptionally good vineyard and at the same time the good fortune of being born in an outstanding vintage.

It has been aged in new oak (which I think is perfectly appropriate for a wine made from young vines) and has been given the same ageing time as our crus. I would say it has real charm; more stylish than our Etna Rosso with a depth and character reminiscent of our Calderara Sottana (apart perhaps from the extra layers that old vines provide). It was born elegant and will become even more subtle with age; it has the weightless composure of youth and the promise of even greater finesse in the future. It is indeed a wine that I am very proud of and that longs to epitomise all that is Tenuta delle Terre Nere."

The grapes for Le Ripi's top Brunello come from a 4-hectare vineyard near Castelnuovo dell'Abate on the eastern side of Montalcino, not far from the Lupi e Sirene vineyard.

In the glass, blackcurrants, cherries, smoky minerals, incense and savoury herbs create a beguiling spectacle. Velvety on the palate with an abundance of polished, violet-coloured fruit that moves across the palate with admirable density, leaving behind minerals and a saturation of fine tannins. Amore e Magia is youthful, monolithic and finishes structured with hints of tart berries, plum and tobacco in the background. This wine is not for Sangiovese purists, but there is plenty of crisp fruit, sour cherry and cranberry in this powerful, vibrant Brunello. SUPERIORE.DE

Terra di Lavoro 2021 is still far too young to make a final judgement, but this much is already clear: with sufficient aeration, it continues to develop rapidly and offers new, wonderful impressions with every new sip.

Notes of red berries, aromatic hints of fresh and balsamic undergrowth. Plump and full-bodied on the palate, with a very firm fruit centre and a wonderful correspondence with the beautifully layered bouquet. Its structure and all the aromatic components, its fine mineral vein and its present tannin profile indicate a wonderful ageing period. As it progresses into the final, it is already characterised by noble balsamic notes, a wonderful fruitiness and beautiful persistence. 2021 will be one of the really great Terra if it is given enough time for further refinement in the bottle! Borgo del Tiglio's Malvasia Italo & Bruno (of which only 1,200 bottles were produced) is a delicate wine with pretty scents reminiscent of white flowers, gardenias and honeydew melon. There is also a distinct mineral note, but here it is more dusty or ashy than salty. This is an exceptional expression of Malvasia, a versatile grape with particularly floral flavours when in the right hands. SUPERIORE.DE

Normally, the Sangiovese grapes from the 14-hectare single vineyard are mainly harvested in Ama and San Lorenzo. Since the 2018 harvest, Lorenza and Marco have decided to vinify a small quantity separately. Deep, dark ruby red colour with violet reflections. Extroverted bouquet of blackberry, raspberry and redcurrant, with notes of crushed gravel, tobacco and traces of young leather. Very powerful and beautifully textured on the palate, the various layers of primary fruit only gradually unfold, the wood pleasantly receding into the background. Finely granulated tannins and a well-integrated acidity flank this very harmonious red on an elegant, long final. There is a lot to like here, for us it is once again a typical Ama wine: racy, powerful and elegant! SUPERIORE.DE

Giacomo Neri's Pietradonice is Cabernet Sauvignon at the highest level and is now a legend, as there is hardly a wine in Montalcino that can even come close to equalling it. Monumental and very concentrated, with hints of sour cherries and a fine cedar wood and liquorice note. The exciting thing: Pietradonice is clearly recognisable as a Montalcino wine and yet, with its herbal and spicy character, it is as typical of Neri as it is of the grape variety and therefore seems to come from another larger world. Ai Suma offers great balance and tension. Intense ruby red with garnet-coloured reflections. There is a lot of black fruit on the nose and on the palate, along with spices, tar and leather. The wine finishes with a hint of sweetness, but the natural acidity of the grape comes in to add a pinch of freshness at the end, emphasising the class of this wine. Full, powerful, full of character, but at the same time elegant, harmonious and very persistent - a Barbera in a class of its own every year. SUPERIORE.DE

Feudi di San Gregorio's DUBL project was born in 2004 out of an awareness of the great richness of the indigenous vines of the Irpinia region and the desire to open up new horizons for them: as Metodo Classico Spumante or by means of the famous Méthode Champenoise. A consultant was quickly found for this - none other than Anselme Selosse, who is known for his champagnes and his flair for the specialities of the vines and vineyards.

The DUBL Metodo Classico Millesimato 2016 opens a new chapter in the historic collaboration between Poltrona Frau and Feudi di San Gregorio, which began in 2004 with the creation of some furnishings for the winery by the famous designers Lella and Massimo Vignelli. Three Italian excellence - the craftsmanship of Poltrona Frau, the timeless design of Vignelli and the winemaking expertise of Feudi di San Gregorio - come together once again to create an exclusive work of art, limited to 2,000 bottles.

A special wine was selected to celebrate the launch of the DUBL "Edizione Poltrona Frau" bottle: A Millesimato 2016, aged on the lees for more than eight years and made from 100% Greco grapes, a grape variety that has been prized since Roman times and is now one of Italy's most prestigious. The red leather label is handmade from production waste by Italy's most famous leather manufacturer, Poltrona Frau. Each individual label is applied by hand with the artisanal care that characterises both the leather processing and the long ageing process of the wine. SUPERIORE.DE

Beautiful and very well-balanced red wine from the three main historical areas of Montalcino, which have different geoclimatic characteristics due to their different slopes and altitudes, thus ensuring a unique balance between freshness and structure, body and elegance. Ruby red in colour with garnet hues, it opens immediately with a rich, complex nose. Initially dark cherry, chinotto orange and violet. It then opens up to broader, more complex notes of blueberry, vanilla, tobacco, cinnamon and chocolate with a subtle menthol finish. Garnet red in colour, with aromas of preserved fruit, spices, sour cherries and hints of tobacco and cocoa. Brigaldara's Riserva is a large, concentrated "old-school" Amarone with a good dose of residual sugar and volatile acidity, which give the wine its unmistakable style and lend it plenty of complexity. This uncompromising and rich Amarone hits all the right notes: Mocha, old leather, smoke, tobacco and liquorice are just some of the exciting components of its long, personality-rich and distinctive finish. An energetic wine with a balance between fruit and power, which plays with its class and depth and has secured a place in the appellation's list of best wines thanks to its complex and deep tertiary flavours. The name says it all: Marne means marl soil, on which the vines for this marvellous Amarone grow. They are over 20 years old and lie in an ideal 180° direction, from south-west to south-east.
