“Kratos” Fiano Cilento DOC 2023 (BIO)
Luigi Maffini's Kràtos is an organic wine grown in the foothills of the ancient ruins of Paestum. It spends only a short time in steel tanks and is smoky but also fruit-driven, with musky dried apricots, lime zest, crushed rocks and sea spray forming its captivating bouquet. Energetic on the palate, soft in texture and packed with zesty citrus and mineral notes balanced by a core of vibrant, ripe yellow apples. Finishes fresh and bold with notes of lemon oil and peach. For an "entry-level" Fiano, this is great cinema! SUPERIORE.DE

“Klèos” Aglianico Cilento DOC 2022
Kleos emerges from the glass with a musky blend of blackcurrant, savoury herbs and crushed stone. Silky smooth on the palate with a depth of ripe red and black fruits balanced by a hint of citrus and spice. Finishes incredibly fresh yet powerful and lightly structured. Already very pleasant now, but due to its youthfulness deserves a short stay in the cellar to fully develop its tension. SUPERIORE.DE

“Pietraincatenata” Fiano Cilento DOC 2022 (BIO)
Fiano Pietraincatenata is the winery's flagship white wine and takes the grape variety to a whole new level. The bouquet is a fascinating blend of grapefruit, lime zest and peach with a hint of sweet smoke as it warms up in the glass. Silky yet savoury to the core on the palate. A cornucopia of citrus fruits and minerals completes the green apple fruit. Tense and invigorating as it progresses and finishes, but still well suited to further and exciting bottle ageing. “Cenito” Aglianico Cilento DOC 2021 (BIO)
Deep ruby red in colour. Cenito seduces with complex aromas of dark red fruits, cinnamon and cloves mingling with earthy tones, mint, chalk dust and camphor. The palate is seamlessly smooth and elegant, with ripe wild berries flowing over a core of vibrant acidity, while a hint of acidic citrus adds tension towards the end. The finish is structured and long, with fine-grained tannins and floral notes of sour plums and violets. Cenito is Cilento Aglianico at its best. It is deceptively accessible and gentle, but the tension increases with every sip. Be patient and savour this great Aglianico! SUPERIORE.DE

“Siopè" Aglianico Cilento DOC 2016 (BIO)
What begins with a seductive bouquet of delicate plums and a hint of mint gains volume and depth as grilled sage and rum-soaked blackcurrants mingle with sweet tobacco and allspice. Its texture is silky and fleshy, accompanied by a nervous acidity, while ripe black cherries and a hint of cranberry sauce create a sweet and sour tension on the palate. The concentration is astonishing, yet the energy remains incredibly high, even if the grippy tannins increase towards the end. Notes of sour citrus fruits, savoury herbs and tart wild berries linger incredibly long in the structured yet remarkably fresh final. Only around 3,000 bottles of this cru are produced and it is a real must-have for all Aglianico lovers! SUPERIORE.DE

A narrow, winding road leads to Luigi Maffini's picturesque winery, which is undoubtedly one of the most renowned wineries in Campania. His terroir-influenced wines are produced in the northern part of the up-and-coming but still relatively unknown Cilento region, which reveals a completely different side to Campanian viticulture.
"My father planted the first vineyard in Castellabate in 1970," says Luigi Maffini in conversation. He and his wife Raffaella Gallo only started their business in 1996. The winemaking couple studied agricultural science in Naples before founding the company and have a close friendship with the famous oenology professor Luigi Moio, who runs the top winery Quintodecimo further north.
Luigi Maffini's current production philosophy is also characterised by this long-standing exchange between the two winemakers and is entirely geared towards expressing the exceptional terroir of southern Campania in the glass. The wind-swept vineyards on the coast are very different from the warmer sites in the region's interior, which primarily influences the alcohol content and structure of the wines. In addition, the soils in Cilento consist mainly of sandstone, clay and marl, which give the wines a more mineral and fruity character compared to the intense vigour of the volcanic soils in Avellino.
Maffini's 20 hectares of vineyards are now divided between two locations: A smaller part is located not far from the archaeological site of Paestum in the villages of Giungano and Trentinara at an altitude of 300 to 350 metres above sea level. The majority of the historic vineyards, which were also planted by Luigi's father, grow behind Punta Licosa in the paradisiacally beautiful area of Castellabate, which is now a Unesco World Heritage Site.
Raffaella and Luigi cultivate their vineyards according to organic guidelines and see themselves as guardians of biodiversity. As a result, they have introduced the rigorous reuse of rainwater for their wine production, as well as the use of renewable energy and fully recyclable materials. Today, the impressive organic range includes two white wines, Kratos and Pietraincatenata, made from the ancient Fiano grape variety, as well as three red wines: Klèos, Cenito and Siopè, made from 100% Aglianico grapes.
The family winery remains true to the local wine culture with its choice of grape varieties and demonstrates the great potential of Cilento year after year. Compared to better-known growing areas such as Taurasi and Avellino, the wines are softer and their structure leaner. But don't be fooled: These are still wonderfully characterful and powerful wines from the south of Italy. SUPERIORE.DE
