One may wonder whether Luigi Moio is a professor wearing a winemaker's hat or a winemaker wearing a professor's hat. His vintage presentations are academic in tone, his tasting room is run with the rigour of a lecture theatre, and his vineyards are planted according to criteria that only a mathematician or scholar could fully understand. Quintodecimo's winemaking philosophy, on the other hand, is relatively simple. The best vineyard sites are selected for each individual wine. Soils, sites and microclimates are researched with great care. Nothing is taken for granted.
The Grande Cuvée Luigi Moio is the house's new top white cuvée and a carefully thought-out blend of Fiano, Greco and Falanghina, with the blending ratio varying depending on the vintage. It only comes onto the market after 14 months of bottle ageing. The idea was to create a "super-bianco" that represents the best of southern Italy, and the result is magnificent. About 60% of the wine is fermented in oak barrels and the blend is regularly stirred on the lees. The wine has a velvety, rich texture with silky fruit weight and lingering flavours of summer peach, quince, acacia honey and fragrant tuberose. All this beauty is framed by etched notes of saltiness or crushed shells. This is an outstanding achievement and raises the bar for Italian white wines! SUPERIORE.DE

On the full bouquet we find ripe dark fruits complemented by spiced oranges, sage and mint with a hint of green olive. The finish is long, packed with masses of ripe blackberries, plums and sweet herbal tones, but also perfectly structured and, for all its youthfulness, very balanced and harmonious. On the full bouquet we find ripe dark fruits complemented by spiced oranges, sage and mint with a hint of green olive. On the palate, velvety textures are contrasted by cooling acids, while polished black fruits wash over the senses, leaving a mix of salty minerals and fine tannins with a hint of violet flowers. The finish is long, packed with masses of ripe blackberries, plums and sweet herbal tones, but also perfectly structured and, for all its youthfulness, very balanced and harmonious. The palate is more serene and refined than expected, and savoury too, with a savoury mix of blackberry and cocoa giving way to grippy tannins. The 2018 finishes structured and long, leaving a hint of primary concentration. It is surprisingly fresh and finishes with nuances of sage and lavender. "The 2019 Taurasi Riserva Grand Cru Luigi Moio is a spice box on the nose that captures the imagination with aromas of crushed wild blueberries, black cherries, cloves, lavender and a hint of leather. This wine is a model of purity, silky and serene, with polished waves of ripe red and black fruit carried by a stream of vibrant acidity. A saturation of exotic spices develops towards the end. "How can Italian Cabernet and Merlot blends compete with the top wines from Bordeaux? And our Pinot Nero with the great Burgundies?" asks winemaker and enology professor Luigi Moio in conversation. For all his admiration for French viticulture, he ultimately opted for indigenous grape varieties to realize his own vision in Campania. Grinning, he adds, "I make Aglianico. I don't copy French wines."
Luigi's Quintodecimo winery is located 80 kilometers northeast of Naples in the village of Mirabella Eclano, in the heart of the Taurasi DOCG designation of origin. Here, in the agricultural hinterland of Campania, one does not find the sweltering heat so typical of the region. Instead, the Irpinia area is blessed with endless meadows and green forests covered with chestnut, beech and oak trees.
The climate, due to the Apennine ridge, is characterized by abundant rainfall and mild summer months, allowing the grapes to ripen in ideal conditions on clay rock and dark volcanic soils. The striving winemaker, who earned his doctorate in Burgundy, produces his silky, organic Aglianico red wines here, which are very different from the typical regional selection.
Quintodecimo is part of the new generation of winemakers who have been instrumental in ensuring that Aglianico is no longer known only for its tannic, rustic power in today's wine world, but is finally revered for its elegant, aromatic side. Together with other quality producers, they have helped this ancient grape variety achieve an impressive image transformation over the last twenty years, and today it is truly something to behold.
Since 2001, the winery has been guided by a simple production philosophy that focuses on the preservation of the territory and its autochthonous grape varieties. With the support of his wife Laura, Luigi studied the different growing zones in Irpinia and planted the white variety Falanghina in some lower vineyard sites, while reserving the higher part of the slopes for Aglianico.
In the vineyard and cellar are really carried out only those works necessary for the creation of unique organically produced wines with high territorial expression. In addition to the impressive single vineyards of his Aglianicos and the fresh Falanghina wines, for years Luigi has managed in an impressive way to produce also the best of the white native varieties Greco and Fiano: deep wines with freshness, high complexity and great aging potential.
