“Sereno” Bianco Venezia Giulia IGT 2021
Antonio Bragato, born in Germany but with an absolute Friulian identity, joined forces 20 years ago with Gianni Maccari, who was cellar master at Livio Felluga for many years and founded his own winery Ronco della Rocca at the beginning of the millennium. Maccari, who has a degree in agronomy and Oenologist, is considered one of the best-trained viticultural experts in Friuli. The profound knowledge of his own 12 hectares of vineyards as well as the leased plots and the radical precision in the execution of every operation characterise the clear style and the reliable quality of the wines that Antonio Bragato creates there together with him.
From the 2019 vintage, Bragato's wine experiment enters a new era. Since then, the team has relied on an even more rigorous selection of the oldest vines from the coolest and best sites. The results of the "New Edition" can truly be seen and tasted. They are even more radical in complexity and finesse. We are pleased to be able to offer our customers the smallest editions of these wines, which confirm the many years of work and experience of the two quality fanatics!
In 2021, there was a truly exceptional harvest in Friuli. All the elements - acidity, low PH values, opulent extracts, juiciness, richness of aromas - are impressively present in the white wines. At the same time, the wines appear cool, racy and elegant despite their richness. Antonio Bragato's Sereno 2021, a white cuvée that he has brought to life impressively and even more precisely than ever before after a six-year break, is just as complex and full of tension. On the inviting bouquet, fresh, captivating aromas of pineapple, stone fruits, white flowers, bread crust and white currants. Juicy and very punchy in the drink, with a race and creaminess that is irresistible. The 7-month ageing on the fine lees provides complexity and depth that is exceptional for an "entry wine" into the great world of Bragato wines. SUPERIORE.DE
"Comes from 25-year-old vines. An all-rounder to start with, modelled on the Terlaner Cuvée. Unripe pineapple, one immediately senses the Sauvignon Blanc share, the Friulano rounds off the wine towards the back. Pleasing without being interchangeable." Weinwisser
"Ripe yet delicate pineapple aromas with notes of white flowers and candied lemon. Ripe and juicy, but also gentle and discreetly structured. The lively interplay of mineral freshness and animating acidity makes it hard not to like." James Suckling
"Fragrant, pineapple and mango, passion fruit and elderflower. In the mouth, the wine combines pressure and juiciness, the lively acidity and tactile-mineral motifs give it momentum and tension, the intensity of the (overall still closed) palate structure remains at a high level for quite a long time. May develop into great elegance." Falstaff

The vines from which the Sauvignon Bianco grapes for this delicious wine come are over 30 years old. In the open-hearted bouquet, initially elderflower, white peach, cassis, menthol and gooseberry, then in the background a cool, mineral-smoky note. On the nose, it is taut, precise, dense and juicy to the point, with a cool, very elegant drinking flow as it progresses. The overall experience is flanked by a well-portioned acidity and carried on and on. In the long, full-bodied final, a wonderful aroma and a delicate melting. Beguiling and highly convincing! SUPERIORE.DE
"A floral, intense, slightly spicy aroma, a hint of paprika, but also yellow fruit and wax. In the mouth, a smoothly grounded wine with a slightly phenolic extract filling and a firm acid structure is revealed. The wine has freshness and tension with good density and medium length, it seems made for table use." Falstaff
"This ripe and concentrated Sauvignon blanc is so elegant and finely tuned that it draws you inexorably under its spell. With its aromas of cassis and grapefruit peel and a hint of flint, it is reminiscent of the Loire. Mouth-filling, but so graceful and precise until the long finish with wet stones." James Suckling

The vines from which the Chardonnay grapes for Rio delle Rose come are over 80 years old. Fine, exotic and noticeably mineral bouquet of pome fruit, apple, citrus peel, white flowers, some flint and a hint of banana and pineapple. On the palate driven forward, with nice pressure and juicy draw, then as it progresses this fine minerality again and in the long, complex finish a very delicate, never-ending melt. Very balanced and big - with its subtle restraint and great personality, Rio delle Rose is for us one of the best Chardonnays from Friuli! SUPERIORE.DE
"Dense nose with ripe pome fruit, light flowers, herbal spice and fresh herbs, pink grapefruit, lime zest, fine wood, plus ethereal notes. Powerful in the mouth, yet very balanced thanks to the juicy train, shows itself stoffig with a lot of inner density, remains sharply contoured, enormously juicy, wonderfully dry, very classic without exuberant melting. Rather compact with a cool style." Weinwisser
"Fragrant on the nose, juicy pears, red apple, honeydew melon, lemon zest, hazelnut, meadow herbs. On the palate juicy fruit, spice, fine tannin, creamy core with lively acidity. Pleasantly salty finish, nice length." Falstaff
"An impressively concentrated Chardonnay with excellent structure and lively acidity that makes it seem lighter than it actually is. Wonderful peach fruit and delicate vanilla oak combine with fine tannins in exemplary fashion on the long, crisp and saline finish." James Suckling

Praephylloxera (literally: before phylloxera) comes from Friulano vines over 110 years old. Nutty-floral nose with notes of peach, rose petals, lime blossom, hawthorn, a hint of marzipan. Very dense with full soft body, elegant drinking flow. Great aromatic correspondence and length with fine acidity and light tannin on the finish. SUPERIORE.DE
"100% Tocai Friulano from up to 110-year-old vines with no roots. The mineral, well-founded bouquet reveals wonderful floral notes reminiscent of hawthorn and light flowers, delicately framed by ethereal notes, but also yellow stone fruit such as yellow peach compote and a touch of gooseberry. In the mouth it really explodes with a gigantic melt and then also shows delicate notes of white roses with fine acidity, seems to unite opposites, spicy final and you can literally feel the power and concentration of the old, rootless vines." Weinwisser
"Pleasant on the nose, fresh lemons, gooseberries, peach, hay, almonds, subtle marzipan. On the palate elegant with fine acidity, fresh fruit, lemons, gooseberries, fine spice and nice tannin on the finish. A versatile food companion that can still mature." Falstaff
"You could almost mistake this Friulano from old vines for a great Chardonnay from a warmer region (think low acidity). The chalky minerality and fine oak give structure and balance to this remarkable wine, the finish is long and complex with a hint of rose." James Suckling

Antonio Bragato had a dream early on - he wanted to become a négociant, i.e. to conceive and produce noble Italian wines of the absolute top class, as in the French wine strongholds of Burgundy and Bordeaux. His heart's desire finally came true in 2004. Since then, the owner of the Berlin cult Italian Il Calice, who was born in Swabia but has remained Italian in heart and soul, has been producing his own wines in his home region of Friuli. In close cooperation with partner Gianni Maccari, high-quality terroir wines have been produced for 20 years, in which Bragato's ideas and concepts are reflected. The desire of the "architect" of the Bragato wines to have a say in the wine market is the logical consequence of his professional development. The meticulous selection work of many years has gradually made the "ambassador of Italian wine in Germany" - as the producer sees himself - a profound connoisseur of the best growing regions as well as their most outstanding winemakers and their tried and tested viticultural techniques.
Antonio Bragato does not own any vines. He almost exclusively uses grapes that grow in the near-natural vineyard of his partner Maccari, Ronco della Rocca. The winery is located in the Colli Orientali del Friuli wine-growing region. The Rocca Bernarda site is only a few hundred metres away from the Cru single vineyard Rosazzo. Gianni Maccari, one of Friuli's best-trained viticultural experts, not only takes care of the vines, but is also responsible for advising and supervising the work in the cellar. Before setting up his own estate, the studied oenologist and agronomist was responsible for Livio Felluga's production for twenty years. The company, which is based in Cormòns, has now stood for wine production at the highest level for five generations.
Good knowledge of the work in the vineyard, but also new ways of biodynamics and a radical precision in the execution of each operation characterise the clear style and the reliable quality of the Bragato wines. The small range is divided into two lines. The style of the Linea Classica wines, vinified exclusively in stainless steel tanks under guided fermentation by spontaneous yeast strains (pied de cuve) and drinkable at an early stage, was developed in the style of classic Friulian white wines and focuses on freshness and minerality. The single-varietal growths are "carried by the pure expression of native grape varieties" (A. Bragato). In order to let the wines mature unadulterated and safely in the bottle, the ambitious expert duo uses Diam cork, a high-quality high-tech product that - as proven by regular parallel tastings over eight years - offers all the advantages of a natural cork with almost complete freedom from defects.
