Verdicchio di Matelica DOC 2023
Italy connoisseur and wine critic Ian D'Agata writes about the grape variety in his book "Native Wine Grapes of Italy": "Verdicchio is arguably Italy's greatest indigenous white grape variety. This statement may come as a surprise to those who have only tasted neutral or watery Verdicchio wines, sometimes even bottled in incredible amphora-shaped bottles."

Merlot Marche IGT 2020
Bisci not only produces excellent Verdicchio, but also very appealing Rosso, which is now made from 100% Merlot. With the best value wine in the Marche winery's range, it has achieved a great success: Fascinating aromas of red berries, precious wood and herbs, with a subtle, smoky component in the background. Precise and taut on the palate, with a wonderful primary fruity core, framed by liquorice and a dried bouquet of Mediterranean herbs. A warm red for the unusual days of the week. SUPERIORE.DE

“Villa Castiglioni” Rosso Marche IGT 2018
Amber-coloured red. Finesse-rich notes of game, tobacco and undergrowth frame the sour cherry on the nose. Soft and ripe on the palate, very precise and pure, with medium pressure and well-proportioned tannins that flank a wonderfully long finish. 100% Sangiovese from the Marche, 100% performance from Bisci! Bringing the minerality and acidity of Verdicchio into perfect balance is what the Bisci winery has been doing for years to thrill the wine scene and outshine the competition. Wine critic Ian D'Agata affirms: "Bisci is a heavyweight in the small DOC Verdicchio di Matelica. Here, greatness and quality go hand in hand and these Verdicchio wines are among the best in the region."
Looking at the winery's consistent wine style, it's clear why its success is no accident. From the beginning, founder Giuseppe Bisci wanted to bring tasteful and authentic Verdicchio wines to the market that would not be a victim of fashionable trends. For him, only the best situated vineyards in the historic DOC Verdicchio di Matelica came into question. With the support of his brother Pierino, he planted south-facing vineyards on the foothills of Monte San Vicino in the 1970s.
Today, Giuseppe's son Tito Bisci and the oenologist Aroldo Bellelli drive the business forward in a timeless way between the provinces of Macerata and Ancona. Verdicchio, Merlot and Sangiovese are farmed at an altitude of 300-350 metres using organic farming methods on the limestone and clay soils of the stunning Alta Vallesina valley. Tucked away in the Apennines, the ripening grapes benefit from warm, long summer days and cool nights that produce wines with expressive acidity and the characteristic stimulating minerality.
While temperature fluctuations in the vineyard are beneficial, the wine should be kept as constant as possible from a thermal point of view during the ripening period. This is done with the help of antique cement tanks, which reflect the classic winemaking of the area and are used instead of the fashionable use of wooden barrels. "I want to stick to cement as far as winemaking is concerned," the oenologist tells us in conversation, and continues enthusiastically: "and the great thing was that the Bisci family replied to me: Aroldo, you are right, we are with you. Keep going in this direction. We'll stick to cement".
The winery has always produced wood-free, terroir-driven quality wines, and a minimally intrusive working philosophy in the vineyard and cellar ultimately led to the potential of the vineyards chosen by the founder being able to fully develop. It is therefore obvious why restaurants and wine merchants are clamouring for these impressive wines. While the basic Verdicchio is wonderfully fresh and drinkable, the spicy and supple single-vineyard Verdicchio di Matelica Vigneto di Fogliano is evidence of extraordinary ageing potential. Finally, the winery's Marche Rosso, a blend of Sangiovese and Merlot, rounds off the coveted range in the style of the top class. SUPERIORE.DE
