Wines from Piedmont

Only 2,500 bottles of the debut vintage were filled. Eós, named after the Greek goddess of dawn, is the result of a selection of the best Erbaluce grapes from our own vineyards on the volcanic porphyry soils of Boca. The grapes were pressed slowly with a vertical press (torchio) without being crushed or destemmed (whole bunch press). The juice was then poured into large Slavonian oak barrels, where it was aged on the lees for a year. This was followed by a further year of refinement in the barrel and in the bottle. Eós is rich, complex, creamy, with a long mineral finish and a fresh acidity that keeps it in marvellous harmony. One of the very great and rare white wines of Alto Piemonte. SUPERIORE.DE

The ruby red Sito Moresco is Angelo Gaja's "everyday wine" (o-tone) and shows itself emphatically fresh and fruity and since the 2020 vintage consists only of Barbera and Nebbiolo from plots of the best Barolo and Barbaresco sites. The bouquet has aromas of ripe cherries and berries, underpinned by fine spicy notes. The rich taste spreads powerfully with densely woven tannins, mineral in the long final. SUPERIORE.DE

Ceretto's entry-level Barbaresco comes from different sites, mostly younger vines from Asili (35%) and the lower part of Bernadot (65%). Bright, elegant ruby red. It has full energy and vivacity and offers excellent persistence and remarkable balance. On the nose, sweet red cherry, mint, pine, liquorice and candied orange peel. Taut and ferruginous on the palate, very juicy, salty, stretches precisely across the tongue, with some pressure, considerable juicy-long finish. Oltre in Vallo - a noble spirit aged for 24 months in oak casks and 6 months in casks of single malt Scotch whisky. It combines the Highlands and Monferrato, because the casks come from the oldest and most renowned distilleries in Scotland: Lagavulin, Caol Ila and Mortlach, which wrote the history of the best Scotch Whisky.

Grappa Riserva Oltre il di Lidia is a refined blend of the marcs of Piedmont's Barbera and Moscato grapes. DiLidia matures in barrels previously used for Marsala production in the Canelli wineries in Sicily. A tradition from the fifties and sixties, preserved and continued by Lidia Canelles and Paolo Berta.

The result is this wonderful distillate with aromatic marsala notes and a complex taste. In addition, classic Muscat aromas and the structure-giving typicality of Barbera. SUPERIORE.DE

The single-vineyard Barbaresco Riserva Ovello is, as always, one of the outstanding wines in this series. It shows the energy and tension so typical of this site, but with a slightly more mature profile than is the norm. Ovello dives straight into the volatile Nebbiolo aromas, with a focus on liquorice, tar, blue flowers and campfire ash. The palate is full-bodied, with flavours of crushed raspberries, juicy Marasca cherries, liquorice and nutmeg as well as firm, tight-knit tannins. The fresh acidity provides tension and balance. Pajé is a small vineyard near the village of Barbaresco, whose calcareous soils generally produce bright and floral wines and this wine fulfils this expectation in an impressive way, combined with an already remarkable density, which it only gradually reveals. On the nose, it shows intensity and purity, with penetrating aromas of red fruits. The attack is supple, bright but weighty and very focussed. Pora overwhelms with incredible complexity and a variety of aromas ranging from stone fruit, raspberries and liquorice to dried flowers, spices and white truffle. Despite all its lush fruit, the Pora has a good structural foundation. Juicy notes of dark cherries, plums, espresso, menthol and liquorice unfold in this forward, wonderfully inviting Riserva from the Produttori. The wine overflows with flavours, but its lean and polished personality continues on the palate. Multi-layered, exciting and still quite youthfully austere today, it needs a few years to relax and develop. SUPERIORE.DE

Bussia 2019 is a powerful, intense wine that shows great depth and intensity, with a powerful tannin that gives the wine its masculine, virile personality. Notes of black cherry, wood smoke, liquorice, leather, menthol, pine, scorched earth and pebbles unfold in the glass. Although it is already very expressive, it still needs some time in the bottle so that the tannins can calm down a little. Of the three Baroli from Pecchenino, Le Coste di Monforte shows the greatest focus and the greatest spiciness. Compared to this wine, the other two wines are significantly softer in their aromatic focus. Its fruit comes from a vineyard of just under one hectare at an altitude of 450 metres. Le Coste di Monforte offers dark fruits, balsamic herbs, spices, campfire ash and ferruginous earth in beautifully balanced proportions. This wine has a long maceration period of 60 days (at 28 degrees Celsius), which is concluded with 36 months of ageing in oak barrels. This gives the wine its rich flavour profile. SUPERIORE.DE

Rio Sordo Riserva is particularly dense, rich and balanced. On the nose we find roses, spices and raspberries. Very complex on the palate, with marvellous depth and juiciness. Rio Sordo offers a taut and sharp fruit on the nose, which is rounded off with some tannin and crispness on the finish. Barolo Garretti is a wine from the slopes of the La Spinetta estate in Grinzane Cavour. These grapes were previously used in Barolo Campé. It is bold, racy and super-expressive. Juicy dark cherry, lavender, spices, menthol, red flowers, liquorice and French oak come together in this creamy, racy wine from La Spinetta. Garretti captures all the richness and pedigree of the vintage in a forward, juicy style that is sure to find many admirers. Pisapola from the vineyard of the same name in the municipality of Verduno offers a beautiful richness of texture and an impressive softness. This wine is open and honest, with an approachable style that highlights red cherries, undergrowth, wild berries and roses in a very harmonious way. The tannin is precisely measured, and on the finish, its harmony and balance are again inspiring. The bouquet is subtle and elegant, although the overall intensity of the wine is lower compared to some of the better-known comuni or villages in the Barolo appellation. Muncagota is rich, deep and super-expressive every year, hitting all the right notes. Black cherry, plum, spice, leather and liquorice emerge, but all very hesitantly and with plenty of aeration, better: with further bottle ageing.
