First bottled in 1967, the Masseria comes from a vineyard in Bricco di Neive and is essentially vinified and aged like a Barolo. Since the 2018 vintage, it now comes from a small parcel that used to belong to the Barbaresco winery Socré, and it is now deliberately released a year later to provide more harmony and balance.

Floral and spicy notes meld with a core of rich, generous fruit in a generous Barbaresco based on pure resonance. Masseria is vinified and aged like Vietti's single-vineyard Barolos. This means long fermentation, six months in French oak and more than two years in barrique. Here, everything is in its place and there is more than enough of it: freshness, fruit, acidity, tannin, and the whole paired with a finesse that is unparalleled and that one would rather expect in Burgundy or Etna. Over the years, Roberto Voerzio has changed his winemaking to a gentler extraction and reduced the influence of French oak, making the purity of the fruit very expressive. What is remarkable about all his wines is his non-interventionist approach. In addition, up to two-thirds of each bunch is cut away in the vineyard to ensure even ripening of the remaining grapes. Roberto also chooses different bottle formats to present each wine as accurately as possible.

Sarmassa, for example, is one of his Barolo wines, which he bottles exclusively in magnum formats. Sarmassa is very similar to the style of Cerequio, which is not surprising as the vineyards are close together. It is luxurious and radiant, with a gorgeous inner perfume, bright red fruits and fine, silky tannins that flow from the glass, reflecting a seamless, soft expression of Nebbiolo. The exceptionally long and pure finish is reminiscent of a variety of freshly cut flowers. Barolo Sarmassa is still quite closed today and will mature at a snail's pace in magnum format compared to the other wines of this vintage. Barolo Cerequio is darker and richer than the Cannubi, but it too shows plenty of elegance in its dark cherries, plums, spices, cocoa and roasted coffee beans. Aromatics, fruit and structure are very well balanced in this delicious medium to full-bodied Barolo. As is so often the case with this bottling, the voice of Cerequio comes into its own. The grapes come from the single vineyard MGA Rabajà in the municipality of Barbaresco. 2019 is a retro vintage, so to speak, as it marks a return for Vietti, who vinified Rabajà back in the 1980s. The soils are calcareous and clayey, with a south/south-west exposure and an altitude of around 235-315 metres above sea level. The average age of the vines is 51 years and they are cultivated according to the Guyot system. Intense garnet red colour. Opulent and delicate on the nose with floral scents of rosehips and violets and ripe black cherry. Amazingly fresh and enveloping for a mature Riserva from the very first sip. The tannins are ripe, soft, silky and wonderfully integrated, giving the wine a great structure and elegance. The grapes for the Granbussia, which is only produced in the best years with just 3,000 bottles, come from the best and oldest vines of the Romirasco, Colonnello and Cicala vineyards. It remains in the cellar for at least 9 years before being put on sale. Finest nebbiolo nose with notes of anise, truffle, leather and wild berries. Warm and fine on the palate, it shows a terrific aroma and depth with all its freshness. This wine has to be experienced and it is very difficult to describe it in all its parts. For us, it is one of the greatest Barolos of the entire appellation, along with Villero by Vietti and Vite Talin by Sandrone. SUPERIORE.DE

At the very top of the Serradenari parcel, the fruit grows for an exceptional Barolo, with which the young winemaker Giulia Negri has truly created a monument to herself. Marassio clearly benefits from the cool climate of Piedmont's high altitudes and will therefore hardly change its character even if the climate continues to change.

Rose petals, fresh cherry mousse and fine spicy notes on the nose. Lively yet precise on the palate, with an aristocratic coolness in which cherries, spices and forest floor are concealed with great restraint and only hesitantly reveal their complexity. The tannins are still demanding and gripping when young, but you can already sense the finesse and elegance that this great wine will confidently display in the glass as it matures, without ever becoming loud. Barolo Ornato is a great wine every year. With its wild herbs, minerals and ferrous notes, it captures the true character of Serralunga. Its bouquet shows small berry fruits and cassis, framed by gravel, forest floor, blue flowers and candied orange peel. The wine also has a dusty, mineral note and is very intense both on the nose and on the palate. Ornato starts with finely integrated tannins and an acidity that sustains all these fruit flavours. The Barolo Falletto from the vineyard of the same name in Serralunga, where the winery is located, has a wonderfully complex and racy personality. It impresses with the depth and intensity of its dark fruit and the outstanding overall balance that can only be found in this coveted vineyard. Its spectrum ranges from small dark berries to menthol, flowers and liquorice through to a present yet consistently elegant tannin. It is a particularly precise and direct Barolo, without being loud. However, its full character, variety of flavours and finesse will only really come to the fore with further bottle ageing. SUPERIORE.DE
