“L’Insieme” VdT s.a. (2020)
"L'Insieme" is a small but concrete project of eco-solidarity. Just seven winegrowers from the Langhe have come together to support concrete solidarity projects every year with a part of the yield. The members include Elio Altare, Gianfranco Alessandria, Giuliano Corino, Federico Grasso, Giulio e Paolo Morando, Lorenzo Revello and Mauro Veglio. Under the label of the same name (L'Insieme: together, together, together), the wine producers support solidarity projects all over the world with 5.16 euros per bottled wine.
In the past years, L'Insieme donated over half a million euros to forty-two different projects. Today they donate about 60,000 euros a year. Whether it is building a childcare facility for single mothers in Alba, funding the development of schools in Kenya or improving hiking trails along the Tanaro River, the goal is to support national and international communities.
The deep dark L'Insieme combines the typical grapes of the Langa (Nebbiolo, Barbera, Dolcetto) with the racy spiciness of the Cabernet. A wine with a firm, powerful structure, harmoniously rounded tannins, a delicate melt and a beautiful finish. SUPERIORE.DE

“Giàrborina” Rosso Langhe DOC 2020
This wine is practically a Barolo, except for the fact that it is released a year earlier. Langhe Giàrborina draws its fruit from the top Arborina site in La Morra. Blackberries and plums are surrounded by smoke, tar and black liquorice in the most refined and elegant way. A magnificent, single-varietal Nebbiolo, impeccably balanced, impressively elegant and with a promising future. SUPERIORE.DE
"This wine is a 100% Nebbiolo, made like a Barolo but released a year earlier. This wine always gives you a good idea of what to expect the following year when the Barolos are actually released. The Elio Altare 2020 Langhe Giàrborina definitely hints at warmer, sun-drenched fruit with ripe cherry flavours and a fairly soft texture. Maceration times have been shortened and barrel ageing fine-tuned to adapt to the warm fruit of the vintage. This vintage is more approachable overall." Wine Advocate
"The Langhe Giarborina 2020 is bright and exuberant in the glass, with striking aromatic presence and plenty of class. The purity of the aromas is simply irresistible. Crushed red berry fruit, mint, blood orange, chalk and white pepper give the 2020 its distinctive perfume. A little new oak still needs to integrate, but that shouldn't be a problem in a few years." Barolo DOCG 2020
It goes without saying, but this is "only" the Altare family's entry-level Barolo from four different vineyards, enhanced this year by the best grapes from Cerretta Vigna Bricco, which was not produced in 2020. Racy and supple, with terrificpurity and fine balance, the 2020 is downright galactic. Red berries, flowers, mint, liquorice and rose petals on the nose. A highly linear personality on the palate with flavours of sour cherry, aniseed, crushed rock and blue flowers. A captivating Barolo as it is written in the book and for us one of the greatest of the vintage! SUPERIORE.DE
"The Barolo 2020 is an elegant wine with class that benefits from the addition of the best batches of Cerretta, which was not bottled in 2020. Muscular, incisive tannins envelop a core of dark red fruit, cedar, mint, tobacco and spice. The 2020 is rich and explosive and medium-bodied, a great wine. The vineyard sites are Sarmassa, Pernanno, Bricco Ambrogio and Cerretta. Even after all these years, Altare Barolo remains one of the unheralded stars of Piedmont." Vinous
"Showing bright fruit freshness and energy, the Elio Altare 2020 Barolo is packed with cherry, wild currant, dried apricot and orange peel. The wine offers volume and texture, more so than your standard Barolo, with soft layers and pretty accessibility. There is a hint of butter biscuit too. The tannins are almost resolved, and you don't need to wait long to open one." Wine Advocate

Limitation of 6 articles per customer“La Villa” Rosso Langhe DOC 2020
La Villa a blend of Nebbiolo and Barbera grapes with a wide bouquet of sour cherries and violets, in whose taste all components are precisely measured. Good fruit, polished tannin, fine acidity and a spicy finish. SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2020 La Villa is a deep, powerful wine that seems to show a bit more Barbera character in its depth and overall textural intensity. Black cherry, plum, cloves and rose petal. There's a ton of energy here, but it is all directed inwards, making the wine feel very closed and quite reticent." Vinous
"The 2020 Langhe Rosso La Villa is a blend of 60% Barbera (from the Larigi Vineyard) and 40% Nebbiolo (from Arborina). Production is limited to just 1,200 bottles. Like the Giàrborina, this wine exudes a sense of generosity and accessibility that comes with warm-vintage fruit. That impression is amplified in this case, given the presence of Barbera, a grape that loves hot growing conditions and is naturally rich and fruity per se. This wine shows volume and intensity." “Larigi” Rosso Langhe DOC 2020
The extremely juicy, single-varietal Barbera Larigi is a dream and unfortunately still underestimated. Plum, cherry, a little chocolate and leather caress the palate, the wine leads into a long and fresh finish and has completely thrilled us! SUPERIORE.DE
"The Elio Altare 2020 Langhe Rosso Larigi is 100% Barbera, with just three barriques (or 900 bottles) produced. Yields were reduced because some of the vines suffer from the floral disease Flavescence dorée, which is unfortunately popping up throughout the region. These results are very rich and plump with ripe fruit flavors and blackberry preserves. The wine is very generous and soft in texture." Wine Advocate
"The 2020 Larigi is deep and fleshy, with terrific depth and tons of nuance. Super-ripe dark cherry, red plum, mocha, spice, new leather and lavender infuse the 2020 with gorgeous textural depth. Plush and energetic, the 2020 offers terrific balance, with less opulence and a bit more energy than some previous editions. It's a style I admire quite a bit. Sadly, there are just three barrels to go around." Vinous

“La Villa” Rosso Langhe DOC 2021
La Villa needs time to fully develop. The interplay of the 40% Barbera fruit with the flavours and structure of the 60% Nebbiolo once again proves to be seductive. Sweet floral notes merge with cedar wood, aniseed and bright red fruit. On the palate, La Villa is simply beguilingly silky, yet energetic and always full of freshness as it progresses. For all its well-dosed opulence, it always remains elegant and once it has unfolded, it is irresistibly good. SUPERIORE.DE
"La Villa 2021 is the Barbera/Nebbiolo blend from Altare. It is one of the wines in its group that never fails to impress. A fascinating blend. Smooth and lively, with plenty of energy, La Villa shines in 2021." Vinous

“Giàrborina” Rosso Langhe DOC 2021
Giarborina is not only another breathtaking wine from Altare, but also actually a Barolo that comes to market just one year earlier and is therefore more open and accessible. Its dramatic aromatics and finely interwoven fruit are the hallmarks of the exceptional 2021 vintage, in which the Altare family has captured the full potential of the year. Giarborina is a regal, aristocratic wine that packs a punch and its polished tannins add to the wine's appeal. SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2021 Langhe Giarborina is Altare's Nebbiolo, aged with a shorter maceration and less time in wood - as always, 100% from new oak. Bright and articulate on the palate, with compelling energy, the 2021 is wonderfully refined from start to finish. Crushed rose petals, cedar wood, spices, tobacco and mint adorn the lively finish. Give the still youthful tannins a few years to unwind." Vinous

“Larigi” Rosso Langhe DOC 2021
Langhe Rosso Larigi is a classic expression of the Barbera grape from the family's historic vineyards in La Morra. It displays a dark concentration of colour and a generous weight of fruit with powerful aromas of plum, candied cherry and baked blackberry. The wine is aged for 18 months in barriques and offers a wealth of spicy flavours and roasted aromas. There are only 3 barrels or 900 bottles of this wine! SUPERIORE.DE
"Dark ruby red colour with purple reflections. Warm, savoury bouquet of juicy cherries and plums on a carpet of myrrh, coffee and cigar box. Polished on the palate, with juicy fruit, fine tannins, harmonious and persistent." Falstaff
"The Larigi 2021 is noble, elegant and highly polished. Silky tannins envelop a core of red cherry and plum fruit. Spices, new leather, cedar wood and blood orange meld together. The 2021 is one of the more refined, medium-bodied Larigis I've ever tasted here. The purity of the fruit is convincing." Vinous

Barolo “Cerretta Vigna Bricco” Riserva DOCG 2017
Firmly anchored in La Morra, Elio Altare has been vinifying a Barolo in Serralunga d'Alba on a rented plot for a few years, vinified and bottled separately. A fascinating and powerful Nebbiolo with elegant fruit, truffle, leather and floral aromas. Full-bodied, juicy and long on the palate, with a remarkably elegant tannin structure. SUPERIORE.DE
"Mid to deep ruby with orange tinges. Amazing depth. There are hints of mint and cardamon and a suggestion of spice. Brooding and a little rich but without being sweet. Holds back on the palate, but at the same time is transparent and layered. Long, firm, polished tannins. Still not ready by far." Jancis Robinson
"This red wine offers a blend of plum, black cherry, leather, liquorice and spice aromas. Notes of dried fig and chocolate add an exotic touch, while it finishes fresh and invigorating, with fine balance and length." Wine Spectator
"Lots of spice with flowers. Bloody and iron undertones. Full and chewy with plenty of structure. Juicy and flavorful. Very structured with lots of tannins. Needs time to soften. Aged for two years in bottle. Muscular and unique. Drink after 2027." James Suckling
"The 2017 Barolo Riserva Cerretta Vigna Bricco is pliant and creamy, with all of the depth of Serralunga backing it up. Black cherry, plum and spice all build in a sumptuous, full-bodied Barolo that captures the best the vintage had to offer. Dark fruit, smoke, game, licorice and incense add layers of dimension as the 2017 starts to open in the glass. Let's see what happens here." Vinous
"The Elio Altare 2017 Barolo Riserva Cerretta Vigna Bricco is extremely generous and rich, owing to the very hot and dry growing season. This Riserva opens to rich black fruit, plum and blackcurrant. The fruit is framed by tarry smoke and spice. The wine is very firm and structured to the palate, with an ample, full-bodied style that concludes with a hint of velvety softness." Wine Advocate
"Dark shining, slightly cloudy ruby red. In the nose of ripe cranberries, black cherries, some plums, in addition fine noble wood, reminds in the reverberation discreetly of milk chocolate. On the palate with a noble balsamic tone, hearty, with ripe dark berry fruit, shows proper pressure, in the finish abundant and still young tannin." Falstaff

Barolo “Arborina” DOCG 2020
Deep, dark, sparkling ruby colour with a fine garnet rim. The bouquet is a colourful bouquet of black cherry, elderberry, graphite and a strong cassis note. On the powerful palate, the black fruits again, plus a wonderful balance and freshness with a picture-book tannin that rounds off the perfect impression. Fine energy and harmony. SUPERIORE.DE
"Bright ruby colour with a fine garnet rim. Very intense and appealing nose, full of dark cherries, blackberries and fresh rose petals. Polished and with plenty of finely woven tannins, opens up in many layers, may seem a little soft for a Barolo, but has great presence and very good drinking flow." Falstaff
"Aromas of vanilla, resin and toasty oak lead off, followed by reticent flavors of cherry, raspberry, underbrush and iron. This comes together on the finish yet will require a few years to absorb the oak." Wine Spectator
"The Elio Altare 2020 Barolo Arborina makes a bright first impression with lots of cherry fruit, cranberry and tart berry nuances. It offers underripe flavours, which are much appreciated in a hot vintage like this. A hint of minerality adds spiciness in the form of wet stone or petrichor. The Arborina shows the classic Nebbiolo flavours, with good volume, velvety tannins and obvious freshness." Wine Advocate
"The Barolo Arborina 2020 is a bright, concentrated wine that shows all the energy typical of the La Morra vineyard, especially in its driving tannin profile. Dark cherry, spice, leather, menthol and dried flowers come alive in the glass. Floral and spicy notes give it aromatic presence and breadth on the finish. I would give this wine a few years to mature." Vinous

"The Elio Altare 2018 Barolo Riserva Cerretta has plenty of dark blackberry flavours complemented by spicy oak, all to great effect. The oak continues on the palate and in the tannins with roasted spices, nutmeg and vanilla pods." Wine Advocate
"The Barolo Riserva Cerretta Vigna Bricco 2018 is a big, powerful wine that shows the full range of Serralunga. Black cherry, smoke, tobacco, gravel, liquorice and incense open up to reveal a Barolo of enormous depth and resonance. The Cerretta clearly stands out in this range due to its size, but the whole works so well. The 2018 is still developing. It is very promising." Vinous

The Barolo Cannubi with its interpretation of the Nebbiolo grape, probably the purest at Altare, has been the ambitious project of daughter Silvia since 2011 and represents an exciting rounding off of the already almost unique collection. Sparkling, brightening ruby garnet. A very clear and inviting nose, smelling of ripe raspberries and plums, a little rose petals, subtle hints of cloves in the background. Round and balanced on the palate, plump ripe fruit, then starts with bundled, dense tannin, fills the palate full, a firework of spices in the final. SUPERIORE.DE
"Bright, radiant ruby garnet. Exciting nose of ripe raspberries, ripe cranberries, in addition noble nuances of black tea, fine undergrowth in the reverberation. At first juicy and tightly woven on the palate, opens profoundly and long, with very great tension, firm pressure in the final, pure Nebbiolo elegance." Falstaff
"The 2018 Barolo Cannubi is silky and gracious, and yet there is a good deal of stuffing behind all of that Cannubi finesse. Crushed rose petal, mint, sweet dried cherry and licorice build with a bit of time. It's all class and pedigree here. Impressive." Vinous
"Fluid and elegant, boasting strawberry, cherry, rose, mineral, spice and wild herb aromas and flavors. Firm, harmonious and long, with finely wrought tannins and a graceful profile." Wine Spectator
"This is a collectors' wine that owes its high bottle price to the prestige of the Cannubi cru and availability. A mere 1,500 bottles were produced of the Elio Altare 2018 Barolo Cannubi. The Altare family was able to get a lease on this special vineyard, and the first vintage made was 2011. This wine shows classic elegance, a graceful bouquet and fine tannins that give structure to the wine's mid–weight texture." Wine Advocate

Barolo Cannubi DOCG 2019
"Lustrous mid ruby. Perfumed and almost a little exotic and very fine. Complex, super inviting and with a whisper of oak, but still holding back a little. A thick layer of fine tannins over fresh raspberry fruit. Such fine but powerful tannins! Amazing length." Jancis Robinson
"Cherry and menthol are the main themes of this elegant red wine, which is rounded off by notes of plum, iron, spice and tobacco. It is balanced, with a long, juicy finish." Wine Spectator
"With only 2,500 bottles released from three barrels, this is a gorgeous interpretation of Nebbiolo. The Elio Altare 2019 Barolo Cannubi is slender in form but rich and long lasting on the palate. The wine reveals tones of wild berry, crushed rose and exotic spice." Wine Advocate
"The 2019 Barolo Cannubi shows why this site is so magical. It offers all the suppleness that Cannubi is so known for, but married to the natural tension of the year. Sweet red cherry, kirsch, cinnamon, blood orange and mint open nicely in the glass. With its gorgeous inner perfume and total sensuality, the Cannubi is an absolute winner." Vinous
"Lots of crushed stone, hints of salted caramel, and fresh flowers. Some crab apple and cranberries. Medium-bodied with plenty of tannins, but not aggressive. Rough velvet. Give this time. Better after 2028." James Suckling
"Bright ruby garnet. In the nose noble and catchy, of juicy blood orange, wild strawberries, with fine floral components, sweet raspberries and bright spice. On the palate very compact and very powerful, shows very elegantly woven and with tightly woven tannins, builds for a long time without being overbearing, big." Falstaff

The Barolo Cannubi, probably Altare 's purest interpretation of the Nebbiolo grape, has been daughter Silvia's ambitious project since 2011 and is an exciting addition to what is already an almost unique collection. Sparkling, bright ruby-garnet colour. Very clear and inviting nose, with aromas of ripe raspberries and plums, some rose petals and a subtle hint of cloves in the background. Round and balanced on the palate, full-bodied ripe fruit, then takes off with bundled, dense tannins, fills the palate, a firework of spices on the final. SUPERIORE.DE
"Bright, medium-dense ruby-garnet colour. Presents itself with notes of blood orange, raspberry and some plum. Plucky, full-bodied tannins with a firm core, coated in sweet enamel, full-bodied pressure on the final, still very young overall." Falstaff
"Plum, cherry, sandalwood, vanilla and toasty oak flavors meld into the rich texture of this mellow red. Broad on the palate, with terrific balance and a lingering aftertaste of fruit and sweet spices. Leaves you with a burst of black pepper." Wine Spectator
"The Elio Altare 2020 Barolo Cannubi takes a modernist approach to the MGA with some oak spice, tar and liquorice surrounding firm, crunchy cherries and red fruits. The combination of fruit and oak spice gives this wine power, texture and lift and then folds over the palate with richness and beautiful volume." Wine Advocate
"The Barolo Cannubi 2020 is of great class. Floral, soaring aromas merge with a core of dark, red fruit. Medium-bodied and nuanced, with plenty of youthful tannin, the 2020 is bursting with energy and all the classicism that is so typical of this site, enhanced by Altare's approach today, which combines textural richness with vibrancy. Today, the Cannubi is the most restrained of the 2020 Altare Barolos - probably a good sign for its future." Vinous

Deep dark sparkling ruby with a fine garnet rim. On the nose, a colourful bouquet of black cherry, elderberry, graphite and a strong cassis note. On the powerful palate, the black fruits again, plus a wonderful balance and freshness with a picture-book tannin that further rounds off the perfect impression. Fine energy and harmony. SUPERIORE.DE
"Translucent ruby. Perfumed raspberry with lift. Fragrant and long and with a layer of long, fine-ground tannins that go on and on. Elegant but still compact, while the tannins add depth as they cling to the elegant, fragrant fruit." Jancis Robinson
"A broad, solidly built red with plum and cherry fruit framed by vanilla, caramel, leather and menthol accents. It shows muscular tannins that unfold on the long, spicy finish." Wine Spectator
"The 2019 Barolo Arborina is laced with dark cherry, graphite, dried flowers and licorice. It is an especially dark, almost somber Arborina, with huge, incisive tannins that are quite dominant at this stage. It will be interesting to see how the 2019 ages. Based on several decades of tasting these wines, I think it will age quite well, but remain a brooding powerhouse." Vinous
"Radiant ruby garnet. Fragrant nose, finely drawn, slightly earthy, wild strawberries, blood orange, dried rose petal, cool. On the palate with pithy, very juicy tannin, powerful, elegant, precise, pleasantly mouthwatering on the final." Falstaff
"With fruit from the Altare family's historic vineyard, with rows that descend from the panoramic terrace in front of the tasting room, comes the 2019 Barolo Arborina. This wine boasts a unique flavor profile with more emphasis on tart fruit, cassis and crisp cherry. The wine is soft and velvety to the palate, and it shows finely integrated tannins coupled with a solid textural frame. Arborina is not one of the historic crus of the appellation, but it is an excellent site that is celebrated for its consistent wines." Wine Advocate
"Transparent and bright with floral, orange peel and lavender. Medium to full body. Firm and racy tannins. Chewy and velvety. Purity is the right word to describe it. Drink after 2028." James Suckling

The grapes of UnoPerUno come from the cru vineyards Arborina in La Morra, Cannubi in Barolo, Pernanno in Castiglione Falletto, Sarmassa in Barolo and Cerretta in Serralunga d'Alba and are individually destemmed. As a result of this intensive manual work, only 1,500 bottles of this exceptional wine are sold in well-stocked specialist shops, and only in the best vintages. Due to the manual destemming, no green overtones of the stems get into the mash, making the tannins silkier and creamier than in the conventional process. The result is something to be savoured: UnoperUno has a high fruit intensity, incredible depth and structure, and is a benchmark of the appellation every year in its purity and clarity on the nose and palate. SUPERIORE.DE
"Sparkling, intense ruby garnet. Appealing and profound nose, opens with notes of ripe plums and black cherries, some pomegranate and blood orange. Shows lots of plump fruit on the attack, opens with lots of dense, smoothly integrated tannin, creamy, sweet melting on the final." Falstaff
"The 2017 Barolo Unoperuno is sensual, silky and nuanced. Crushed red berry fruit, blood orange, spice, mint and rose petal are some of the aromas and flavors that grace this exquisite, translucent Barolo. Heady and exotic from the first taste, the 2017 is vivid and beautiful, with silky tannins that add to its appeal. The Unoperuno is a selection of grapes, meticulously destemmed, from all of the Altare vineyards. Vinification in small lots, in barrel, has made a big difference here. In 2017, the Unoperuno is hugely appealing." Vinous
"The Elio Altare 2017 Barolo Unoperuno (with each berry selected "one by one") draws its fruit from Arborina in La Morra, Cannubi in Barolo, Pernanno in Castiglione Falletto, Sarmassa in Barolo and Cerretta in Serralunga d'Alba. The wine reveals dark and saturated fruit, but the characteristic that stands out in this wine is its slightly spicy quality, with dried blackberry, ginger and cinnamon stick. This Barolo imparts a soft and thickly textured approach that wraps thickly over the palate." Wine Advocateread more- Grape Variety: 100% Nebbiolo

"Aromas of vanilla, resin and toasted oak start things off, followed by restrained flavours of cherry, raspberry, undergrowth and iron. It comes together on the finish, but needs a few more years to absorb the oak." Wine Spectator

A typical visit to the family business Elio Altare. Silvia, the older of the two daughters is already the boss. She has prepared everything and welcomes the guests. The tasting begins. In between Elio comes and shakes his hands. "I'm so glad to finally be able to step down, because I'm tired. I don't want to explain for the umpteen thousandth time why I make my wines different. It's all in books anyway, even in movies you can see it."
Somebody's asking a question. And as if someone had activated the light switch, Elio lights up and begins to tell passionately. Like when he took over the farm in 1976. Silvia leaves the room silently and comes back after a good three quarters of an hour. She's got good timing. She knows her father. Elio immediately notices that he is not a bit tired, but the tasting should go on, he says goodbye, not without smilingly explaining how proud he is of his daughters, and disappears to one of his new projects, a village in Alta Piemonte, which he renovates with friends. There will then be delicious cheese, organic fruit and vegetables - and perhaps a spumante from the almost extinct grape variety Liseiret, because saving his vineyard in Cinque Terre is as good as done. Old age tired looks different somehow.
Silvia continues the tasting and it quickly becomes clear that quality and style are unchanged, Barolo's big cinema in La Morra continues. Laughing, she makes it clear that since she can think, she has always helped, she has simply lived the perfection of her father and will continue to do so.
Elio Altare is one of the "Barolo Boys", a group of young winegrowers from the poorest backgrounds who, in the late 1960s and following decades, worked their way up, introduced modern cellar techniques, shorter fermentation times and ageing in French barriques and were therefore extremely successful. His goal has always been to make Barolo as elegant and long-lasting as the famous Burgundy wines from which he brought the ideas. That was clearly successful.
The small mixed farm Cascina Nuova of the grandfather in La Morra has become with hard work in the course of the decades the model enterprise of the modern Barolo winegrowers. In addition to the - in the truest sense of the word - local mountain, the top location Arborina, over the years some of the very best cru locations, such as Cannubi and Cerretta Vigna Bricco in the Barolo area, have been acquired by purchase or lease. So today there are 12 hectares of absolute top vineyards, which are cultivated by the family with respect by hand, all without the use of chemicals and pesticides. The cellar is fermented only with our own yeasts and as little sulphur as possible is used. In recent years, the range has been supplemented by the "Uno per Uno", a top barolo from the Arborina cru vineyard, where the family desteps the grapes by hand and selects only the very best grapes.
In addition to the Barolo specialities, which have always received the highest awards worldwide, the Dolcetto, Barbera and Nebbiolo are also long-running favourites in the top ranks of international ratings. The Barbera Larigi or the Nebbiolo-Barbera-Cuvée La Villa as well as the Nebbiolo Giarborina have as much success as the Barolo grenades. It is worth mentioning that Elio Altare and some of his winemaking colleagues have been sharing their success with the poor for many years because they have never forgotten how they themselves once felt. Thus the proceeds from the wine series "L'Insieme", which could be translated as "We Together", benefit charity projects. SUPERIORE.DE
