Barbera d’Alba Superiore DOC 2022
Fontanabianca has created an elegant and densely packed Barbera here. It shows the exuberance and potential of the grape with appropriate restraint. It is neither jammy nor overly fruity, but indulges with a fine dose of dried cherry, blackberry and plum flavours, plus some Spanish cedar wood with a fine citrus note. A well-balanced wine with a beautiful final. SUPERIORE.DE

“Classe 91” Metodo Classico VSQ brut
With less than two grams of residual sugar, this high-quality spumante, produced using the Champagne method, is a particularly dry representative of its kind. The Chardonnay grapes come from clay and limestone terroir about 450m above sea level in the small municipality of Neviglie. Fresh and floral on the nose with beautiful citrus and subtle yeast notes. Fine perlage, harmonious on the palate with a fine creaminess and a multilayered finish. SUPERIORE.DE

Barbaresco DOCG 2021
Light ruby red with orange reflections. Fine bouquet of violets, forest floor, cherries and a balsamic camphor note. Marasca cherry, some raspberry, liquorice and a hint of mint on the palate. An animating acidity and the right amount of powdery tannins round off the lively and long final. SUPERIORE.DE
"Dense, deep red berry flavours, dark cherries, firmly framed by grippy tannins, still slightly porous in texture, rather a head of character that still needs to round off a little." Weinwisser
"This is a bright and perfumed Barbaresco that shows potpourri, rosehips, dried strawberries and orange peel on the nose. It is medium-bodied, tangy and lively, with firm tannins and crisp acidity." James Suckling
"A lively mix of candied and fresh red fruits, bay leaf, and green herbs, with a whisper of cinchona bark and blooming rose. Dried cherry leads the palate in a tangy, mouthwatering dance with a playful herbal twist. Elegant tannins frame the entire palate as notes of crushed stone and earth finish the wine." Medium-bodied ruby red, fine rose bouquet with hints of tea and dried herbs. Beautiful black cherry aroma with well-integrated wood notes makes it a balanced and at no point intrusive wine. The 2016 climate also gave this Nebbiolo an impressive precision and straightness. SUPERIORE.DE
"Medium red; some fruit, tobacco; powerful, juicy, good tartness, very pleasant." Merum
"Developed-looking mid ruby with bricky rim. Brooding, complex, deep nose with a hint of Moroccan leather. Generous but not yet fully open fruit, stitched together by gorgeous chewy tannins and ripe acidity. Good medium-term potential." Jancis Robinson

Barbaresco Bordini DOCG 2020
Medium-deep ruby red with orange reflections. Wonderful bouquet of fine sour cherry and strawberry compote with restrained oak spice. Multi-layered and juicy on the palate with a potpourri of dark fruits, framed by fine-grained tannins. Well structured, it leads into an interesting, long finish. SUPERIORE.DE
"This red wine is fleshy and shows notes of cherries, strawberries, mint and earth, accompanied by a firm, lively structure. Although this wine sounds rather austere now, it is fresh and has a lingering fruity and spicy aftertaste." Wine Spectator
"This wine is lively and racy with ripe raspberries, blackcurrant leaves, rose petals and bergamot. Also dry earth. Medium to full body with crisp tannins and chalky texture. Structured and a little chewy, yet fresh and red-fruited with a mineral finish." James Suckling
"The Barbaresco Bordini 2020 (with fruit from the village of Neive) shows a medium-bodied density with more texture and structure in this vintage. The Bordini is a little more austere in character and savoury overall. This added richness is accompanied by an open approach that makes this wine approachable in the medium term. Or you can wait if you prefer." Wine Advocate
"Black raspberries, medicinal herbs and spiced tea dominate the aromatic profile. The firm palate reveals that the fruit is at the core, surrounded by sweet and savory spices, including notes of cigar box and worn leather. Mouthwatering acidity adds to its appeal." Wine Enthusiast

Barbaresco Serraboella DOCG 2020
Medium ruby red with orange-coloured reflections. Deep, concentrated bouquet with some lift and brooding intensity. Concentrated and long, but convincingly balanced by an integrated acidity and a rich layer of sandy tannins. Good potential, even if it can be enjoyed now. SUPERIORE.DE
"Very pale ruby in the glass, with mushroom earthiness, straw, strawberry, cinnamon and a meaty touch. This fierce character is supported by a very savoury attack, with delicate acid, polished and vibrant tannins: a large palate and a lot of details. There is great balance despite a bit of austerity on the finish. Super-classic for ageing." Decanter
"Fresh and crunchy with red fruit, dried herbs, potpourri and moist earth. Medium- to full-bodied with firm tannins, that are ripe and velvety. Dry and a little chewy at the end with attractive fruit coming through." James Suckling
"Packaged with a black label and eye-catching lettering in red, the Fontanabianca 2020 Barbaresco Serraboella reveals a very fine, almost dusty personality with wild berry, crushed rose and wet river stone. The wine is beautifully balanced, with dry tannins presented next to delicately sweet berry fruit. The Serraboella shows the careful winemaking practiced at this estate. Only 4,000 bottles were made." Wine Advocate
"Reserved yet somewhat haunting on the nose, this wine presents pristine dark-berried fruit aromas, dried rose and savory spices. Warmed and macerated black cherry shines on the palate, accompanied by mouthwatering acidity and a solid earthy bass note with firm, yet fine tannins. This wine is meant to be savored." "A luscious cherry and raspberry center gives this wine a generous, welcoming profile despite typically taut tannins. Great acidity balances the delicious red fruits that build on the palate and linger in the finish." James Suckling
"Simmering black cherry aromas dusted with a full spice cabinet lift from the glass in an almost ghostly manner. Dried rose petals along side sage, bay leaf, thyme and black tea develop as the wine opens. Just like a wave the wine stars off in the distance but swells to a crescendo of tart red fruits, savory spices, tobacco and dried earth. Elegant tannins hold the wine in place wanting to share the load with a savory dish of roasted meats and veggies." Wine Enthusiast

“Brunet” Barbera d’Alba Superiore DOC 2021 · MAGNUM in OWC
Only in the best years, the grapes from the one-hectare Barbera vineyard "Brunet", planted by Matteo's grandfather in the 1960s, are turned into their own Barbera d'Alba Superiore, and this is bottled in a few hundred magnum bottles after 2 years of ageing in large wood, and only released in small quantities on request. The 2018 edition is more restrained and elegant than the classic Barbera Superiore of the house. A brightness and freshness shines from the glass, which, together with the bouquet of wild cherry and blackberry, reveals a terrific independence and finesse. Then, in the drink, a depth and length flanked by well-proportioned acidity and mild tannins, which make the wine a great companion for juicy steaks or braised game dishes as it matures in the bottle. This is a Barbera Cru in a class of its own! SUPERIORE.DE

"Family business" one could call the typical Piedmontese winery of the Polas. Papa Aldo and son Matteo take care of the winemaking, so to speak the cellar, the second son Davide takes care of the vineyards and Mama Luisella takes care of the organisation and the bookkeeping.
It all began in 1969 when grandfather Franco Pola and his friend Ottavio Ferro founded a small winery in Bordini. A tiny village near Neive in Piedmont, where one family ran a Salumeria and the other family sold it in their Alimentari.
The sons Aldo Pola and Bruno Ferro made such fine wines in the second generation that Fontanabianca quickly became a secret tip among wine lovers. This was mainly due to the fact that the two recognized the potential that was to be found in their Barbaresco top locations. "Bordini" and "serraboella" and worked out the elegance of this calcareous terroir. While Bordini is almost entirely south oriented and therefore produces slightly denser, fuller wines, Serraboella is exposed to the southwest and a little cooler.
Matteo Pola joined the company in 2016 after studying wine and a few years in a wine laboratory, when the Ferro family retired for reasons of age. Matteo loves the elegance and harmony between fruit, tannins and acidity in the wine and has therefore carefully changed the style: "In the late 1990s and 2000s, complexity was important, as ripeness meant harvesting as late as possible to reach high sugar levels. I prefer to harvest three or four days earlier, looking for the optimal degree of ripeness to achieve more elegance and freshness. I don't want aromas of overripe grapes in my wines."
The 2018 harvest also saw the completion of the new cellar, which over three floors, two of which are directly under the vineyard, enables gentler treatment without pumps. Matteo now also has more room for even more accurate selection, including large and small wooden barrels, when taking over the grapes, in order to be able to optimally develop the various batches. Arneis, Dolcetto, Barbera and Nebbiolo are cultivated. Four wines are made from Nebbiolo, one Langhe Nebbiolo, one "normal Barbaresco" - a selection of different sites, classically matured in large wooden barrels - and the two single sites (Cru): Barbaresco Serraboella, from approx. 15-20 year old vines, fermented in steel tanks and traditionally matured in large barrels for 15 months, as well as the "flagship" Barbaresco Bordini, from vines over 30 years old, allowed to mature for 15 months in small barrels (tonneaux and barriques).
And because his grandfather loved to drink sparkling wines so much, he was pleased to have produced a "blanc de blancs" Spumante Metodo Classico in classic bottle fermentation from Chardonnay, with almost zero residual sugar or dosage, which is now quite in demand. The vineyards are cultivated close to nature and for several years neither fertilizers nor chemical sprays have been used. SUPERIORE.DE
