Powerful wines with a velvety structure and elegance are the hallmark of the Piedmontese family business Giovanni Rosso. Located in the well-known municipality of Serralunga d'Alba, the Rosso family has been cultivating its vineyards since the 1890s.
Until the estate's namesake, Giovanni Rosso, decided to press his own wines in 1995, the estate had been exclusively dedicated to selling grapes for a century. Today's success story really got rolling when Giovanni's son Davide joined the company as head Oenologist in 2011. The then 21-year-old had previously studied in Burgundy and worked there at prestigious wineries such as Domaine Jean Grivot and Domaine Denis Mortet. There he learnt above all how to produce quality wines that express the historical winegrowing tradition and the unique growing region in the glass.
In his own winery, Davide has defined his current guiding principle over the years: "Every wine must be the perfect copy of its terroir." It is not without reason that the Rosso family has owned some of the most sought-after vineyards in the Langhe for many years, such as Serra, Broglio, Damiano, Cerretta, Lirano, Meriame, Costa Bella and Sorano. Davide also cultivates a parcel of 80-year-old vines in the unique Vignarionda vineyard, whose Barolo wines have earned Giovanni Rosso international recognition.
The Nebbiolo, Barbera and Arneis grapes are cultivated in an environmentally friendly way and without any chemicals. Davide attaches great importance to a low yield and never harvests more than he could in favour of quality. After the manual harvest, the grapes are fermented in the wine cellar and then matured for several months in 50-hectolitre French oak barrels according to traditional guidelines.
In addition to Piedmontese classics such as Barbera d'Alba, Nebbiolo Langhe and an aromatic Roero Arneis, the winery also produces an award-winning selection of dense and impressively complex Barolo wines for the passionate wine geeks among us. Davide is now also proving his talent as a winemaker in southern Italy. In Sicily, he has been producing wonderfully exciting volcanic wines under the same name in the province of Catania since 2016.
The name Giovanni Rosso is therefore a real promise of quality. And if you want to find the Piedmont region in your wine glass, this range is undoubtedly the right place for you. SUPERIORE.DE
