Barolo Pira Vecchie Viti comes from the estate's oldest vines, which were planted in 1937. As always, Pira Vecchie Viti is more about haunting, ethereal flavours than power. Sweet rose petals, mint, dried flowers, sweet red cherries and cedar give this beguiling, high-toned Barolo a captivating aromatic presence. A great wine. SUPERIORE.DE
"Transparent ruby red colour. The nose is reminiscent of a morning stroll through an oriental bazaar. The ethereal opening combines noble woods such as cedar and sandalwood until you enter the spice area and juniper mingles with black pepper and cardamom as well as dark tobacco. The fruit vendors cheerfully offer cherries, raspberry jelly and preserved hibiscus flowers, while the florists have small violets on display. One of the market vendors refreshes his bicycle chain with a bit of graphite and chews on a piece of liquorice with a smile. The ripe, leafy tannins of the Barolo Pira Vecchie Viti are densely interwoven with extract-sweet fruit notes and the all-defining acidity. No component stands alone, but always works in a conglomerate with its fellow players. The wine is a strongly structured experience, powerful with a slender stature, comparable to Bruce Lee. Extract, tannins and vertical acidity are powerful on the palate with a multi-layered, epic final. Large glasses and great cuisine are highly recommended here." "This is an incredible expression of Nebbiolo, fluid and luminous. It is constantly changing with delicate swirls. But you can also feel the power and intensity of a concentrated vintage. The bouquet opens with a hint of something botanical, with flowers and fresh mint that give the wine an enormous vertical lift. Luca Roagna tells me that wild mint actually grows everywhere in the vineyard, and when he drives his tractor through the rows, it reminds him of an exotic mojito cocktail." Wine Advocate
"Aromas of cardamom and white pepper are an ideal foil for this red's strawberry, cherry, floral, mineral and eucalyptus flavors. Though linear in profile, this builds in intensity to the long, kaleidoscopic aftertaste. Still a touch austere yet almost creamy in texture, this needs another three to five years to open up." "The Barolo Pira Vecchie Viti 2019 is one of the most captivating and beautiful wines I have ever tasted here. Interestingly, it is more open than the pure Pira because it is perfumed and sweeter on the inside. Candy sugar, rose petals, mint, orange peel and kirsch rush across the palate. The 2019 is simply stunning. There's not much more to say." Vinous
