“Terra” Barbera 2021
Lively bright ruby red. Initially slightly reductive on the nose, Terra soon reveals its great spicy profile of small red forest fruits, medicinal herbs and nutty notes. On the palate with medium pressure, a very pleasant dynamic and great drinking flow. The lively and refreshing acidity, together with its likeable red fruitiness, make it an excellent food companion. An exceptional Barbera that will still be fun to drink many years from now. SUPERIORE.DE

“Sentieri” Barbera Marca Obertenga 2022
The Barbera vines for Sentieri are over 30 years old and grow at an altitude of around 300 metres on predominantly calcareous soils in the natural amphitheatre of Monleale. It is the complete opposite of an opulent, dense style. Sentieri has a wonderful Italian freshness and is 100% focussed on the primary fruit of the Barbera grape. It presents plenty of race and a personality that is elegantly restrained and very balanced. For us, this is Barbera in its purest form and here Walter Massa impressively proves that he is not only capable of top performance with the white Timorasso. And once again we are more than impressed by the excellent value of his wines. SUPERIORE.DE

“Piccolo Derthona” Timorasso 2023
Pale straw yellow with golden reflections. Aromatic bouquet of tangerine, lemon and orange zest, with a hint of herbs. Very vertical, direct, crystal clear and fresh on the palate, with beautiful minerality and good length. Excellent with medium-aged cheese and savoury seafood dishes. The "entry-level wine" from Timorasso mastermind Walter Massa impressively confirms the level at which the entire collection operates. SUPERIORE.DEread more- Grape Variety: 100% Timorasso

“L’Avvelenata” Freisa Marca Obertenga 2019 vivace
What would Piedmont be without its slightly effervescent red Freisa? Normally, the Piedmontese tend to enjoy these immensely drinkable wines themselves, so that hardly any relevant quantity remains for export. The nose has an animating scent of rose petals, cinnamon and cherry, which are also found in the drink. L'Avvenata is a rather slender red, distantly reminiscent of a Nebbiolo. Its softer tannins and greater fruitiness make it a joyful companion for all occasions, even when slightly chilled. SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2019 L'Avvelenata is bright and beautifully perfumed, the 2019 is a fresh, vibrant red to drink now and over the next handful of years. The purity of the red berry fruit is compelling. Attractive floral and spice notes lend freshness throughout." Vinous

“Monleale” Barbera Colli Tortonesi DOC 2017
Monleale is a rich, intoxicating wine. Medium ruby-garnet in colour, the bouquet has a subtle sweetness, dried cherry, balsamic notes and clove. On the palate, spicy and earthy undertones support its precise core of dense red cherry and plum fruit, while it briskly presents a powerful and pleasantly savoury style that is ideal for the dining table. Monleale has plenty of personality and character, and its persistence and longevity make it one of the most profound and intense Barbera wines to be found in this price range. SUPERIORE.DE

Derthona Timorasso 2022
The best plots around Monleale, from which the grapes for the Derthona Timorasso come, cover just 11 hectares. They are located in the Apennine and pre-Apennine hills of the Marca Obertenga, the soils contain mainly marl and clayey layers.
The deep bouquet has green and yellow fruit notes, orange confit, graphite, mint and a hint of camomile. On the palate, it marches straight ahead with that certain exotic something, its pleasantly fresh acidity and fine tannins into a long finish with an attractive citrus peel bitterness reminiscent of Chinotto and a mineral vein. The 12-month contact during fermentation in stainless steel on the lees ensures that it gains in depth and complexity with each year of further bottle ageing. SUPERIORE.DE
"This wine is from the estate that brought Timorasso back from the brink of extinction. Walter Massa continues to craft wines that captivate and energize the soul. This wine opens with pure sunshine, with vibrant apple and yellow-peach aromas dancing alongside wildflowers and hints of fresh herbs. Brace yourself for a tantalizing texture and layers of juicy fruits on a foundation of stone and salt. It's a modern masterpiece that will leave you craving more." Wine Enthusiast

“Costa del Vento” Derthona Timorasso 2020
Walter Massa's single-vineyard Timorasso Costa del Vento is made by a cold maceration of about 40 hours, a subsequent fermentation of about 12 months in stainless steel tanks under regular batonnage of the yeast for about 12 months. It is stronger and richer than the basic Timorasso and therefore needs more attention and further bottle ageing.
Impressive, almost lush bouquet of green and yellow stone fruit, plus notes of roasted nuts, honey and peach puree. Very powerful and multi-layered on the palate, almost viscous, but always precisely defined and without any sweetness. The fascination of this great white wine will only fully reveal itself in a few years, but its power and simultaneous balance already make it one of the most amazing and leading Timorasso monuments of the Colli Tortonesi. “Montecitorio” Derthona Timorasso 2018
Walter Massa's single vineyard Timorasso Montecitorio is created through a cold maceration of about 40 hours, a subsequent fermentation of about 12 months in stainless steel tanks under regular batonnage of the yeast for about 12 months.
Timorasso Montecitorio smells of orange confit, petrol, wild flowers and honey. Rich and complex in the glass, it takes on Riesling-like nuances of minerality. After some aeration (or better: further bottle ageing), it reveals countless layers of aromas and a depth that, together with its overall exotic feel and salty notes, make Montecitorio distinctive and great! “Sterpi” Derthona Timorasso 2022
The indigenous white grape variety Timorasso led a shadowy existence for many years, but today some winegrowers are already calling it the "white Barolo". This is partly due to its great complexity and finesse, and partly due to the excellent ageing potential of the wines.
Walter Massa's single-vineyard Timorasso Sterpi is the result of a cold maceration of approx. 40 hours, followed by a fermentation of approx. 12 months in stainless steel tanks with regular batonnage of the yeast for approx. 12 months. Sterpi is a powerful, dense and richly structured wine. Orange confit, honey, green apple and mint are some of the many notes that unfold in the glass. This big, striking white has the texture, weight and glycerine to last a long time. SUPERIORE.DE

Walter Massa could have claimed the success for the rediscovery of Timorasso for himself. Instead, the Piedmontese winemaker decided to share his experience and motivated his competitors to plant their vineyards with this forgotten grape variety. To make it clear what the Timorasso is really capable of, he even offered his support during the entire production process in the first years
However, the fact that only a few people were familiar with this grape variety is due to the fact that after the Second World War, the Tortonese hills were mainly planted with high-yielding Barbera vines. After taking over his father's business, however, Massa had had enough of selling only red cask wine. He set his mind on doing something special and in 1987, unsuspectingly, vinified the grapes of his 400 remaining Timorasso vines into single-varietal white wines
The wine character of the Timorasso now holds so much surprise potential that the wine world would be missing something important if no one had dared this experiment and the grape variety had simply been forgotten. Walter Massa, however, has always been intelligent enough to highlight the aromatic profile of Timorasso and to share this discovery with the winemakers of the Colli Tortonesi DOC, which incidentally makes his wines the pioneers of the still young appellation
His small winery is located in the village of Monleale in the province of Alessandria, an hour's drive from Genoa, Milan and Turin. Here, the eloquent winemaker produces a very respectable basic Timorasso and three sensational single-vineyard wines. "I make Derthona, Costa del Vento, Montecitorio and Sterpi all in the same way: the grapes usually macerate on the skins for two days and fermentation is followed by a year of ripening on the noble yeasts," Massa explains in conversation, emphasising that the different taste profiles of the wines are thus mainly determined by the terroir of the very limestone vineyards
Massa, who is in his mid-fifties, cultivates over eight hectares of Timorasso vines, half a hectare of Moscato and is also an outstanding expert when it comes to red wine. For his Monleale Barbera, Massa prefers old barriques, while he uses new barriques for the Bigolla Barbera. Freisa and Croatina, on the other hand, mature in large wooden barrels, but apart from that, the production of his long-lived red wines also proceeds in a very similar way
Walter Massa is skilful, quick-witted and generous and, given his experience, the "father of Timorasso" could also be described as a wandering, oenological encyclopaedia. Slowly but surely, he has succeeded in doing exactly what he had in mind during his early days: working with his fellow winemakers to shape the standard of Piedmont's white wine landscape and bring the grandiose Timorasso back into the spotlight.
