Etna Rosso DOC 2022
Sparkling ruby red colour, intense and appealing mineral aroma of plums, orange zest, ripe raspberries and a hint of liquorice in the background. Elegant tannins and a delicious fruity flavour on the juicy palate. SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2022 Etna Rosso smells of pink flowers and a hint of juniper berries. It is vividly fruit-driven, with a wave of ripe wild berries and sweet spices flowing over a stream of vibrant acidity. It leaves a hint of primary concentration and slightly grippy tannins that linger as the purple flowers inside slowly fade. Although more extroverted than expected, the 2022 is an absolute pleasure and has fantastic balance." Vinous

Etna Bianco DOC 2023
Benantis Etna Bianco from 100% Carricante is a delicately perfumed expression of Carricante with gentle mineral notes, white flowers and light flavours of peach or nectarine. The true protagonist, however, are the carefully dosed volcanic tones of ash and smoke. The bouquet will become even more refined with a year or more of ageing in the bottle. Fresh and round on the palate, great acidity and a saline vein, with a subtle sweetness on the finish. SUPERIORE.DE
"This lean, minerally white is well cut and refreshing, with flavours of plump white cherry, lemon oil, spun honey and chamomile spreading across the palate, underscored by lingering notes of mineral smoke and salt on the savoury finish." Wine Spectator
"Expressive and robust, showing powerful elegance and great textural appeal, this is a Carricante that balances classicism and modernity. Green apple, quince, and white grapefruit at the core with an elegant top layer of lemon balm, white roses and linden. Very long on the palate with focus and a delicious chalky grip that makes it linger on the palate. Lingering notes of grapefruit pith, preserved lemon and pear peel." Decanter

Nerello Cappuccio Terre Siciliane IGT 2021
Nerello Cappuccio with dried flowers, cherries and spices on the nose offers elegant pleasure. Medium-bodied, delicate and ethereal on the finish. A fascinating interpretation of the indigenous Etna grape variety. SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2021 Nerello Cappuccio is dark and brooding in the glass. Hints of sage and balsamic spice complicate dried black cherries on the nose. It’s much more giving on the palate, pleasantly ripe in style with a wave of tart wild berry fruits and saline minerals that saturate, adding tension toward the close. The 2021 tapers off with a staining of primary concentration, gently grippy tannins and a bitter tinge of tart blackberry that lingers on and on." Vinous
"Flavours of watermelon, slightly tart cherries and crushed stones follow through to a medium body, with bright acidity and a creamy and round tannin structure. Delicious now, but even better in a few years." James Suckling

“Lamoremio” Metodo Classico Rosé Etna DOC 2020 brut
Sparkling wine matured on the lees in bottle fermentation from 100% Nerello grapes from high altitudes on the southern slopes of Mount Etna. The vines are between 10 and 20 years old and are trained using the cordon system with spur pruning. They grow on sandy, volcanic, mineral-rich soils.
Fine salmon pink with ruby red reflections. Restrained, fine perlage, intense and delicate bouquet of red fruit. Firm and dry on the palate, medium-bodied and supported by a well-proportioned acidity structure, with a subtle tannic tang on the finish. Vibrantly fresh and highly distinctive! SUPERIORE.DE
"The nose is a savory blend of warm bricks and hibiscus tea, with an undertone of blood orange zest providing pop. The hibiscus continues onto the tart, tangy palate, while astringent notes of cranberry and more pink citrus play off the persistent perlage." Wine Enthusiast
"The 2020 Brut Metodo Classico Rosato Lamorèmio bursts from the glass with a smoky, savory bouquet that mixes dried cherries with hints of shaved cedar and worn leather. This flows across the palate with an opulent wave of creamy textural bubbles that gives way to pretty cherry-berry fruits and sweet spice. It finishes remarkably fresh, leaving rosy inner florals and hints of wild blueberry." Vinous

“Contrada Cavaliere” Rosso Etna DOC 2020
This elegant and very harmonious red comes 100% from the small vineyard (Contrada) Cavaliere on the south-western slope of Etna. The vineyards in the municipality of Santa Maria di Licodìa develop at considerable altitudes (about 900 m above sea level) with favourable conditions for all indigenous varieties, both red and white berries, which are grown here with Guyot pruning. Here, both the Nerello and the Carricante varieties produce wines with a well-defined structure and varietal aromas.
Radiant ruby red. Ethereal bouquet full of spice and hints of red fruits. On the palate, medium-bodied, multilayered and with a fine tannin and acid wire that complete its elegance and harmony. SUPERIORE.DE
"A lovely nose of crushed red cherries, fresh roses and crushed herbs. Medium-bodied with firm yet elegant tannins. Well balanced, with a pleasantly nuanced and subtle approach. Sour cherry and green strawberry. Still a bit tight. Best after 2025." James Suckling

“Noblesse” Metodo Classico Terre Siciliane IGT 2021 brut
Noblesse is the very first and still extremely rare bottle-fermented sparkling wine made from Carricante, the noble indigenous white grape of the Etna volcano. The grapes come from 20-60 year old vines that are planted both in the traditional bush vine (albarello) and in rows using the Guyot training system. Pale straw yellow in colour with light greenish reflections. Very delicate and persistent perlage, fine foam. Intense on the nose, with a delicate aroma of orange and lemon blossom and ripe apple. Wonderfully fresh and dry on the palate, elegant, with pleasant acidity and a lovely aromatic, delicately yeasty finish. SUPERIORE.DE

The Nerello grapes (100% Mascalese) come from the northern slope of Etna from plots in the Contrada Dafara Galluzzo in the Rovittello district. Opens in a delicate ruby red colour, then fine, heady, spicy on the nose, revealing a pretty basket of red fruits after a few minutes of aeration. Initially closed on the palate, only gradually revealing its flavour facets, then medium pressure in the middle, with a very fine structure and almost Burgundian finesse and elegance. The finish is harmonious and of excellent length. SUPERIORE.DE
"Quite light red; shrubby-fruity, appealing; subtle jammy fruit, sweetness, quite tart, not dry tannin." Merum
"Here is a submission from Benanti, which comes from a rather unknown contrada. The 2021 Etna Rosso Contrada Dafara Galluzzo is located in Castiglione di Sicilia on the north side of the volcano. The wine shows a medium-light appearance with spicy volcanic notes of ash and bonfire, surrounded by delicate fruit, sour cherry and cassis. The wine has fine tannins with dusty impressions resulting from the volcanic environment. This gives the wine an approachable personality." Wine Advocate
"Aromatic and bright with notes of orange peel and watermelon, but also some cherry. Medium-bodied, with firm and medium-soft tannins that are long and flattering." James Suckling
"The 2021 Etna Rosso Contrada Dafara Galluzzo is exotic and floral, with hints of ash stone and dusty rose that fade into dried black cherries. Silky and smooth, it flows across the palate with a pure blend of red and blue fruits, fuelled by juicy acidity. The final is structured and long, yet perfumed, allowing violet and lavender tones to fade away on a bed of fine-grained tannins. The Dafara Galluzzo is a real charmer for which further ageing is recommended." Vinous
"The bouquet is restrainedly sweet, with dried cherries and fresh and preserved oranges supported by vanilla and baking spice notes, while herbs and earth provide a savoury balance. The blend of cherries, oranges and baking spices continues on the palate, like a warm pastry, before a tart, salty and peppery finish." Wine Enthusiast
"Nose of wild flowers and red cherries. Dense, silky-textured palate. Plenty of tannins but fine, adding a chalky grip to the finish." Decanter

Brilliant ruby red colour. Ethereal bouquet full of spice and hints of red fruit. Medium-bodied on the palate, multi-layered and with a fine acid wire tannins and acid wire that complete its elegance and harmony. SUPERIORE.DE
"Firm, somewhat Mediterranean-herbal aroma of black and red berries with cherry nuances, hints of leather, dried mushrooms and peppery, ethereal spice. Ripe, taut, very juicy, rather dark fruit with cocoa and coffee notes, crumbly-sandy, ripe tannin, some bite, persistent and dense on the palate, again dark ethereal spice, has power and some warmth, but also a certain elegance, good depth, salty mineral tones, very good, firm, juicy and spicy finish." Wein-Plus
"Initially sober and earthy, with dark fruits and fine tannins, it opens up with a little air to reveal intense, powerful black cherries, herbs, balsam and spices, balanced by good acidity. This wine definitely needs time to reveal its secrets." Decanter
"A well-spiced red, with minerally hints of iron and tar underscoring macerated cherry and strawberry fruit. Bright and tightly meshed, with a dense core of tannins emerging to firm the fragrant, herb-laced finish." Wine Spectator
"Fresh flowers with oranges, black cherries and blackberries. Very clear flavours. Subtle and complex. Full-bodied but not heavy with firm and structured tannins. Powerful and muscular, but still very agile. It still needs three or four years to develop, but is already impressive." James Suckling
"The nose is a beach flora, wild fruits and herbs grow between the cracks of the salt-encrusted rocks. The palate leans into the metallic, savoury notes, but cherries, fizzy acidity and a latent warmth provide balance." Wine Enthusiast
"The Benanti 2021 Etna Rosso Contrada Cavaliere is powerful and bright with lots of primary fruit reminiscent of raspberry and redcurrant with a hint of white pepper. This vintage delivers a very clean and immediate quality of fruit that is crisp, snappy and even crunchy in texture. The winemaking style is focused and very precise. It will be interesting to see where this wine develops in three to four years' time. The way it tastes today, it definitely needs more time in the bottle." Wine Advocate

“Contrada Monte Serra” Rosso Etna DOC 2021
Benanti's new red comes 100% from the Monte Serra vineyard (Contrada) and from 13-100 year old Nerello Mascalese vines. The maximum production per year is just 6,000 bottles. It delights with its lively flavour and silky texture with beautiful cassis notes, enormous energy and terrificminerality and ends with a wonderfully long finish. SUPERIORE.DE
"The wine comes from the historic vineyard around the very attractive winery. It is very complex with graphite nuances, ripe red berries, raspberry pulp, redcurrants and delicate floral notes. It is strikingly reminiscent of a Barolo with its earthy and dense character." Weinwisser
"Clear, more red than black berry nose with nutty aromas, some dried flowers, a hint of tobacco, hints of tar and tomato essence. Ripe, tart, juicy, firm, yet transparent fruit, restrained nutty flavours, some cocoa and pepper, herbal nuances, a certain acid bite and ripe, fine, quite present tannins, persistent on the palate, lots of salt, tobacco and smoky nuances, very good, firm finish." Wein-Plus
"A slightly chewy, medium-bodied red wine with notes of sun-dried cherries, rich loamy earth, grilled herbs and mocha finely interwoven with silky tannins. There are hints of tar and spice accents on the finish." Wine Spectator
"The Etna Rosso Contrada Monte Serra 2021 is dusty, floral and yet delicate. It smells of red fruits and spices with hints of rose. It flows easily over the palate, soft and round, gaining traction through a core of mineral, tart cherry and strawberry flavours. A crisp cranberry lingers along with edgy tannins and a hint of residual acidity that provides a lovely freshness. This is a beautiful interpretation of Monte Serra." Vinous
"The Benanti 2021 Etna Rosso Contrada Monte Serra (with fruit from the Viagrande side of the volcano) shows a floral and slightly more fragrant side of Nerello Mascalese. It is packed with red berries and small background details reminiscent of volcanic rock, mountain herbs and dried lavender. On the palate, the wine is straightforward and linear with very fine and dusty tannins." Wine Advocate
"Fine garnet red colour. Animating, elegant aroma of cherry and redcurrant, fresh herbs, spicy aftertaste. Strong structure on the palate, noticeable acidity and present tannins, powerful, fruity final." Falstaff
"Aromas of strawberries and cherries emerge first on the nose, but savoury notes of herbs, spices, earth and stone soon follow. The savoury elements unfold on the palate, which is built on a foundation of salty, fleshy flavours, but a citrus tone underlines the fruit of the nose, while the acidity escalates on the finish." Wine Enthusiast
"It has a nice acidity, with chocolaty red fruits in the mouth, accompanied by lots of spice, leading to a long woody, balsamic finish." Decanter
"Aromas of fresh plums, peaches and nectarines with some lemon blossom. Some caramel. Full-bodied yet unobtrusive with wonderfully finely structured tannins that spread openly across the palate. Oranges at the end with some candied lemons." James Suckling

“Contrada Calderana Sottana” Rosso Etna DOC 2021
Deep red colour. Captivating aromas of sweet cherry, crushed rock and violet. Juicy, supple and perfumed, it shows excellent vinosity in the complex, very precise flavours of plums, sour cherries and dried herbs. Fine-grained tannins and a beautiful, persistent aromatic flavour characterise the long, very pure finish. Firm tannins form the backbone of this finely modelled, chiselled Nerello Mascalese and spicy notes frame the bright, powerful finish. SUPERIORE.DE
"Deep bouquet with ripe, delicately gelled wild berries, wild cherries and redcurrants, with a hint of floral notes. There are also earthy and floral notes reminiscent of rose bush. A wonderful, elegant, concentrated wine with a clear character of origin." Weinwisser
"Aromas of cherries, oranges and flowers with a hint of smoke. Medium to full-bodied with plush, open and velvety tannins that caress the palate. It is juicy and full of flavour. Tantalising to taste even as a young wine, but it will be even better in two or three years." James Suckling
"From the most recent acquisition of the winery in the municipality of Castiglione, on the northern slope of Mount Etna, a Nerello Mascalese of great freshness and verticality. Notes of cranberry on the nose, hints of laurel, then Mediterranean scrub and nutmeg, salty and savoury on the palate, with a fruity and oily finish." Luca Gardini

"The 2022 Etna Rosso Contrada Dafara Galluzzo has a dark and deep red colour, with an inviting bouquet of dried roses, ash, redcurrants and orange zest. It is silky smooth, elegant and refined, with a soothing wave of ripe red and blue fruits energised by a core of zesty acidity. It leaves a crisp, tart cranberry concentration that finishes with a layer of fine-grained tannins. The Dafara Galluzzo has an underlying power and complexity that will only unfold with time." Vinous
"A well-made Etna, very fresh and lively with orange peel and strawberry flavours. Medium-bodied, with fine, vertical tannins and a slightly chewy finish. Beautifully structured." James Suckling
"The wine opens with delicate strawberry and floral aromas, evolving into more spicy notes with hints of clove. The strawberries are carried through on the palate and play wonderfully with the more resinous, earthy notes that appear over time. A touch of iron adds intrigue. With good acidity and slightly chewy tannins, this wine has the structure to age beautifully." Decanter

“Contrada Cavaliere” Bianco Etna DOC 2022
Benanti's latest white wine comes 100% from the small vineyard (Contrada) Cavaliere. The vineyards in the municipality of Santa Maria di Licodìa develop at a considerable altitude (approx. 900 metres above sea level) with favourable conditions for all indigenous varieties, both red and white berries, which are cultivated here with Guyot pruning. Here, both the Nerello and the Carricante produce wines with a well-defined structure and typical varietal flavours. The vines are around 50 years old and grow on sandy, volcanic soil that is rich in minerals. The climate is alpine, with little rainfall and provides the vines with a high degree of ventilation and very large temperature differences between day and night.
Straw yellow in colour with bright green reflections. The bouquet is intense, rich, generous and delicately fruity with hints of orange blossom and ripe apple. The palate is dry, mineral, harmonious with a pleasant acidity, aromatic pressure and an interesting aftertaste of aniseed and almonds. SUPERIORE.DE"A little more mellow and riper than the Etna Bianco with its yellow-fruity character. In the mouth with a melting character that is beautifully balanced and wonderfully cushioned by the saline acidity, which also gives the wine freshness and piquancy." Weinwisser
"Intense and vertical, it's full of fresh citrus and herbs, with some leesy creaminess and a finish of lemon posset and pear. Delicious." Decanter
"This bright, open-knit white crackles with acidity and shows savoury notes of white pepper and grapefruit peel, as well as hints of peach skin, smoke, preserved lemon and lentils. Salty finish." Wine Spectator
"The 2022 Etna Bianco Contrada Cavaliere is youthfully shy with a delicately perfumed blend of wild flowers, white smoke and green apples with gingery notes. The wine is pure, elegant and refined, with a salty minerality on the attack and crunchy fruit that gives an equally crisp feel towards the finish. The 2022 finishes colourful and long with youthful tension, a hint of salinity and a feeling of liquid stone." Vinous
"This wine has the richness of the 2021 vintage, but is not heavy or ponderous. It shows intensity of flavour with cake crust, light caramel and dried fruit. Full-bodied, with a phenolic tension and acidity that give it its shape. Drink it now." James Suckling

“Contrada Rinazzo” Bianco Etna Superiore DOC 2022
The area around the small town of Milo is the only vineyard site on Etna where an Etna Bianco is allowed to be bottled as Superiore - and for good reason: only Carricante may be planted on the steep vineyard, which consists of dozens of small terraces. The vines are trained like a small tree on poles made of chestnut wood. The eastern exposure and the proximity of the sea allow the grapes to ripen late, resulting in very consistent acidity levels and a white wine with an aromatic finesse and freshness that is unrivalled even on Etna. SUPERIORE.DE
"Medium, sparkling straw yellow colour. Nose of pineapple and mango, some banana, underlaid with jasmine blossom, flint on the finish. Delicate fruit melt on the palate with fine acidity, the fruit is noticeable, citrus flavours on the finish, animating." Falstaff
"A structured white with razor-sharp acidity that combines with flavours of crisp white peach, green almond, crushed pine, lemon wax and petrol. Good tension and focus; it should open up well with short cellaring." Wine Spectator
"A burst of flint and smoke gives way to minty herbs and crushed green apples as the 2022 Etna Bianco Superiore Contrada Rinazzo blossoms in the glass. It washes over the palate with a texture of pure silk, while salty minerals and citrusy fruit trees saturate the palate. The 2022 keeps the energy remarkably high, fuelled by zesty acidity, while notes of sour grapefruit ripple the tongue during the long and youthfully tense final. The Rinazzo is already enjoyable today, but it also has a balance that will be worth cellaring. Wonderfully made." Vinous

“Rovittello” Rosso Riserva Etna DOC 2016
After almost thirty years of experience in the vinification of the famous Etna Rosso "Rovittello", the Benanti family decided in 2015 to extend the vinification, ageing and refinement of the wine to 60 months. The result is an exclusive Riserva, produced in small growthfrom vines more than 100 years old in plot no. 341, which is rightly considered one of the best reds in the region. The Nerello grapes (85% Mascalese/15% Cappuccio) come from a terraced vineyard (pre-phylloxera) in the Contrada Dafara Galluzzo in the upper area of Rovittello, part of the municipality of Castiglione di Sicilia.
Pale ruby with light garnet tones. Fine, ethereal, floral, intense, spicy, delicate bouquet with hints of ripe fruit, young tanned leather and cedar. Firm, powerful on the palate, opening up only gradually and then revealing bit by bit its depth and secrets, marked by impressive weightlessness and elegance. An extremely harmonious red with meditation potential - mineral and of remarkable persistence! SUPERIORE.DE
"Ruby red with garnet reflections. Nose with notes of small red fruits, currants, cherries, nectarines and slightly wilted red flowers, mineral final. Mineral and taut on the palate, leaving a pleasant fruity trail. Pleasant to drink." Falstaff
"Aromas of redcurrants, berries, soy, spice and ash follow through to a full body with round and polished tannins that are beautifully crafted and poised. Very fine-grained, silky texture. Persistent and beautiful." James Suckling

“Noblesse” Metodo Classico Terre Siciliane IGT 2021 brut · MAGNUM

After almost twenty years of experience in the vinification of the famous Etna Rosso "Serra della Contessa", the Benanti family decided in 2015 to extend the vinification, ageing and refinement of the wine to 60 months. The result is an exclusive Riserva made from 85% Mascalese and 15% Cappuccio, produced in small quantities from vines over 100 years old (pre-phylloxera) from plot no. 587, which is rightly considered one of the best red wines in the region.
Bright ruby red with light garnet-coloured reflections. Ethereal and intense on the nose, with hints of wild berries, spices, precious wood and traces of white smoke. Full, elegant, harmonious and mineral on the palate, with terrificelegance and length. SUPERIORE.DE
"The nose effortlessly blends savory aromas of soil, clean wood and salt with the semisweet astringency of hibiscus, rose petals and wild strawberries. On the palate, raspberries briefly bolster the strawberry, before a powerful earthiness takes over. Acid brings a glint of spice as it sparks off polished, smooth tannins." Decanter
"Crushed stones, rose petals and dried strawberries form a dusty and dark, seductive bouquet when the 2017 Etna Rosso Riserva Serra della Contessa rises from the glass. It is silky-soft and elegant in style. Polished red fruits and mineral tones provide traction under a hint of violet flowers on the inside. A hint of sour citrus fruit combined with a touch of residual acidity provides balance, even if the grippy tannins persist on the long and structured final. Today, the 2017 is primary, but its potential is very great." Vinous
"What fantastic aromas of dried flowers, cloves, smoke and cherries. The wine is medium-bodied with creamy and round tannins that are polished and beautiful. Intensely flavoured. Drinkable now, but it will age beautifully." James Suckling

“Rovittello” Rosso Riserva Etna DOC 2017
After almost thirty years of experience in the vinification of the famous Etna Rosso "Rovittello", the Benanti family decided in 2015 to extend the vinification, ageing and refinement of the wine to 60 months. The result is an exclusive Riserva, produced in small quantities from vines over 100 years old from plot no. 341, which is rightly considered one of the best red wines in the region. The Nerello grapes (85% Mascalese/15% Cappuccio) come from a terraced vineyard (pre-phylloxera) in the Contrada Dafara Galluzzo in the upper area of Rovittello, part of the municipality of Castiglione di Sicilia.
Pale ruby colour with light garnet tones. Fine, ethereal, floral, intense, spicy, delicate bouquet with hints of ripe fruit, young, tanned leather and cedar wood. Firm and powerful on the palate, it only opens up gradually and then gradually reveals its depth and secrets, which are characterised by impressive weightlessness and elegance. An extremely harmonious red with meditation potential - mineral and remarkably persistent! SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2017 Etna Rosso Riserva Rovittello blossoms in the glass with a remarkably pretty mix of roses, lilacs and violets before giving way to dried strawberries and sweet smoke. This wine is surprisingly round and juicy, driven by lively acidity, with crisp red fruits and blueberries spilling over the austere mineral core. Hints of sour citrus combine with lavender and tart blackberries as the 2017 finishes lightly textured and refined. Even though this version of the Rovittello Riserva is slightly younger than previous vintages, it is a truly beautiful wine with the balance for a long and steady evolution." Vinous
"The nose balances tart cherries and cranberries with savory undertones of pencil lead, herbs and medicinal licorice, before the palate leans into sweeter fruit, without losing that medicinal quality. Contoured tannins and lively acid accentuate a latent, earthy smokiness." Wine Enthusiast
"Wonderfully perfumed with fresh flowers such as hibiscus as well as cherry and watermelon character. Also gravel. Medium body, firm and silky tannins with brightness and tension. Some smoke and tar on the finish. Still a little reserved. Drink it after 2025." James Suckling
"It shines with its marvellous aroma of wild strawberries, woody and delicate. In the mouth, it shows its taut, vertical structure and intense, lively and concentrated red fruits, with dusty, woody and balsamic nuances. Despite its obvious power and weight, it is light on its feet and deserves to spend some time in the bottle before opening." Decanter

"Powerful, sparkling ruby-garnet colour. Inviting nose with notes of ripe cherries, some strawberry and coffee powder. Full-bodied and gripping on the palate, shows plenty of grippy tannins, unfortunately a little rough on the final." Falstaff
"The warm, baked cherry and plum fruit in this graceful red exhibits a hint of menthol. Smooth, creamy tannins are seamlessly integrated, while fragrant details of tar, iron, singed orange peel and rooibos tea linger on the firm, lingering finish." Wine Spectator
"Evolved style with milk-chocolate, meaty and balsamic tones combined with red cherries and red berries. The palate is soft with elegant tannins, crisp acidity and a restrained smokiness in the aftertaste. Very savory yet lacks a bit of energy." James Suckling

"Cedar and dried flowers with some plum and orange-peel aromas that follow through to a medium body, fine tannins and a crunchy finish. Just a hint of wood at the end." James Suckling
"Elegant yet exuberant, with flavours of cherry, rose, strawberry and juniper that glide gracefully across the silky palate. Underlined by mineral tar and leather notes, this red wine is long and refreshing, with firm but plushly textured tannins on the finish." Wine Spectator

“Pietra Marina” Bianco Superiore Etna DOC 2019
The area around the small town of Milo is the only vineyard site on Etna where an Etna Bianco is allowed to be bottled as Superiore - and for good reason: only Carricante may be planted on the steep vineyard, which consists of dozens of small terraces. The vines are trained like a small tree on poles made of chestnut wood. The eastern exposure and the proximity of the sea allow the grapes to ripen late, resulting in consistently high acidity levels and a white wine with an aromatic finesse and freshness that is unrivalled even on Etna.
Pietra Marina is a single-varietal Carricante from vines over 80 years old at an altitude of around 950 metres on the eastern side of the volcano. The grapes are not harvested until October each year. Orange blossom, lychee, elderberry and apple on the nose. Harmonious and balanced on the palate, with perfectly integrated acidity and a beautiful finish. Distinct character, full of elegance, profound, sensual and endowed with a stunningly clean spectrum of flavours. One of the rarest and certainly most interesting white wines in Italy! SUPERIORE.DE
"Bright straw yellow with light green notes. Opens with notes of flint and matchstick, lots of grapefruit. Beautiful interplay of acidity and salt on the palate, straightforward, fresh citrus fruit." Falstaff
"A statuesque white with razor-sharp acidity, interwoven with finely woven flavours of apricot, persimmon and Marcona almond, showing accents of lemon oil, honeysuckle and pine. The silky texture has a beautiful, feather-light quality, while a racy hint of salinity defines the very long finish." Wine Spectator
"This intense Etna is full of tension, showing candied cedar, kerosene, apricots and orange blossoms. Light- to medium-bodied, it has a bone-dry style with crisp acidity, minerals and a tight, slightly austere finish." James Suckling
"The Etna Bianco Superiore Pietra Marina 2019 is captivating. It is perfumed and floral, with enriching notes of almond paste and candy spice that perfectly accentuate a smoky core of white peaches. The palate has more verve but is somewhat restrained, with wiry textures and an intense mineral core that adds depth to the citrus-influenced orchard fruits. The nervy acidity makes the mouth water and provides a dazzling freshness, while flowers and sour limes linger on the inside. The 2019 is still a small child today, compact yet complex, balanced and full of character." Vinous

As early as the end of the 18th century, Benanti's ancestors began growing grapes on a vineyard in Viagrande on the southern slope of Mount Etna. Throughout his life, Giuseppe Benanti uncompromisingly focused on quality and played a major role in enabling the appellation at the foot of the volcano to develop its potential so brilliantly. The Etna winemaker died in February 2023, and Giuseppe Benanti handed over the business to his twin sons Antonio and Salvino in 2012. If their father had not decided to renovate the Sicilian family winery in 1988, one could not speak so euphorically today of a renaissance of viticulture around the volcano, which had long sunk into insignificance.
For it is thanks to the winegrower, who persistently adheres to the tradition and history of the growing region, that Etna has long since regained a great reputation and international recognition among critics and wine lovers. Through decades of experimentation, Giuseppe Benanti, as a pioneer of the region, has given the business a solid scientific foundation. This foundation will continue to be the basis for impressive wines with an authentic expression of the volcanic terroir.
The natural yeasts developed and patented by the far-sighted winemaker and the introduction of the Albarello cultivation method have provided useful insights into the potential of autochthonous grape varieties and serve as examples for other wine houses. The merit of the Cavaliere del Lavoro is also the reactivation of old and higher terraced plots. For this purpose Giuseppe carried out experimental plantings and experiments in the cellar. A mistake from the past has now been ironed out by his sons: Antonio and Savino had noted in a survey that the acquisition of land in Castiglione di Sicilia and Noto was not consistent with the history and roots of the farm. Therefore, they have sold vineyards in which varieties such as Cabernet or Chardonnay do not grow according to the Etna tradition.
On the northern, eastern and southern DOC slopes of Mount Etna, the autochthonous varieties Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio and Carricante thrive. Teamwork produces wines of extraordinary depth in the estate, which do not at all fit into the taste picture that many expect from southern plants. The name of the premium white wine Pietramarina has since been changed to Pietra Marina to comply with stricter regulations prohibiting a reference to the district of the same name. SUPERIORE.DE
"Benanti led Etna to the top of wine making. Today's success is undoubtedly linked to hard work and innovation."Robert Parker
