Etna Rosato DOC 2022
Giuseppe Russo produces just 5,000 bottles of this extremely elegant rosato every year. Fine, complex aromas of red fruit and mineral stone on the youthfully fresh nose. The energetic and very precise impressions on the palate correspond beautifully with the flavour. Delicate melting, fine minerality, harmonious and long. SUPERIORE.DE
"Sweet roses, stone dust and orange sherbet make the 2022 Etna Rosato a real delight on the nose. Soothingly round and with a pleasant inner sweetness, it flows across the palate with crisp, mineral-tinged orchard fruits punctuated by a hint of sour citrus. The 2022 finishes intensely mineral and leaves a pleasant mouthfeel as the notes of sour melon gradually fade away." Vinous
"Hints of white peach and green and red fruit aromas accompany some spice and minerals in the mouth, with a touch of creaminess in the background. Fresh, succulent strawberry and raspberry flavours linger on a saline finish." Decanter
"The Etna Rosato 2022 has a floral bouquet with wild flowers, peach blossom and a hint of zagara, the Sicilian lemon blossom. It offers subtle support in the background thanks to a particularly fine and crisp mouthfeel." Wine Advocate
"This wine shows subtle notes of pink cherry, peach skin, dried orange peel and dried flowers. Medium-bodied, delicate and supple, with freshness and crisp acidity. Delicious with a structured, polished finish." James Suckling

”à Rina” Rosso Etna DOC 2021
One of the most exciting Etna Rosso with a balsamic, spicy bouquet and a balanced, yet very characterful, juicy, long flavour. Fine fruit, good acidity, firm tannin, beautiful length. Perfectly reflects the terroir. SUPERIORE.DE
"Multi-faceted bouquet with aromas of stone fruit, flowers and subtle tobacco notes; precise on the palate, the tannins are fine-grained and perfectly integrated, develops full of verve towards a long final." Vinum
"It has a tantalising aroma of red and black cherries, almonds, spices and balsamic. In the mouth it is bright and intense, with a good body and balanced savoury red fruits. The finish is fleshy and juicy, stony and slightly bitter (in a positive way)." Decanter
"The 2021 Etna Rosso ‘A Rina opens slowly in the glass with a savory herbal tinge that gives way to rose petals, ash and wild strawberries. This is juicy and round, with abundant energy and ripe red and blue fruits swirling throughout. Brilliant acidity adds further lift as zesty wild berries linger over a subtle bed of fine tannins, framing the experience without getting in the way. It’s a total pleasure to taste and would even stand up to a slight chill on a warm day." Vinous
"This is the entry-level red wine from Girolamo Russo. The Etna Rosso 'a Rina 2021 is made from Nerello Mascalese and about 10% Nerello Cappuccio from different vineyards and offers excellent value with wild berries, blue flowers and crushed stone with an elegant mouthfeel. The emphasis is on freshness and balance." Wine Advocate
"Plenty of citrus, orange peel, honey and beeswax with some pumice and volcanic soil. Medium-bodied, with firm and integrated tannins that are energetic and integrated. Very nice now, but even better in three or four years." James Suckling

“Nerina” Bianco Etna DOC 2022
Complex aroma profile of dried apple, pear, camomile, exotic fruits and ash. Full of grace on the palate, dry, fruity and intense, a delicate acidity and fine minerality lend freshness. A very elegant and attractive white wine from Etna with good potential and a never-ending experience factor: every sip opens up new facets of this completely enchanting wine. SUPERIORE.DE
"Toffee apple, floral notes, almond bitterness on the finish. Lovely savoury tang here. Rounded without being heavyweight." Jancis Robinson
"Dusty and savoury with an airy scent of lemon leaves, it is intense and bright in the mouth. Crisp green apple, some yellow plum, peach, peppery spice and a lovely juiciness lead to a savoury, pithy finish." Decanter
"The 2022 Etna Bianco Nerina is a real pleasure. It exudes a tropically inspired yet refined bouquet of fresh mangoes, bananas, mint leaves and sweet smoke. It has a soft and round texture with ripe yellow stone fruit. A dash of candied lemon gives it a nice spiciness. The finish is quite mineral, almost crisp, with citrus and kiwi notes. The 2022 is almost too simple to like, but the balance is just right." Vinous
"Nerina is one of my favourite white wines from Etna, especially when drunk young and fresh. The Bianca Nerina 2022 is particularly crisp and bright with a polished, glossy feel. Flavours of citrus, white peach and honey come to the fore. To be honest, I've never been able to keep a bottle long enough to trace its evolution." Wine Advocate
"This wine is perfumed with notes of citrus blossom and citrus leaf as well as white peach and chalky soil. Beautiful texture with medium body and lively, penetrating acidity. Smooth and delicious with a refreshing, minty finish." James Suckling

“San Lorenzo” Bianco Etna DOC 2022
Giuseppe Russo cultivates part of the 12-hectare San Lorenzo vineyard at an altitude of around 750 metres on the slopes of Mount Etna near Randazzo. The lava flows of recent decades have created a porous soil here, rich in volcanic rock and therefore providing excellent drainage.
Just 2,000 bottles are filled each year. The vines, which are over 80 years old, produce an extremely low yield, making the result all the more complex and multi-layered. Fine salinity, light-coloured stone fruit and a well-measured extract sweetness flow from the glass. A good structure on the palate, the acidity and noticeable minerality support the subtle flavours of white peach and grapefruit. The finish is smoky with a nice salty note. It is at its best at 12° and will be even better in a few years! SUPERIORE.DE
"Dusty white peach and orange peel scents are mirrored in the mouth, with some grapefruit, earth and wood tones. There's good intensity, and some ripe pineapple and floral notes emerge on the mid-palate before a fresh, lip-smacking salty finish. Delicious." Decanter
"An attractive wine with aromas of ripe citrus fruit, white flowers, stones and ash. Medium-bodied, multi-layered and complex, but at the same time lively and fresh. Juicy and exciting with a savoury, slightly phenolic and mineral finish." James Suckling
"The 2022 Etna Bianco San Lorenzo is shy in the glass and slowly awakens with a flavoursome blend of young peaches accompanied by grapefruit, rosemary and wet stone. The wine is very structured, silky and supple, with a depth of green apple and melon that soothes the senses. A saline note emerges on the finish, while the 2022 cleanses beautifully, leaving a mentholated freshness as the mango notes fade. The San Lorenzo is an absolute charmer and aims to please." Vinous
"With only a few vintages under his belt, Giuseppe Russo has created a beautiful top-class white wine from Etna. I tasted this sample about a month after bottling, and at this young stage the bouquet is very centred on citrus and salty minerals. But if you look beyond these two aromatic pillars, the wine reveals subtle layers of green apple, quince, pear and saffron. It shows a shy but compelling complexity." Wine Advocate

"Fragrant bouquet with yellow fruit, apricot stones and Williams pear. Very finely contoured structure on the palate with silky and juicy flavours and a wonderfully finesse-rich length. A great Etna Bianco that could do with a little more ageing in the bottle!" Weinwisser
"The complex mineral nose shows candied cedar, flint, smoky depth and a slightly toasty character. Supersoft on the attack with medium body and good weight, lemon and mirabelle-plum flavors merging with crisp, long acidity and a silky finish." James Suckling

“San Lorenzo” Rosso Etna DOC 2021
Giuseppe Russo cultivates part of the 12-hectare San Lorenzo vineyard at an altitude of around 750 metres on the slopes of Mount Etna near Randazzo. The lava flows of recent decades have created a porous soil here, rich in volcanic rock and therefore providing excellent drainage.
San Lorenzo, named after the Roman deacon and martyr, boasts irresistible aromas of red cherry, marzipan, quinine, blood orange and mineral stones. Excellently nuanced on the palate with polished tannins, remarkable length and great elegance. San Lorenzo from Etna - a commitment and one of many examples of the fact that the red wines from Etna can certainly hold their own with the finely elegant representatives of Nebbiolo. SUPERIORE.DE
"Balsamic red fruits mingle with sweet black berries and black cherries, with some strawberry, cherry and pomegranate on the mid palate. Fine, grainy tannins support the fruit, while some dried fruit and more balsamic take centre stage on the long, fresh finish." Decanter
"Subtle notes of ripe red berries, such as cherries and strawberries, with hints of lilac, red spices and crushed stones. Also some blood orange. Medium-bodied, polished and even on the palate with supple tannins that have a dusty texture. Juicy acidity and a crisp, mineral finish." James Suckling
"The 2021 Etna Rosso San Lorenzo entices with a bouquet of candied black cherry and minty herbs accentuated by sweet smoke and cloves. This displays silky textures and ripe red berry fruits with a crunchy mineral core. A zesty stream of acidity creates abundant energy. Classically dry and structured yet not severe, the 2021 finishes long with a pleasantly bitter note, leaving behind a tart cranberry concentration that puckers the cheeks. What a darling." Vinous
"The Etna Rosso San Lorenzo 2021 is a very exciting wine with lots of energy and vigour. It opens with a lean, concentrated body and a bright ruby red colour. The wine displays a long array of wild fruit and small berry flavours, underpinned by crushed white pepper and crushed stone. San Lorenzo is one of the most impressive interpretations of Etna. I highly recommend tasting and cellaring this wine." Wine Advocate

Bright ruby red colour. Refined raspberry and red cherry on the nose, with notes of quinine and flowers that develop with further aeration. Fresh flavours of red berries and smoked beef, with hints of violets and orange zest. Almost exotic on the palate with plenty of luscious extract sweetness and fine tannins and a fresh, mineral, dry finish. An exceptional red wine with a terrificarc of tension! SUPERIORE.DE
"The scent of black cherries and medicinal herbs introduces an intense and concentrated flavour of sweet black forest fruits, balanced by balsamic freshness and integrated tannins. Vertical, elegant and fresh." Decanter
"The 2021 Etna Rosso Feudo di Mezzo takes its time in the glass to reveal spicy tones with a dusty resonance of roses, violets, worn leather and sage. This is silky-smooth with a core of tart wild berry fruits to contrast. Salty minerals saturate as a coating of fine tannins forms toward the close. It finishes staining and long while a twang of sour citrus fades. I love the mix of energy and concentration here." Vinous
"I tasted this wine before it was officially released, and while it definitely needs more time in the bottle, I think we're looking at something very special. With high altitude fruit from old, twisted 100 year old vines, this expression is beautifully ethereal and almost weightless in character. The 2021 Etna Rosso Feudo di Mezzo offers blue flowers, ashy smoke, liquorice and grilled herbs. The tannins are silky and flattering." Wine Advocate

“Feudo” Rosso Etna DOC 2021
Feudo - a radiant ruby-garnet colour - displays lively aromas of raspberry, mint, minerals and flowers, which continue on the palate full of energy. This richness, harmony and freshness also accompany the almost endless and highly elegant finish. SUPERIORE.DE
"In the mouth, it shows a good balance between sticky red fruits, acidity, balsamic freshness and grainy tannins. It is intense and concentrated, with a beautiful texture and a fresh finish. Very Burgundian, with juicy, ripe, tangy red fruits." Decanter
"Very open with fresh flowers and cut oranges with undertones of cherry and ash. Medium-bodied with open-grained tannins that spread out in the mouth. Juicy and flavourful. Very smoky on the finish." James Suckling
"The Etna Rosso Feudo 2021 is a little more approachable overall, but I love the way the bouquet and mouthfeel unfold in this vintage. The wine offers precision and clean straightforwardness. The fruit comes from 70 year old vines and the flavours are nuanced and delicate with wild fruits, roses and flint. The finish is very soft and silky with melting tannins." Wine Advocate
"The 2021 Etna Rosso Feudo is dark and brooding in the glass, slowly unfurling with an enticing mix of dried black cherries, incense, clove and crushed ashen stones. This sweeps across the palate with velvety textures, quickly firming up as masses of black raspberry and salty minerals saturate. Edgy tannins linger along with an enlivening bump of vibrant acidity, keeping the mouth watering despite the 2021's youthfully structured state. The balance of power and elegance here is utterly spellbinding." Vinous

“Calderara Sottana” Rosso Etna DOC 2021
Around 2,000 bottles of this single-vineyard wine are sold each year. Extremely complex bouquet of blackberry, blackcurrant and sour cherry, with perfectly integrated notes of Mediterranean herbs. Broad and elegant on the palate, supported by a delicate acid wire that makes it fresh and lively. A great wine with excellent structure and remarkable persistence and depth of flavour. SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2021 Etna Rosso Calderara Sottana stuns with a perfumed bouquet that blends lavender and cloves with crushed raspberries and dried roses. It's lifted and finessed, amazingly pure in style, with floral-laced wild berry fruits elevated by zesty acidity. Inner Violet tones resonate throughout as the 2021 finishes with silky tannins, a confectionery licorice tinge and youthful concentration, leaving behind a resonance of liquid stone on the close. While ripe in style, this maintains an abundance of energy and complexity." Vinous
"Ripe and sweet red and black berries are underpinned by chocolaty notes and fine, chalky tannins. Very balsamic, savoury and vertical, it shows an impressive concentration of pure, juicy fruit. Patience will be rewarded." Decanter
"Sweet berry and floral aromas with orange peel and flowers. Very intense and flavourful, yet discreet and concentrated. Medium-bodied with ultra-fine tannins that extend over the entire length of the wine. Powerful and polished. It should only be drunk after 2025, but is already very attractive now." James Suckling
"The Etna Rosso Calderara Sottana 2021 turns out to be one of the best wines produced on Mount Etna in recent years. The bouquet is nuanced and rich with many moving parts ranging from red fruits, cassis, blue flowers and campfire ash. These tones are seamlessly intertwined, yet remain vibrant and bright. On the finish, the wine shows a fine structure and plenty of minerality." Wine Advocate

“San Lorenzo Piano delle Colombe” Rosso Etna DOC 2020
Giuseppe Russo cultivates part of the 12-hectare San Lorenzo vineyard at an altitude of around 750 metres on the slopes of Mount Etna near Randazzo. The lava flows of recent decades have created a porous soil here, rich in volcanic rock and therefore providing excellent drainage. SUPERIORE.DE
"Piano delle Colombe is a 100% Nerello Mascalese from vines over 80 years old that grow on a small plot in San Lorenzo. Fermented in small open vats and matured for 18 months in a Liters oak barrel and a used barrique, it is balsamic and earthy with some ripe red and black berry aromas. Juicy, intense and savoury, its subtle, grippy tannins envelop tangy blackberries, pomegranate and a fresh herbal finish." Decanter
"The 2020 Etna Rosso San Lorenzo Piano delle Colombe is a showstopper, spicy and exotic with a kaleidoscopic bouquet of cloves, allspice, dried blood orange, cinnamon and crushed wild blueberries. It's succulently ripe in style with juicy acidity to balance. A wave of violet-tinged wild berry fruits washes across the palate with ease, leaving a tactile mineral tinge in their wake. Hints of sour cherry combine with candied citrus and spice as the 2020 finishes long and staining yet remarkably fresh. A subtle coating of fine tannins provides support but doesn’t impose. This is a showboat vintage for the Piano delle Colombe, a parcel of San Lorenzo with soils that originate from a volcanic explosion rather than lava flow. It's an exquisite and harmonious wine that is sure to win a lot of hearts." Vinous
"This wine shows lots of crisp and fresh red fruit mixed with dried Mediterranean herbs, orange peel and hibiscus. Also some smoky, dusty earth tones. Medium body. Very consistent and persistent on the palate with crisp acidity and a chalky, mineral backbone. Consistent and long finish." James Suckling
"The Girolamo Russo 2020 Etna Rosso San Lorenzo Piano delle Colombe is more approachable compared to the 2019 vintage. It is a beautiful wine with fine fibre and delicate fruity notes of wild berries, gravel and white pepper. The 2020 vintage shows the supreme elegance of Etna." Wine Advocate

Passopisciaro is the name of the small village on the northern slopes of Mount Etna. From here the resurrection of Etna Rosso developed. Situated between Randazzo and Solichiata, it is home to some of the very best sites at 600 to 900 metres above sea level, created on pure lava. Only 30 kilometres as the crow flies from Taormina or Catania. Ancient stock cultures, called Albarello, which can be quite a hundred years old, are rooted here directly in the volcanic rock. Hence the name of the place, in regional dialect means "Sciara" viz. "lava". So you could do Passopisciaro with "Goes on the lava" Translate. If you continue to think freely, you'll also be able to "lava-rooting" and can also be applied to humans.
That's the kind of guy Giuseppe Russo is. He comes from Passopisciaro and is deeply rooted here. And he doesn't want to be anywhere else. That's why he has been building a new winery called Girolamo Russo with old vines since 2005 with joy, a lot of effort and an unbelievable amount of work. Slowly and steadily, and again and again long negotiated, if one of the "old" of the place and no descendants were there or had long since moved to the city. Then Giuseppe tried to buy or lease these old vineyards. Together with the property of his father, after whom the vineyard is named, it now covers 15 hectares, surrounded by hazelnut bushes and olive trees.
With the minimal yields that such ancient Albarello wine trees still deliver, you almost have to fight for the bottles, so rare - and so much in demand - they are now. No wonder, because Giuseppe Russo works out the fine differences of the floors like hardly anyone else. Different old lava flows produce different mineral notes, which then produce these fine differences in the equally different microclimate. Of course, such a meticulous winemaking can only be carried out with appropriate organic soil management. Hardly anyone uses less spray than Giuseppe. And manual work is necessary anyway, as these old poles could not be machined even if they did not stand on these steep terraces.
"Wine from Etna couldn't be more typical." wrote a wine journalist the other day. And hit the nail on the head. Who wants to know how such a wine from the volcano, how such a Nerello Mascalese actually tastes, whether it can really be as elegant as Barolo or Burgundy, whether this wine is really as elegant as Barolo or Burgundy, whether it is as good as a wine from the volcano, or whether it is as elegant as a Nerello Mascalese. "hype" is really justified, he once afforded a wine from Girolamo Russo. But be careful. Repeat orders are almost guaranteed. SUPERIORE.DE
