Etna Bianco DOC 2023 (BIO)
Etna Bianco is smoky in the glass and excites the senses with a burst of crushed rock and raw almonds before fading into a citrus-influenced peach. It is pleasantly soft and enveloping, with weighty textures supported by lively acidity. Mineral fruits and sweet spices meet on the palate. Finishes remarkably fresh yet grippy and long, leaving the mouth wanting more. The complexity of this wine is unrivalled for an entry-level Etna Bianco. SUPERIORE.DE
"Honey blossom, candied ginger, hints of fennel and crushed green apples form a savoury and inviting bouquet when the 2023 Etna Bianco opens in the glass. Ripe fruit meets a core of salty minerals and savoury spices, while a stimulating wave of acidity completely redefines the palate. The 2023 finishes perfumed and long, leaving a pleasantly tart hint of citrus that tickles the cheeks." Vinous
"This has a restrained white-pepper and mineral character, lemon bush and pulp. On the palate, the acidity is firmly integrated with citrus, flint, concentrated fruit and a medium to full body. The finish is supersavory and tense. Drinkable now but will improve with age." James Suckling

Olio Extra Vergine di Oliva 2023 (BIO)
Tenuta delle Terre Nere | Sicily
"There are around 1,500 olive trees on our estate. Many of them are centuries old. And we feel an obligation towards them, a historical memory that flows through our veins today. I would never dare to say that our oil is the best oil in the world. There is no such thing as the best oil in the world. I would say that there are certainly others who look after their trees and their olives like we do, but none who do it more than we do.
Our trees have always been grown organically. They are carefully pruned every two years. The olives are all picked by hand and the day's harvest is pressed every evening. The oil is decanted and naturally clarified until February/March and bottled without filtration. Our volcanic soils give it sweetness, finesse and flavour. The cold nights limit the presence of the oil fly. The result is an excellent extra virgin olive oil." Marco de Grazia, Eigentümer

“Le Vigne Niche Contrada Montalto” Bianco Etna DOC 2022
This single-vineyard Carricante comes from the small Montalto vineyard on the southern slope of Etna at an altitude of around 950 metres. It is the most balanced and at the same time most exciting of all Etna Bianco from Terre Nere in terms of its overall impression and flavour; the whole Etna package is present here in exactly the right dose: Minerality, salinity, fruitiness and a perfect hint of orange peel and flint on the nose. On the palate, it is vibrant and fine, with an almost Burgundian dimension, full of finesse and length. SUPERIORE.DE
"Lovely dried apple and lemon with some mineral and stone character both on the nose and palate. It also shows some pumice. Medium body. Crisp and multi-layered." James Suckling
"It is soft, fleshy and peachy in flavour, yet with excellent acidity. Notes of stone and pineapple add vibrancy to this delicious, flavoursome white wine with no alcohol content." Decanter
"Spicy and full of tension, the 2022 Etna Bianco Le Vigne Niche Montalto bursts from the glass with a blend of lemon zest, minty herbs, young peaches and crushed rocks. This opens with a pretty inner sweetness and crisp minerality, rushing the palate with ripe orchard fruits elevated by candied citrus. The Montalto finishes with fantastic length and potency, lightly structured and tactile. This gorgeous Etna Bianco is drinking beautifully today yet with the balance to promote medium-term cellaring." Vinous

“Le Vigne Niche Calderara Sottana” Bianco Etna DOC 2022 (BIO)
Fantastic Etna crescendo from vines up to 60 years old from a small single vineyard with wonderfully balanced iodine and citrus flavours. Softly flowing on the palate, profound in flavour, the fine acidity, inner sweetness and delicate woody notes are well integrated into the overall concept designed for a long ageing period. SUPERIORE.DE
"Lots of honeysuckle and cut lemon with some crushed stone. Medium-bodied with a creamy texture and focused phenolics that add nice texture and length. Some flint on the finish." James Suckling
"This cru bottling from vines in Randazzo is youthfully creamy and offers little flavour other than that of the wood in which it has rested, along with stony patches of mango and peach. This Carricante is full, concentrated and highly acidic. It has enough earthy yellow fruit - such as pineapple, nectarine and yellow plum - to underpin its stony and acidic backbone; a vertical yet full style that will gain power and weight with age. Impressive." Decanter
"With a bouquet like chiseling through sheer limestone with all of the smoky and flinty nuances that come with it, the 2022 Etna Bianco Le Vigne Niche Calderara Sottana is impossible to ignore. It’s silky upon entry yet quickly builds with mineral tension. A savory, sweet interplay of citrus and spice offsets ripe nectarines and apricots. The 2022 leaves the palate reeling with youthful tension and watering for more as it finishes with outstanding freshness. This may not be the longest-lived Calderara Sottana Bianco, yet there’s no rush. It’s a total charmer." Vinous

Limitation of 3 articles per customer“Calderara Sottana Bellacolonna 20 anni” Rosso Etna DOC 2022
Marc de Grazia on his anniversary wine: "To honour the collective effort of the entire Tenuta delle Terre Nere team, I thought it appropriate to celebrate the 20th anniversary of our first release with a unique cuvée. This cuvée should represent our appellation and our winery and say something about our beginnings. Therefore, first and foremost, it should be an Etna Rosso, as this is our most important appellation. Secondly, the wine should be made from Calderara Sottana grapes, as our winery and the surrounding vineyards are located in Contrada Calderara Sottana, where we also have our largest expansions. However, it should not be confused with our Calderara Sottana bottling, which is made from the best fruit of exclusively old vines from all our Calderara estates.
I therefore decided to produce a cuvée from a single, particularly gifted vineyard in Calderara, called Bellacolonna. I chose it not only because of its excellent quality, but also because we planted our first vineyards here in 2006 and 2007, after sadly uprooting plots of semi-abandoned and decaying old vines. We made our beautiful cuvée from the fruit of these vines. It has the privilege of coming from an exceptionally good vineyard and at the same time the good fortune of being born in an outstanding vintage.
It has been aged in new oak (which I think is perfectly appropriate for a wine made from young vines) and has been given the same ageing time as our crus. I would say it has real charm; more stylish than our Etna Rosso with a depth and character reminiscent of our Calderara Sottana (apart perhaps from the extra layers that old vines provide). It was born elegant and will become even more subtle with age; it has the weightless composure of youth and the promise of even greater finesse in the future. It is indeed a wine that I am very proud of and that longs to epitomise all that is Tenuta delle Terre Nere."
"Vibrant and intense, a burst of autumnal spice, dusty rose and blood orange gives way to dried strawberries as the 2022 Etna Rosso Calderara Sottana Bellacolonna blossoms in the glass. The wine is simply stunning. On the palate, it shows crunchy wild berries and mineral notes carried by a zesty acidity. It leaves a hint of primary concentration and silky tannins that linger into the violet-coloured final, while a hint of candy spice slowly fades. The Bellacolonna comes from a selection of young vines planted in 2006 and 2007 in the Cru Calderara Sottana." Vinous
"This is a special bottling for the 20th anniversary of the estate. It has depth and intensity with a medium to full body, a creamy stone and basalt texture, red fruits and a mushroom and bark undertone. The linear, vivid finish goes on and on. Needs time to open. Be patient." James Suckling

Limitation of 3 articles per customer“Le Vigne Niche Salice” Bianco Etna Superiore DOC 2023 (BIO)
The area around the small town of Milo is the only vineyard site on Etna where an Etna Bianco is allowed to be bottled as Superiore - and for good reason: only Carricante may be planted on the steep vineyard, which consists of dozens of small terraces. The vines are trained like a small tree on poles made of chestnut wood. The eastern exposure and the proximity of the sea allow the grapes to ripen late, resulting in very consistent acidity levels and a white wine with an aromatic finesse and freshness that is unrivalled even on Etna.
This historic site, called Milo, with its old vines, is virtually predestined for the Etna Bianco Superiore, which Terre Nere is now bringing to market for the first time as a single-vineyard Bianco "Salice". More floral and citrus-scented on the nose than the normal Carricante, the Superiore also has a little more body, acidity, depth and finesse. The elegant acidity makes it vibrantly fresh and long and ensures an exciting drinking flow and good ageing potential. SUPERIORE.DE
"This super white is really focused, featuring a linear line of salty fruit with apple and lime undertones. Full but tight, it has great length and presence." James Suckling

Limitation of 3 articles per customer“Moganazzi” Rosso Etna DOC 2021
Here is a fairly new single-vineyard wine, similar in style to Santo Spirito, but with an "autumnal" component. Light ruby red in colour, with a nose of gravel, vanilla and a subtle hint of mint, plus some cranberry, cherry, nutmeg and mocha. Fresh and exciting on the palate with a sweet and sour component and a delicately bitter vein. Compact tannin that certainly deserves a few more years in the bottle. The final is herbaceous, spicy and long. SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2021 Etna Rosso Moganazzi is very delicate and restrained. It unfolds slowly with a nuanced blend of incense, dried roses and exotic citrus fruits. It is supple, round and medium-bodied, with a zesty acidity and a crystalline core of minerals that slowly support the tart wild berry fruit. The finish is a little short but effective, leaving a bitter raspberry note and grippy tannins that tug at the cheeks." Vinous
"Sparkling, brightening ruby red colour. Fragrant, playful nose, lots of raspberries and blackberries, followed by violets and a hint of lemongrass. Extremely juicy and fruity on the palate, ripe, fine-grained tannins, lively acidity, spicy, mouth-watering final." Falstaff
"A spicy skein of graphite, ground white pepper and clove winds through flavors of ripe black cherry and black raspberry fruit in this red, with accents of sassafras, red licorice and tar. A crisp frame of well-integrated tannins and bright acidity carries the expressive profile through the lasting finish." Wine Spectator
"Fleshy red and black cherry aromas with some cocoa and balsam make for an enticing wine. In the mouth it's rich and intense, with good acidity injecting freshness into the black cherry, blackberry, violet and cocoa palate. The tannins are fine and grippy, clearly evident on the cheeks, supporting the concentrated, precise core. Full and delicious." Decanter
"It has a fresh and fragrant nose with beautiful cherries and raspberries as well as rose petals, liquorice and crushed stones. On the palate, it is firm and straightforward, with a medium body and lively acidity. It's hard to draw a line between the tannins and the earthy, mineral aspect, as both create a chalky mouthfeel and lead to a long, textured finish. I like the finesse of this wine, although it is still quite dense and firm." James Suckling

“Santo Spirito” Rosso Etna DOC 2020
Santo Spirito is a wonderfully complex wine that always remains in balance. It combines firmness, strength, structure and density with the flavours of dark cherries, pomegranate, blood oranges and spicy herbal notes and concludes with a furiously long final. SUPERIORE.DE
"Light, bright ruby red colour. The nose has sweet, fresh and lively notes of fresh cherries, plums and wild strawberries, raspberries and redcurrants, followed by a hint of sweet spices and powder. The sip is dry, fresh and mineral. It leaves a clear and pleasant salty note on the palate." Falstaff
"Sweet autumnal spice, cedar shavings, cherry sauce and mint nuances make the 2020 Etna Rosso Santo Spirito impossible to ignore. This is a showboat, silky and refined, with pure red berry fruits and saline mineral tones that add a lovely traction toward the close. Zesty acidity provides a nice inner freshness as the 2020 tapers off spicy and extends with a tinge of fine tannins that promise many years of positive development." Vinous
"On the nose, it smells of rosehips, redcurrants, pomegranates, violets, lemon peel, cloves and cinnamon sticks. Seductive, spicy character. Almost peppery, with a medium body and firm, grainy tannins. Lots of tension." James Suckling
"Of the wines in this important portfolio from Etna, this is often the softest and most sensual. The Tenuta delle Terre Nere 2020 Etna Rosso Santo Spirito delivers a very fine and nuanced fruit profile with hints of wild berries and roses. The mouthfeel is lean and delicate, and the tannins are supple." Wine Advocate

Feudo di Mezzo Il Quadro Delle Rose smells of roses and small red berries. It is a heavy, tannic wine that requires a little patience, but finds its balance with time. A wine of exceptional finesse and great intellect. SUPERIORE.DE
"The rose-coloured and perfumed 2022 Etna Rosso Feudo di Mezzo opens with a lovely bouquet that blends dried flowers with crushed strawberries and a hint of lavender. It displays textures of pure silk with an elevated and refined feel. Tart wild berries give it a beautiful inner tension. A web of fine-grained tannins frames the experience as the 2022 tapers off with a pickling length and a tart cranberry concentration." Vinous

“Calderara Sottana” Rosso Etna DOC 2020
Every year, one of the Tenuta's great single-vineyard wines, which represents the special terroir of the Etna hills in a highly complex way. Dark red fruit, orange peel and flowers on the nose. Then juicy fruit, wonderful depth and a finely chiselled tannin structure. A subtle spiciness on the finish and the outstanding structure, length and elegance are always present! SUPERIORE.DE
"Ruby red colour. Elegant, perfumed and lively nose of fresh red flowers and ripe red fruits. Closes with spicy notes of pepper and graphite minerals. Structured, fresh and lean on the palate. Mineral note on the finish, persistent." Falstaff
"The Calderara Sottana 2020 is youthfully shy in the glass, with hints of sweet violets, blackberries and crushed stone. Inside, it is a model of purity, silky and enveloping, with elegant red and black fruits swirling over a core of savoury minerals and exotic spices. The 2020 finishes long and colourful, with fine-grained tannins that pinch the palate. Notes of red plums and cinnamon ring through. It is a very Burgundian vintage of Calderara Sottana." Vinous
"The Tenuta delle Terre Nere 2020 Etna Rosso Calderara Sottana has a spicy, almost autumnal personality with tobacco, damp moss, spices and dark fruit. It stands out from the other wines in the portfolio thanks to these darker fruit qualities. Marc De Grazia uses the unusual word "feline" to describe the long and supple mouthfeel. I notice the dry, silky nature of the elegant tannins." Wine Advocate
"Aromas of rust, sea urchin, wild thyme, salted plums, Seville oranges, walnuts and asphalt. Very fine, grainy tannins. Intense rusty and mineral notes, medium-bodied and elegant on the palate. Long and flavoursome." James Suckling

“San Lorenzo” Rosso Etna DOC 2022
The Cru San Lorenzo, which is strictly limited in each vintage, comes from 4 hectares of vineyards in the district of the same name in the town of Randazzo. The vines are over 70 years old and grow around 750 metres above sea level; the soil consists almost exclusively of fine volcanic sand. The terroir in the small Contrada San Lorenzo was created by lava flows and deposits of volcanic origin that were formed between 60,000 and 15,000 years ago. This exceptional wine is particularly rich, fruity and has very soft tannins that make it velvety and luscious on the palate and ensure a never-ending finish. Magnificent! SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2022 Etna Rosso San Lorenzo is remarkably pretty and redolent of dried flowers, cloves and lavender. It opens with a hint of candied orange that enlivens its core of tart wild berries. The lively acidity keeps the experience fresh throughout. The San Lorenzo colours the palate with high concentration, is lightly tannic and crisp, and leaves delightful floral scents that linger. This is the understated favourite of the Terre Nere portfolio, and I expect cellaring will add even more complexity." Vinous
"On the nose and the palate, wonderful cherry-blossom and rose-petal characters to the dark cherries and sliced blood oranges. Medium- to full-bodied with balance and intensity, this goes on for minutes. The citrus is hypnotizing." James Suckling

“Calderara Sottana” Rosso Etna DOC 2022
Every year, one of the Tenuta's great, magical single-vineyard wines, which represents the special terroir of the Etna hills in a highly complex way. Dark red fruit, orange peel and flowers on the nose. Then juicy fruit, wonderful depth and a finely chiselled tannin structure. A subtle spiciness on the finish and the outstanding structure, length and elegance are always present! SUPERIORE.DE
"The Etna Rosso Calderara Sottana 2022 is intense and spicy in the glass. Crushed ash stones and grilled herbs give way to dried black cherries and spiced orange peel. The wine is luxuriously soft on the attack and is given a lovely lift by a core of tantalising acidity, while salty minerals and grippy tannins consolidate the ripe wild berries. The finish is very long and concentrated, leaving a youthful, structured impression and a pleasantly acidic sensation that lingers. The 2022 combines generosity with power in a wonderfully balanced package that favours cellaring for a decade." Vinous
"The purity and clarity to this really talks to you, with red cherry, orange peel, citrus blossom and basalt. Hints of smoke and tar, too. The transparency is really something here." James Suckling

“Calderara Sottana Bellacolonna 20 anni” Rosso Etna DOC 2022 · MAGNUM

Etna Rosso Prephylloxera Vigna di Don pepis a breathtakingly elegant, small-production Etna Rosso. Iridescent, pure dark red colour and an infinitely broad fruity aroma. Impeccable balance and structure on the palate. The tannins are present and yet wonderfully elegant and balanced. An explosive wine made from 100 per cent Nerello Mascalese - and from ancient vines in Calderara and Santo Spirito. SUPERIORE.DE
"The Etna Rosso Prephylloxera La Vigna di Don pepCalderara Sottana 2022 is seductive and youthfully backward. It exudes a blend of sweet spices, dusty violets and ash that fades into dried black cherries, sage and cloves. This wine is velvety yet refined, with a polished wave of ripe red and blue fruit flowing over a juicy stream of acidity. A hint of sour citrus contrasts towards the end. The finish is remarkably fresh and energetic, still tannic but lively as crisp tannins linger and a hint of lavender slowly fades. This is an elegant and truly harmonious edition of this cuvée. Simply stunning." Vinous
"A fascinating wine showing flower stems, orange peel and bark with some dried mushrooms. The structure and length are exceptional with a medium to full body and tight, focused tannins. Ends with a persistent, polished and refined finish. Caresses in every sense. Better in five years but if you get the chance to drink now, go for it!" James Suckling

You need good shoes if you want to go to your vineyards with Marco de Grazia. Best mountain boots. Because that's where you actually go mountaineering. Yeah, you could call it climbing in some places.
Marco de Grazia is well known in the international fine wine scene. You could say worldwide. He was one of the first in Italy to bring together several up-and-coming wineries and was thus able to achieve remarkable export successes. He was co-inventor and engine of the Barolo Boys.
In his constant search for good and authentic wines, he arrived in Sicily in 2002 and tasted Rosso dell'Etna - red wine from Etna. And was fascinated. From the wine, from the bizarre landscape with the black soils and from the introverted people who harvested there in many working hours the lowest yields of gnarled ancient wine trees. That's why there weren't twenty wineries left. Today there are ten times as many and wine from Etna is a sought-after speciality.
Marco and his brother Iano de Grazia, who joined in, are not innocent of this at all. Their commitment and fairly rapid success sparked the interest of some major wine producers, who eventually all invested around Etna.
The highest sites of the Tenuta delle Terre Nere stretch almost up to one third to the northern flank of the mighty towering and always smoking volcano Etna. From about 600 m up to almost 1,000 m above sea level. The higher, the steeper it gets. And rockier. The highest sites - called Contrade here - are real rock terraces. These "rocks" are black. Weathered lava. Hence Tenuta delle Terre Nere. The manor with the black floors.
You could write a book when Marco pulls his floppy hat into his face and starts telling stories. Because he has a lot to tell. From his locations, which he also likes to call "cru" and with which he draws comparisons with Burgundy. If one compares the wines, one also understands this, because "Rosso dell'Etna" from individual sites (Cru or here Contrade) could be understood as a combination of Barbaresco and Burgundy.
The winery is located on the northern slopes of the volcano, between Solicchiata and Randazzo. In the middle of the combed green of the vine rows on black soil lies the striking red house with the cellar. And here it is again, the comparison with Burgundy - "if one would compare the wine-growing area around Etna with Burgundy, then these sites would be here the Côte d'Or des Etna" says Marco de Grazia.
Already in his first vintages (2002) Marco de Grazia decided to vinify the individual "Crus" separately, because the soils and microclimates are so different. Even within a single small plot, which may have one hectare, the differences can be considerable due to the former eruptions and lava flows, the soils being of different ages - and a height difference of 200 metres.
Due to the altitude, it is relatively cool and always windy, even in midsummer. Offshore wind - after all, Mount Etna is 3,350 m high. And during the day the winds blow from the nearby sea across the land. All sites have been farmed organically since the beginning, some of them have been in organic farming for generations.
Feudo di Mezzo is the largest site in the region, which is why its volcanic soil is interspersed with various ancient lava flows. 600-700 m above sea level with 40-80 year old vines. The heart is called "Il Quadro delle Rose", from here comes a very elegant and complex Etna Rosso DOC, from Nerello Mascalese.
Caldera Sottana is the steepest and hardest rocky vineyard. Grapes - 50 to 100 years old - only 5 tons per hectare. 14 ha red (98% Nerello Mascalese, 2% Nerello Cappuccio) and 3.5 ha white (Carricante). A floor made of volcanic ash, black pumice stone and solid volcanic rock.
One hectare of it, divided into two small plots next to the cellar, is called "La Vigna di Don Peppino". These vineyards have survived the phylloxera and are still root true vines, more than 130 years old. A man cared for her all her life, for more than 70 years; without him they would hardly have survived. Today they are magnificent little trees. Low yield, but elegant and structured. Thanks to Don Peppino.
Santo Spirito is the most scenic location with a great view. At 700-760m above sea level, 40-100 year old vines grow on "younger" volcanic soils rich in nutrients and minerals. Around the vineyards grows a lot of green, meadows and wild herbs, and so are the wines from this location. Quite intense and finely spicy.
San Lorenzo is the "newcomer", but with sticks up to one hundred years old. 4 hectares of magnificent Nerello grapes on volcanic and rocky soils. At about 750 m above sea level you can reach mini yields of about 5 t/ha. These small berry grapes produce complex, finely structured and elegant red wines that are among the best in the region.
Guardiola is the highest "Contrada". One of the first vineyards to be purchased by Marco di Grazia and his brother Iano. 800 to almost 1,000 m above sea level, windy, cool, barren. Volcano, basalt, hard and steep. Extreme handwork, many hours of work for just three and a half to four and a half tons of grapes. This effort is only worthwhile for lovers, because they appreciate this herbal spice, this wonderful, clear dark fruit, structure and complexity, as well as elegance and potential for many years. SUPERIORE.DE
"The wines of Marco di Grazia have helped to put Etna at the top of the geological map. Its consistency in winemaking is one of the most important guarantees for the future of this up-and-coming wine region". Robert Parker
